Day 4: Pacific NW USA, NFD with 16:8
Yesterday’s b2b FD following a liquid only FD was over 500 cal but close. I witnessed the effect high anxiety TV watching (baseball game) had on my “nervous snacking reflex”. At least the crunchiest thing I had on hand was celery! Geez though, was it ever obvious to me how much my emotions play into my eating impulses!
Today we had a brunch of BPC and leftover veggie frittata. OH is perfectly happy eating my LCHF recipes with me and says he doesn’t miss refined cards either. Also he eats lunch out week days so he gets all he wants then!
Like Bethany iterated, I haven’t eaten refined carbs and haven’t shied away from fats since May. I’ll have more data on the effects when I see the results after 6 months when I get my annual blood test in November.
AMC18 – all four of our children and their families live between SF and Carmel, a favorite part of the world and we still haven’t seen it all. In SF it’s fun to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, the Marin Headlands are beautiful, just south of Carmel is Point Lobos State Natural Reserve with a coastal hike with lots of whale and seal sightings: https://www.google.com/search?q=los+lobos+park+ca&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us You won’t do everything but just about anything will be beautiful in central CA!
Maui – from my readings on this site I hear many people do a 4:3 which is basically an ADF (Alternate Day Fast) as researched by Dr Varady and cited by Dr M originally. You can look up her research but I was interested to read on another web site that interviewed her that she said her study participants had it easier if they didn’t break up their meals on fast days “For some reason, having three 150 calorie meals throughout the day doesn’t work as well for people as having one 500 calorie meal in the middle of the day on fast days,” she said.
Pissupousa – (I have a difficult time trying to shorten your name, Ha!) – wasn’t the research Fung cited on exercise interesting? I had the exact same results as one study he mentioned – when I trained daily with a professional group for 6 months and completed a marathon I weighed exactly the same before and after. Of course I wasn’t fasting or restricting calories. Something Fung wrote has struck a cord with me, “Exercise is like brushing your teeth. It is good for you and should be done every day. Just don’t expect to lose weight.” (I would add, you may not lose the weight you want if you expect exercise to be a major component of your plan.)
Day 9/New Zealand/FD
I know September has started but I’d really like to join.
I’m 173cm currently 68kg. I’m not weighing regularly anymore, I prefer to use how my clothes fit as my measurement tool but I know that I’ve been 58.5kg for the last 6years until gradually this year I’ve crept up to this mornings weight which incidentally is 1kg heavier than I was at 9months pregnant with either of my children. Enough is enough and I need to admit it’s time to do something about that fact that none of my jeans fit me! It’s not just a pre menstrual bloated day like I’ve been pretending I have put on 10kg and it’s got to go.
* After my post I kept thinking about my past exercise experiences. OH and I worked with a personal trainer for years, I ran half marathons as a bi-monthly exercise plan, I was svelte and trim and ate an organic “balanced diet” and thought that my weight and body composition would always be stable. But for the literal life of me when my exercise level could not be maintained my body changed. This is a cautionary tale I need to remember, even about the WOL maintenance of 5:2. So I guess what I need to say is for me exercise cannot be a primarily part of my weight loss plan unless that exercise component can be maintained for life. My body was good at running long distances . . . for a while. More reading of Fung, stay tuned. . .
Hi back:
You bring up an important point. Exercise is very effective to help maintain weight. People generally don’t gain many pounds in a short period of time – they eat slightly over their TDEE for longer periods. Exercise does not burn that many calories, but it does burn enough to compensate for overeating a few extra calories a day!
Simcoeluv, you are right on about the gradual weight gain. I weighted 125lb in 1976, here it is 40 years later and I’m at 175 – most of the gain was that first 30 years – a lb or two here and there. Been pretty much stuck at around 173-175 over the past 8 to 10 years, even when I do a lot of walking. We’ve always been into healthy foods – no chips or ice cream etc kept in our house. But obviously too much of any food, even if it’s organic, will put on the weight. Cheese, almonds etc are hard to keep in moderation so keeping them out of the house for this September;)
Greetings from down under!
Just stumble across this. I have been doing 5:2 on off, lost about 10KG since june 2016. However, I am at the point where my weight lost is stagnant.
I will start my sep challenge today 5th Sep to 5th Oct.
Monday and Wed are my FD.
Will update my weight details later.
Happy fasting all! and thank you for organising this!
Day 4 Minnesota, USA NFD
Congratulations on reaching your goal weight, Ciren2! And the extra couple to use as a buffer. I’m very happy for you. Enjoy your accomplishment!
Looking forward to a fast day tomorrow to make up for eating a little over TDEE this weekend. Like Rocy 65, I feel like my body needs a rest from food, and a reset. I may do a 36 hour or so liquids only.
Good luck to everyone!
I agree about eating over the TDEE for long periods rather than 1 big overload being the cause of the problem. Unfortunately for me I’ve been able to eat whatever I wanted and stay the same size for years….until this year that is. Regular running and gym work probably helped but I’ve worn my body out with running and just can’t do it like I used to. I think a combo of less exercise and age has finally caught him me…I’m 10kg heavier than I was in January and totally depressed about it. I know I can’t calorie restrict every day it’s way too stressful for me but I’m staying positive that 5:2 and the September challenge will get me going back in the right direction. I need a permanent lifestyle change and all your stories give me hope, if it’s working for you maybe it’s going to work for me too
Day 5 / Australian in Asia / FD
Hi all. Apologies for my tardiness over the weekend. Saturday was super busy and yesterday afternoon I started to come down with something. Still feel pretty average today, but should make for an easy fast day – no interest in food at all.
Hannah, please don’t beat yourself up. You are not a pig, you just had a binge. It happens – it’s not good, but it happens. If it’s any consolation on Friday I fell off the wagon and ate 2,794 calories (I know, I tracked every single on in MFP). AND I didn’t start eating until 6.30pm, so all of that was from 6.30pm – 10.30pm and included a bottle of red wine, 2 glasses of Baileys and a whole lot of chips and chocolate (this is why I have to 5:2, those fasts where you have an 8 hour eating window every day? – yeah, I can’t do that, I can ingest a LOT of calories in 8 hours – look what I did in only 4!) In the morning I hated myself, gave myself a stern talking to, and put myself back on the bandwagon.
So anyway, fasting today, just a water fast and if I can stomach it I’ll have some steamed veggies tonight.
Happy Monday to everyone – let’s have a successful week.
Day 4(sunday).UK.NFD
Today was a bit of a pig out food wise.
Pork sunday roast. Co op strawberry and vanilla ice cream cone
3 standard size Cadbury twirl bars.
2 peaches
2 beacon egg rolls.
Bike:none
My doctor said my “smokers cough” is because of my obesity. Never had a cough like this before. Only since the last stone has been added. So might try a little experiment just for a few weeks of, doing 4 fast days a week.
Day 5 Italy – NFD
Yesterday’s wedding was lovely and i felt great. Managed to eat a little of everything and a few glasses of wine. Tummy feels fine this morning.
Even though it was because it was because i had been unwell, it was a real eye-Opener for me how much more enjoy able it was eating moderately rather than stuffing my face. I was able to dance and run and play with the little ones, rather than be sat there all heavy and drunk. But, i still managed to eat everything including a piece of wedding cake ( not all of it though). Very pleased with myself and another tool for the future.
Dead man walking – your Day was probably not as bad as you think. If you could have gone without the twirls (or kept it to 1) it might not have been that bad at all. So many of us on here struggle to do a NFD staying within our TDEE (have you calculated these yet?) that is where the secret lies because your Fast days no longer have to compensate for over eating. That is when you start to lose weight. Rather than Fast more try to have more NFD where you are within your TDEE.
Cornwall Uk Day 5
The good thing is my scales tell me I’m still 66.1kg, I’m pleased with that after my sociable week! It does show that I have ben mindful over my choices and this bodes well for futre maintenance when I reach my goal!
Today is going shopping with my daughter for last bits of school uniform with a treat for the children to nice burger bar! I dont like to fast when with the grandchildren not sure how things will pan out!
Good luck all!!
UK day 5 it’s Monday so that means FD for me – I used to be fine on just liquids til around 7 but I’ve been tempted to start nibbling around mid afternoon so I’m aiming to stay strong today.
Agree that exercise will not result in weight loss, for me it’s about stress relief, enjoyment ,body awareness and health benefits but we are all different and need to find what works for each of us
Day 5, Australia. FD
Stopped eating at 6.30 pm last night, today has been liquids only, 3 coffees, plenty of water and I’ll have a second miso soup about 6pm, I put a couple of tsps of miso paste in a mug of hot water. I find liquid only easier than calorie counting. I’ll fast until tomorrow morning, that makes it 36 hrs.
Did a PT session this morning and walked puppy dog 5.5 kms this afternoon. The exercise does wonders for my head and fitness but nothing for weight loss.
I have a dull headache most of the day despite drinking a few litres of water…a bit of detoxing me thinks!
If you’re struggling, keep hanging in and never stop trying.
VP
It’s 7pm on my first FD for this week and I’ve kept to 500cals today with no difficulty.
I feel very empowered at the end of a FD, I’m thinking about 4:3 again seeing as how easy today was. I started with 4:3 for the first two weeks but only managed 5:2 in my third week which was last week. Any thoughts on wether that would speed up the losses? I’ve read conflicting ideas about it, some say 4:3 means you eat a bit more on a NFD and cancel out the potential extra loss, others say it’s closer to alternate day fasting and might speed things along weight loss wise? I’m keen to know anyone’s thoughts or if anyone more experienced with fasting has tried both methods.
Extra post!
HolltLJ, so pleased you were able to enjoy the wedding without over indulging! Well done!
I have one next Saturday and know the buffet will be really high carb! I’ve chosen to drive so will stick to sparking water! This will be my biggest test for a long time!
Ive recalculated my TDEE and its now only 1620 so I really have to make good choices.
NFdays are not easy but planning is the key! I have found, to my cost, that if I don’t plan then I don’t make good choices!
I have plenty of sparkling mineral water ready cold, slice of lemon, it takes the edge off a hungry tum, which then helps my brain to make mindful choies!! I have fresh raw veg red ppper, cucumber, beetroot and carrot ready cut in a box prominently placed at eye level in the fridge,
These really do fill the gap if I need food!!
Good luck every one, onwards and DOWN!!!!
Day 5: Gloucestershire (Cotswolds) UK: Fast-Day.
VoiletP; I’m with you today, hoping for my usual 36-hour liquid (water-only in my case) fast til breakfast tomorrow. It is harder for me this week as I’m not at work and the kitchen is RIGHT HERE!
NorthernDawn: Thanks for your good wishes….non-fast days continue to be my problem, but I’ve managed to swap quite a lot of chocolate and sweet stuff for rather a lot of nuts which is probably healthier.
My main aim is not to follow all the family on my mother’s side into diabetes, diagnosed at around my age (62). Most, but not all, were overweight at the time.
London day 5 FD
Good morning from somewhat drizzly London.
Weekend was a failure on the Sept-Challenge scale! Sure enough the scales reflected that with a 1 kg gain this morning!
I’m on a 36h water fast now.
Ciren2 – do you count your 36 h from the time you had your last meal? E.g. mine was 7pm last night, so if I’m right, 36 h will be until 7am tomorrow morning?
London Day 5 NFD.
Sorry I didn’t post over the weekend but we had severe internet problems and it was too annoying to try and logon! I had a good NF weekend and kept within my TDEE. The only treat I had was some ice cream and a couple of squares of dark chocolate. A huge improvement for me as I usually go a bit mad at the weekends so my new challenge to myself is to be careful especially with alcohol as I don’t drink during the week.
Hope everyone else had a good weekend and here is to another successful week 🙂
Day 5 / Australia / NFD
Yesterday’s fast began with challenging hunger and emotion and through the day I was able to feel those two as separate feelings within. Prior to commencing 5:2 I doubt I would have been able to separate them. Fasting day helped me see and feel the distinctions clearer.
I awoke this morning, the day after my fast day, feeling clear headed, balanced and satiated and waited until I felt real hunger before eating, which was lunch at 1 pm.
I had two conscious snacks between lunch and dinner. Again, I waited until I was truly hungry before I dined this evening at 8:30 pm.
All is well.
Day 5 USA (Utah – visiting)
NFD for me today. Got in a good power walk last evening amid playing game night with daughter and granddaughter then watching UTexas scamper past Notre Dame. I am a huge NCAA football fan, plus had a daughter at that game cheering for UT.
Doing pretty well – was able to avoid a lovely doughnut at the church coffee-shop yesterday even though I often let that be my one indulgence of a trip out here.
Plans are to do some hiking in the Wasatch Mountains near Sundance today!
Best to you all!
Day. 5. FD. NJUSA Long end of summer party weekend. No blatant overeating but rich foods- feel like my body needs a day to rest and recover. Looking forward to my fast day. In the past I would have kept on eating but I am listening to my body and know it’s time to fast and reset my goals. Thanks so much to all of you who answered my questions on 16:8 and tdee my first week I needed a little help and you were amazing answered right back and now I feel like I am a bit more on top of the 5:2 life style. Thank you
US, Day 5, NFD.
Monday is usually a Fast day but as it’s US Labor Day, I am home and do not fast well at home. I will do it tomorrow.
Hubby and I took a short bike ride through Liberty State Park in NY Harbor and stopped at a park restaurant for wine and tuna tartare tacos. Then made a sensational dinner of cod and clam stew with a splash of pernod. I am still in 119 land this morning. Three days in a row, so this is getting REAL. 30 minutes of MELT method for my back and hips.
I am having a splendid late breakfast of jalapeno smoked bacon and farmstand tomatoes. If any of you are ever in the Lake George/Warrensburg area of NY, stop by Oscar’s Smokehouse.
Gozo, Malta
Baby sitting my one month grandson this morning so my daughter could catchup on sleep. After lunch she went back to sleep bout an hour ago. This evening we’re going for a walk and my other daughter is joining us with her seven month son.
Today is a fast day for my husband and I. I had a smoothie for lunch at 180 calories. This evening it’s baked fish with capers, garlic and tomatoes plus salad leaves.
Lany36 I have tried 5:2 but switched to 4:3 for this past two months. For me it meant higher weight loss. Since starting 5:2 and 4:3 on 6 June I’ve managed to lose 10.5 kilos.
Have a great Day/evening everyone. Keep strong and tomorrow is another day.
