  • Hi all, I’m a 63 yr old retired Grandma from Australia. Today is my first day, & also my first ‘fast’ day for the week. I have read so many entries from the Forum. They are such a help & have given me such a positive feel about the 5:2 diet. Unfortunately I have a ruptured tendon in my ankle, so movement is out for the next 6 weeks, that is why I am so eager to start as I don’t want to become any bigger just sitting. I also have an under active Thyroid. Another reason to start. I used to have high Cholesterol, but I became Vegan 19 months ago, & now my Cholesterol is normal. My weight is my biggest fear as I get older. I’d love to know any Vegans out there with any hints for me.

I too watched last night and am starting today.
Looking forward to your posts. T

Thanks Amazonite. I’ll watch out for your Posts too.

Snap nanna! Fellow 63 year old Aussie granny. I put on the weight through injury induced immobility.
I have lost 27kg since April 13 and can now run everywhere. You can do it. Lose the weight and your body will want to move.
Join the mob on Southern Hemespherites thread. We are on and posting when others are asleep 🙂
    All the best PVE

Purple Vegie Eater you must feel fantastic. I will definitely post on Southern Hemespherites thread. That is an amazing weight loss in such a short time. I am definitely going to get results like you in the weight department & the movement. I feel so motivated thanks to you.

    Hold that thought! 🙂 P

nanna0077 sounds like we have a lot in common. I am in a cast after recently having had my first of two required operations (Achilles Tendon Reconstructions) to remove spurs on the back of both of my ankles. Like you I am concerned about putting on more weight during my confinement. I have already gained a massive 23Kg in the past 2.5 years because pain & swelling from the spurs ended my usually active lifestyle. They said it will be 6 months recovery for each of my ankles which will basically be a year on crutches, which is a real concern.
I had my right ankle done first since it will be the worst one because I can’t drive a car with my right leg in a cast, it’s illegal and voids insurance. When I get the left one done I am allowed to drive an automatic car, so at least I won’t be so confined.
I have had this cast on for 5 weeks today but it is coming off on Thursday (thank god) and will be replaced with a moon boot I think. I will still be on crutches but at least I will be able to wash my foot and lower leg!

Anyway, after learning about this diet on ‘Sunday Night’ (channel 7) last night, this is also my 1st day of this new eating programme. I loved that it is based on scientific evidence which was explained in layman’s terms. It really clicked with me because it made so much sense. I have never tried any sort of diet in my life, having never had to deal with a weight problem until a couple of years ago and hearing the bad rap diets get. I don’t really look at this as a diet, it’s more like an eating programme which I think will be totally doable.

I have decided my main diet on the initial days of fasting will be Banana’s & Eggs, well at least until my book arrives &/or I get more tips off this site. I will also have a couple of cups a tea to help with the fluid intake. I love coconut water which I think will be fine but I had better make sure first.

Purple Vegie Eater… Well done on your massive weight loss! You must feel like a whole new woman. Also, thanks for the tip on the ‘Southern Hemespherites thread’, some nights I just can’t stay asleep and find myself pacing around at 2am so it’s good to know others will be active on this site.

    Cheers 🙂

Healthy Helen, you poor thing. I have the Moon Boot on my right foot so can’t drive. Yes, we do have a lot in common, & yes, our first day. I am so impressed by Purple Vegie Eater’s success. That will be us, Healthy Helen. Looking forward to chatting with you. Good luck.

Thank you so much simcoeluv for all your info for us newbies. The more I read, the better I feel.

    Hi nanna0077

Nearly snap for me too – a 68yo Australian grandmother who gained weight due to severe knee osteoarthritis.

Still have a long way to go to achieve Purple’s magnificent result but I have found myself jogging without giving it a thought to get over the road before the lights change and the like.

Definitely look at the SH thread. As Purple says, we’re awake when the rest of the world is still sleeping.

NickyF, this is amazing. I can’t wait to be adding entries showing my weight loss. Looking forward to our chats on the SH thread.

I also live in Australia and starting today after watching the Sunday night program, it has given me motivation!!
I lost 3 kilos earlier in the year by following the diet but after a month long holiday it is all back and I have had trouble getting back to it!
I will turn 60 in November and celebrating in New York so am hoping I can lose 8 kilos in 8 weeks is that goal too much to hope for?
I had an ankle injury last year and I think that is when the weight really piled on with no exercise for a number of months so can understand why you will be worried about not being able to exercise. Looking forward to getting motivation from this forum when feeling like some chocolate on fasting days!

Syd26 what a fantastic goal you have to look forward to. This Forum is amazing, & you’re right, having someone to chat to when you’re feeling the temptation rising will be a great help.

Hi I’m a 33 year old female from NSW Australia and I too am starting my first day on the 5:2 diet. I’m having my fast days as Tuesday & Wednesday’s.
Due to my job i don’t get to be very active and I am busy a lot, I do however have a gym membership that I don’t really use (I call it gym donation as that’s what it feels like. Lol) but I’m planning on committing myself to going twice a week.
I just want to say hi to everyone and good luck to those who have just started 🙂

Hi all , like a lot of Aussies I too watched last night and start today.I am a 45 year old carrying 121kg around. I have 2 very active young boys and I am finding that I cant keep up.This I hope will be a aid in allowing me to achieve my goal and be the Dad I want to be.
My best wishes to all of you as we start this journey. May you succeed in all your goals.

Hi everyone – Just starting today after seeing TV program in Oz last night on 5:2, and trying to get up to speed with it all! I am 56yrs and been struggling to find something that I can fit in to my lifestyle to get the kg’s off! U know in Oz we use kilojoules – so there all kinds of conversions needing to be done. Would be good if kilojoules are also given in brackets besides the calories. However, I’m sure I can work it out, but might be easier for other people too! Goodluck to all the other newbies – I feel hopeful that this may have some good answers. The Yogi’s have always encouraged us to fast – so maybe they know a thing or 2!

Jamie123…. A friend of mine said one day ‘I woke up this morning, thought long and hard about going to the gym but then decided I would go tomorrow’ she sighed and then said ‘That makes it 2 years in row now that I haven’t been to gym’! lol.

nanna0077… How ironic that we have the same ankle problem on the same ankle and yes Purple Vegie Eater is definitely inspiring!

Purple Vegie Eater… You have become our Poster Girl. 🙂

Good luck with this eating programme everyone, I think we are all going to love it!

Hi Jamie123 & Kenny, well we have all started together. Looking forward to reading about our ups & downs to feel great about ourselves. Good luck to all of us.

Hi Jamie , Good luck with your challenge.
Is there a reason you can only do consecutive days?
I am restarting fasting today (after some health issues got me off track).
I found the reason I could happily fast was that I knew I ONLY had to go until the following morning before eating a nice non fast breakfast. Just a thought !!!

Also reading other posts about Monday fasting,I personally found Mondays hard.
Think it was because generally my dining out days etc are on week ends and I would wake up really hungry on the Monday because my stomach had been used to more food over w.e. I found the immediate reduction to 500 cals on the Monday a bit much.
    Tuesdays and Thursdays for me!!!

Hi fat2slim, I registered on a site myfitnesspal.com for the 2 fast days. I look up any food or drink, add the portion size & it adds it to your day in calories, but I just find it easy to tally up the 500 calories needed on the fast days. Maybe this will help you, or maybe we, as newbies, will receive better suggestions from the Forum. Good luck.

Hey great to hear your starting on this new way of life.

I caught Michael’s program about 4-5 weeks ago and thought let’s give it a go.
In that time I have lost approx 2.5 kilo and amazed how easy it has become to dedicate two days to not eating. Don’t be too concerned about the lack of exercise I’m in my late 50’s with little or no exercise.

    Good luck

Yes Healthy Helen, it is amazing about same ankle etc. Here’s hoping we do as well as Purple Vegie Eater.

HeyMeToo thanks for the boost regarding the lack of exercise. It is a worry, but by all the Success Stories with the 5:2 is not a problem.

Hi all, I’m another aussie jumping on the bandwagon after watching the segment on “Sunday Night” last night! I have a good friend who has been doing The Fast Diet for quite a few months now, and it is really working for her. I have generally been losing a bit of weight over the past few months due primarily to being too busy to find the time to eat. But after recently purchasing a Thermomix, I’m finding the weight is creeping on due to all the yummy things I’m creating. I’m a huge foodie – love to cook for my family and friends, love to bake, and really enjoy creating good food from scratch. That’s what makes this ‘diet’ seem achievable to me – I can still do all that 5 days a week. And I’m sure I can get creative about this 500 calorie business!

I’m 40, and a mum to 2 boys. I’m looking forward to sharing this journey with the other supportive newbies on here- good luck to everyone!

Yes kinash, I think a lot of Aussies are jumping on the bandwagon after last night’s show. We should all do well.

Just in case anyone wants to watch the report again from last nights ‘Sunday Night’ programme on Channel 7, here is the link… https://au.news.yahoo.com/sunday-night/video/watch/24988941/the-5-2-diet-why-it-works/

Also, I have just been typing into Google… how many calories in a egg … or replace egg with orange, banana etc. and it comes straight up with a calorie counter which I find really useful.

Very excited and now on lookout for calorie counter..

Hi kinash. I also have a Thermomix, isn’t it a fantastic machine! Check out this site for some amazing low calorie recipes…. http://www.everyrecipe.com.au/s/low-calorie-thermomix.html

It’s great that 15 mins of a tv program can motivate so many of us to not only lose weight but also improve our health… It makes sense that the body has to benefit from being given a break from having to process all the preservatives and toxins that so many of us eat every day!
It’s great to hear all the positive stories!
Off to play golf now and try not to think about food

I am a 71 old male and just joined 5/2 fast diet I do exercise riding my bike a little Strida folding whenever I can I consider myself fit and healthy and don’t think I need to loose much in KG but a diet fasting and eating sensibly to keep your body longer in repair mode and lower all health risk factors sounds perfect for me.

I am probably one of the few Australian who has joined up today who did not watch the show last night – wish I had though.
I have know about 5:2 for a long time – my Mum has been doing it for a couple of years and most of that time has been on the maintenance, only doing one fast day a week.
I have finally bit the bullet and decided to start today.
I have to tell you I am feeling quite hungry, but also comforted in the knowledge that eventually I will adjust.
Overall I have about 40kg’s to loose, but are going to concentrate at 5 kg’s at a time – bite sized goals work better for me.

LyndieLouie … you can watch the ‘Sunday Night’ segment here…. https://au.news.yahoo.com/sunday-night/video/watch/24988941/the-5-2-diet-why-it-works/

Thanks nanna0077… Our trip away is a great motivation as well as turning 60! I was always slim till about 37 and slowly started adding a kilo every year… That started a roundabout of losing weight for holidays then putting it back on with too much lovely food and wine!!
8 kilos doesn’t sound a lot but so difficult to get rid of it at this age. As I am sure a lot of us older group can identify with!

Hi Everyone! I’m 31 from Sydney and today is my first “fast day” on the 5:2 diet. I’m really excited as over the years I’ve put on some weight that’s moved to stubborn areas and even with eating right it just won’t seem to budge. I’m hoping by doing the 5:2 combined with exercise I see some good results! Goodluck everyone 🙂

Hi everyone, I am a 29yr old teacher in Victoria struggling with my weight for the last year. I have rocketed to 93kg – up from 70 at the start of last year eeeek. I was meant to start last week as a mate is enjoying the results of the diet so much so last night seeing the diet on channel 7 was the kick up the bottom that I needed to get started and maybe even use the gym membership I have had for a while gathering dust. Looking forward to checking in to see everyone’s results and hopefully sharing positive ones from myself. 😀 good luck everyone!

Thanks HealthyHelen – that will be really useful! Tried having a quick look now but I’m too hungry to look at recipes! Will wait till a non-fast day to check it out and then plan…

Wow I’m not the only Aussie here. This is my first day!! I am 40 yr old veggie from Perth. Watched the show and I’m starting the fast today. But I had a cheeky coffee earlier

I just went over by 122 calories. Little disappointed in myself but I’m just going to try harder tomorrow! No more coffee in the morning as that’s what sent me over. Has anyone else gone over?

Yet another Aussie here. Also watched last night and today is day 1. Tomorrow is fast 1, am a bit nervous as I love my food – hence my weight gain over the last few years helped along by a very sedentary job, 12hrs a day sitting infront of a computer. Four years ago I weighed in at 65kg and today I am 97kg!!! Can’t even look in the mirror let alone feel comfortable about going out in PUBLIC!! I am 41 so I should be out living it up I feel, this is the start of a new me. Everyone on here is so inspirational with some amazing losses. My goal is to lose 20kg before Christmas…….watch this space 🙂

Syd26 hi that’s exactly how I felt. 15 min tv show got me wondering and excited at the same time that I need to get more focused. I am 40 and since last two yrs I started putting weight which I only realised recently that some of my clothes don’t fit right. That’s when it hit home. The show on this diet came at the right time for me. I’ve put on 7kg in the last 2yrs. It needs to go. I love this forum and it is so motivating that there are so many of us encouraging each other without realising..

We all doing this together BecDay!
We will have so much fun doing this.

I have been doing 5:2 for about a month now after seeing Dr Michael Mosley’s doco on SBS (much more informative than the Today Tonight one last night by the way, I recommend trying to get a copy of it.
So far I have had good results, increased energy, sleeping better, lost a few kilos but most importantly by tracking my calories and being accountable for what I am eating I have managed to stop my mid week wine habit, 1 or 2 glasses every day. I starting this bad habit when I had kids!!!!!
So I have some tips for anyone starting.
Get the MyFitnessPal app, it is free and will tell you how many calories in everything – you can even scan barcodes of food so you know exactly what you are eating. It is a very good food diary and it will email you food and exercise advice. It makes 5:2 really easy to do. You will learn which foods are better choices for calorie intake (lots of greens) and which are empty calories (sugary foods/snack foods).
Make sure you have a set of digital kitchen scales then you can weigh everything the first time you do it and get to know the portion sizes appropriate to you.
As a result of the fast days you will see how simple it is to restrict your calories and stop you overeating on normal eating days helping you get the most out of the lifestyle change.
Good luck and good health to you all. x

Thanks for the link Healthy Helen. Going to have a looksie now :).

Are there any other early 30’s females in Asutralia looking to drop 15ish kilo’s in this space? These are my stats and I was hoping that if there was another one of me I’d love to stay in loose contact on here with updates, tips etc more specific to me. Not that I am not loving everyones updates I would just really appreciate someone more specific to my goals that would be interested in a bit of extra support. I’m a teacher who will prob only check in every few days or twice a week maybe at the beginning then see how it goes after that. Anyway if you are keen please get onto me. I may start a new thread?

    Hi

I am not in Australia (waaah!) I am 35 and I would like to lose about 12-15kg’s I am not going to be here all the time.

Today is my first day I have taken my measurements and am going to go by the tape measure as much as the scales possibly more.

I have lost weight with this approach before and I am really excited to be starting. I am a vegan and am into crossfit

All the best please start a thread as i don’t know how too.

Hi everyone. I didn’t get a chance to watch this episode on 5:2 the other night, but everyone is talking about it. Just having a look at this forum, I notice you are all giving it a go, but I need help with starting as I really need to lose a fair bit of weight. Can someone help me as to what I need to do, or do I have to buy the 5:2 book to be able to follow some sort of planner as to what to eat each day. Can anyone give me some ideas what I need to do. Waiting in anticipation, thank you

    Hi Kathy:

See my post above. It has all you need to know to get started.

    Good Luck!

So is there a bit of an example of what I can eat on the 2 total fast days. And so then if I’m correct, for the remaining 5, I have to eat small but healthy meals. On reading some of the posts a lot of people say that all they have is water, black tea, and a cuppa soup, but don’t seem to mention how much on the total fasting days. So is there something that shows me what to eat for the total fasting days and then an example of what to eat for the other 5 days. Nobody really seems to say what their eating, like its some sort of a secret. I literally just don’t understand what to eat for either fasts. I’m hoping someone might show me a rough example of what to eat and how much
