  • Hi everyone I am new to this forum and just signed up yesterday, I’m a 48 year old male from the panhandle of Florida in the USA. Last year at this time I was breaching 600 pounds and my weight was causing me all kinds of problems, walking from one end of the house to the other was a struggle and I could barely drive. I lost my job as an IT professional in 2012 because my bosses didn’t like me because of my weight, and have been unable to find a new job since. At the beginning of 2013 I decided enough was enough and got myself a doctor quality scale and decided my weight was going down hell or high water, I lost about forty pounds on my own just cutting out the big evils such as fast food, soda, pizza, alcohol, etc. Had some health issues that landed me in the hospital, and after recovery was beginning the diet again when around the end of July I saw Dr. Mosley’s fasting documentary on PBS, and it really lit a fire under me. I was looking for a solution that would work for me, and this seemed like the perfect plan as it was so simple in its design. Within a week of viewing the program I tried my first fast, and it wasn’t as horrific as I anticipated. So I kept at it over the next few weeks and once I got a good routine down I lost almost 30 pounds rather quickly, then right at the beginning of October I was struck down with Shingles and I decided to lay off while I recovered from that. I gained back some of what I lost over the holidays but as of this week I am starting the fast diet again, I fasted on Monday and planning to do the next one Saturday. I have a new resolve to make it make this weight loss work this time, I already feel so much better from what I have lost already. I’m determined that I will never to back to the 600 pounds that I weighed a year ago, I began a blog last year that I will be documenting my progress throughout the year on. I also plan to write a bunch on this forum to learn from ya’ll and also share what I learned from my previous attempt, I found the fast diet was almost magical in how it helped curve my hunger cravings before and that is what most of us morbidly obese people really struggle with. Sorry for writing a mini novel but I look forward to interacting with everyone here over the next several months!

hi Dethrock and welcome to the forum!

wishing you all the best on 5.2, keep at it, and let us know how you are getting on!

    good luck 🙂

    Hi Dethrock!

I just want you to know that I sit here in Norway reading what you call your mini novel and cheer you on! I am convinced that you will be able to win this battle. The first thing is resolve, and the decision to go for the 5:2. You have done this and that´s great! I look forward to hearing how you progress, as I am sure you will.

    The best of luck! Kalle

Hi Dethrock, I’m in the UK cheering you on, I only started 5:2 on Wednesday so have only had 1 fast day so far but for me I’m already feeling good about the 5:2 way of life. I also find it really encouraging knowing there’s people all over the world who can help with any queries and also to help keep us motivated. I look forward to hearing all about your journey xx

Hi Dethrock – well done for losing the weight you have so far – and pleased to hear that your Shingles is clearing up. My 94 year old grandma-in-law had it over Xmas and it was horrific!

You sound really motivated – I think once you realise that getting through a fast day is possible (without being lightheaded or passing out as people would have you believe) and you see the weight reducing then you feel back in control and start to believe that this time you can do it and that you will reach your target.

I wish you every success and look forward to seeing your updates. There are a lot of lovely supportive people on this forum as you will discover – so any time you need to ask questions, have a moan or just a chat this is a great place to come.

Thanks for the encouragement ya’ll, its funny I’ve only had one fast day so far but I can already feel the effects. Went out for seafood today with my dad and got my usual shrimp, fries, and grits (I am from the south ya know) and I could barely finish them. This was the biggest benefit of doing the fast diet before I discovered, after a few weeks I could only eat so much on my normal feasting days. During my hiatus from the plan I fell back into my old habits of tearing through 25 chicken wings and a 2-liter of soda in one sitting, when I quit the plan I could only do 10 wings in one sitting. Looking forward to getting back to lifestyle again, also going to beef up the exercise this time around. Before I was really only doing it half assed which I believe limited my progress, I’m also job hunting as we speak looking for work as a web developer and sysadmin. Not many places are open to hiring fat people so its been hard, but I’m getting interviews so hoping something happens soon!

I’ve had a rough start to the fasting, I’m now two weeks into it and I’ve only done a total of three fasting days, I’ve not lost one single pound. However I can tell I’ve lost some fat around my belly because its definitely looser, so I’m not sure what the deal is. My appetite is definitely changing as I am craving less, my biggest crutch is drinking sweet tea which might as well be heroin to me. But I found out my local wing place where I intent to hit on my weekly cheat serves Coke Zero, so I think that should help me. Next Sunday is the Superbowl which I have to watch with my friends and there will be a feast, but after that the race is on to get rid of this weight. I also have two job interviews this week that I hope turn into something because my savings is almost depleted and I gotta find a new income very soon.

How are you getting on Dethrock?

Had some frustration in getting the things going, since I started I’ve only been able to do one fasting day per week and no change in weight. Then I gained a little over superbowl weekend, however this week got really serious about the plan and fasted for two days and kept my calories under 2000 on the others and I lost 4 pounds in four days. So hope things will change from here.

    Hi and welcome:

Here are some tips that might help: http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/warnings-to-newbies/

    Good Luck!

    Hi dethrock,

I’ve not been on the forum for a few days so I’ve only just caught up with you. Just want to add my good wishes to everyone else’s.

As for shingles – tell me about it! For me, shingles also meant steroids which don’t help weight problems one bit – especially when the doc keeps you on them for 2 1/2 years, “just in case”. Once I came off them I dropped 7 or so pounds without even trying. It hasn’t been so easy since then, but I’m hanging on in there.

You’ll have seen already, this forum is a good place to come for support and encouragement. It can also be a lot of fun.

Good luck with the job search. We’ll be rooting for you.
