  • Hi, sorry but, I’m new to this Forum … I wanna start the 5:2 diet but was little bit confused over weather .. on fast days, should I eat no calories … just drink herbal teas, or I can still eat up to 400 cals max??. And these 400 cal max can be spread over the Fast days??.

    Kind regards
    Watabe

    Hi and welcome Watabe!

Not sure if you are male or female, but you should have 600 cals if a man and 500 if a woman, its pretty straightfoward lol
Also if you have a look at the tope of this page, under the how? section, you will find a tool that will calculate how many calories you should consume on your normal days.
I hope this helps and good luck!! πŸ™‚

    Hi Angie090465

Thxs very much for the help, much appreciated, Btw .. I’m a male and I go to the gym 5-6 days a week … normally hit the weights and do cardio every 2-3 days!!. Just wanted to lose a bit of weight as I have gained a bit last few months!!. So wanna try out this 5:2 diet to see how things go .. I’m a tiny bit worried that I might find it difficult at first to “fast” as I’m unsure as to how long I need to leave between the meals I have on the 600 Cal fast days!!. I know for Micheal … he has 300 @ breakfast and 300 for dinner but .. does it just depend on what works for me? … as long as I don’t go over the 600 cal max right?.

Thxs again for the help Angie,
    Kind Regards
    Watabe

    http://www.examiner.com/article/hugh-jackman-talks-wolverine-diet-splurge-intermittent-fasting

    also a scientific muscle builder

& Exercise scientist suggests skipping breakfast, intermittent fasting

Exercise scientist John Berardi says intermittent fasting is an effective way to melt body fat, boost the release of anti-aging hormones, and improve insulin sensitivity.

β€œIntermittent fasting reduces insulin levels, so you can actually increase your insulin sensitivity for better blood-sugar management,” Berardi told Details Aug. 21. β€œAt the same time, your body will release more growth hormone, which helps to preserve lean tissue and burn fat tissue.”

Berardi says eating breakfast is optional, and slams the often-stated diet mantra that skipping meals slows metabolism. If anything, occasionally skipping meals and practicing intermittent fasting can improve metabolism by helping with blood-sugar management, appetite control, weight loss and increased cell repair.

β€œThe idea that metabolism slows radically in response to not eating certain meals in a single day just isn’t accurate,” said Berardi, who has a Ph.D. in exercise physiology and nutrient biochemistry. β€œThe amount of calories you’re taking in and the composition of those calories β€” proteins, carbs, and fats β€” are really what impact metabolism.”

For those who cringe even thinking about the word β€œfast,” Berardi pointed out that most people already practice intermittent fasting, regardless of what diet they follow.

β€œNo matter what eating style you follow, you already practice intermittent fasting,” Berardi told T Nation. β€œIf you typically eat dinner by 8 p.m. and breakfast at 8 a.m. the next day, you’re fasting for 12 hours. Some refer to this as a 12/12 eating schedule because it’s 12 hours of fasting and 12 hours of eating.”

Intermittent fasting, or IF, does not mean starving oneself, or even reducing overall calorie intake. IF is an eating program that alternates periods of intentional fasting with intervals of (hopefully, healthy) eating. The eating pattern has recently been touted as a way to lose weight more quickly than conventional, linear dieting and is a cornerstone of many diets, including the Paleo diet.

Berardi, co-founder of Toronto-based Precision Nutrition, experienced dramatic results while experimenting with intermittent fasting. In 2011, Berardi tried several different IF formulas on himself over the span of eight months and was able to shed 20 pounds of body fat while preserving most of his lean muscle mass (see before-and-after photos above).

During the process, Berardi chiseled his body from an already-impressive 10 percent body fat to a super-lean 4 percent. Interestingly, he noted that intermittent fasting isn’t just effective for weight loss, but can also accelerate muscle-mass gain for men who want to gain weight. However, it bears noting that IF is more effective for men than women and is not recommended for everyone.

While Berardi says intermittent fasting can dramatically improve most people’s health, he underscored there’s no one-size-fits-all formula. β€œThe best one is the one that each individual dieter will stick with,” he said.

Again … thxs Angie for the Advice!!.

    Kind regards
    Watabe

    Hiya Watabe,

sounds like you’re off to a flying start. Drinking lots definitely helps keep the hunger pangs at bay.

I’m in my 7th week of IF and can honestly say, it’s a wee bit of a challenge on the Fastng Days but no biggie and more importantly it does work.

The Forums are great for extra support too, whether it be food tips or just encouragement if you’re having a bad day, like a whole new bunch of friends.

Enjoy your evening meal – you earned it.

    Good night x

True … bit of a challenge at 1st as you said but, nothing that we can’t over come with a bit of discipline!!!. Thxs again Hilly66

    Kind Regards

    Hi USA …
Thxs very very much for the info … very interesting read … I must say, it’s given me a new outlook on how to go abouts this new diet and how to adjust accordingly!!!. I’m also really pleased to hear that the word “fast” isn’t what many people think it means and that it can mean something very positive indeed, therefore, not be put off by it as many people’s initial reaction would be “starve” … which totally is not the case and also … can be very beneficial!!!. I think that one of the best things about this 5:2 plan is that it gives room for the person to adjust it to how to make it work for them therefore a kinda of a taylor made diet based on the 5:2 diet lifestyle!!

Thxs again USA … great piece if info … Best of Luck too on yr diet and lifestye!!

    Warm Regards

it is worth repeating what u said because it is the key 2 it all

    take care

    usa

    USA …

No .. I can’t imagine myself even looking like Hugh Jackman … so I’ll just do the absolute best I can on this new and exciting diet … I also don’t have the money to have a pro trainer like hugh to act as a Gym buddy for the motivation of some sort to achieve that kinda body!!.

Anyways … thxs again USA for yr kind words .. again Best of luck !!!

    Watabe

    Well done Watabe!

my next fast day is also Friday πŸ™‚ you will find the more fasts you do the more you will get used to them and feel less worried/stressed/dreading πŸ™‚

    way to go now!! πŸ™‚

I wouldn’t worry about the 600 calorie limit.

I read somewhere that Mosley picked the 600 calorie limit for men out of thin air and its a figure based on anecdote / personal experience not science.

What is important is the drastic calorie reduction.

On a fast day I find I am fine until around 4pm and then start to slump (foggy brain, really hungry) and I eat around then. I don’t count calories. I have a small meal to knock the edge off, but no more. Maybe a couple of Mc Donalds cheeseburgers, or two eggs and some celery sticks, or a fist sized portion of rice and a chicken leg.

I tried eating it all in the morning, but still had the 4pm slump and had difficulty sleeping due to hunger.

I tried eating 3 tiny meals at regular times. This is the next best option for me.

I tried eating it all at night, but found I suffered from 4pm – eating time unnecessarily.

You will have to experiment to find what works for you.

I also agree, a Hugh Jackman body isn’t realistically achievable for most people. I read he weight trained for 3 hours a day and ate a very strict diet to achieve that sort of physique. Who has that sort of free time every day?

    Hello Watabe

Good luck on the 5:2 it doesn’t take long to get into it and that is coming from somebody who loves food!!

BTW I don’t think Hugh Jackman got that body eating 6000 calories a day somehow – didn’t they mean to say 600 in that article!!! πŸ™‚

    Hey Angie

Thxs again for the kind words of incouragement … I’m very determined to stick with this 5:2 plan.. I guess I don’t wanna feel bad if I fail at some point so … gotta keep it up and really excited about it so … good chance to succeed!!!. Nice to hear your next “fast” day is also friday πŸ™‚ .. let me know how you get on and what snacks you had during your 500 cal day!!!.
I’m planning on some green veggies and maybe a protein shake!!.

    Best of luck Angie,

    Watabe

Hi, Im a newbie to all of this, im actually the meal planner for my husband who has never dieted ever!
He is doing really well but im still confused about the calorie intake?!
At the moment he is having a 11am brekkie and dinner around 8pm (due to work commitments it has to be this late) he doesn’t always reach the 600 calorie, should I be giving him a starter salad (I have the 5:2 recipe book) then a meal (obviously not going over the calories)
Soooo many questions but Im confused, we are a on week 2 of the 5:2……

    Hi JFitzy,

Nice to hear from another 5:2 fellow, thxs very much and yea … mee too, I love food, especially the healthy organic kind like Museli and Granola(Granola is my ultimate weakness). But .. with this new diet … I have somehow controlled the cravings … really happy about this!!!. No more torturing myself by waiting once a week for this treat and bingeing and over eating when it comes to Granola day!!!. with the new diet, I found I can have small amounts of all sorts of foods that I really enjoy … it really has helped me control my cravings!!!.

Actually, I read read a few of hughs articles and watched some of his vid’s on Youtube … he did actually eat 6000 cal’s form 10am – 6pm, then fast for 36 hrs!!. This was a part of his ultra strict diet regime!!. But he would also train super hard for 3 hrs in the Gym … but I do understand how you might think 6000 cals is a Massive amount to comprehend but, over 8 Hrs and the type of food he ate was super lean and protein dense!!.

I do weights at the Gym too but not really build, I do however know some of the body builders there take on board 4500 cals and day to maintain that statue, they eat like 10-15 chicken breasts a day on top of the protein and weight gainer shakes!!!.

Anyway … Thxs again JFitzy … wish you best of luck too and hope you will achieve your target and maintain it for a great lifestyle!!!. well … thats what I want anyway!!.

    Kind Regards

    Hi Wyson9,

I think Micheal actually got 600 cal figure based on his own 2000 cal diet so I guess it’s what works for him, he also said that ..on fast days, he’s recommend shedding 1/4 of the total cals for that day… so what he meant was … 1/4 of the 5:2 users normal daily cal intake, be it 2500, 1500 or whatever!!. he didn’t mean it had to be 600 cal … I don’t think so anyway(I could be wrong!!) I guess it’s based on the average persons daily caloric intake??. It’s whatever works for you mate … just like what you said!!.

I personally wouldn’t eat X2 McD’s cheese burgers but thats inly cuz I’m a health freak and I know what’s inside those burgers!!!. There’s a reason why they don’t go off even after 3 years!!! sitting in the cupboard!!!.

Sorry to hear you feel Foggy brain and bit dizzy at times … for me, I would have a cup of herbal tea or maybe earl grey with some skimmed milk!!. It really does keep the hunger pangs at bay!!… have you tried it?.

Yea … Hugh Jackman does have an awesome body … he said he got the workout advice from “the Rock”, not surprising really if you’ve seen some of the Rocks work out vid’s and posts!!. Yea .. many people really don’t have that time and more importantly … the money to have a pro trainer to assit and act like a gym buddy for motivation and to spot him when at the gym!!!. Yr right … he did spend 3hrs at the Gym every day and also took on board 6000 cals for 10am – 6pm … then fast for 36 hrs!!. I guess if I was paid that amount of millions to have a body like that for a film, I’d go through all that no problem, It’s all science mate!!!.

Wyson9 .. thxs for your post and best of Luck with yr 5:2 diet … try to drink some more tea if you feel a slump … I find Green tea also a great help… better a couple of preservative filled Burgers!!!

    Regards
    Watabe

    Hi Watabe!

Sorry just read your post lol, this forum is so great for support and enouragement, it makes a huge difference knowing you are not alone πŸ™‚
Anyway re the snacks on fast days, i dont have any lol, like you i’ll probably have a green tea in the afternoon but thats it, and water of course!
Lunch is at 12, then dinner at 6pm so that way its a nice long fast πŸ˜‰ but i may save some cals for a last hot choc at night, that way it feels like a little treat πŸ™‚

    Have a good evening!

    Hey Angie

Too right .. re the Support and encouragement … It really made my day to hear and get soooo many nice welcomes when I first posted here, Tbh .. I didn’t know what to expect … other forum I’ve been on … some were nice but many … OMG … so many ppl just seemed to go in those forums just to start a fight with abusive content!!! … really makes me think … whats wrong with these ppl?? … have they got nothing else to do?? .. totally uneducated to say the least(sorry for the rant).

Oh .. yes … love a cup of G-tea .. I even find that I don’t really have a need to eat too much as long as I’ve had plenty to drink therefore, not even going near the 600 cal a day!!. But I will have snack on the veggies now and again … just to get in some nutrition and vitamins!!. Hot choc Treat … thast what I like to hear … haha .. I’m up for a cuppa hot choc too, thxs for that, I’ll have one tonight, it’s actually a super green foods Choc flavour i bought from Wholefoods in London!!. Only 30 cals a cup … but I like mine with Almond milk … so .. 60 cals .. hehe!!

You too Angie .. have a great Evevning!! πŸ™‚

    Thanks for reply Watabe!!

I know what you mean about forums and arguing, and so on… I prefer this one by far!!!

I keep hearing about almond milk and i really want to try it now, never thought about it to be honest.. Seen it in the shop so i will give it a go, i love almonds so should be ok πŸ™‚

Take care and enjoy your hot choc πŸ˜‰

    Angie090465 & watabe

    Hi there Watabe!

apologies for late reply, just seen your post lol!!

fast went ok yesterday, a bit of a struggle in the afternoon, but nothing a green tea didn’t fix hehe!!

hope yours went good too, bet you enjoyed your hot choc πŸ™‚

    have a lovely Saturday!!

    hi wiltldnrUSA!

thanks for tip, not sure I have ever seen that kind of milk? will look out for it!! πŸ™‚

Angie, the Hot choc was the icing on the Cake .. i guess it was the only thing that helped me through the day!!.
Yea .. I must admit … I struggled a bit too as I got quite hungry during the evening but I managed to keep the hunger pangs at bay by remembering that the Hunger feeling is the body using up the excess fat … so that made me feel good and kept me motivated till that Hot choc!!!. My 5:2 has kinda turned or adjusted to a “ADF” .. but I’m kinda still fine tuning it to meet my liffestyle but, still keeping it strict-ish!!.

Enjoy the rest of yr weekend Angie.

    Well done Watabe!!

glad the hot choc did the trick hehe!!

it takes time to get used to it all, but after a while it becomes part of your routine…does not mean its any easier lol!!!
as you said, its a lot of fine tuning and adjusting and finding out what works for you..

you too enjoy your weekend!! πŸ™‚

Hi All, does anyone have three meals a day, l like breakfast – 2 eggs, low cal soup with carrot sticks for lunch and fish with hot veg for dinner. Lots of water and herbal tea and I am set. Only loose one pound a week but that’s better than my previous 1200 cal a day diet which only helped me lose one pound per month- depressing. Yes I am active and I do count and record cals on other days too, if I don’t I gain.

I am actually weighing daily as an experiment in finding out more about what foods my body disposes of quickly and which causes me to put on. I have given up salmon and tomatoes for this reason – my body is obviously intolerant to these in terms of the scales. Shame because I love salmon.
