  • USA, it’s very interesting what you are doing.
I was wondering, are you planning to take a multi vit and minerals?
Just personally, I’d always include an apple! The old saying about ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ I think has some good basis. I read recently they contain something that protects your heart and help with sugar regulation. http://www.webmd.com/heart/news/20110412/apple-good-for-your-heart

I’m just into the night after my third FAST day (I have just water and tea) so will have breakfast at noon tomorrow. Really, hunger is not a problem at all; just habit of eating at certain times and triggers (tv programmes lol!) and the fun and interest that eating brings to my day.

    Speedy

    funny u talked about apples

i eat half on fastday & up2 2 on nonfastdays

i never core them i eat everything except the stem

lately i have been putting apples in a chopper w/ egg and oatmeal & nuts & ricotta sour cream and the seasoning

making what i call apple pie pancakes (still experimenting also with grinding air popcorn) 😀

u might like that mayb u’ll come up w/ something better

    definitely vitamin & minerals

    couscous has a great point w/ low gi/gl 2

the habit part is so true w/tv 🙂

thanks 4 the link will look @ it

    Couscous

    lol

did research the 70% i was probably tired

but thanks again 4 thinking about low gi/gl

i have chart of low glicymic index foods

that will help in these 11days 😀

USA I think you are over-analysing. Lots of people go 11 days not eating at all when ill with no noticeable ill-effects.

If I were you I’d eat good quality meat and fish, a handful of nuts/seeds (for essential oils) and a handful of berries and MOUNTAINS of leafy veg. You might find it easier, rather than trying to divi it up into tiny meals to just eat once a day. That way you wouldn’t need to bother with 500cal days, you’d be doing a mini fast every day – rather like Ramadan.

30 years ago, I got to know the UK’s first allergist – a clever and kind man. He, and his whole family only ate once a day. They were all very fit and healthy. I’m not sure its how cave man would have eaten, though. Hunter-gatherers would presumably have nibbled on the leaves and berries as they went along to save carrying too much.

    Ruthi

    actually no

Jello? Every day? Presumably with sweeteners in it?

    hi ruthi

    up way late can’t sleep

yep it has xylitol a natural sweetner my dr said that
all the other artificial sweeteners can’t have except stevia & the above

    it’s gooooooooooooooooooooooooooood

    Yuk!

There’s natural and there’s natural. It may have been made from nI can’t find the reference now, but ALL sweet things, ‘natural’ or otherwise provoke an insulin response. The result in the longer term is/can be insulin resistance and then T2D.

Xylitol is about as natural as cocaine. here’s what I found about how it is manufactured “Xylitol is a molecular cousin to sugar and is derived from the crushed fibers of sugar cane […birch wood or corn…] using a multi-step chemical reaction that involves the use of sulfuric acid, calcium oxide, phosphoric acid and active charcoal. The end product is a a bleached, powdery blend of sugar alcohols that taste sweet on the tongue but are not absorbed by the body.”

    whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah 🙁

i get my Xylitol from the amish here in pa usa
    no grocery store

    they do not use

chemicals or even machinery everything is organic
it is what they have always use instead of sugar

    ??????????????

    & stevia is a plant

So how do they get the Xylitol out of the source material? Do they have some secret process? Because there ain’t no organic Xylitol on the market anywhere else that I can find. I assume that if you are buying it direct from the Amish they are principled enough not to be kidding you with sleight of hand descriptions,

As for Stevia, have you tried it? Its revolting! Even the Stevia extract (Truvia in the UK) has a really off aftertaste.

And they are still sweeteners, they still mess with your brain, and your pancreas, even if they don’t give you cancer (but apparently they might in large doses).

Don’t get me wrong, I have been known to eat junk food (although not on a daily basis any more). I just don’t kid myself its nutritious.

    ruthi

u got me thinking very hard

“And they are still sweeteners, they still mess with your brain, and your pancreas”

i will not use any sweeteners on these 11 days

by the way there isn’t any aftertaste 4 stevia 4 me

but saccharin % NutraSweet ugh ugh yuk

hope that did not sabotage my goal 🙁

    i really appreciate u as a sounding board 🙂

Hi USA, no I am still 5:2 having fallen off the wagon and got back on again. Have lost between 4-5 lb in last 2 weeks to help get me back on track. Re the chocolate issue. I looked up some research following your comments. Lots out there but it seems that 70% may be the magic no re health benefits. Problem I have with the possible benefits are that with all the other research to impact in a positive way on internal health does chocolate become part of or instead of other dietary regimes. As you have said and many know some foods interact in different ways when combined. I still follow K.I.S.S. only because I am fairly lucky with my health.

    The Truth About Vitamins

Vitamins without doubt are vital to our health.
And it remains possible that high dose vitamin
supplements will one day be proven to protect
against illnesses like heart disease and cancer.
But so far, definitive evidence for these claims
remains largely elusive. And as we discover more
about some vitamins, it is increasingly clear that
in large doses they can have unexpected,
    and sometimes dangerous consequences.

Well, this week I haven’t fasted. I’m staying with my daughter in the south of France because she just had a baby. She lost a lot of blood and is very anaemic, so I am busily encouraging her to eat well, and watching me fast would worry her.

I’ll watch the vitamin programme – it doesn’t seem to be barred here, although lots of UK programmes are. My french isn’t good enough for stand-up comedy!

I don’t eat animals that have parents, either.

Fish, mostly salmon and tuna, I will eat. They have bad parents and are more socially acceptable, with lots of protein.

a tout alors & merci encore une autre fois

    vive la vie!!!!

I’m sure that butternut squash will do perfectly! I’ve just picked a huge one in the veggie patch for roasting tomorrow.

I don’t know how to do all the gubbins on the site so I haven’t done a profile but I’m 45, mum of three teenagers living in central Brittany, France since 1999. Before that I lived in the UK for five years where my French husband learned to speak English. Before that I had another life as a croupier in the south of France.
Always had to watch my weight – not fair; skinny brother, tall, willowy mother.
I’ve done ww on and off for years and finally lost the weight on my own (with my wii for company). It’s been creeping back on though and, like a lot of us here, I saw the documentary on 5:2 and have been 5:2ing since July. Have some great days and some horrendous ones. Haven’t weighed in because I don’t want to be disappointed. Sometimes clothes feel looser and sometimes not. It may be working. I’ll have to set a date to get on those scales!
Nothing particular happened to make me go veggie . I just realised I didn’t like the idea of killing animals for food when we can get all we need from other sources.I don’t see a burger or a chicken wing anymore, I just see a dead animal. It’s only my very humble, personal opinion and I don’t push it on anyone (and I’m not asking for anyone’s opinion). Certainly not here in France! It’s a very ‘meaty’ country and a lot of people think I’m nuts! Imagine if I tell them I fast twice a week too!!!
No I’m not a chef and we call ourselves Les Bretons. I’m an honorary one;)
    Bye for now!

“It’s a very ‘meaty’ country and a lot of people think I’m nuts! Imagine if I tell them I fast twice a week too!!!”

It’s a meaty country here in the USA also.

I suspect that eating behaviors will change due to the success of fasting. Diets and exercise alone have not worked, while a fasting lifestyle, in all the different variations, will succeed.

    We see the success here.

    Glad that we could connect.

    Heureux que nous pourrions connecter.

I’m following your project with great interest USA! You’re doing great 🙂

What are you planning to do to check what effect this has had on you? Is it a question of comparing your (average?) blood sugar readings with before or is there another way?
Sorry if this is a stupid question!

    hi,

    speedy

it is never stupid, by asking a question, ur intelligent 🙂

i will post results & what test 2 do (i’m no dr or even have a medical/science brain but have always loved science so i guess i’m a right brain girl loving the left brain sigh 🙂 )

now i know that the men took 11 days & women took 2 months ugh

i figured since my body has been fasting b4 & is used 2 this

    speedy

    sorry 🙁

forgot u did read the report

If you want to watch some seriously depressing TV go to Youtube and find ‘The men who made us fat’ and ‘The men who made us thin’. The only thing is they were made before fasting was thought of as mainstream, so we can all hope that beats the statistics on other slimming regimes.

    @ruthi
“If you want to watch some seriously depressing TV ”

    No – not this year.

Could you sum it up for us?

    ruthi did u c all b low?

    The Truth About Vitamins

Vitamins without doubt are vital to our health.
And it remains possible that high dose vitamin
supplements will one day be proven to protect
against illnesses like heart disease and cancer.
But so far, definitive evidence for these claims
remains largely elusive. And as we discover more
about some vitamins, it is increasingly clear that
in large doses they can have unexpected,
    and sometimes dangerous consequences.

I think in years to come our current eating habits will be looked at in a similar way to smoking in the 40s and 50s – when they thought it cleared your chest and drs would offer you a smoke!

I saw The Men Who Made Us Fat and things that stuck in my mind were:
    – Politicians deciding to believe ‘science’ that said Fat was the baddie not sugar. The reports that found sugar was the real culprit were quietly shelved.
And the chap who pushed Fructose corn syrup rather than real sugar when sugar prices rose and the ‘uncertainty’ about how HFCS is used in our bodies. It’s processed very different than proper sugar in our bodies. Voices that doubted that fat was the baddie – such as Atkins for an example – were poo pooed.

    – Supersizing started by a chap after he saw McD’s customers eating every last crumb of their chips and that bigger servings bring more profit than they cost to produce.

    – How marketing has really mucked up the whole food market by cleverly misleading so that Low Fat usually equals high sugar!!! And so people who thought they were making healthy choices according to current science, simply were not.

Even now, the old mantras are still so prevalent so if you say you are fasting just for 24 hours people nearly faint with horror! Dieticians still say eat every few hours 🙁 Even though fasting is a very old tradition.
If you read the Diabetes forums you can see how many people are having to research for themselves what they should and should not eat.

I know none of this is new but somehow it helps me to get it all in order in my mind to write it out 🙂

    @speedy
“I think in years to come our current eating habits will be looked at in a similar way to smoking in the 40s and 50s ”

This has already proven to be true.

“I know none of this is new but somehow it helps me to get it all in order in my mind to write it out ”

Some of this is new & thanks for clearing this up more.

    How about combining:

World’s most dangerous food destinations with great food?

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/destinations/2013/09/28/most-dangerous-food-destinations/2883369/

There’s something to be said about people’s fascination with treating food as a diversion rather than fuel.

I watched most of ‘The men who made us….’ a while back, but not recently. But the general gist was that the big companies have more influence on governments than honest doctors and researchers.

Vitamins wasn’t a great surprise, and rather disappointingly only looked at A, C and E. It wasn’t really anything new. Vit C doesn’t prevent colds, but does shorten them, Vit E doesn’t cure heart disease (but no research on prevention), high dose vit A supplements seem to cause osteoporosis and liver disease (but natural Vit A doesn’t.

I read recently that people who take vitamin pills live longer, but without reading the original research I can’t take a view on whether, if you are destined to live longer you are more likely to take vitamins, or they actually make a difference. It annoys the hell out of me that so much research is flawed, or limited in its usefulness because the simple questions haven’t been asked!
