  • Hi

I have tried and failed like most of you and sticking to some diet, yet for some reason falter or cheat with me hence no weight loss. I have watched Michael over and over with the 5.2 and actually used this information about the other possibility of helping with dementia etc in a paper I wrote as my mum suffered from dementia. I recently have had the most heartbreaking time, and now just lost my mum, I am at my lowest ebb, and extremely overweight…(120lb to lose) if you guys can help, advise me on my first day of my journey on 5.2 to hopefully a positive new life, I will be in your debt for life…sorry to rabble but this is my last chance…

hi Rainy05 and welcome to the forums

I am very sorry that you have been through so much, and of course loosing your mum must be the most painful heartache, I know because I lost mine just 4 years ago and I still miss her so much…

You will get support on here and encouragement, and if you feel you are ready to embark on this journey then go for it! its not complicated, just choose 2 days you want to fast, any at all, plan your meals for those in advance, and of course look around this forum for good advice, helpful tips etc… the other thing to remember is the amount of cals to consume on normal days, ie the remaining 5 days you’ll eat what you like, there is a tool on top of this page, unde the how? section, which will calculate these, its called TDEE.

that is it basically, please post on here to let us know how you get on, please don’t be alone, we’ll be here every step of the way, hang in there hun… sending you a big virtual hug 🙂 take care and good luck!

    Angie xx

Hi, so sorry to read about your mum. Heartbreaking, and you need the time to grief. That can take a while, and you have to let it take it’s time, I believe…

It’s hard to advice someone you don’t know at all, I just have to say from my short experience with this diet (only been doing it for a month) I really feel I am doing something good. For me, my body and soul. By that I mean of course to eat healthier and to excercise, but with that comes another awareness.

I am one that worries about the state of the planet… I feel bad for spending money and being indulgent. Fasting makes my conscience better. I feel I don’t use up unnecessary reserves, and I “pay back” for the occacional indulgence.

Sounds pretencious maybe.. But that’s how it works for me 🙂

As a bonus I feel som much more calm. I used to have a constant feeling of unease, kind of light anxiety, which faded on the second fast day. And last but not least – I dropped a little weight 🙂

Well, I wish you good luck, and to start the process when you are ready. Just remember that food can not be your comfort… Hope to see you around this forum 🙂

I am so sorry for your loss rainy, no one will ever replace you mum and you must take time to grieve for her.
I think you are also ready for the first step of building a life for yourself. Having watched Michael’s programme you will understand this isn’t a speedy diet but a way of life to help you avoid many conditions that occur as we age and has the benefit of weight loss.
So basically its two days a week having only 500 calories, and five days a week eating normally just not in great amounts!
First thing to do is take your measurements – waist, hips, arms, neck whatever you like – and your weight.
Most of us fast on Mondays and one other day of the week. Its great to think how many people are feeling the same as you do as you try to make 500 calories fill you up!
If you try this for a couple of weeks so your body gets used to fasting, then work out your TDEE here
    http://thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-calories-on-a-non-fast-day/

you can then eat the calorie value somewhere between your BMR and TDEE to enable a good weight loss each week.
Its not a fast (fast equally speedy) diet, we are all different but once you settle into it you can lose between 1 – 2lbs per week which soon adds up.

You will find plenty of advise and support here, so one good way to spend an hour on a fast day is to read and post on the forum.

Things will get better for you given time 🙂

@rainy Hi and welcome …so sorry to read your story, You’ve had loads of advice already and when you need support and someone to ‘listen’, you’ll find loads of help on these forums.

take care and good luck with your journey.

    xx

rainy, what can I say? Very, very sorry to hear you have lost your mum. As others have said, you need time to grieve, but there will come a moment – or maybe it’s already come – when you decide to move forward.

Start 5:2 when you feel ready. If you feel unwell or still psychologically low, maybe hang on a day, a week or a month or two. Compared with many other eating plans, this one is relatively easy. Fast days need not be too hard to bear if you choose your food carefully, lean protein, lots of veggies, especially green ones. And if you start in the winter, think about soup instead of salad. On non-fast days you can afford a few treats, even the odd naughty one. In other words, REAL treats. No egg-white omelettes or cottage cheese!

As you say you have quite a bit to lose, you may well get off to a flying start. But don’t despair if you don’t, everyone is different. The only rule in 5:2 is that YOU make the rules. By trial and error, and by comparing experiences with this great bunch of posters on the forum – 5:2 does seem to attract some delightful people of both genders – you’ll discover what works for you.

You mention dementia. That is one of the big attractions for me, as are all sorts of other health benefits, which you’ll already know a bit about having read Michael’s book.

So go for it. We’re all on your side. And your mum would be proud of you.

thank you all for kind encouragement, I really do appreciate it and I take great comfort from all your kind words, I will be “leaning” on you all to help me get through this pain and my journey, I hope that’s ok and you don’t know how much this means to me it really really does, thank you from the bottom of my heart….xxx

    Morning Rainy05

I hope you are ok, just checking in on you to let you know my thoughts are with you 🙂

I am fasting today grrrrr… I may go get a couple of chickens today 🙂 and maybe a rooster… OH got 2 foxes ever the weekend, so hopefully no more attacks for now!

take care and keep us posted, I look forward to hearing on your progress 🙂 xxx

I’m so sorry for your loss.

    I’m new too.

I know the feeling of wanting a change from the inside out. Someone on here wrote something like — if you wait a year, you’ll ask yourself why didn’t I start back then? That resonates to me. I have to eat every day. I go,through life everyday. Why not be able to go to,bed every night knowing I have taken the best care of my body that I could and showing myself respect.

After a few weeks I’m starting to have that feeling that I now have invested so much that I don’t want to throw it away.

Maybe looking after yourself in this way is a method of sending love to your mom and thanking her for this gift of life.

    All the best!
