17 / FD / Derby UK
Back off my hols. My son was having investigative tests for meningitis, but thankfully he’s fine. I only had one ‘cheat day’ but didn’t manage my fasts and have put 3lbs back on. Fasting today, Monday and Wednesday to try and get back on the straight and narrow.
Will catch up with all the posts I’ve missed on Monday!
Day 16: Pacific NW USA, liquid only FD
Maybe it’s because I’m at 26 hours of a 36 hour fast, or because d.m.w2’s food description sounded so whole and wholesome or laughing while picturing Elphaba’s little angel and devil arguing from her shoulders, but most likely it’s Fuvvie’s condolences to Fishing Gran that are turning me a little verklempt tonight. Reading these posts not only helps me get healthier every day but really makes me feel like we’re holding hands in a big hug around the globe! Godspeed, everyone.
Day 17 Italy – NFD
I didn’t make a liquid only Fast yesterday but, i kept under 500 calories. For dinner i had a small jacket potato with a ragù sauce full of all the left over veg in the fridge (courgettes, mushrooms, red pepper, leek, carrots and a fresh chilli)…not much of a ragù at all then !!
Today i’m tracking on myfitnesspal and have been swimming with my little girl (she floats rather than swims), we get told off because she is lazy and won’t kick her legs!
Have a lovely weekend everyone xx
Hello everyone! 17 challenge.
I have not been much to the forum, I had a very difficult week, I discovered that I have lymphedema, had never heard of it, I’m 56 years old and never a doctor talked about it.
Does anyone here have this problem, swollen legs, aching to touch, fewer larger than the upper.
If someone has this disease would like to exchange knowledge.
Day 17 / Tweed Coast Australia / NFD
Stress is still getting the better of me so I’ve been eating sporadically and in a way that is far from what puts me in that ‘zone’ of balance. I’ve continued to stick to whole food, low carb, no sugar except what was in a few frozen blueberries mixed into some cottage cheese, which I’m happy about. It’s just that I’m grazing which I find less fulfilling than meals planned with care ahead of time.
Day 17 USA (Illinois)
NFD today. Trying to decide how to proceed for fasts this next week as I have a PEO luncheon on my normal Monday of fasting. Guess I will fast on Sunday even though I am playing piano for church. I will be fine in the morning! Often fast days leave me not thinking too well as the day goes along. It’s easier to just veg, read, nap, etc. unless I can do gardening or such work that doesn’t take too much thinking!
ANAIDE – that edemea condition sounds so painful! My husband had edemea with cellulitis in his legs last winter that was also very painful. I hope you can get some help.
Bethany – so glad your son did not have meningitis. Whew. Hope he continues to get better.
Day 17 NJ USA NFD finished my 36-hour fast Thursday into Friday felt great and unfortunately lost a very beloved member of our family my sweet aunt, so I spent all day Friday on the road traveling to and then home from her funeral. Still having problems with that old devil ‘carbs’ . Had a croissant at brunch and in 3 slices of bread and butter before my dinner arrived – not good bread not a good coissant just didn’t even think about it – started eating. Working on not eating so mindlessly. Cutting portions down sticking to my FD got to get bread under control. Have a strong day.
Day 17: Gloucestershire, UK: Fast-day: Hopefully the full 36-hour liquid-only one. I feel strong at the moment at 4.30pm. As long as I get to bed-time, I’ll be fine til tomorrow breakfast.
Well done my liquid-only 36-hour buddies who have done it this week…that means YOU…..Pissupoosa and NorthernDawn and (hopefully) Back2thefuture. Sorry if I missed anyone, I only have time to skim the entries, I’m afraid!
Keep up all the good work, everyone out there. xx
Hello
43 slowly been putting on a stone a year currently 12 stone and 5″3 Have done all the diets last one was eggs and grapefruit ☹️ Would like to join in on sept 1st. Have been very good in past with fitness however developed policemans heel / Plantus F, which prevents me from exercising, sat in the bath and decided I needed to get rid of a stone plus to help feet and see them! I am fairly heathy my problem is evening nibbles and wine after kids are in bed! So this will be a challenge even for two days.
Day 17 Edinburgh UK
A good day under Tdee. lots of running with my grandchild, he’s only just 3 and has boundless energy, just pleased I’ve lost weight and can keep up!!
Anaide Lipoedema sounds a very painful condition, I hope you can find some relief.
Bethany, such a relief for you! Hope your little one is better soon.
Stay strong every one, onaards and down!
Day 17: Pacific NW USA, NFD under TDEE
Yes Ciren2, thank you, I did make it to 36 hours liquid only yesterday. The 80% dark chocolate was calling very loudly because I started to feel a little “silly” right before bed, I even took the chocolate bar out of the cupboard, got distracted reading the label to see how many cals in a serving – 240 for a 40g serving! Luckily the better part of this WOL’s new habits stopped me in my tracks.
Anaide – sorry that you have an added challenge. I don’t know anyone with that condition but I did see something when I googled about “eat to starve lymphedema” at http://www.lymphnotes.com/pubpage.php/id/640/
Of course I’m not qualified to give advise on this but it sounds very much like the foods recommended by “our doctors” Mosley and Fung! Good health wishes for you!
Itsmyturn – so sorry to hear about your aunt. I wouldn’t worry about your short bout of emotional carb comfort. I think being mindful can also mean permitting short digressions with allowances that you set for yourself.
Eyelash – yes, please join our “club” of remarkable people with your same challenges! We post daily, start our posts with where we are from, the actual day of the month and whether it’s a fasting day for you or non-fast.
I took a huge departure from my usual once a week weigh-in and stepped on the scale this morning after yesterday’s FD. I dropped 1.4 pounds since the last time I was on the scale 3 days ago. So I’m at my goal on the 17th that I had set for myself by the 15th – just 2 days over! I always weigh after a FD because I feel it’s comparing apples and apples, even if it’s less because of water weight or whatever, as long as the next time I weigh after a FD and it’s gone down then I’m still on the right path. I slipped on a jacket for this morning’s rainy farmer’s market. I haven’t worn it since 2012 and I could zip it up!
Day 17 USA NFD
Walked 3 miles today.
Weight today is 174.2 lbs., up from my September lowest weight of 173.8
Trying to focus on being positive. That’s why I love this group. We all have various life situations that sidetrack us from time to time but we return to the program with renewed dedication.
Question: has anyone followed just the 16:8 plan – same everyday? Is it an acceptable variation of 5:2? I’m thinking that 16:8 might work better with my work schedule. However I read somewhere that 16:8 doebsn’t work that well for most women. I’m 70 years old with about 30 more pounds to drop.
Wishing everyone a great day.
Day 18 NFD NZ
Just wondering if any of the people here who aim for liquid only FD can tell me a bit about why you do this?
I’ve been under the impression that 1/4 TDEE or less is all we need to do for a FD, for me it’s just under 450cals and I find it pretty easy to stick to but I definitely look forward to my two small meals and each one of those 450cals.
I’m wondering if you are consuming your cals as liquid or trying to have no cals at all during the fast?
I don’t want to increase my discomfort level for an emotional reward/sense of achievement when I already get as good feeling from my fast, but if there’s an added benefit that I don’t know if I’d be interested to hear about what the intent of liquid only is. Thanks all in advance for any information you have to share
Hi Lany I was happy with my small meal of 1/4 tdee but I decided to try liquid only. I have water, a few cups of coffee with milk and look forward to my bone broth in the evening. Not sure how many calories are in my homemade bone broth (bone stock cooked with vegetables and then strained). So while there are some calories taken they would be still less than my normal intake on a fd. Taking liquid only I feel gives my digestion a good rest and I love the lightness I feel. Also don’t need to think what to have lol. I have never tried a water only fast day as I am happy so far. I think if you are happy with what you are doing and getting results that is good but if you wanted to try it and see how it feels why not give it a go. You may decide it’s not for you.
Day 17, checking in at 11: 40 pm, central time, Minnesota, USA a NFD
Weight today down 1 lb from yesterday. That is about half a Kilogram. Those liquid fast days after low carb days seem to be something a person can count on to reduce weight. We went out to a Mexican restaurant tonight. Not low carb, to be sure! I ate the meat and greens from my lettuce wrap choice, and brought home the rest for tomorrow. I think I stayed within TDEE and also satisfied my “want” for a couple nachos and other tasty things. My husband was so uncomfortable after eating a half of his choice. Great to think we are voluntarily reducing our intake as a result of 5:2.
Best of luck and good thoughts for everyone.
Day 18 Italy – FD
Lany36 i aim for liquid only fasts for different reasons, once i start to eat i find it very difficult to stop and have ruined many a 500cal Day, i enjoy a rest from calorie counting, with only liquids my body has more time to burn up more of my stored fats, it makes me feel powerful, and if i just get too hungry i can usually keep within my 500cals and i’m still a winner!
Tomorrow family arrive for a week so i thought i’d better try and get a good Fast in before they arrive, even though i will try to Fast as normal while they are here.
Yesterday was ok, stayed within my TDEE …just!
Lany – if what you are doing works for you there is no reason to change anything.
I ditto what Coda, Northern and Holly have said about liquid only fasting, we may have tried it for various reasons, at least for me I didn’t try it for an emotional reward or sense of aceivement but hoped it would benefit my 5:2 efforts. Coffee and white tea seem to keep me satisfied on a FD. I add bone broth because it supplies some good nutrients and electrolytes for just 60-75 cals. In contrast, if I eat a little solid food my body will not give up it’s insistence for more. So, for me a 36 hour liquid fast is one of the variantions I can use to keep strong on my 2 days of fasting.
I have read about other physical and mental benefits to total fasting but Dr’s Mosley and Fung are the ones to refer to for those facts.
Day 18 – Switzerland – FD
This week has been all over the place but I missed a FD when I was ill so thought I’d fit it in here.
One of the reasons this way of eating works so well is that it is so adaptable. I played around a lot with how to eat 1/4 TDEE on FDs but found that splitting it in three small meals made me feel very hungry. Now I stick to black/herbal tea all day (always have a thermos with me!) with miso soup at lunch, as the salt in it helps avoid mid-afternoon headaches. Then loads of veggies and protein for dinner (hearty lentil soup or big stir fry usually) followed by an early night with a full stomach!
If i stick to this, I sleep well and keep the hunger pangs at bay. I dearly wish NFDs were as simple and satisfying!
Day 18 Australia NFD
Lany I didn’t start off water fasting, but have worked my way up to it and actually find it a lot easier. I don’t have to think about food or awakening the hunger dragon once I start eating. After my first one I really enjoyed feeling “empty” though that sounds funny. I felt like it gave my body a really good break. I drink heaps of water, at least three litres, and sometimes some stock if I need it but mostly not. Like someone else said if you can’t get through you still have the 500 or however many calories your 1/4 tdee is.
I don’t think it is for everyone though. Do what works for you.
Planning on water fasting tomorrow. Looking forward to it after the weekend. Not sure which other day I’ll do as have heaps of social things on and still have visitors and a family birthday.
Good luck everyone and Lany just keep doing what works for you.
Sunshine Coast Aus Day 18: NFD: This has been the craziest week for me. Don’t think I did one FD and didn’t weigh regularly as I usually do. My husband left today for about a month. I want to do Monday, Wed and Fri FDs. I’ll weigh on Tues, Thurs and Saturday. I have been struggling but feel like I’m turning a corner.
I’m really impressed by how well people on this thread are doing. Planning seems to be the outcome of watching NFDs. I’ve never been a planner. Guess I have to learn. Must try miso soup which everyone seems to talk about. Good luck for the coming week everyone. Half way through. Time to reassess for the run down into the second half. Time to find the original resolve.
UK day 18 NFD Morning all, just back from a lovely break in Copenhagen ,an absolute beautiful place and far too many tempting treats! Just hope all the miles I walked will even things out😀 Going to settle back into a routine today and try and get a result at the end of September, will spend an hour or so this afternoon catch up on all the posts x
Hi Lany,
There is nothing magical about 1/4 TDEE. Its just a compromise that MM thought most people could do. I water fast but its only 6:1 now as I reached my goal weight back in March. There are health benefits to be had by water fasting. I actually find it easier to do that trying to eat 1/4 TDEE. Liver works better, system gets a clean out, blood glucose plummets. Give it a try, if you can do it great, if not don’t worry and stick to 1/4 TDEE.
Day 18 / Tweed Coast Australia / NFD
Finally finished one of the class assignments that was stressing me out, though only got through it by grazing today! Other people handle this by cups of coffee. I don’t drink coffee or alcohol and I instead graze. At least I continued to stick within the limits of low carb whole foods which entailed a number of teaspoons of macadamia butter throughout the day, some of my black tahini fudge mud, spoons of coconut butter, cottage cheese, sheep milk yogurt, etc. …All soothing comfort foods for me. It could be worse!
Day 18: Non-fast day Gloucestershire, UK: Success with the water-only fasting yesterday…total about 34.5 hours.
Lany36: My reason for fasting like this is because I am an all or nothing person, as far as eating is concerned. So it’s easier for me. Like HollyLJ and others, if I’m not careful, once I eat a little….I just can’t stop! I don’t ever count calories….preferring to keep it simple.
Back2the future…You DID it!
US, Day 18, NFD. …. went a little crazy at charcuterie/fromage dinner last night. Up a bit but no big deal.
Patty and Pissapusa…I made a socca last night. A chickpea flour pizza from Nice. Out of this world, great for company. No wheat flour. The only thing missing from this recipe — fresh sage leaves for the last broiler step. I’ve tried this dish before, but this recipe really works well.

Fishing gran condolences.
After my weekend break I’m back home. This morning at our hotel I weighed myself and I was 69 kilos. More weight than I started this September challenge by 0.2 kilos. I know I ate a lot but will weigh next Thursday as usual and see how my weight is after two fast days ie I’ll fast tomorrow and half a day Tuesday and half a day Wednesday as I’m eating out Wednesday evening.
Anyway tomorrow is another day and the main thing is to continue on fasting after a setback or a weekend feasting.
I hope you all enjoyed the weekend. Good evening/ night everyone. Stay strong.
