  • Day 28, Germany, FD800

Fasting is going well so I’m going for a FD800 today.

@brightonbelle I hope the pain is less by now. You still have more than a week before you head off to Lisbon so if the antibiotics work it may be possible.

@funshipfreddie Congratulations on the house buy and how brave to refuse to make a higher offer!

@missybear You’re on the right path, although in small steps, your weight is going down.

@michelinme Losing 4 kg since Christmas is realy good, you did well! How nice you had a good haircut. I had the problems with cutting my curly hair in the past. In Germany I never found anyone who could cut it the way I wanted it. My DH gave it a try and he became quite good at. Now my hair is grey, most of the curls have gone but it’s still wavy. We had the same problems with my mother, we thought she couldn’t live on her own anymore ( she could hardly walk) but she disagreed. At 90 y.o. her lifelong friend moved to a retirement home and then she decided to join her. It was such a relieve for everyone.

    CD of about 1250 calories
A challenging day for DH. Seems to be shutting down and not trying. Hoping tomorrow will be better. Exhausted and going to bed now but wanted to quickly sign in and stay accountable.
Hope everyone has good day or evening.
    Onward and downward.

    Day 28 Melbourne, Australia FD

It has been a hot day so salad and fruit for my FD has been relatively easy. I now have 2 weeks with no work and am looking forward to having normal sleep patterns. It will be a challenge with fasting, but I know I can do it.

@funshipfreddie I’m doing a happy dance for you. Congratulations on getting the house. As long as the agent now gets the paperwork to you.

@brightonbelle I hope the antibiotics kick in soon and the infection clears quickly.

@maui sending virtual hugs to you and best wishes to your DH. It is not a fun journey for either of you.

    Day 28 UK FD800/CD?

Yesterday was almost an accidental FD but derailed by lemon curd – I find it so hard to resist! I forgot to weigh this morning as tired as heck, just managed to get dressed & chores done before 10am zoom meeting. More chores then an afternoon OFF – yay! I would be making marmalade but forgot to buy sugar so that will hopefully be tomorrow. The poor seville oranges have been sitting in the fridge for over a week now…

One more bright thing – I’d misremembered last week’s weight so I’ve actually weighed in exactly the same rather than putting on. I’m reminding myself this is a whole 10lb down on my 1 January post-Christmas weight – all in all, I’m doing better than I think!

@jaifaim Hello! I hope all’s going well with your health and care for your dear mum x

@litprof Congratulations on your 6xFD800 and 5lb loss – that’s brilliant progress! A lot can be accomplished in 4 days ๐Ÿ™‚

@funshipfreddie hoping everything goes smoothly with the purchase and this long transition into your new home

@snowflake56 yes, curly hair needs different treatment. I stayed with my last hairdresser from habit but am excited with the change now to a specialist curly cut! Your mother’s situation sounds really similar to my mother. Her mobility is really reduced and she is struggling on the stairs in her flat but doesn’t want anything to change. I’m hoping she will agree to doctor reviewing her this week – I suspect he will suggest rehab and she will resist, but hoping… She doesn’t have any friends of a similar age nearby; she’s never been strong on friends and sadly most of her peers have died ๐Ÿ™

@maui sorry it was a challenging day with/for DH and an exhausting one for you. Very glad your DSs are on their way to support you

@malee57 yay for hot weather on FDs! Tho I can’t imagine it right now as I think about getting an extra jumper. Yes, time off work takes extra effort – but you can do this!

Day 28 Thought – a lot can be accomplished in this last few days, while also thinking ahead. What learning or ideas are you taking to next month?

    Strength to Saturday’s fasters!

Quick check in Feeling much more positive today May as well look at my forced abstinence as a blessing and go for a great end to the month

Will have a proper catch up on posts tomorrow and set up the February challenge ๐Ÿ’ช

    Day 28 – USA/GA – NFD

Weigh-in: 216 lbs. A few ounces under yesterday. “Delaying gastronomic satisfaction” needs to be a new phrase on my NFDs, too! I know this. Just got to take it on.

@funshipfreddie My trip is a week from tomorrow ๐Ÿ™‚

Tomorrow should be a FD. Today’s my parents’ 51st anniversary!

    Day 28 – Rural Nebraska, USA – NFD 152.8

Don’t know what I was last Saturday morning because I had to be out the door too early to post and I didn’t write it down anywhere, but I’m okay with this morning’s scale number; to go from a empty belly on Friday morning to dinner out on Friday evening means there will be bulk inside me on Saturday morning, not that I’ve gained over two pounds–I certainly didn’t eat 7K calories yesterday, after all.

My laptop took a full hour to start this morning because of a (“the”?) Windows 11 update, so I’m running late for much chatter. My plan for today is to make cookies for tomorrow at church, so I’ll do that this morning when my will-power is at its highest; then tonight we’re having stew for supper, so that’ll be yummy but not decadent requiring will-power for restraint. Tomorrow has some eating challenges, but I’ll face them after I’ve dispatched today’s! That leaves lunch today, and I think I have a good plan for it to keep me under 1500 for the day.

We got an inch of snow overnight (and DH loved the new push-scoop I bought last week) and more is forecast for this afternoon, as well as an arctic cold front: it was 28 at 7am, is now 16, and tomorrow will be a high of 8. (Tomorrow’s high is -14C, in other words.) Brr!!

So, off I go to make cookies and then bundle up REALLY WELL to brave the one block walk to church; staying home would be nice, but there are too many temptations here to be easy to behave, so it’s good to have a place to go with things there to do, LOL!

    Have a grand one, everyone!

    USA. Day 28. FD

I had to trash my OMAD yesterday because I felt nauseous and had zero energy. Today I will do a normal FD800. I think my poor old body can’t handle OMAD anymore. That’s fine. I need that energy.

Today I have my grandson over (another reason to need energy), so I don’t have much time online today. I am adding myself to the pocket list today and hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Day 29 Melbourne, Australia NFD

Yesterday’s FD went well. NFDs are always my downfall. I have a meal plan for today and need to resist snacking outside of that. Tomorrow will be another FD and then possibly no more for a week as I have stuff happening.

I’m busy today which helps avoid too much snacking. But it is all around the house so I am close to the fridge and temptation. The weather will not be too bad as we are getting up to 23c which will be delightful.

@liprof that is excellent progress. I can’t even do one b2b so I don’t know how you have managed 6 FD800s.

@michekinme well done on such a big loss. And well done on catching up on so much work. That sounds like a massive effort.

Day 28 Ohio, US — NFD

Wow! This last week has been completely chaotic! On the plus side, I’ve been more active outside my home than any time since the pandemic started. On the other side, the dental infection is still going on, even with appointments with my dentist and with my endodontist. The upshot has been periods of great activity alternating with crashes into major naps. This is just to touch base with everyone, but right now I’m so fatigued that I’ll have to sign off. With any luck I’ll get caught up with everyone in the near future.

    Day 29, Germany, FD800

@michelinme I can understand why elderly people want to stay in their own homes, giving up your independence is never easy. It’s a difficult situation for everyone. Perhaps the doctor can persuade your mother to go to rehab and she finds out how nice it is being taken care of. Never give up hope, unexpected things can happen. What I take with me from returning here this month is that it helps me to stay focussed.

    @matpi Take care!

Although I don’t think anyone is fasting this Sunday, I’ll start the pocket list.

    Day 29 – South Africa ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ – NFD

@snowflake56 – I was going to join you on the list today, but I’m feeling a little sorry for myself due to having a sore knee & having a somewhat embarrassing experience yesterday. I popped into a supermarket for a couple of things; I grabbed a shopping basket, & then I noticed the area where they usually keep the trolleys was empty. So I took what I believed to be a shortcut to the fruit & veg section. What I didn’t realise was that there’s a thick metal bar across the floor, which I guess somehow secures the trolleys or stops them from rolling. And I walked right into it & went flying across the floor, taking two stacks of shopping baskets with me! I jumped up quickly, somehow thinking if I behaved normally that maybe no-one would have noticed. Yeah, right. I think everyone in the vicinity saw & heard the shopping baskets flying in every direction. So I quickly gathered them up & assured a couple of people who were making a fuss that I was fine. I didn’t feel any pain at all for several minutes, but by the time I got to the checkout I was hobbling along & limping like a 90 year old. Then I noticed I had a huge bruise just below my right knee, & a couple of small cuts/scrapes on my left hand. And no car, because I’d walked. So I limped home about 2 & half kilometres, vowing never to go to that supermarket ever again. I probably will though, but next time I’ll keep my eyes peeled ๐Ÿ‘€ My knee was still a bit sore after I got out of bed this morning, but I’m pretty sure nothing’s broken, & it was fine after I walked around for a couple of minutes. Anyway, I think @northgeorgia will be joining you on the list later.

@matpi – good to know you’re getting out & about at last! I hope you get that infection cleared up very soon & that you get your energy back.

We had some lovely, much-needed rain last night, but the sun is shining this morning & there’s a nice breeze, so I’m off out. Hopefully my legs still work & I’ll try to stay on them today ๐Ÿ˜ณ

    Happy S๐ŸŒžnday!

    Day 29, 2nd post

@funshipfreddie Just came here to look up a recipe for peanutbutter ice cream and found your post. Wow, what a story! I can see it happening and know how you feel after it happended. I’m so glad you have only have a huge bruise and a couple of small cuts/scrapes on your hand. This could have ended much worse, keep watching it although you think it’s okay.

    Day 29 UK NFD

Oh dear @funshipfreddie it did my me chuckle- not at your predicament but at the number of times Iโ€™ve done something similar, itโ€™s just natural instinct to bounce back up and act like nothings happened- the walk home sounds no joke though , hope youโ€™re feeling better tomorrow

See you all on tomorrowโ€™s list

    Day 29 – UK Cam – NFD
Friday’s FD went very well but I faltered yesterday while at DD’s playing with DGD- we went out in the morning to a local recycling centre that has a retail outlet for crafting stuff – had a wonderful scrummage about and came back with some great ‘treasure’ BUT DD had made a delicious creamy chestnut and sweet potato soup with freshly made, crusty bread. I did have some melon for afters rather than cake but doubt I kept below my TDEE as intended. Never mind, I had a super day and that is what counts most!

Today has been busy, busy – had to cut down our ‘seaside palm’ – it’s a huge plant (not a palm at all) which has been a focal point of the garden for years – but the cold weather has blackened the top shoots so we removed it. however, we know from past experience that in 6 months there will be another 1 or even 3 growing from the base so all is not lost. It just looks very bare when you look down the border! Removing it was easy, cutting it down to fit in the green waste container another matter altogether … Plus I was laying cardboard and manure mulch on the allotment plot ready for my beans later in the spring. So foodwise, it has been grabbing 10 mins between jobs – a mug of carrot & coriander soup and chunk of sour dough for lunch and pork loin in the oven for supper – loads of greens/orange veggies to go with it.

@funshipfreddie – had to laugh at your ‘incident’ – but also feel for you, with that long walk back home. Arnica cream is brilliant for bruising – you can get it from most pharmacies and it really does work. I managed to miss the post I was hitting in with the mallet and caught my hand instead – thought I had mashed my knuckles but wedding ring took the blow instead – I had a sore hand for 2 days but regular application of arnica cream means there’s hardly any bruising at all. I did feel a fool though, I had an audience looking on with interest as I was making a composting bay from old pallets and they wanted to know what I was doing.

@michelinme – I just love lemon curd – eat it with a spoon straight from the jar ๐Ÿ™‚ which is why I don’t have it in the house, along with marmalade – my other wicked sin. How about lemon curd and cream cheese victoria sandwich? Now, there’s a marriage made in food heaven (for me, at least). Hope you get the marmalade made soon.

Tomorrow will be an FD whilst volunteering so probably won’t get to post as off before 7.30 am so I’ll catch up again later in the week on our February page!

    Day 29 USA (Illinois) NFD

About 7″ of new snow kept us home from church this morning (watched online… not many there) since it is about 10 miles drive through the countryside into town. We have pretty high winds that drift horribly across our blacktops and highway making early morning driving rather hazardous.

I am happy to report my bone density test showed all normal, but I will still keep taking Calcium + D to satisfy my doctor. Looks like the height shrinkage is just cuz I am 74 … I do remember my mother got shorter with age. Also happy that 6:1 (one true 200-400 calorie FD) is working in maintenance.

@stitchincarol – you are doing we well with all your activities and even cookie baking! I did that last Sunday for my P.E.O. meeting. Our program was the local Fire Chief, so I found a recipe for Firehouse Cookies. With ONE egg, cup of butter and cup of oil, the recipe made about 8 dozen cookies! I sent most of them home with the fire fighters.

@funshipfreddie – worst part of what I read is that you had to walk home! I torqued out a knee in a play (while onstage) once and had to finish the show as my knee swelled. That was about 30 years ago, and the knee has never been quite the same. Sure do hope you have no lasting problems, except maybe embarrassment to go back to that grocer?

Going to do some sewing today for DD whose baby is due the end of April. I found some of her old blankets, etc. and a couple things that had been gifts. Need some sprucing up is all.

    Onward and downward.

    Day 29 – USA/GA – FD

Weigh-in: 220 lbs. For such a good example of approach on a NFD on Friday, Saturday was the anti-approach! I just got out of control quickly and refused to accept responsibility, so I deserve the 4 lb gain.

@funshipfreddie Sorry to hear about the supermarket disaster!

Going for a WFD today and better behavior this week before my trip the following week, when I’ll be off the 5:2 for the week.

    Day 29. USA/HI. NFD
Yesterday turned into a CD of 1200 calories.
No recumbent bike workouts for the past several days. I really need to get back to it. Not sure where my motivation went but it has deserted me completely right now.
DH had a rough day on Friday but yesterday was a delight. I am very thankful as I felt very discouraged. Today I will go to work for the full day at the gallery and not drive to Rehab. Both sons seem to think this is a good idea.
@funshipfreddie As others have posted, I had a similar incident. When the doctor came to our house to check on DH, he put his large medical bag on the floor and was assisting DH to try getting up out of bed. In an attempt to help, I rushed to the other side of the bed, tripping over the medical bag and becoming airborne. I landed with a loud scream and a ton of embarrassment. Yes, I think weโ€™ve all done this type of thing.
Weโ€™ve had lots of rain here in Hawaiโ€™i with flooding and closed roads in some areas. I had to watch the weather posts and make sure the trip to rehab was ok yesterday. Pouring rain at rehab and the old facility has an open design with all the walkways and dining areas covered but no outside wall. Itโ€™s quite lovely to look out into the garden areas but it did get cold. I brought DH a knit hat to keep his head warm and a heavy flannel shirt, also small blanket for his legs in the wheelchair. We set up camp with his lunch tray , his sketch pad from a trip to London and had such a lovely time. He was able to communicate and even spoke with DS53on the phone.
Thanks to everyone and prayers for all facing caregiving and health issues. I think posting helps keep us grounded as life sometimes spins totally out of control in so many areas. If we retain control of our weight loss journey it does provide some comfort.

    Day 29 UK NFD

Two days of eating sugar & carbs and I’m feeling very puffed up again. Yesterday’s was red lentil pasta plus an almond flour ginger mug cake with golden syrup, today’s was a large jacket potato, snickers bar and fresh pineapple. My body doesn’t seem very happy with any of them but particularly the sugar. I ordered the Allen Carr comfort eating book which arrived this afternoon so I’ll plough through that this week – fingers crossed it’s as effective for me as his stop smoking book was years ago. Not sure why I’ve gone a bit awol this last week but I’ll be bouncing back tomorrow with a solid FD to finish the month

Glad to go to church today without anything in particular I had to do. I spent coffee time talking to a new international family, hearing about a gay couple’s previous expereince elsewhere and then planning stewarding for an event. I picked up tons of papers a friend had kindly printed for me ahead of upcoming conference – I find it easier to read hard copies than online. Now I ‘just’ need to read them!

I forgot to buy the marmalade sugar AGAIN so not spent this afternoon making marmalade. Instead that will fit in during the week and I’ve enjoyed a relaxed afternoon. Now heading for bath and an early night – I know how much better I feel on more sleep!

@brightonbelle glad you are feeling better – yay for the silver lining

@malee57 well done for having a meal plan! That’s definitely something I need to think about for next month

@northgeorgia i hope your parents had a fabulous anniversary. Sending strength for your Sunday WFD!

@stitchincarol loving your thinking – thank you for sharing your thought processes

@malee57 I’m with you on struggling with NFDs at home! Hope you had a good one ๐Ÿ™‚

@matpi sorry you are still feeling so rough; hope you feel better very soon

@snowflake56 yes, being here, joining conversations and daily posting for accountability makes it much easier!

@funshipfreddie OUCH! Hope your injury settles down without any further adventures. That’s a lot of us fallen over, dental infections or otherwise ill this month – please go gently xx

@gardenlily i’m the same with lemon curd – and was given two jars for christmas! now gone…

@songbirdme great news about your bone scan ๐Ÿ™‚ You continue to be a poster person for maintenance with your highly effective 6:1 routine

@maui yesterday sounds like so much better a day for DH! I’m glad you have the support of your DSx2 in taking a break from visiting rehab today while you have your full day at the gallery. Sounds as tho your DH is very well cared for there

Day 29 – just two days left of this month’s challenge! I’m going to reset tomorrow with a WFD/LFD to recoup some of my Jump Start January progress. Are you thinking ahead for February goals?

    Day 30 Melbourne Australia FD

My last FD for the month. I will be down to 75kg which was my aim for the month. Then I am visiting family for a week so will not be able to do any FDs. But will have a great time.

I’m probably going on steroids today. Which is really not going to help my weight. I think it will be only for a week. But it has taken me 4 months to lose 5kg. I don’t want to regain it in a week. I will really need lots of willpower. Or more to the point- won’t power. So I won’t eat too much unhealthy food.

    Day 30 AUS FD800

Another week of FD800 is starting here, and I am ready for it!

I had a relaxed weekend, but not more than 1200-1300 calories each day, and I’m 0.2k up today. For me it’s hopeless if I don’t eat the right kind of calories. Why does bread glue itself to my body in such an unpleasant way, when it tastes so delightful? (These days it also gives me a bit of a stomach ache, to remind me.)

So I’m starting this week at 58.5, and curious to see what an FD800 work week might bring.

    Day 30, Germany, FD800

@gardenlily – I’ll check out the Arnica cream, thanks! I’m off to see my doctor later anyway. Just a follow-up to the blood pressure situation from a few months ago, so I’ll ask him while I’m there. Good to know I’m not the only accident-prone forum member after reading everyone else’s experiences ๐Ÿ˜…

@snowflake56 – the knee is much better, thanks! I managed to clock up 10,500 steps yesterday anyway, so I’m pretty sure the damage is only superficial.

@brightonbelle – it’s interesting how people react differently to witnessing someone fall. I’m usually shocked, especially if it’s an older person. But a so-called friend to whom I recounted my experience via a Whatsapp message replied with:- ‘That is hilarious๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚’ &, ‘Am roaring here I can’t stop wish I’d been I’d been there๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ’. It takes all sorts, right? ๐Ÿ˜…

@michelinme – I recently started reading another one of Allen Carr’s ‘Easyway’ books – ‘The Easy Way to Stop Gambling’ ๐Ÿ˜ณ One thing I’ve never done is this on-line gambling, but I think it’s going to destroy a lot of lives. It’s becoming rampant here, with non-stop advertising from several sites. And with a casino virtually on my doorstep, I can see myself getting into trouble if I don’t nip it in the bud. So, although it’s not exactly 5:2-related, my goal for February is to finish that book & find more constructive, healthier pursuits.

The last FD for Jump-Start January for many of us today. Let’s make it a good one. Stronger Together! ๐ŸŽฏ

Just back from a break in Suffolk catching up with dear friends – was absolutely shattered on arrival home yesterday and felt really unwell by 5pm – was this a result of too many late nights and way too much good food and wine during my time away………..I always forget what a long drive it is to do on your own……yesterday ended up as an unplanned FD800 – I had eaten during a break on the journey but felt so unwell once home that after a hot shower I was in bed before 7pm and a very restless night followed – Still feeling under par this morning so decided to log on here for inspiration and motivation – @litprof – you have inspired me to end this challenge with a B2B2B FD 800 as this would be a good way to give my poor stomach and liver a much needed rest…….

I see that @brightonbelle has stepped up to set up the February challenge – thank you so much ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ’ if you need me to set up a spreadsheet let me know…..

@funshipfreddie – great news on your house, sorry about your accident but if it’s any consolation I think we have all been there. Thank you for sharing that inspirational article about Joan MacDonald – just goes to show it’s never too late to make major changes to our health and well being!!

    Day 30 – USA/GA – NFD

Weigh-in: 216 lbs. Should be able to do another FD this week and keep things looking good to next week, when all bets are off while on my trip *boohoo* I have another interrupting conference event the first two days of March, but other than that, I should be getting into the swing of things and try to get off this plateau by Spring.

    Day 30 – Rural Nebraska, USA – NFD 154.4

I’m pleased with my behavior over the weekend; it could have been more restrained, but could easily have been far less restrained–every time I wandered into the kitchen wanting a treat or a nibble, I ended up walking back to the living room, knowing I didn’t actually want to eat it; I embraced the desire, in other words, according to The Outline as explained by @funshipfreddie. And given that we had a lovely meal out on Friday, I cooked a lovely meal Saturday, we had another meal out with friends Sunday night, and I am cooking yet another lovely meal tonight, it’s a real accomplishment for me to be up only a bit, reflecting that I’m full of digesting food, rather than full of huge over-indulgence. Long explanation to say I’m pleased.

@michelinme How LOVELY that you’ve finally managed the Herculean job of catching up on all your paperwork! I’ll bet your peaceful Sunday felt like a huge reward for getting it all done. How’s the book impacting your thoughts so far?

@jaifaim Delighted you’re on the mend!

@litprof I’m in awe of your 6xFD800s…a true-grit effort reflected by the weight you lost; well done.

@ccco It’s so good that you know your body well enough to know that FD800s are better for you than OMADs; well done on figuring out the solution and applying it.

@matpi I do hope your dental issues are resolved soon and that you can return to good health!

OH, @funshipfreddie! I smiled in recognition that you tried to pretend it was all okay by jumping up–we all do that, don’t we?–but that walk home must have been miserable!

@gardenlily OUCH on smashing your hand and wedding ring–is this just in the last couple of days? So does the absence of bruising simply mean it looks better, or does it also feel better? And are you mostly returned to normal now?

@songbirdme Wow, 8doz from one normal recipe, not doubled? That’s a huge recipe, LOL! I doubled my own recipe, and got about 6-7 dozen. Yeah, I ate more cookies/cookie dough on Saturday than my best mind wanted, but not as many as I might have. And the other woman who baked for Sunday morning ended up not driving to town because the wind chill had the temps down to a -18F/-28C, and she called to say she’s too old to go out in such temperatures. ๐Ÿ‘ There didn’t end up being a normal number at our church either, so having only my cookies there proved to be the perfect amount of goodies: we had one cookie to take home. Whew: temptation removed. You must be so excited for this grandbaby coming at the end of April! Where do they live?

@maui So glad Saturday was a lovely day for you; your description brought it alive for me, and I smiled to feel as if I’d been there with you.

@malee57 It’s a bummer that the steroids will mess up what would otherwise be lovely scale results from your FD. That will pass however, and when they’re again all gone from your body, you’ll be thrilled by what the scales say, right?

@daffodil2010 How lovely that your DH’s mum can just come over for weekends here and there; such a joyful situation! And I’m delighted for you that the cloves helped; I’ll keep that in mind if I ever have a toothache again, @snowflake56

@brightonbelle PERFECT name for February; thanks so much for hosting it!

I need to defrost my freezer in the basement and my usual approach is to put things in laundry baskets (I don’t begin to have enough coolers for all that’s in my freezer) and put them outside until the freezer is thawed and ready to be filled up again. This week is the perfect time as it’s so bitterly cold. But even in bitter cold, sun can start the thawing process, so I won’t put it out this bright sunny day…tonight is probably the solution. So perhaps DH and I will start on our tax paperwork. Ugh…but it’s time.

    Have a grand one, everyone!

    Day 30 UK FD

I fell asleep sitting up at around 9.30pm and woke up at 6am -that’s what I call tired!

I forgot to weigh myself this morning but I’m sure it’s nothing good after the weekend’s sugar input – what is it about sugar or carbs that make me inflate like a tyre?! Aiming to finish the month strong with b2b FD: I’ve just had a mushroom and spinach omelette and I have lined up a spicy parsnip and sweet potato dahl for supper. I’ve been out of the lunch habit but I think this might be helpful to avoid evening snacks. I’m planning an early night every night this week to build up my sleep bank before next week’s conference. The combination of healthier food, month end/beginning motivation and Allen Carr book will set me up well.

It’s too easy to beat ourselves up for a slip, a reverse or a plateau but this is a flexible way of life. We simply take stock, work out what’s working well (or not) and adjust accordingly. It’s not rocket science. So as we get to the end of the Jump Start January challenge I’m stopping to remember where I came from on 1 January and where I’m heading, one mindful decision at a time.

@malee57 steroids are great for feeling better but tough for losing weight! Fasting will really help. I hope they help you feel better very soon

@litprof all calories are not created equal, are they?! I’m SO puffed after the weekend’s sugar, out of all proportion to the calories consumed. Great to see you in full on mojo mode for your FD800 week!

@snowflake56 great goal for February: that would be a very speedy return to your maintenance range!

@funshipfreddie hope the doctor’s appt goes well. Has fasting affected your BP? Thanks for the article – it is never too late!

@daffodil2010 hope you had a lovely weekend with DH’s mum

@dramaqueen6 being able to get back up is a great reason for losing weight!

@at welcome back! I hope you feel better today

Busy day so an excellent start to my FD. Shopping then called in on dad and home for brunch. While I was out a flock of sheep got into our garden, according to DH the farmer was very rude, unapologetic and the holes in the lawn and the mess left behind the sheep is unbelievable! ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ’ฉ ๐Ÿ’ฉ ๐Ÿ’ฉ DH is not amused, glad I was out.

@michinlinme Januaryโ€™s jump start challenge has been a great start to the year for me. I feel my 5:2 routine has returned and I have discovered that doing 18:6 TRE every day seems to suit me. Thank you for your attentive hosting.

    Day 30 – Ireland – FD ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธโœ…

    Hello everybody!
All is ok here – Iโ€™ve been in an antibiotic and strong tablets which made me feel very tired but I think on the mendโ€ฆ have some referrals to consultants over the next few weeks to check bloods, scans etc. I am adopting a positive attitude and just want to get back to normal and my exercise and all the rest. I have a break in Portugal planned in two weeks time so really would like to feel well for thatโ€ฆ will get there but have never felt this wiped.
The vertigo etc feels better with the tablets so have caught up a little on posts and am back in work today.

@brightonbelle I hope you are feeling ok on your antibiotics / I had the same thing about ten years ago / itโ€™s pretty painful and the antibiotics will tire you so mind yourself – You will be fine for Lisbon ๐Ÿ™

@ccco – hope you are feeling better now and that you had fun with your grandson ๐Ÿ’•

@daffodil2010 cloves are amazing for toothache.. an old family remedy for us much the same as @snowflake56 described ๐Ÿ‘do get it checked for infection if the pain persistsโ€ฆ sorry to hear about your worries for your dadโ€ฆ itโ€™s so very difficult to watch our parents deteriorate.

@funshipfreddie I hope you are ok after your fall – sounds awful! And I have to say – fair play to you for resisting the nudge to offer more for your new home.. what a cheek the seller had to ask last minute if youโ€™d increase your offer / huge congratulations ๐ŸŽ‰

@gardenlily I hope your DH is well and that you are ok. The lemon curd cake you described sounds deliciousโ€ฆ Iโ€™m another one who finds it hard to resist.

@michelinme you are doing really well ๐Ÿ’ช. Leading by example!!
Iโ€™m another curly haired oneโ€ฆ have the best hairdresser though so am very lucky.

@snowflake56 – well done on a Sunday fast! I am always in awe of those of you who can.

@litprof – bread does the same to meโ€ฆ. Iโ€™m cutting it out along with some other things to see if I feel better. I often get a niggly pain in my side when I eat too much bread so like thatโ€ฆ a good reminder!

@northgeorgia – enjoy Vegas. Fab place – one visit was enough for me but has ti be seen to be believed. It is worth tripping out to see the Hoover Dam ๐Ÿ‘

@dramaqueen6 – I thought I was accident prone but Iโ€™m so reassured to hear all the stories here! ๐Ÿ˜‚ so glad you are enjoying the groupโ€ฆ Iโ€™m so glad to be back.

@missybear – wel done on the drop โฌ‡๏ธ . Delayed drops are quite common too so keep the faith ๐Ÿ‘

@malee57 – thank you for the motivation ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’ช hope the steroid do the job ๐Ÿ‘

@matpi- hope you are okโ€ฆ so many here feeling off – I understand it and have been in the same space. Be well ๐Ÿ’•

@maui – Iโ€™m so sorry to hear about your DH – i do hope he gets back home soon as planned. I have accupuncture todayโ€ฆ cannot wait ๐Ÿคฉ

@songbirdme – belated happy wedding anniversary ๐Ÿ’• 54!years is incredible!!! Glad to hear your recent doctors check up went wellโ€ฆ

@stitchincarol I am trying to apply myself today like youโ€ฆ. You should feel pleased and proud. โ˜บ๏ธ

Hope I remembered everyoneโ€ฆ if not โ€ฆ and itโ€™s a risk ๐Ÿ’• Iโ€™m sorry! Trying to get back on track ๐Ÿš‚

    Day 31 Melbourne, Australia NFD

Sort of busy today getting last minute stuff done before going away tomorrow. I am going up to Queensland with my 2 sisters from Melbourne to visit our 2 sisters in Queensland. One of whom turns 50 on Sunday. So, no fasting for me for the next week. But it will be lots of fun with my sisters.

As expected, my weight is up. But I am happy with the trajectory I was on and am not going to stress about it. Without the steroids I think I would have been a smidge under 75kg, and that is what I was aiming for.

Thankyou @michelinme for hosting January. And thankyou @brightonbelle for hosting February.

Apologies once again for not checking in ๐Ÿ™ … however have been keeping track and am so impressed with everyone’s efforts and chats.

@funshipfreddie … congratulations on the purchase of your new home๐Ÿ””๐Ÿ””๐Ÿ””๐Ÿ””.. such good news albeit the trip was not good news๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜œ …. hope your knee is recovered now๐Ÿฆต๐Ÿ˜. I read that newspaper article about the weightlifting gran… very inspirational and hope that I can sometime soon put some of that into my life ๐Ÿคฉ

So many of you are inspirational and motivating but will take too long to mention you all. Nevertheless, I especially have been following @maui …. my best wishes and thoughts are for you with your daily journey to the rehab to help your DH …. I do hope you can have him home soon (10th Feb?)and wish that you will have the practical help and assistance at home that you will need. I particularly related to you calling us your 5:2 family…. I think we all regard this forum and members as that and know we all receive such strength from reading everyone’s posts. A great gathering of minds! … and not just about IF!

My house has not sold … very dispiriting and trying not to overthink it. I have three (3) more OPEN HOUSE Saturdays left and then… who knows… ๐Ÿ˜’๐Ÿ˜’ not handling it too well ATM.

On the maintenance WOL side… all going well … still doing Mondays and Thursdays FD800 and weight is maintaining just as it should. Happy about that at least. So if you are wondering if it is possible, let me tell you it is….. just follow the IF 5:2 plan and you will succeed… it is just mathematics after all. So last day of Jump-Start January, time to review and then be positive as we dive into Focused February… monthly challenges are little steps but it works!๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

@michelinme Iโ€˜ll just give it a try, letโ€™s see if I can get back in maintenance. Thank you for hosting and you lovely support!

@daffodil2010 Iโ€™m glad it worked, do you have any idea what causes the pain?

@jaifaim I hope you start to feel better again. I agree, there are a lot of family remedies around that work but most of them seem to be forgotten. Fasting on a Sunday isnโ€™t hard for me, Iโ€™m retired so Sundays are not that special anymore.

@funshipfreddie Good news on the knee. Thank you for the link, very inspirational!

    Day 31 – UK Cam – NFD
Yesterday’s FD went well – spent most of the day lugging barrows of soil about the place and shovelling it around flower beds – after a hot soak to ease the muscles, I barely touched my eggs on sour-dough toast and sank into bed (with a sigh) at 8 pm! Today will be an absolutely quiet day – bit of pottering in the garden, bit of quilting and light meals. DH down at the hospital for another scan but he is feeling more positive (knowing there’s no magic remedy has actually cheered him up!). Out tonight with the girls for a lecture in nearby town – well-known author talking about her latest book. No doubt coffee and cake will be offered afterwards, I shall need lots of determination to resist. On positive note, it will be shop bought and not home-made so easier to turn down.

@stitchincarol – hand much better, the wedding ring is OK, the finger underneath swelled up hence need to remove it pronto (the ring, not the finger!) but 6 days later it is fine, just a bit stiff.

@linda.b – sorry to hear the house didn’t sell – next to divorce, selling a house is one of the most stressful things to do. Fortunately we haven’t moved in 37 years so not looking forward to any future move!

@malee57 – hope your visit with 2 sisters goes well – enjoy the family time together, precious moments.

Hoping everyone who is under the weather (feeling poorly) soon makes a full recovery – certainly in the northern hemisphere, January/February are the sick months with so many bugs flying about.

Finally, Has Jump-Start January worked for me – well, sort of. I am ending the month exactly where I wanted, my pre-Christmas weight. Mentally, however, I am in a much more positive state and definitely ready now to up the game, back to proper 5:2 with a goal set and plans to make for February.

Hope to see you all next month!

    Day 31 – Ireland ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช – FD keto

Thank goodness January is nearly done, it is really such a looooong month.
Tomorrow is Irish Springtime, St Brigid’s Day,, and signs of Spring are everywhere with snowdrops, early daffodils peeping through the earth, songbird…..yay for Spring

How did January go…..? Well I am pleased to report three pounds lighter and an inch less on my waist since New Year’s Day ……but I feel it should have been better.

Not as bloated as before so onwards we go.

@snowflake I suspect I may have broken a tooth which caused some pain, but I put off any dental visit until it’s an absolute emergency ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Great to hear from everyone, this 5:2 family is a great little family.

Thanks @michelinme for your gracious hosting.

See you all in Februar with @brightonbelle and Focused February.

    Day 31 – South Africa ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ – NFD – ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿท4 months

    Can’t believe it’s month-end already?! 0.9 kgs/2 lbs down for the month ๐ŸŽฏ And I’m relieved I didn’t have to resort to 4:3 ๐Ÿ™‚

    @at – welcome back!

@jaifaim – good to hear you’re feeling a bit better. I hope you get to the root of what’s sapping your energy. That break in Portugal might make a huge difference.

@michelinme – my BP?! I’m baffled. I quit drinking at exactly the same time as I was diagnosed with hypertension 4 months ago. I stopped taking the pill the doc prescribed around the 10th of January, when it went down to 97/58. I carried on checking it every day & it seemed ideal. I went back to the doc yesterday, & it was +150 over…whatever. I didn’t even register the 2nd number because I was gob-smacked by the first one. He took it again a few minutes later with a different device & it was still +140. I suggested it was maybe the ‘white coat syndrome’. Anyway, he wants me to resume taking the daily pill, & suggested I pop in every couple of days & let one of the nurses check it. He thinks my gadget is giving false readings. I was very disappointed, because I thought I’d sorted it out. Oh, & he took one glance at my knee & said it’s fine ๐Ÿ˜… Anyway, I’ll hold off on resuming the BP pill & see what happens with the nurses’ readings. I just took it again with my device & it was 118/70 ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

@linda.b – Thank you! And I’m sorry to hear you haven’t found a buyer yet? But, still time. Have you considered auctioning your house? I’m not exactly sure how they work, but I imagine you can set a minimum price. Might be worth looking into ๐Ÿค”

@michelinme – thanks so much for hosting, & for keeping us on our toes with the questions ๐Ÿ’

    Day 31 – USA/GA – NFD/ZBC

Weigh-in: 221 lbs. Boooo! Heaviest all month. A 5 lb gain in a day is bloating, but I have to be honest — my NFD diet is loading up with junk. I need a good restart. After my Vegas trip, I’ll be taking some lunches to work with me again instead of eating out every NFD. I’ll also shun the soft drinks when possible and drink water. Also not a problem to try some 500 calorie meals for supper, or some decent OMADs. I know what to do. I just don’t want to. Creeping back into the 220s makes me want to, though. Ha!

    Here’s to a refresh.

    Day 31 – UK – FD800/CD

Lovely walk with my regular group this morning and enjoyed catching up with everyone after my recent absence! After that flat white and bacon roll (no butter) with the gang I think today might end up being more of a CD of around 1000cals than a FD800 but will see what my self control is like by the end of the day…….

To my 5:2 family many thanks for the welcome back ๐Ÿค—

I had a good Nimble November and weighed in at the beginning of December at 59.3kg which was on a downward trend back to my maintenance range but sadly I was mostly AWOL from my 5:2 lifestyle in December and January and haven’t dared step on the scales since so will weigh myself tomorrow……..

@snowflake56 – apologies if I let you down after you so kindly put me on the pocket list for today but I will try to stay within than 800cal limit ๐Ÿคž
@michelinme โ€“ thanks so much for hosting ๐Ÿ’ apologies for my lack of input and support to the group

See you all tomorrow for a Focused February with @brightonbelle

I end the month reminding myself of my self motivating motto since losing weight and reaching maintenance:-
โ€œIf I quit now, I will soon be back to where I started. And when I started, I was desperately wishing to be where I am nowโ€

    Day 31 – Rural Nebraska, USA – WFD 154.4

Same as yesterday, despite the extra food I ate yesterday. While I’ve generally been at least decent, and sometimes good, about using MFP to enter food, yesterday’s food was too challenging to enter, so I didn’t try, and I’m quite sure I went over, perhaps a bit, perhaps a lot. Today’s a new day.

For the month, the record doesn’t show any loss, but the only reason I was at this weight at the beginning of the month was because I’d had the stomach flu, LOL. Given that I’d gone up a bit and was about to throw in the towel two weeks ago, I’m thrilled that I’m back on track and that every week-to-week comparison shows I’ve lost a pound, so I’m pleased with the month.

Now to be focused in February!

Wow, @michelinme, that IS tired to sleep straight through the night sitting up! I’m sure it wasn’t as restful as if you’d been horizontal in bed, but so glad you’re getting sleep and rest!

@missybear I shook my head at the story of the farmer and his sheep. What a mess and what a rude man…either his mom didn’t teach him well enough, or he just ignored her! I hope it’s not too much effort to get the lawn restored to order.

@maui How nice that a family bought one of your DH’s art! Do you have a lovely water bottle to drink from? Perhaps that will help you remember to drink enough not to get dehydrated and consequential headaches?

@jaifaim I’m glad you’re better; it’s always awful to struggle with feeling wiped out without relief. I didn’t remember you also struggle with vertigo; so does DH, and it’s been hitting him more frequently again after a break of some number of months. What is the med that’s been helping you? Here’s hoping you’re absolutely fine by the time you head off to Portugal.

@malee57 Have a grand time with your sisters!

@linda.b Oh, what a frustration it must be that your house hasn’t yet sold. ๐Ÿคžthat it sells in one of your remaining open houses!

@dramaqueen6 Well done on “largely sticking to 5:2”!!! That is indeed a huge accomplishment and worthy of celebration! ๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽˆ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฅณ

@snowflake56 Well done being down 3kg!!!!

@gardenlily How lovely that your DH is feeling more positive. That smashing of your hand must have been so painful!! I’m glad it’s nearly back to normal.

@daffodil2010 I’m sure you’re sad you lost “only” 3lbs, but may I point out all the many months you lost nothing or instead gained? I suggest you simply celebrate you’ve found an approach that works, however slowly, because I’m delighted for you! After all, do the same thing for 12 months running and you’ll be down 36lbs!!!!! ๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽˆ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฅณโค๏ธโค๏ธ

@funshipfreddie You know, I’ve had similar results with BP at the doctor’s office, and can only chalk it up to white coat syndrome, even though the doctors and some of the nurses are actually personal friends, LOL! Makes no sense, does it? I hope your approach proves you were right rather than a faulty BP machine you’re using.

@missybear It’s so hard to be consistent with 5:2 (especially with the 5….), so well done, you!

@at It’s good to hear your upbeat determination; it will be delightful to have you back daily in February!

I’ve not been faithful about exercising since my restart in the middle of the month. Some of the reasons have been very justified, some have been pure laziness. February will be better!

And @michelinme? You’ve been stellar this month. Thanks so much for your excellent hosting!

    Have a grand one, everyone!

    Day 31 UK f800

I thought Iโ€™d hold off posting until Iโ€™d been to the dentist – another course of antibiotics still a bit of a mystery to the root cause – pun intended, but I can fly on Monday ( as long as no new issues) so Iโ€™m happy

Also happy with my 6lb loss for the month – I really did need to turn things round as Iโ€™d been steadily gaining for most of last year so just want to record a steady slow loss for the next few month Thank you for guiding us @michelinme ๐Ÿ’, I know I canโ€™t live up to the high standard you have set – but Iโ€™m sure everyone will put up with me muddling through next month

    Day 31 UK FD800

DELIGHTED to have got to the end of January 7lb down on where I was at the start! I’m impatient to be the other side of 12stone but I’ll take this for now – losing my Christmas gain was my goal for January and I’ve definitely jump-started that!

This morning I weighed in at 169lb after yesterday’s FD800 keto. Eating an omelette lunch made a big difference to evening snacking, as did closing the kitchen, running a bath and going to bed early. I know I could have made more progress this month if I’d avoided weekend sugar – that’s useful learning to take forward to Focussed February.

Today is a late lunch mushroom and tomato omelette with spinach and roast beetroot salad, and an early supper of parsnip and sweet potato dahl with broccoli and vegan chorizo – yum! I’ve been stuck at my desk since 9am but ploughed through one of the difficult things on my list so just one more to do before putting my head down to plough through conference reading. Thank you @stitchincarol it feels liberating – but hard work to keep on top of it atm too!

@missybear well done in getting jump started – so glad you’ve found TRE suits you. Delighted you are ending the month happier and more focussed – that’s a result!

@maui hope you are feeling better today

@jaifaim Lovely to read your long catch up post yesterday. So glad you are more yourself, fingers crossed that the meds do the trick and you are better for your holiday in Portugal. Amazing how many curly girls there are here – and yay for a great curly hairdresser! Naming where we are now is a great beginning, next we move somewhere else – with a little focus ๐Ÿ™‚ It’ll be easier when you feel better which I hope is soon

@malee57 hope you have a lovely time with your 4 sisters! The steroid weight will go when you stop the steroids – go gently and have fun x

@linda.b hope you continue to mend well. So sorry about your house – fingers crossed that it sells on one of these open house saturdays. Well done on maintaining – you give us all hope of what is possible with a little focus x

@dramaqueen6 so glad you’ve had a strong JumpStart challenge – you have done brilliantly! I look forward to joining you over in Focussed February ๐Ÿ™‚

@snowflake56 you can do this – your determination is amazing! Hope you had a great dance class ๐Ÿ™‚

@gardenlily goodness your Monday sounds exhausting – no wonder you slept from 8pm! Congratulations on finishing January at your goal of pre-Christmas weight and on your more positive mindset. Now we can focus on making progress in Feb…

@daffodil2010 congratulations on 3lb loss and whole INCH from your waist – that’s brilliant! You’ve also had a balanced life with family and friends which is wonderful ๐Ÿ™‚ OUCH re tooth – hope it settles down and you can see the dentist soon

@funshipfreddie congrats on 2lb down for JumpStart January! Your BP does sound like white coat hypertension but always good to be on the safe side. My GP stopped my meds for three weeks – tho forgot to allow for the tapering off week. Post covid it was 240/140 and took ages to get under control, last night it was 117/69 after an epsom salt bath, tho i also suspect the meds are still going from my system. I was rather hoping it would be higher as then we’ll try betablockers for my POTs tachycardia but another 10 days of wait and see….

@northgeorgia you know what works for you which is half the battle! Here’s to a focussed start after your Vegas trip

@at it’s always great to have you here sharing your wisdom – looking forward to focussing with you in February!

@stitchincarol i’ve not started reading the book yet – two long desk days with a sprinkling of zoom meetings, trying to stay on top of incoming emails and the last of the difficult tasks. By the time I finish the last thing I want to do is read more words!! But I will pick it up over the next week so that the words are well-digested ahead of 5 nights in a hotel with all the long conference day temptation around me! Luckily I’m also staying alongside two friends who join me in 5:2 encouraging via WhatsApp, so we will motivate and encourage one another ๐Ÿ™‚
Congrats on your up and down month – following your thoughts and experience has been educating and inspiring, thank you for all that you’ve shared. I’m delighted that you are back on track and ready for focussed February!

@brightonbelle I hope these antibiotics do the trick! Congratulations on your SIX POUND loss for January – that’s epic!!! I’m so glad to be passing the baton to you – thank you for hosting Focussed February! See you there ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you to everyone who has been part of JumpStart January, giving me a reason to focus and extra accountability for showing up. It really has been a rollercoaster of a month with all our illnesses, falls, house sales (or not), job issues, family illness in our DHs or elderly parents… Congratulations for getting to the end, for learning on the way and for all the warm and wonderful encouragement of one another. This really is a 5:2 family. Now to focus on February!
