  • Hi everyone,

I’m now on my 3rd week of 5:2 & I’m finding it relatively easy at present!
I’ve just got a few questions that I’d like to ask. My fast days aren’t the same every week due to working shifts – does that make too much of a difference?
Also, been sticking to ready meals for dinner so I know exactly what’s in it but does it matter about the protein, carb fat ratio on fast days? Also been allowing myself a coffee & biscuit in the afternoon to help with the hunger pangs, still sticking to 500cals or below though!
I’ve lost 5lbs in the last 2weeks (4lbs in week 1 & 1lb in week 2) which I am delighted with but just hoping my losses aren’t slowing down already as I’ve got another 4st to lose!
Any advice would be gratefully received! 🙂

Hi Nicola I think you are doing well, I have only been doing it myself about 5 weeks, I sometimes have coffee/ cappuccino in the day and sometimes I will have a tangerine or two still keep within 500 or as near as possible. When I get up in the mornings and I feel like doing a fasting day I do it but I always fast on a Monday because I still go to Weight Watchers very Tuesday morning. I lost 56 lbs in seventeen months with them and I have kept 50 of them off for nearly 3 years but it is hard and that is why this 5-2 appealed to me. I lost 3 lbs in the first 4 days but nothing for a week or two but another pound this week. So I am sticking with it. have you looked at other posts on here, Jojo58’s thread about losing 2 lb a week might be of interest to you. Good luck and happy casing.

It’s common to lose a fair bit right off the bat and then slow down. Could just be ‘water weight’ could be a combination of a million other things. The main thing is not to freak out too much about weight. As long as you are consistantly losing something then that’s good and 1lb a week is excellent (as a long termer I can only vaguely remember and faintly dream of 1lb per week now).

In answer to your question Nicola – you can eat whatever you like on a fastday as long as it fits within your calorie allowance (same on non-fastdays) but I wouldn’t recommend just chocolate as 500kcal of it is not very satisfying as your only meal of the day 😉 Lots of people experiment with different ways of carving up their nutrients on fastdays to help cope with hunger or to optimise their nutrition or whatever their goal is but it doesn’t really matter. Eat whatever works for you. Just do be aware (as I was not until recently) that those pre-packed meals are apparently allowed quite a substantial percentage margin of error on their nutritional information numbers (#scary).

    Hi, Nicola

I am planning on switching up my fast days, I see it as a good thing as I’m keeping my metabolism even more on its toes! But I guess the answer to that one lies in the results, if it’s working, great!

My opinion on food is clean eating is the ideal for every day,but this is not always an achievable goal. But I do think eating unprocessed food, and particularly watching your sugar intake in general is going to lead to a healthier you.
Fast days can be hard, and if you eat processed food with additives and sugar, it can cause spikes in your energy levels, making it easier to succumb to a binge to boost your energy back up, headaches and even increased dehydration (never good) and I think, if you’re fasting and you eat something that converts to energy quickly (processed food tends to because it has higher carb/sugar levels) you’ll feel hungrier than if you eat a slow burning natural high-protein food (lean meat, fish, nuts etc).

I think for those reasons, I usually pick a high protein meal for my fast days with veg/fruit and minimal carbs as even wholemeal stuff has too much sugar in them these days!!

Sorry for the long reply, I’m a bit of a nutrition nerd and like to read up on food and it’s effect on the body!

    Jo X
