  • Sorry to hear that Happy. Nurture yourself 😊
Thanks, Amazon. That’s what I like about Hugh. He doesn’t use ridiculous, unattainable ingredients, yet does some really interesting combos. Obviously this book is a result of his embracing 5:2.πŸ˜‰ P

On the subject of 5:2, I see MM is launching a new 5:2 and diet approach

    https://thefast800.com

And featured in the Daily Mail

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-6558957/amp/His-5-2-diet-revolution-DR-MOSLEYS-new-Fast-800-plan-easier-quicker.html

Apologies if someone has mentioned this already! I’m a bit dopey and slow at the moment…

I started looking at it…and got distracted πŸ˜‘πŸ˜ΆπŸ™„

Perth is on our to-do list. I can see I will have to seek tourist activities and sites from you folk when the time comes.

I have just read the first bit of Fast 800 (couldn’t get all of it downloaded). Strange that Mosley still doesn’t acknowledge the importance of insulin in all the metabolic diseases, including obesity. And I think he was not a very good guinea pig, having just fattened up quickly to start off.

I was up in the night, first with constipation then with the other extreme. Not sure what the cause would be, unless it was all the pork fat with yesterday’s lunch.

    Get better quickly, Happy.

    Morning/evening all,

Mosely did a Q&A on twitter yesterday and he talked about metabolic syndrome and he mentioned that a build up of fat in the liver and pancreas leads to T2 diabetes.

It was interesting to follow the discussion, and I was impressed with the way he dismissed the naysayers and the myths by stating the facts and pointing to the evidence to support them.

    Happy,

I hope you feel better soon. I managed to escape the Christmas cold virus for the first time in three years but I doubt I’ll get through the winter without succumbing.

    Purple,

I also have Three Good Things and Veg. I’ve used Veg the most out of the 3 but that’s because I also bought all 3 Anna Jones books and that is a lot of recipes.
I think Hugh’s summer of eating vegetarian food made a huge difference to the way he views putting a meal together and his recipe creating. 5:2 would have also influenced his thinking as he would have wanted to make every small dish full of flavour and goodnessto aid compliance.

I’m toying with trying to make February a vegan month simply to try out different recipes and foods and to train myself to be able to tolerate black tea and coffee in anticipation of calorie free FDs. I have a wealth of recipes to try many of which make my mouth water by just reading them πŸ˜€

Have a good one everybody 😜

We both changed to black coffee back in the 70s, when we’d go camping, and it was easier to not have to carry milk.
Start with very weak coffee. I still request single shot coffee. πŸ˜‰ P

    Morning/evening all,

    Purple,

I occasionally drink espresso and enjoy it but I find it hard to drink black coffee earlier in the day. Black tea is more difficult as my two mugs of morning brew each with a splash of milk are what get me awake and moving.

Second FD of the week. Let’s hop I can stick to it 😬

I’m going to the cinema this afternoon to see The Favourite.

    Where is RT?

Have a good one everybody 😜

    Amazon,

The Favourite looks great, definitely one I’d like to see…I’ll have to see if I can persuade OH this weekend. Perhaps tell him it’s an action movie 😁

My cold hasn’t really progressed into anything major, despite threatening for days. So no sympathy needed after all!

I fasted yesterday. Today I ate breakfast and lunch, but nothing this evening as I’m back late from a Pilates class. If I manage to sleep ok on an empty stomach I might repeat it again next week. I’ve got to make a serious effort. I still can’t believe I managed to gain 2kg over Xmas!

I really enjoyed the film which was a rather interesting take on relationships in Queen Anne’s court.

I loved the costumes and it was filmed at Hampton Court Palace which is a beautiful place, and somewhere I’m very familiar with.

There are quite a few interesting looking films about to be released in the next two or three weeks, Collette, Mary Queen of Scots and A Private War which is about the murdered journalist Marie Colvin and one or two others that have caught my eye.

I may be spending a few afternoons at the cinema…..

I can’t get past the trailer that has Mary Queen of Scots with red hair (she was dark) and a Scottish accent (she grew up in the French court and would definitely have had a French accent.)
Stormboy is on my list. P

Funnily enough I’ve just seen a trailer for Collette, definitely another one on my wish list now.

I must admit I do love a good period costume drama, and The Favourite looks suitable quirky with it. I really will have to prise myself from the fireside one evening and go to the cinema…with or without OH!

Amazon, I went cold turkey without the morning white coffee in bed in 2013 when we began 5:2. I always thought I needed it to wake up. Turns out it was pure habit. 😐
I guess RT is off on his Xmas holiday. P

When I’m on holiday I have to drink what is available and many places around the world don’t have fresh milk, so I can and do drink tea and coffee without it, but I prefer both with milk.
I don’t want to give it up permanently but would like to get into the habit of calorie free FDs and I’m sure I’ll cope.

Mary Queen of Scots with flaming hair and a Scottish accent is artistic licence of which there is plenty employed in The Favourite……

I just realised why I have up my coffee in bed…It would make my first thing in the morning weight heavier! I took up just getting up! P

    Morning/evening all,

We had frost overnight and it is a chilly and grey morning here in London.

I’m fasting today as we went out for something to eat after the cinema yesterday.

Another of Hugh’s recipes will be tested today πŸ˜€

Have a good one everybody 😜

Hi Fast Trackers And Hello World (You All know Who You ARE) πŸ˜‰
With the youngest son now gainfully employed in the workforce at the processing plant where I work and 2 of his brothers and getting over the afterglow of his first ever pay slip of $866.00 net wow wee he was indeed super excited to say the least πŸ˜† we have been on leave in the caravan with the family hound (ollie) and really have been focussing on re -establishing our relationship as Husband and Wife not Mum and Dad a very weird concept after so many years… πŸ˜† my philosophy of eat less fast more has been side tracked before Christmas but I have now wrestled the control back after the new year.
    Eat Fast and Live Longer
    Peace RT

Hi Fast Trackers and Hello World (You All know Who You ARE) πŸ˜‰
A group of guys, all turning 40, discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at Speights in Blenheim because the waitresses had big breasts and wore mini-skirts.
Ten years later, at age 50, the friends once again discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at Speights in Blenheim because the waitresses were attractive, the food and service were good and the beer selection was excellent.
Ten years later, at age 60, the friends again discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at Speights in Blenheim because there was plenty of parking, they could dine in peace and quiet with no loud music, and it was good value for money.
Ten years later, at age 70, the friends discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at Speights in Blenheim because the restaurant was wheelchair accessible and had a toilet for the disabled.
Ten years later, at age 80, the friends discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at Speights in Blenheim because they had never been there before.

Have A Happy Weekend All You beautiful Losers πŸ˜†
    Peace

    RT,

    🀣🀣🀣

You’ve cheered me up on a dull, damp, cold morning with bad news all the way in in the headlines. especially the tennis news 😭
Poor Andy ☹ Not exactly a surprise but still very sad and disappointing.

I have friends whose youngest left home a couple of months ago so it’s just them and the dog. It must be really odd after so many years of bringing up a family and then having to readjust everything once the last one gains independence.

I’m trying very hard to wrestle back control after the festive season but at present it’s one step forward and two steps back. I’ve been here before and I know I shall find a way to get over this setback but nonetheless it’s very irritating and frustrating.

Have a good weekend everybody 😜

RT πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ€£πŸ€£ Great to have you back.
Amazon…I thought of you as I watched the great Andy on the news tonight. πŸ˜‘

    Hi Purple,

We all knew it was coming and it is so sad that Andy can’t retire on his own terms from competing in a sport he loves and excels at. It has been his life for as long as he can remember and he’s not ready to give up as there is so much more he wants to achieve but his body has had enough.

I’m reading Michael’s new book. This quote reflects what I realised, back in 2013, when we both lost so much weight quickly:
Professor Mike Lean (great name!) Glasgow Uni “Losing weight slowly is torture. The people who do it rapidly see better results in the long run. Contrary to the belief of dieticians, people who lose weight more quickly, more emphatically, are more likely to keep it off on the long run. ”
    Food for thought.

The last thing I read, at 10:15pm last night, in Fast800 was about insomnia and it’s effect on blood sugars and weight. I then lay awake until 2:30am!!! What was that about?? Thanks Michael!!!πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ˜ΆP

    Hi Everybody,

Stayed in my daughter’s new ground floor maisonette last night. My other half was deeply concerned that the bedroom was only 10 feet from a sheer drop of indeterminate height and situated near a fault line. Great views though and lots of bird wildlife nearby.

Just arrived in Taupo (Home to a lake bigger than Singapore – not sure if that is true but I should find out tonight) and planning a sunset boat trip. It’s a bit cloudy here so not sure what we will get tonight.

Tomorrow my daughter is doing a bungee jump and some other death defying activity I prefer not to think about. She is very excited about getting her pilot membership card and looking forward to more lessons. She has done several take off’s now but no landings yet which is a bit of a worry.

We are touring the North Island and we have lots of sightseeing plans including seeing the Glowworm Caves tomorrow.

I have mostly eaten squid with salad plus halloumi salads on the self catering events. Avoiding all the cakes on offer at coffee stops so hopefully not gaining any weight.

Hope Everyone is well and happy

Welcome to Wellington, Jo, where you are always very close to a faultline! What suburb is your daughter’s flat in? Also, beware of Taupo, which is the reminder of probably the greatest volcanic eruption in pre-history, identified via geological research.

We are now home to receive visitors. Back to work next week, have taken this coming week off to host our grandson who returned from the Gold Coast with us. And I am relishing the time off, I can see retirement beaconing strongly! But no doubt if I was filling seven days with gardening, learning, socialising etc I would find I missed the challenge of work. Down to three days a week this year, but probably not until May πŸ™

I understand that weight and sleep are connected, P, in the great hormone swamp that is our body.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend, everyone. I think there might be a bit of tennis to watch from tomorrow.

Have just come across this, and must share…

A German Shepherd, Doberman and a cat have died. All three are faced with God, who wants to know what they believe in.

The German shepherd says, β€œI believe in discipline training and loyalty to my master.”

β€œGood,” says God. β€œThen sit down on my right side. Doberman, what do you believe in?”

The Doberman answers, β€œI believe in the love, care and protection of my master.”

β€œAh, yes,” said God. β€œYou may sit to my left.”

Then he looks at the cat and asks, β€œAnd what do you believe in?”

The cat answers, β€œI believe you’re sitting in my seat.”

    πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚B
Jo, we found the Craters of the Moon, right near Lake Taupo fascinating. So much evidence of volcanic activity!
I’m glad my daughter isn t as bold as yours. I’d be worried sick 😏

    Morning/evening all,

    Barata,

there’s been tennis to watch for the past two weeks in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney, Auckland and Hobart……… πŸ™‚

It’s a mild and sunny morning here in London.

I bought the fast800 book and read it yesterday. It’s good to see how Michael has developed the fasting plan to incorporate new scientific evidence and make it easier for those who have problems sticking to 500/600 calories with different options depending on the individual.

Not that I need a recipe but I have the same issue with this book as the 5:2, what does a tablespoon of oats/rice/lentils mean? Bearing in mind the book is aimed at those who habitually eat too much and are prone to piling plates high, they need to give a weight value or people will be eating twice as many calories and wondering why it isn’t working….

I’ve decided a different approach is needed so I’m going to try 800 calories and 16:8 every day for a couple of weeks.

    Watch this space.

Have a good one everybody 😜

    Good evening all,
Well that was a very pleasant boat trip albeit cloudy and 15 minutes of rain on return journey. Nice free glass of red wine on the trip so I indulged. We saw the Maori carvings in the cliff face, these were done in the 80’s but really good. Took three artists three summers to complete traditional carvings.

Not sure about tomorrow’s plans yet but moving on.
Already missing the lovely climate of Perth.

    Barata
My daughter lives in Kingston, Wellington, up a really steep hill. Loved the joke, my other half said the cat part would also apply to women, how rude!

    Amazon
I was tempted to buy MM new book but very expensive at airport so I will get it at home. Good luck with the revised plan. I assume most people have spoon measuring implements to use for Michael’s Recipe Book. I have cup measures too and several measuring jugs of various sizes. Most dieters will have measuring aids.

Still no baby yet for my son and his girlfriend and she is having very poor sleep at night. I sympathise as I am in the same situation, my hip was agony last night. Hot water bottle and pills had no effect at all. At least I slept on the journey here as not needed to drive. Fingers crossed that we both have a better night tonight.

    Goodnight all

Purple – 1800 years ago, last volcanic eruption which created this lake. Scary business.

Yes Jo. I know Taupo well. The moonscape with steam rising at the Craters of the Moon (not commercial…run by volunteers) is fantastic evidence of how close to the surface that activity still is. Well worth a visit!
First babies are usually 2 weeks overdue! Don’t hold your breathe! πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰

    PVE
I will check out craters tomorrow if I get the chance.

I had both my babies three weeks early, I wouldn’t wish a late delivery on her she has been very uncomfortable since early December.

When I checked statistics it said most first babies are within one week of due date.

    Just need to be patient.
Great to hear and see photos of developments at their house though, especially as it doesn’t involve us now. Only 2 weeks to carpets stage. There was the last minute removal of a chimney which was making two walls damp. Three attempts to seal it failed so removal was necessary. It has held up renovation.

    Jo,

The Kindle version is less than Β£4 and as it is a very short book half of which is recipes I won’t use, and also has a lot of information I already knew, I wouldn’t have wanted to pay any more for it. However, it has given me some much needed inspiration to try something different that requires thinking slightly differently about what and when I eat and I’m hoping it’s the key to finally reaching goal which is now covered in cobwebs with a creaking post πŸ˜†

I did a 7 day meal plan last night so went out this morning for a few essentials.

I had some yoghurt for brunch, only half of a small pot which was left over from starting a new batch of homemade which won’t be ready until this evening.

I’m having roast veggies including roasted red cabbage for my Sunday dinner.
There was a vegan recipe for dhal topped with roasted red cabbage in yesterday’s newspaper food supplement plus a recipe which included griddled and roasted Savoy/Hispi cabbage, both of which gave me ideas.

I’ve already made a batch of tomato dhal which is based on HF-W’s recipe but has more spices added and tomorrow I’m going to make a cauliflower curry which usually includes a can of coconut milk. I’ve decided to use a small sachet of coconut cream to keep the calories down and add some leftover tofu which will melt into the sauce.

I’m considering having a theme every week eg if this week is Indian, next week might be Greek or Spanish or Mexican and batch cooking two or three dishes that can be mixed and matched leaving enough calories for a few steamed greens every day.

If it works I might make my fame and fortune by writing a recipe book πŸ˜‰

Maybe I’ll open a cookery school for fasters……

    Is that an oxymoron πŸ€”

Good idea Amazon. I had considered it too.
It’s so simple to make fabulous healthy home cooked food, and yet so few people do it. P

Jo, length of pregnancies is also depend on medical intervention, which sadly is far too frequent these days. Babies need to “stay inside” until they are ready.

“FirstΒ time mums, if left alone toΒ goΒ into labor naturally tend to beΒ pregnantΒ for about 41 weeks and 1 day. Women who’ve hadΒ babies before tend to deliver around 40 weeks and 3 days.”

Being ‘uncomfortable’ when heavily pregnant is par for the course. All natural.
Maybe the bub is waiting for grandma to come home πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰πŸ˜Š

    Hi Fasters
    Welcome to Aoteroa, Jojo.
I am in Wellington. So maybe we can meet up when you are here again.
Barata, any time for Z-ing this week?
Maybe you have been saved from the Bunjee jump by the bad weather.

Good advice about babies from Purple. At least it is not 40Β°C in the UK.

Fasting is not going well for me at present. However I went to the market yesterday and I have everything I need for a vege loaded eating regime again. I will buy the new MM book and get reformatted.

I never knew I would miss my OH so much and I really shouldn’t admit it, should I?
He can’t come into the country while his resident’s visa is being processed.
He will be going back to France next week from Italy and the snow build up will be a problem. I can imagine him pulling his 2 roller cases up the snowy road for 3 kilometres through the snow and 250m of altitude! At least the locals will have theories about the two sets of parallel lines, that will keep them occupied!

In Wellington, as long as your house is bolted to the rock, it’s probably ok. As Barata says, there are lots of faults through Wellington, I think there are 9 major faults known about, including the one through Happy Valley not far from Kingston, a suburb I don’t know, though situated in my head near Brooklyn. The last 6 earthquakes have put the land up about 18m. The hill suburbs are relatively safe, it’s the low lying places which are not so good.
So OH can sleep relatively safely. We are a bit overdue for a major earthquake, but c’est la vie. NZ’s nickname is the Shaky Iles, like Japan.

    Happy Fasting.
    xx Wiwi

Oui, Wi! C’est la vie! πŸ˜‰

    Comme tu l’as dit
    Ma chère amie,
    Oui, c’est la vie

I’m happy to Z any time, Wi. OH can grandson-sit, as the youngster prefers to stay at home rather than go out. How does Wednesday afternoon (or lunch?) suit?

We have the tilers at work at the front entrance, laying new ones inside and outside, this week. It has only taken since August to get this underway! Then we can carpet the house and relax for a while.

Apparently it’s no just the faults lying under Wellington, but also the vast Hikurangi subduction zone off the east coast where the Australian and Pacific plates meet that threatens our stability. At least we are on rock on this side of the road. πŸ™‚

When we moved back to Welly in 2003 we rented in Kingston, Jo, so I know the area well. The house we lived in in Priscilla Crescent was next to the two that have been abandoned because of the subsidence a couple of years ago; our no.39 has since been demolished as an uninhabitable risk.

The only tennis we could get free-to-air where we were staying, Amazon, was a bit from Sydney. Off to take a look at the AO now.

    Morning/evening all,

    I’m up watching tennis.
Only one shock exit so far.

Day 2 of fast800 for me and I have to say that yesterday was easy. I’m guessing that’s because I’ve been doing 5:2 on and off for so long and that a few weeks in it might not be such plain sailing especially in light of the fact that I’m going alcohol free for the time being so I can use all my calories for food.

Having said that, it’s my birthday in a couple of weeks so I’ll be taking a day off.

    Barata and Wiwi,

If I leave now I could join you for lunch on Wednesday but I might fall asleep with my face in my food πŸ˜‰

Have a good one everybody 😜

A fine image! A stone sober, jet lagged Amazon with her face planted in a face full of 800 calories of food in Wellington!

I am sure we could find some little sugary delight which could you your 800 calories in one go. We could wait for you to arrive, Amazon.

Barata, I am not sure your horror story about houses in Kingston falling into a precipice will help Jojo’s OH to sleep better.

Here is is like Wuthering Heights this evening.

    🀣🀣🀣

These days I’m very well behaved in public πŸ˜‰

I usually only drink alcohol at the weekend or if I’m out for dinner during the week so it’s not a tough ask especially as I won’t be eating out for a while unless it’s a special occasion/

Me, I’m a happy girl, having just finished my fast day meal (salmon, salad and water) Mmmmm…

Right, that’s enough AO for tonight – bedtime! If you set out now, Amazon, you would be in a better time zone to watch tennis πŸ™‚ and join us for lunch. Wednesday okay, Wiwi? I see what you mean about falling houses being of comfort! Hang onto your hat in the “breeze” – OH has put on the central heating πŸ™

Bbq steak and salad for today’s FD, P.

Certainly been far easier to fast in the middle of a heat wave topped 41 here yesterday i have only just been adding a pinch of Himalaya Pink Salt to my water and i loved it it creates all kinds of mouth sensations just lovely. The good Dr seems to have a new publications out each year the 800 calorie does look and sound like an updated version of the BSB which also quotes the same calorie requirement I have not bought the book but if you can attract a new audience with a new book to the healthy fasting way of life then that can only be a good thing.

RT, I haven’t found much take away in the new book, but, as you say, it may attract new people to this wol. All good.
My friend freezes lightly salted water as iceblocks, to suck on when hot and fasting. Salt is definitely needed in our heat waves. Keep cool mate. P

Day 2 almost over and I have to say it doesn’t feel like fasting at all in comparison to eating 500 calories, and it’ll be interesting to see how I feel after 7 days.

The tomato dhal and cauliflower and tofu curry worked well together and and having 50% more calories on my plate is good.

The biggest plus so far is not getting cold and as it’s nearer to 4 than 41 I’m very grateful.

I’ve bought some sachets of instant miso for when I need salt. I’ve found a variety that make different flavours and the one I’ve bought is so good I’ll definitely be trying the others.

Miso is my go to on cold winter fast days around 4pm.
Non fast heatwave developing here. Plenty of bubbly and homemade crushed frozen strawberry syrup ready for sipping in the pool. One must keep hydrated πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰

    Hello All,
Now in Coromandel after a very long car trip yesterday. We started the day watching my daughter do a Swing and bungy (only 47 metres high) but in heavy rain. Then we went to the Glowworm Caves, moon Crators and Huka Falls. All incredible places to visit. Sadly we then got a puncture in a rear tyre and had to swap it for the emergency tyre. My daughter had never changed a tyre in her 14 years of driving which astounded me. So she got a lesson while Tony and I did the dirty work. During the process I was stung by insects several times on my feet and ankles which made the next few hours irritating. With an 80 kph speed limit on emergency tyre the rest of our journey was very long and tiring. Roads quite bumpy so sleep impossible. Luckily I got a long sleep overnight, first full night since I started this trip. New tyre purchased today ready for moving Rotorua tomorrow after visiting Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove.
NZ has welcomed us with rain both light showers and heavy downpours, shame because the pool looks welcoming, may just have to swim in it anyway. Hot tub to warm us after cold swim.
Booked dinner tonight as Salt and Pepper squid on the menu. Yesterday I had a nice Greek salad at the Caves, not exactly traditional but just the job.

Barata – have a good lunch with Wiwi and I certainly hope to catch up with you both in my last week which is based in Welly. Botanical Gardens might be nice. Not sure if my OH will join us but we will see. He is trying to find Pork Pies in every supermarket we visit, I suspect he will be unlucky in his search. He is enjoying lots of fish and cheese though.

Purple/ Amazon We enjoyed the Freo Markets but had taken a picnic as we needed to use up fridge food. Brewery will be saved for next visit in 2 years. I really love Perth and my family feel the same. It’s so quiet though and everything seems to close so early. Even tourist attraction shut at 4 pm. Most restaurants are empty at 9 pm. Feels alien? But refreshing, no crowds anywhere even in the market.

Sun has just popped out so I am heading to pool, bye for now.

I’m hunkering down, inside under the fan, to avoid the 34 deg outside, so have checked all the recipes in Fast800 thoroughly.
I’m quite disappointed! Most are geared to cold climate eating, so are cooked, and many include carbs (pasta etc) that are really unnecessary on fast days.
I doubt I will add any of them to my recipe collection.
Michael talks about avoiding tropical fruits, yet mango features in quite a few!
He certainly seems to have trawled the forum for ideas on how to cope, though.
Hot weather, like this, makes it very easy to eat minimally. P 😊😊

    Hi Purple,

    I’m up watching tennis!

The recipes in the original book contained so many ingredients I didn’t want to eat so I didn’t bother. They are a great idea for those who don’t cook or have never counted calories before but I find it easier to adapt ordinary recipes that contain the foods I want to eat. Most of the things I’ve made have become fast diet friendly by cutting down on the oil and tweaking ratios of ingredients slightly.
The first time I make anything I calorie count the recipe and record any changes which is worth the effort.

It’s so much better for compliance if we can eat the kind of food we enjoy πŸ˜€
