  • Hi there,
I just decided today to start this after doing paleo and low carb for about a year, with very slow weight loss. I’m looking to lose about 30 lbs.

Really looking forward to being able to eat “restricted” foods. This brings me to my question, can you really eat foods you’ve been avoiding or should you try to stick with a squeaky clean diet?

    Thanks in advance.

You can approach it however you like and figure out what suits you best. Some people approach it like a ‘diet’ and try to be ‘clean’ all the time. Some calorie count religiously every day and some wing it. Whatever works for you – do that.

So far I have not really changed the composition of my previous diet. If anything I am a bit naughtier now than I ever allowed myself to be before (on non-fastdays) with my choices. It’s worked fine for me up to now and I’ve lost well over 50lb but I’m screeching to a halt now, despite radically increasing my exercise recently. So I need to have a little look at what I’m doing and make some changes. Cutting back on the sugar is something that I intend to try on non-fastdays and I may try to sway my intake more towards plant based proteins than carbs for a while and see if that kicks things off again. At this point I only have another 14lb or so to lose to get me very hapily close to what is supposed to be my ‘ideal weight’, so I figure these tweaks are worth a go for the ‘final push’. I’m not that fussed if it doesn’t work though. I’ve never been so slim since puberty, so everything’s a bonus from here.

    Tracy:

The radical increase in exercise is probably the cause of your ‘screeching to a halt’. Your muscles retain water to repair themselves, and the water weight masks the fat weight loss. Depending on your exercise and whether or not you are ‘pushing’ yourself – doing more and more – it could take up to two months (or more) before your weight loss starts to show up again.

    Good Luck!

Hi Simcoeluv, thanks for that. Yes, I think some of it is just that and I was expecting it not to move much for a couple of months but I’m past that now and I can feel in myself that I’m just not being as strict with myself as I should be. It would be fine to be lax if I was just aiming to maintain but I do still have a little to lose so I need to pay more attention I think.

The exercise is swimming and I’ve gone from once, maybe twice, a week to 4-5 times a week for at least an hour. I’m having to push myself to improve my speed just to raise my heart rate though, as just bimbling back & forth for 1 hour doesn’t break any kind of sweat at all these days. I really need to start doing some classes or something instead sometimes but I get to the gym and the pool just starts winking at me 😉

I know what I need to do – just can’t be bothered to do it is the issue. I shall kick myself up the posterior though – thanks for the support simcoeluv.

    Tracy:

Swimming is so good for you. Keep up the momentum you have with your exercise because it is much better for your health than losing your last few pounds. The pounds will come off eventually because you know how to get rid of them!

    Good Luck!
