  • Hello, I did my first day of 5-2 so looking for word to my second fasting day on Monday. I am also a Weight Watcher do you think my meds will have any adverse effect on the out come of 5-2 or will I have wait and see? JIPWGP

JIPWGP, you don’t specify your meds, are you on corticosteroids and/or thyroxine? Of course we can’t give medical advice, but maybe someone here is in a similar situation to yours.

    Hi my meds are
    pravastatin 20mg x 1
    Levothyroxine 75 micrograms
    Bisoprolol fumarate 1.25 mg
    Omeprazole 20mg
    Prednisolone 5mg
If you shake me I rattle.

JIPWGP, I’m not on the meds that you’re on, but my understanding is this:

Levothyroxine is for treating hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism itself tends to cause weight gain and make weight loss more difficult. It’s not completely clear to what extent the levothyroxine helps with that.

Prednisolone treats many inflammatory or autoimmune conditions. An unfortunate side effect can be weight gain. I am not sure, but it may also make it more difficult to lose weight.

Hopefully someone else with personal experience will also respond, but my guess would be that it might be more difficult for you to lose weight than it would be if you weren’t sick and didn’t need the medications. It should, however, still be possible, if you are careful not to over-eat on non-fasting days and can be patient enough to wait for the pounds to come off slowly, and even more possible if you are also able to increase your activity level. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply, it’s what I expected really, but i have lost 56 lb in 17 months and I have kept 50 lb of that off since July 2011 so I want to give the 5-2 a go to see if it would help with the last few pounds and keep them off.

JIPWGP, congratulations on your 50+ pound weight loss. If you can do that, I think you will have good success with 5:2!

First of all, JIPWGP many congratulation on you success fo far. Franfit is right. Corticosteroids can make you put on weight and/or make it rather more difficult to lose. You’ve done so brilliantly so far, I’m sure you will find a way round the problem. For what it’s worth, this is my experience.

I was put on the wretched things 6 years ago for polymyalgia rheumatica, i.e. pain and stiffness in the joints, limbs and back that makes movement very difficult and painful. Steroids, the doctor said, were the only solution. Initially I refused but was then persuaded, but not until I had managed to beat the doc down to an initial dose of 20 mg.

Certainly, the steroids worked. The pain started to ease almost immediately and within a week had disappeared BUT I was kept on the beastly things for 2 1/2 years, albeit in gradually decreasing doses. The weight piled on – not fun for someone who, despite eating healthily, found it impossible to lose. 5:2 hadn’t yet happened. Steroids also screw up your immune system and for me the result was shingles, on the face close to the eyes.

When I remarried in 2010 I looked so revolting with my big moon face, my little piggy eyes like two currants in a bun, and my big fat belly, I deleted all my wedding photos. At this time I also returned to university to do post-grad study and all the various ID cards I needed were adorned with this hideous creature.

When I eventually came off the steroids about a year later, I immediately lost 2-3 kilos without even trying. A few months later, Michael’s TV programme went out and both I and my husband were convinced. We’re both still following 5:2, slowly but surely we are losing weight, and it is staying off. Hubby had less to lose than me and is close to his goal. I still have a way to go, but for the first time a way of eating is working for me.

Thanks for your kind words I take the steroids for the same thing polymyalgia rheumatica, I have had this now for 3 years so I lost the weight while taking the steroids and my under active thyroid for 20 years I had to put a lot of effort into my diet but I would not give up,I knew it was now or never. I think I left this very late in life and I will always be sorry for that but I am trying to make up for lost time, my wardrobes are full of size 12’s and a few tops in size 14’s I can live with this. Thanks again.

Hi again, I forgot to say I was on 20mg at first and gradually came down to 5 gm over two years I did try to come down lower but failed and had to back to 5gm I will have to stay at this for life I am told.

The fact that you lost all that weight while taking steroids is nothing short of miraculous. You are a star! It has taken me nearly 15 months to lose 22 lbs, and that includes a 5-month plateau. So your achievement is extraordinary, to me at least.

Certainly, give 5:2 a try. Progress may be slow, especially as you don’t now have a lot of weight to lose, but don’t be discouraged. There are several other health benefits, like reduced BP, reduced cholesterol (I see like me you are on statins), healthy blood glucose and generally feeling good and energised.

Someone will correct me if I’m wrong but as far as I recall from the TV show and the book, 5:2 wasn’t initially developed as a weight loss programme. Weight loss turned out to be a very desirable side effect.

Hi, thanks again for your support, I am on my second fasting day, Friday was my other fasting day but I got this morning and thought I would do it today Sunday, no time like the present. I do keep weighing myself almost every day and unless I take the scales down the garage and if I do I am sure they will not like the atmosphere down there and will differently not give me the correct result. Like I said I will be going to WW Tuesday morning, I will let u know how I get on even a pound will be wonderful. 5-2 seems easy to do just hope it works.

Hi everyone I thought you might like to read this little poem.
I have seen this little poem and it’s nice to remember.
Weight loss is a journey – tackle it in stages.
Some may get there very quick, whilst others may take ages.
Weight loss is a journey, some take the stopping train,
And they get off at the station, and then get back on again.
While other lucky people seem to travel by express,
With no apparent effort, each week they weigh in less.
For some of us the journey, too often seems uphill.
We never seem to get that far, struggle though we will.
Weight loss is a journey – anyone can go
But as you travel on your way there’s something you should know.
Losing weight’s a journey that different for everyone,
Some are happy to stroll along while others need to run.
If you want to complete this journey, then forget about the rest.
Each of you must travel the way that suits you best.
As long as you believe it, you WILL get there some day,
And so what does it matter if you’ve gone the pretty way?
Weight loss is a journey, that certainly is true,
And each of you must travel in the way that best suits YOU.
You’ll make much better progress if you go at your own pace.
‘Cos weight loss is a journey – and NEVER is a race…..

Sums up the whole weight loss business in a nutshell, doesn’t it? Thanks for sharing this clever little poem.
