  • Day 10 UK FD 🌈(day 5 AFD)

Weekend didn’t go to plan, alcohol and snacking in the sun. Started for drinks Friday afternoon and carried on all weekend. No dinners I’m a grazer.

Back to it today, at work out of mischief going to have a good FD.

    Day 10, UK, NFD

    Day 10 – UK – FD
Really pleased with the 2lb weight loss. I have all my delicious food prepared for the whole day. And one of my favourite weights classes to look forward to this evening.

    Let’s do this!

    Day 10 | London | FD

Terrible weekend, all the burgers and ice cream you can think of.

Day 10 UK FD – managed to catch up on last few days posts, @at what a true friend you are .

I loved the vegemite discussion, I’m assuming ( perhaps incorrectly ) that it’s similar to marmite ? Which really polarises opinion here it’s a real love or hate thing , I used to gag making sandwiches for my kids but have grown to tolerate it now

Need to put in more effort, but I’m taking it day by day – taking inspiration from those of you who are really sticking with it and seeing great results @fatrabbit & @steve toon taxi driver .Have a good week all x

    Day 10, London U.K. FD

Weighed this morning and lost a pound so happy with that! Had a fairly busy weekend as well including a local summer fair and street food, and a date night out without kids and lots of wine on Saturday. Was down about 3lb on Friday so obviously my weekend has made up for it, but as I said earlier, I’m doing this more for the long term health benefits than the WL

    Good luck today folks!

South Wales UK. Going to start again this week. Was very silly last week fasted all day then binge ate in the night and ruined it both days. Fresh start. Nfd today fasting Tommorow. Be so grearful of any inspirirng stories of weight loss keep me motivated got no willpower 😑

Day – 10, Hampshire, UK -FD

    Day 8- NFD
    Day 9- NFD

Weighted myself on Saturday morning and i’m 69.9, technically up 1.1kgs – feeling seriously unmotivated but I’m also going into self blaming mode, I think i’m over indulging on the NFD and I’m building a lot of muscle because I work out minimum 4 times a week now that the scales are heading in the opposite direction, I would hate to go back into the 70s, I am aiming to be more careful on my NFD because while building muscle is great, its all mental for me, as long as the scales are high, I will feel down about it.

wish me luck, feeling like live hit a solid wall 🙁

    day 9 NFD Huntingdon UK
    day 10 FD
Although Sunday was a NFD I had the family over which involved producing lunch and tea for some healthy appetites. Although I didnt eat outrageously and kept mostly to protein and vegetable/salad choices I felt that I had eaten so much more than recently … didnt feel entirely comfortable I have to say .. and then had to finish steps with a fuller load on board !!!

@Clairebeart12 I started fast2 and steps on 29th May and have lost 15lbs… still have another 21lbs to reach goal weight . Body shape has definitely changed for the better !!! I am sure that it is different for all of us but I am getting used to my changes in diet…. always think quite seriously before I eat something with a lot of calories…. or when I do I compensate with more exercise!!! Once you realise how far you have to walk to burn off that ice cream it changes your thinking …… keep on keeping on !!!

    Day 10 – Woking, UK – FD
    249.8lbs
Definitely feel like I need a fast day today after the weekend. My partner’s mum was visiting so we did coffee and cake on Saturday morning, 3 course pub dinner out and then a big Sunday roast dinner. Hence the 2lbs back on.

Hopefully a good fast day today with plenty of water will shift the temporary gain as I’m sure it’s a combination of food in transit still and a bit of dehydration/water retention. Still it doesn’t make me happy to see that number on the scales after hitting a new low earlier last week.

@xrox – sending lots of positive thoughts, good luck and encouragement your way – frustration is a temporary state of mind, it’ll go.

Good luck to all my fellow fasters today – may the scales be kind to us all!

    Day 10 Belfast FD

I’ve had a roller coaster of a weekend. Young son is buying a house and has encountered a major hiccup, so lots of emotions and fingers crossed for a better outcome this week. NFDs were a bit uncontrolled, but am pressing the reset button.
I started the 7minute workout this weekend. I do some of the exercises quite well, and some I really can’t do at all, so that’s a project to work on.

@at the power of friendship is a wonderful thing. Wishing your friend the very best. How lucky she is to have you.
@fatrabbit and stevetoontaxidriver your success is amazing. You’re inspirational!
@lindasue I’m envious of your butterflies. I’ve lots of blooms at the moment but very few butterflies, even on the buddleia. Their numbers seem to have tailed off these last few years. Well done on your planks, one of my daily challenges too.

It’s hard to believe we’re already on day 10. Stay strong everyone. TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER!

Day 10, Newcastle UK, FD and it’s raining again!
    Day 9, Newcastle UK, NFD

I have many things to be thankful for: my health, a good life, loving family and friends and my faith. 3 good things from last week.

    1. Saturday was mostly sunny and dry so I caught up on work in two gardens after weeks of constant rain.
    2. My OH worked tirelessly in our garden so that I could start planting – after four years of work on the house and four years of plants sitting in pots.
    3. Heard my Dad’s new house completion should only take another two weeks (well a week from today – hurrah!).

    @bigviking – 🙂
    @at – a lovely act for your friend x
@califdreamer – I’m pretty certain Vegemite must be the same as Marmite. I am in ‘the absolutely love it camp’. Problem is, that since cutting out bread, I no longer get to eat it and I don’t like it as a hot drink.
Daughter time & pumpkin ice cream – sounds like a perfect combination @dykask.

We’re off to buy a new shed – the old one is only a few years old but too big and in the wrong place. Never mind, we needed the storage, so it’s served us well.

    Have a good week all.

Day 10, London, UK, FD (1st of B2B2B……2B?)

After 3 NFDs in a row, I’m sighing in relief because today is a FD….yeah!!! My scheduled FD for Saturday has been reallocated to tomorrow, hence 3 NFDs followed by 3 FDs rather than the ADF I had planned, also as I’m travelling on Thursday I think I’ll sneak another FD in to assuage the guilt I guess will come with ‘half board’!!!!!!

@lynzm, stay strong, sometimes half the battle is remembering to use the tools we have so……… get those dragon slayers lined up and ready to do battle!!!!!!!!! Funny really, how I look forward to work days too, ‘cause fasting is sooo much simpler behind a desk!!!

@pashaw, If you’re still checking in from time to time………..I hope ‘things’ are progressing in a positive direction.

    Keep the faith everyone!!!! Onward!!!!

    Day 10, India, FD

    Day 10 – UK – FD

    Day 10 – Scotland – FD

Please keep me in your pocket. After 3 days of binge eating, I really need to reset. It’s proving very tough, and this week will be difficult anyway as we have a few social occasions. But I can’t give up as soon as I start feeling better 🙁

    Day 10 – UK – FD

@lynzm – sounds like we had exactly the same weekend!

@debster251 – hope the house-buying resolves itself soon. Such a stressful time.

@lumat – stay strong – sending lots of virtual support your way. We are in this together!

    Day 10 UK FD

Update, weighed again a couple of hours later and had crossed into the 160s :)) I’ll be under twelve stone soon 🙂 I feel wonderful :)) This definitely feels better than carbs ever tasted!

Am also going to fast today because after eating so much yesterday I am not likely to be hungry and tomorrow is forecast for rain all day so can’t do the outside work then anyway. I will keep busy today by doing the housework as it is looking like rain today too despite it not being forecast. The washing can hang in the conservatory. Other people sit in their conservatories, ours is part animal hospital, part greenhouse, part drying room, part shed, definitely scruffy and the only thing to sit on is a set of steps.

    Day 10….Florida…… FD

Back to the grind stone this morning. Sunday was such a lovely day but clearly not long enough. It seems like as soon as it started it was over. Now the long work week starts…… how hum.

Yesterday was a nice day, didn’t do much, watch a movie with the family, then ended with a nice dinner with my SIL and BIL. They have a vacation home just down the road from us. So, it was a beautiful evening of conversation and laughs.

I did end up telling her about 5:2 and gave her the links, so maybe she’ll be joining us in the WOL. I think she was a little surprised at how easy is it.

Well, time is still flying this morning, so I’m off!

At any given time, the urge to sing The lion sleeps tonight is just a whim away, a whim away, a whim away!

    Day 10, Belfast, FD
    Day 9, Belfast, NFD
    Day 8, Belfast, NFD

@dykask – your outlook on family time and priorities is spot on. And that pumpkin ice-cream sound lush.

@fatrabbit @steve toon taxi driver – congrats to you both!! Nice one!

@at – such a nice thing you did, visiting your friend. I’ve a small bunch of mates who, even thought we don’t see each other so often, click right back into friendship-mode when we do hook up. True friendship.

3 things to be grateful for last week include…:

    1. Big Saturday brunch with sister and her family, my (step)grandkids and lovely husband followed by a hike up a hill with 4 dogs

    2. That it was actually sunny in Belfast during the above activity 😉

    3. That my mum is in much better form after having a pretty rough time with her asthma…joined us for dinner last night and is like a new person!

Complacency has caught up. Weight this morning 138.6lbs. That’s 5lbs up from my lowest.

Congratulations @fatrabbit and @steve toon taxi driver. Well deserved results.

    Off to buy that shed.

I’m not in this Challenge (but am continuing to fast :)) I have left a note for the Junesters though at the end of last month’s Challenge thread. x

    Day 10 FD Akron OH.
So all the over indulging and yes complacency @strawberriesandcream has caught up with me, I’m about 4 pounds up from my lowest recorded weight. This is the very top of my happy weight range but I’m not happy about it 🙁 so stepping out of maintenance mode and back into active weight loss mode.
So thankful for this forum keeping me accountable.
@xrox hang in there, don’t beat yourself up. Negativity will only drag us down, we can’t change what happened yesterday, however today is a whole new animal with lots of opportunity for success. Let’s celebrate how far we’ve all come already, then hunker down and get back at it. We all have to be good to ourselves, attitude determines altitude 99% of the time.
Adding myself to the pocket fasters. I know what works and I’m going to do it 🙂

    Day 10, FD

Can someone explain to me how the “whoosh” works? I think I’ve read every post on the subject, but I still don’t understand.

    thanks!

    Day 10, Gozo, Malta, FD

Today I weighed again at 67.1 kilos up a kilo from Saturday. I did eat fish and chips Saturday night and Chinese food yesterday.

Today is a fast day of 700 calories. I’m having a nice baked fish with salad this evening.

My daughter got delayed in separating today by technicalities of bank regarding property.

I’m babysitting to my two granddaughters and one of them is sick poor dear. I am giving her medicine as required as she has some fever too.

Anyway I hope to get down by a couple of kilos before our holiday on 27 of this month.

Have a great Monday everyone. Onwards and downwards.

    Day 10 – USA (Illinois) – NFD

Woke up to no internet this morning, and in the process of resetting the modem and router, discovered my main computer won’t even turn on. We had a huge lightening strike hit about 4 a.m. (Power surge, had to reset all the clocks) so fear this almost 3 year old computer is fried. Ugh… it was plugged into a surge protector, but we all know they aren’t foolproof. At least wi-fi is now working, and I’m on my iPad.

Busy day today. Will lose a pound today giving my regular pint of blood, then a P.E.O. Meeting, Choral Society rehearsal tonight.

I’m supporting all you Monday fasters today!

    Onward and downward!

Hi folks, day 10. FD today!

    2nd post

@penz – there are several good explanations of the “whoosh”, you might want to try one of these:
    http://leanmuscleproject.com/how-whooshes-impact-your-weight-loss/
    http://100down.org/the-whoosh-effect/
    http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/fat-loss/of-whooshes-and-squishy-fat.html/

The short version goes something like this:
You eat at a calorific deficit and your body goes “great, I’ll empty all this lovely fat out of this fat cell and burn it off”. But, because your body is sneaky and always trying to be efficient, it says “what shall I do with this empty cell where I was storing all this fat, best not get rid of it in case I need to store some more fat in future”. It doesn’t want to get rid of the fat cell completely, as it might need it again, but it might collapse or get out of shape if it’s left empty, so your body goes “I’ll just fill that up with water to keep it nice and ready if I need it again”. So, from a scale perspective you see no difference as you are storing equivalent water weight to the fat weight you lost. Eventually after a period of not needing the fat cell for new fat storage after all, your body has a clearout and flushes the water out of the fat cell and you see a sudden shift on the scale overnight (or over a couple of days). You might also notice you go to the bathroom more over those days just before a whoosh or that your fat gets squishy as it’s actually mainly water. So you are losing fat nice and steadily in line with your calorie deficit, but the actual weight loss is delayed because of the water. So you might see 2, 3 or even 4 weeks of eating really well and sticking to your calorie allowance but no shift on the scales. Then the 2/3/4lbs you could expect to lose in that time all come off in one go over 1 or 2 days.

I sometimes think of it like my friend who is a hoarder who keeps empty boxes when she buys new things and starts using the things she’s bought. She puts the boxes in the cupboard “in case she needs the storage” and ends up filling them up with other stuff. Every so often she has a spring clean/clear out and empties out the boxes full of junk and suddenly there’s a lot less in her wardrobe.

Does that make any more sense?

Day 10 California USA NFD (?)

Good morning Everyone! I did an initially unplanned FD yesterday when I got busy during the early part of the day and didn’t eat, so decided to continue. I’m still trying to decide whether to do a second FD today and maybe do a 3rd on Thursday. I have a high school reunion at the end of next week and I wouldn’t mind losing an extra pound before then. I dropped from 65.6 to 65 this morning, thanks to yesterday’s FD.

@strawberriesandcream, from what I’ve read, Marmite is similar to Vegemite but perhaps sweeter? I’m going to order some of that to try as well. From reading reviews of both on Amazon, it sounds like if you like one, you’re likely to enjoy the other. I’m hoping to find something else to put it on other than the high calorie bread type products. And butter!

@liathanail you description of a whoosh sounds very plausible. Weight loss for me often works just like that.

@songbirdme, I hope your computer isn’t actually fried. That would be terrible for a computer that’s only 3 years old. I went through resetting my router last week because it wasn’t recognizing my username or password when I tried to log into it. Resetting the passwords on all our devices and Echos was a real pain. I’m glad it’s finally done.

Good luck to everyone who’s fasting today. (Or trying to eat mindfully on a NFD.)

    Day 10 (already?) – USA – NFD

@liathanail, that was a great graphic (I have a cartoon head) explaining the whoosh effect. On the subject of glucose burning vs. fat burning, Dr. Jason Fung also had an explanation of your body having 2 compartments: the refrigerator, easily accessible, where sugar and carbs are consumed and the harder-to-get-to freezer, where your body fat is stored. Your efficient body reaches for what is easily accessible to burn (sugar, carbs) but if you eliminate them, then your body unlocks the freezer and reaches into it to grab your body fat to burn. I like that explanation. @iaminthefuture, good luck on your journey! @Strawberriesandcream, glad to hear the progress with your dad’s digs and would like to suggest you try a substitute bread like rosemary coconut flour bread or sandwich bread which recipes are on Ketoconnect on YouTube.@Dykask, your daughter might love the low carb chocolate ice cream on the same website as above (I’m not getting paid for this, I promise!). @at, you are a true BFF! @belfastsink, good news about your mom!

Minnesota USA – I am late to this party – but will join for the rest of the month. I was using the FD from Jan-Mar and my group sort of fell apart as did my FD journey. I have gained about 3-4 lbs back after about 12 lbs loss and want my journey on losing weight back. It is so much better to have support. Today is a FD for me – the first in a long time…so wish me luck! I am excited – I am about 50 lbs overweight – so here I go.

My sweetie is undergoing surgery on Thursday and he has to fast (clear liquids) Wednesday, so I’m making him some Dr. Fung bone broth in the crockpot (thanks to the pocketeer who suggested this cooking method!). Wednesday I will fast with him in solidarity.

@jmh44: your weekend sounds kind of fun…

@xrox: You’re gaining muscle, getting leaner, stronger, healthier. That is a good thing, not a bad thing. You’re going in the right direction. Remember, when the zombie apocalypse comes, you’ll be able to fight them off or at least outrun them. 🙂

@debster251: Spent yesterday riding our bicycles in the Valles Caldera National Preserve and saw so many butterflies! They were the dark orange ones…not sure what they’re called, but they flew around our heads as we biked. It filled me with a feeling of gratitude (new week new gratitude!) for having the time and health to enjoy the mountains.

@liathanail: So is it true we can’t actually get rid of our fat cells and they just sit there filling up with/emptying water and fat forever? I remember reading it a long time ago and it made me sad.

TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER!! GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!

Thank you @liathanail – that made perfect sense. I also now know (some 40+ years later!!!) why a primary school teacher I once had said fat cells never ever disappear. (I lived in fear since!) And thanks @metatauta too – the fridge / freezer analogy worked for me.

Hang in there @adorabubble; it’s my FD too. Add another supporting soul to your resolve today!

Day 10: Gloucestershire, UK: NFD, again.

Day 10 Massachusetts USA FD Started the day with a yoga class, it’s one of the few exercises I can do with MS. I won’t be eating between breakfast and dinner. That’s very different from how I used to do the 5/2 but it’s working for me this way, even though I get quite hungry. It makes me appreciate food more. My husband is making a lean pork and vegetable stir-fry tonight with cauliflower rice. Yum! I see I have lots of Fasters for company today.

I am so sorry to here about your doggie! I am a dog lover and know how much our animals can mean to us! I prefer to call them babies! Hope things work out for your boss. It sounds like you have been hit hard. Keep your chin up. Things will get better. I am just down the road from you in Amarillo, TX. It is about a 4 hour drive. We visit Albuquerque frequently. Have relatives that live off Tramway. Love the mountains! My husband and son like playing the golf courses there. Sandia Casino is one of my favorite!

Ordered vegemite from Amazon. We shall see. Recommendation to eat on butter so not a fast day food? I laughed out loud at confusion for people who are trying to sort out US cooking. We are somewhat 🎶 singular with measurements here. Whenever I’m converting are use Google quite a bit. We are a big world.

All my best to all of you.

There’s a lot of debate about whether fat cells ever get destroyed once they have been emptied of fat. Most common thinking seems to be that the minimum number you will retain (regardless of whether they are full or empty) is pretty much fixed by the end of puberty/early adulthood and although they may get emptied and collapse so they physically occupy less space they never disappear. Also if you gain a lot of weight as an adult your body can happily create lots of new ones.

The filling with water is supposed to be a short term thing to maintain the structural integrity of the empty cell for easy refill. Once your body susses out there’s no replacement fat stores it needs to accommodate it will let the cell collapse.

All of this definitely needs more research though as a lot of it is based on a couple of studies.

@penz hanging in there!!!! Sending positive thoughts your way!!!!
