  • Hi – I’m starting the diet tomorrow but would really appreciate any advice or tips anyone can give as I’m not sure how I’ll do/manage on the fast days: I can have problems if my blood sugar gets too low so may have to do fasting when I’m not working (I work part time thankfully) and I’m pretty stuck on doing more exercise as I can’t do much of anything thanks to my dodgy arthritic hip.

    Any advice?!

    Hi and Welcome:

Many people have a little trouble at the start, but usually rapidly get used to their diet days.

It is not unusual for people to find they do best with one high fat/protein meal in the evening. However, if you feel you may have low blood sugar, it might be best to start the day with a high fat/protein breakfast and then one or two smaller high fat/protein snacks in the afternoon and evening. You want high fat/protein because they digest more slowly and provide a more steady stream of blood sugar. Carbs spike your sugar but then leave you with low blood sugar and hungry. You just need to try things and find what works best for you.

The way you do 5:2 is to go to bed, get up, eat 500 calories during your waking hours, go to bed, get up and eat your TDEE or less – twice a week. Here is some information on TDEE: http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/tdee-for-the-curious-or-why-dont-i-lose-weight-faster/

Here are some tips for those just starting 5:2: http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/warnings-to-newbies/

    Good Luck!
