  • Welcome back Precious.
It becomes overwhelming when you don’t get on often. Must have taken you ages. I woke up at the crack of dawn (kookaburras laughing) to check on you.
BTW, I’ve never seen Neighbours. I is a very UK thing. We tend to watch BBC stuff!
    Have a happy evening/morning all
    PVE

    Hi Purple Vegie Eater

This is a first! I’m not usually still on at this time of night but there is nothing much on T.V. That sounds very posh; you tend to only watch the BBC!
Neighbours was MASSIVE at one time in Blighty.

Aka Kookaburras; we used to sing a little song at school about them – I think it must have been primary.

‘Kookaburra sits by the old gum tree
Very Merry King of the bush is he
    Laugh Kookaburra Laugh Kookaburra
    Gay your life must be’

Isn’t that sweet? and no before you ask; I have not had any of JIP!’s rum and coke!

    Now I am really going!
    ONwards and Downwards!

    Hi BooBoo,
I have a confession to make, I don’t actually count the calories on fast day or non fast days…tho’ I did check out the calories in a coffee thickshake I had yesterday – non fast day. I was shopping in the big town where they lock up trollies and you need a coin to release one. I had no coin of the right size so bought something so I could get change and a coffee thickshake beckoned. The 35g of sugar will make be think twice before I indulge again. Sticking to black tea (easy) and coffee (not so easy) looked the way to go but I have decided your pearls are right and I should have one coffee with milk in the morning and one when I get home from work. I don’t think it will derail things.
BTY the scales and still going down, not so quickly as in the first two weeks but my jeans are going to need a belt soon. I did once own size 9 jeans about 30 odd years ago. I was really enjoying breast feeding my first baby, I was sleep deprived but eating huge meals and weighing less every day as my daughter gained. My mother in law (who tried but didn’t successfully breastfeed) told me I had to wean her, she’s dragging you down. Of course I ignored her.

    Second verse:
Kookaburra sits on the electric wire,
Jumping up and down with his pants on fire.
    Laugh, kookaburra, laugh,
Kookaburra, gay your life must be.
For the uninitiated, they are INCREDIBLY noisy. And with the sulphur crested cockatoos screeching you cannot stay asleep. The beautiful magpies’ song and the whip of the whip bird are drowned out. Are, living in a eucalypt forest is such a joy!
BBC programs are shown all the time on our ABC. Very popular here in Aus. (not Oz, that’s where Dorothy lived 😉 ) I always found it amusing ow keen on Neigbours the Brits were.
    Happy Friday 13th for all
    PVE

Pleased to hear you ignored your MILs misadvice re breastfeeding all those years ago, Violet May. I went right down to 52kg feeding number 2 and chasing goats and cows around a farm. Looked fabulous! Women are meant to put on lots of weight while pregnant so they CAN loose it all feeding the baby.
It is safer to work out what calories you are having on fast days. My hub made an Excel chart of our favourite foods. Also referred to the 5:2 books to understand. I was really shocked how many calories are in foods I thought were low. I now always read the back of any packets I buy and check the per 100g as well as the single serve total. Even comparing different plain rice crackers is interesting. Every single calorie counts when you are trying to stay below 400.
I read some soup packets yesterday and was horrified by how much sugar and salt was in them. Went home and defrosted my own veg soup instead. I know it is super low with only good healthy veg.
    Cheers

PVE – we are having pelicans visit here, I haven’t heard them make a noise but I suppose they do. They just look big when standing around in the paddock and prehistoric.

    Hi Metchick
Congratulations on the disappearing you. That’s fantastic. My erratic scales are driving me crazy, but I do feel much better and somewhat lighter, but it may be wishful thinking ……

    Hi Cheeseplease…
Just ignore the higher figures and only believe the lowest. It can only make you feel good!
Talking about cheese….after being good and still at 59kg, I had tomato, ham, chutney, cheese and parsley on toast for breakfast. Delicious. I love 5:2 for allowing me to feast.
A happy and feeling much better PVE 🙂

Good morning all from cold, wet and gloomy Adelaide Hills. It’s 8.40am here and not much happening yet in our house.

Interesting Violet May about your MIL saying your breastfed baby was dragging you down – I got similar response when my daughter was about 6 months old. At that point I weighed about 50kg at 5’5″ (abt 5kg down from usual), light but hardly emaciated! (Just re-read, sorry about mixed units).

Precious, good to hear from you again – this is such a busy thread, I usually have a lot of reading by Thursday morning, not having looked at the site since Sunday night. Thanks for pointing to recipe from earlier; good stuff!

No weight loss to report because I haven’t been on the scales – focussing on light wholesome foods until shake dreaded cold.

    O&D Ladies!

to PBooBoo, Speedy, Piper, Hermaj et al: sorry to have been away so long. Have missed you all. Life has been totally nuts for the last several weeks. Needed to head up to north to fetch a grown child whose life got tossed around a bit. Has now moved in with me and glad to have him (good company) but its been a challenge to fit two households into one with extra “stuff” and an extra kitty to boot (that’s a story all of its own).

Had not dared go near the scales as I just couldn’t handle any bad news on top of so much other stuff to deal with. Have been eating reasonably but no genuine fasting days. Was relieved to find I had actually dropped a couple of pounds (rare for me to have stress work in my favor rather than the other way around).

Anyway, just wanted to say hey and will do better to try to keep up and stay in touch. Am determined to start back on my stairs routine as I have done zip in the way of exercise. I needed the motivation hearing you all working so hard.

hey Luvto, we missed you! Sorry about your son’s troubles- (I’m assuming he’s your son). Glad he’s got you. We all go through rough places, don’t worry so much about fasting. When you are ready, it’ll still be there. Glad you’re back.

LUVTCOOK, good to see you back, we have missed you on ‘Lose 2 lb per week – join Jojo in this quest’ also. Sorry to hear you have been going through so much stress, glad that at least it didn’t pile more pounds on. Hoping things start to look up for you 🙂

    Welcome back Luvtcook.
Adult kids are a constant maintenance, aren’t they? He is lucky to have you.
It is “Are you ok?” Day here in Aust. I just happened to have rung all my grown up kids to touch base anyway. So important to keep the channels open so they know they are loved.
Well done keeping the weight down during this time of stress.
    PVE 🙂

Hi All, just popping in with an update.
I have been working very hard, doing lots of exercise and trying all sorts of foods especially low carb.
Result since I left your thread on 26 th April -12 lbs.
hope you are all doing well, this is such a busy thread, sorry I don’t have time to read it regularly but I promise to update monthly and have a quick speed read.
    Good luck and best wishes

    Hi JIP!

We haven’t heard from you yet this morning; are you lying in bed with a hangover?!!

If you haven’t been on here yet; you won’t have seen my last post to you last night!

I should have said the rum was working your fingers for you too; they were definitely more than a bit tiddly! Good for you!

Anyways, my husband had a look at a map today and you are right; Colwyn Bay is right up at the north end of Wales and you and Brecon are right down in the South. I had no idea Wales was such a big country. Duh…..!!

We would happily have driven over to you and come in for a coffee but it seems like it might be as long a journey as driving to north Wales from here!

My husband is going to check on a route planner later today; is Brecon the nearest major place to where you reside?

    BooBooxx

Have just had a quick peek at the posts and it is lovely to see one from you LUVTCOOK. We have missed you posting on here.

I am sorry you and your relative have had your travails; life is rarely straight forward for any of us. No wonder something as relatively trivial as your weight watching went out the window but the great thing is; when you weren’t actually worrying about it you went and lost some anyway! Well done; when I am super stressed the first thing I reach for is food/drink(!).

Getting back into some exercise will help you to feel as if you are keeping your hand in so to speak and when you feel ready; you can get back on the LOACA WAGON with the rest of us.

Remember LUVTCOOK; it’s a big old wagon but it’s strong because there are a lot of us!

    ONwards and Downwards!
    BooBooxx

Good afternoon Boo and LOACA. I have read back my threads from last night Boo, I should not mix 5-2 threads with rum and cokes, what I meant to say BooBoo that your picture of me is distorted, not sure if this corrected me.
Boo, again did you understand my answer to the (how many R and C’s have I had. I said I only have two hands meaning anything after 10 fingers I cannot count. In the cold light of day all my chatting sounds a load of rubbish.
Regarding Colwyn I have just read your thread too, it is along way from me. It’s almost in England LOL
It would be nice to meet up let me know when you are going to Colwyn Bay it still could be an option if we can arrange it.
I promise not to come on these threads when I am drowning my sorrows. Lost my bowls match and gained 1.3/4 lbs. well I needed a reason. LOL

    Hi JIP!

Don’t be daft JIP! You were very funny as always. You couldn’t write a rubbish post if you tried and I am NEVER insincere matey.

And yes I did get the ‘you couldn’t count after the tenth one’ joke!

I’m sorry you have gained a bit but JIP! it seems all our weights fluctuate simply because we are females. V.annoying I know; join the club.

    ‘Speak later’
So it’s ONwards and Downwards again for you this weekend…..
    TeeHeeee:-)
    BooBooxx

Hi nice to hear from LUVTCOOK and Jojo keep up the good work Jojo, LUVTCOOK kids a hey, Arm ache when they are little and heart ache when they are grown up. We are there for them no matter the age. JIP

Good to hear from you again, LUVTCOOK. Sorry to hear that you are not having a very easy time at the moment but it sounds as though you are coping well with an extra household and an additional moggy – UK slang for cat, hope it’s not a rude word in your part of the world 🙂 I’m sure you are looking after them wonderfully and they are loving being there with you – but don’t forget to look after yourself, too.

    Hi JIP,

I see you are from Colwyn Bay – just like our very nice downstairs neighbour here in North London. She is bilingual and went to school and uni in North Wales. Are you also bilingual?

Hi my name is Jenny and I am off a certain age. I have only just started the 5:2 program and although I am enjoying it as a way of life the weight is not coming off rapidly. This is probably due to now being in serious menopause.
I am not sure if you still talk about the program or just know each other well but I thought I would post anyway.
I live in the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and often have kookaburras and cockatoos outside. I look out on trees and greenery.
Anyway I look forward to reading more of your posts and participating in this program for life. I have at least 10 kilos to lose and want to see how I feel then.

    Hi jennymc,

    welcome to the forum!

We talk about the program, we talk about other things, people are coming in all the time, don’t be a stranger! We’ll enjoy getting to know you!

    Hi Ladies,

I’m 48, but went through an early (natural) menopause at 41. This was a huge psychological shock to say the least. I immediately felt old and barren after just coming out of my 30’s…which I absolutely loved and revelled in as a woman, mother and spouse. I have struggled a bit in my 40’s but have nevertheless persevered to ‘enjoy’ my menopause. The only pesky symptom was night sweats, but that was alleviated by going back on the pill (recommended by my Dr. until I turn 50 to also protect my bones). And, oh yeah, there also was the battle with my weight.

My hope with 5:2 WoL is that my general health (and weight) will be fantastic as I head towards my 50s. I hear 50 is the new 40! haha. Here’s hoping I love my 50s as much as I did my 30s 🙂

Hello All Ladies Of A Certain Age!

How are you all doing? Well I hope and getting the results you want.
I didn’t get to the end of the list the other day when I was posting; so I’m sorry to have missed Metchick, Cheeseplease and Lorraine11.
And some of you lost weight so a group Congratulations to all of you!

This is supposed to be a quick post 🙂 as we are going to have lunch then go spending money; my favourite Saturday pastime. This house is a bit like a money pit….

Hello and Welcome to this thread: jennymc and EatSleepSki

I’m glad piper has already welcomed you jenny; yes we do very much still talk about the programme and are happy to try to help you with any questions you might have. Obviously we chat about other things; like clothes getting looser and encouraging milestones like that!
We’ve just been talking about kookaburras; how lovely to be able to look out onto them.

Good luck with your first week and please tell us how you get on.

Hi EatSleepSki – No prizes for knowing what you are into!
This is the only weight loss programme that has enabled me to lose weight for decades; as my weight only went in one direction for that entire period. This was despite all my efforts to the contrary; watching what I ate and exercising a considerable amount.

If you have read back any of the earlier posts; you will find countless examples of LOACA’s who really thought that this would not work for them because nothing else did. And you will find that the vast majority have been absolutely delighted to find their fears ungrounded.

Getting involved on here also helps to motivate people when they falter or start comparing their results with that of others.
We look forward to hearing how you do.

Oh and yes, 50 is definitely the new 40!

Back tomorrow when I will have more time.
Have a lovely weekend all – be good
    ONwards and Downwards!

Hi hermajtomomi, you have got it wrong, I am from near Cardiff South Wales, our lovely BooBoo asked if I lived near Colwyn Bay ( North Wales) because she is going to be visiting there sometime this summer and wondered if we could meet up.
I am ashamed to say I do not speak welsh, it’s is more North and West that have kept the welsh speaking tradition going. we were taught welsh in school but if we did not have parents who spoke it at home it just died. It is a shame. JIP.

Welcome jennymc, 5-2 is the place to be on BooBoo threads with LOACA, you will enjoy your journey as well.

Hello all LOACA. I’m back from my 4-day trip to bonnie Scotland. I don’t think I did any severe damage food wise but did partake of a few G & Ts and glasses of wine. I started with such strong resolve, not having had a drink for nearly 4 weeks, but soon tumbled off the wagon! I’m now too scared to get on the scales. I fasted on the day before I went, and am having a fasting day today, so tomorrow I will maybe summon up the courage to weigh!

Smiffy, glad you enjoyed your mini break, I am sure you will not have done too much damage and we have to live, that’s what’s nice about 5-2 we can take control. JIP

Hello BooBoo, hope you are having a nice evening. Our LOACA thread is expanding I am having keeping up with everyone. JIP

Whoops! Sorry about that, JIP. I have a very dear Welsh friend – she and her hubby were witnesses at our wedding – who originates from Carmarthen. Like you, she studied Welsh at school and then she went on to a Welsh uni but confesses to knowing only a few bits and pieces of the language. It looks and sounds fiendishly difficult and I would imagine it can only truly be grasped through speaking, for example through having Welsh-speaking parents who use it at home, as you suggest.

I’ve just remembered, way back when dinosaurs still walked the Earth I was a baby reporter doing a holiday relief job on the local paper in Ammanford. The young couple I lodged with were Welsh-speakers but they made a conscious decision only to speak English while I was there, which was very sweet of them and their 8-year-old son.

Hi everyone and welcome Jennymc. Where I live we have kookaburras and magpies but have red-tailed black cockatoos instead of sulphur crests-not quite so noisy but still plenty of early morning racket if trying to sleep in. My brother and SIL live in Balwyn.

Precious and PVE, your potions are surely magic 🙂 I still have some way to complete recovery but definitely feel better and planning for work tomorrow and fasting as usual. As I have been sticking close or under TDEE I hope that Wednesday’s weigh-in will show less of me.

I reported a few weeks ago that my work pants were looser and now winter has really arrived, there’s plenty of room for thermals underneath. I tried on some size 16s which had languished at the back of the wardrobe the other day and could get them done up but still a bit firm for comfort 🙁

    Have a good week everyone
    O&D!

    Good work, NickyF
Pleased to hear you are on the mend. We are improving every day here too. Back in the same bed and less coughing. My throat still causes issues during the night.
Glad you are fitting into smaller pants. Try wearing the tighter ones around in the mornings (when you are smaller) to give yourself a moral boost and get used to pulling the tum in again. I was interested in how I let it all go when I was feeling sick and slipped on some older and bigger loose slacks. Felt so frumpy I had to change back to my tight ones to go and get the paper.
Keep warm and good luck at work tomorrow.
    PVE 🙂

    Hi PeciousBooBoo,

Thanks for the welcome to your thread. Yes, I love to ski. I am from Brisbane in Australia and there is no snow in the Australian Alps at the moment. We are having a very balmy winter here and a very poor start to our already short ski season. We mostly ski in Canada though and thankfully hadn’t booked to ski in Oz this year.

After two weeks of following this ‘lifestyle’ I have lost 1.3 kg (a bit under 3lbs). I’m amazed! And even though the numbers on the scales have dropped I feel like I have lost more than the numbers say. I haven’t taken my measurements yet, which I should probably do. I exercise a lot too and therefore wasn’t expecting any great drop on the scales, so I’m pleasantly surprised!

I’m happy to say my progress has been relatively easy…it’s actually been a relief to have only 2 days of calorie restriction rather than every day of the week when I have tried to loose weight in the past. I was also amazed that fasting until 3pm was not as bad as I thought it would be.

    Happy fasting, ESSki 🙂

to hermaj, Booboo, franfit, JIP et al: thanks for the kind words and encouragement. Things are definately sorting themselves out, and all in all going much better. Son seems happier, cats are getting along, and other than piles of stuff we can’t figure where to put I can’t complain.

I am trying to stack the deck in my favor a bit. Before I disappeared off the face of the earth (or at least the LOACA forum) I had been weighing “officially” weekly and unofficially more often than that. With my weight loss as moderate as it has been am thinking of trying weighing every 2 weeks. That may keep me from being too obsessive about the weight loss and trying to tweak it everytime I don’t get the lb I am looking for. We’ll see.

Before signing off, “hi” to all the new folks I have not met yet. This place is hoppin!

    ‘Hi’ to you too, LUVTCOOK.

I like your username….I love to Eat! the most (then, sleep and ski, haha).

I definitely believe that we are a slave to our scales. The numbers on the scales seem to mean so much more than our tape measurements. I am thinking of weighing every month as I know I get so disheartened when I see a minimal drop on the scales. I am not a numbers person; I refuse to count calories and yet I still focus too much on the reading of the scale. I have to keep reminding myself I am after ‘body fat’ loss not weight loss per se and that reveals itself in the mirror and in how my clothes are fitting.

    Happy fasting, ESSki 🙂

So much for sitting in the sun enjoying Sunday….our sewerage has blocked up (ongoing problem with the Water Authority and their main line 🙁 ) so I’m holding the fort waiting for a repair team. If no luck, we will have to evacuate. So much for living in a big city!!! Better off back on the farm in charge of our own system!
To keep busy, we are looking into wood pellet heaters which are new to Australia. Do any of my European or American mates have any experience with them? Cost of use air pollution (should be minimal) Features needed? Effectiveness? Any pitfalls?
    Thanks girls
    A very frustrated PVE 🙁
PS This IS Fast Diet related as we are both MUCH colder this winter in our new skinny bodies!

EatSleepSki I love your idea about weighing only once a month. Not sure I can wait that long but I only do once a week currently. So many people have commented about losing inches before the scale moves, its a very interesting phenomenon that I hope gets some research done to get more data as to why. Numbers on a scale are meaningless but we all tend to latch onto them because it shows progress (or so we think). The way we fit in our clothes is so much more concrete than a number, I hope everyone keeps that in mind and incorporates trying on tight clothes whenever they weigh.

    Dave

    Dave,
I think the other thing that is interesting is the places fat falls off first. We found neck, shoulders, elbows appeared way before the waist. In fact, the tummy fat seems to be the very last to go (if ever.) Skin and bone is the new good looking body.
I still think, and husband agrees, that we only put on weight because we didn’t weigh ourselves for years.
I had never needed to diet, but knew how much I weighed. Only in my late 30s did this change. Now in my 60s I know if I don’t keep a close eye on it (ok, once a week would be fine) I would gain again. I just find it easier to pop on the scales just to be sure and if I am inching up (so to speak) I make a conscious effort to eat less on non fast days. We also found when we were losing weight it was great to actually record the lowest weight each week on a graph. A visual representation of your success is SO rewarding. Then suddenly you are “doing a JIP” and calling out loudly for smaller sizes in clothes shops! 😉
    Cheers PVE

I have been following the Dukan diet for the past 3 years and successfully lost and maintained my weight, but I have now finally got bored with having a burger and egg nearly everyday for breakfast and no carbs, so hence I have cheated and need to lose about 10lbs. It is a constant battle every day just to try and maintain your eight never mind losing as well, which I put down to my age. I’m a bit sceptical about this diet, can you really eat cake and lose weight? I intend to start tomorrow and exercise on my 2 fasting days and will see how it goes.

    Hi Tallulah53
I don’t think you can ever get away with eating too much cake when you are older. But 5:2 does work as a health measure and, if you are careful on other days too, you lose weight.
Eating 500 cal on fast days and excessively on the other days, you can’t expect to loose masses of weight. If you eat only your normal daily calorie needs on the other days, you will lose weight. My husband and I lost 55g between us in a year. Not bad for a couple who had never dieted before.
The biggest benefit is you can eat whatever you like as long as you stick to the total calorie intake. eg You could choose 3/4 bottle of wine on a fast day and nothing else. You’d be very hungry though. If you chose some lean protein and veg instead you will feel sustained. It worked for us as one of us (not saying who) is a VERY fussy eater so normal diets would just not work. And you can get through fast days knowing you can eat anything the next day. Amazingly, you rarely do!
    All the best
    PVE 🙂

Thanks PVE, glad to hear it works for you, I’m quite enthusiastic at the moment and determined which always helps! Going to make a batch of veggie soup for my 2 fasting days, wine is my downfall so I will definitely steer clear on my fasting days.
    Best wishes and happy dieting.
    Tallulah

Wine is my downfall too Tallulah53. The only way for me was to give it up completely, and I surprised myself that it didn’t worry me too much. I did have quite a few glasses while I was away last week, but was very pleased to see this morning when I finally felt brave enough to get on the scales, that I am only 1lb up after having a fasting day yesterday. JIPWGP is right in a recent post – the 5.2 is very flexible and days when you feel you have had more than you should (be it cake or wine!) can be balanced out by a fasting day soon after. I think the thing is to enjoy those days without feeling guilty, knowing you can put it right. Good luck! Onwards and downwards, to quote our Leader.

Smiffy, the jury is still out I’m afraid, I am WW like I have said before many times and I will be watching my weight for the rest of my life but with 5-2 it looks like I can get back from a two holiday and get back to it again with ease. I also like the idea of having a day out and not thinking (those scales are going up in the morning.
With 5- 2 being new for me only time will tell. It j?usts feels right. I know I am awful for watching the scales but I never get on them until the day after I get back so that the water retention I know I have after a flight has had time to go. I can put on 6,7 lb on a two week holiday and I have to fight 3 months some times to get it off.
With 5-2 it should be a doddle (easy). Time will tell.
Weight Watchers recommend 26 propoints = about 13000-14000 calories plus another 49 pp = about 24000 calories spread over a week that you can have in any form of treads. I always found that this was too many calories for me, with the medication I am taking, steroids, these threads are also something that makes us all want to keep each other going. Happy fasting or not as the case may me. OW’s and DW’s JIP

Thanks Smiffy, I wish I could give it up completely, but when the sun is shining it’s so lovely to sit outside with a nice glass of Rose, but if I don’t buy any I won’t be able to drink it. That’s good advice to fast after a day of eating and drinking more than I should, I will definitely do that. My diet is for a holiday I’m hoping to book, but am caught up in the passport madness and still waiting for it to arrive, fingers crossed it will arrive and I can go on holiday minus 10lbs! Best wishes and have a good day.

    Hi everyone
I have been reading all the recent posts – particularly about wine – and find myself agreeing with everything being said. I find it hard to resist white wine or rose when the sun is shining too! Keep up all the good advice – I just thought I would say a big thank you for all the support that is offered on this great forum.

    Xx

Hi my 1.51 thread about calories and WW propoints should have read ( in any form of treats. Sorry JIP

Cheeseplease and Talullah you are girls after my own heart. Sitting outside on a hot day with a glass of something chilled – white or pink – is my idea of heaven! Unfortunately this, with a bowl of Kettle Chips/ other high calorie nibbles, are what got me in this state in the first place. At the moment I’m making do with Diet Coke but once I lose some of this weight I fully intend to enjoy the odd glass in moderation. The problem is, I’m a bit ‘all or nothing’ and difficult for me to have a glass or two without drinking the whole bottle!

Hello All Ladies Of A Certain Age!

Wow you’ve been busy again, which is great and I have another catch up to do!

    But first Hi JIP!

Re-attempting to meet up the week after next (we hope to drive down this Friday all being well). We looked at a route finder and it’s a 3 1/2 hour drive down to Brecon! from Colwyn Bay. It wouldn’t be so bad if it was a motorway but it’s all small ‘minor’ roads; so effectively that would be a 7 hour round trip down to see you.
I am very fond indeed of you JIP! but not that fond:-)!!

Am I right in thinking that you and hubby get by without a car? I know you talk a lot about getting the bus places.

Do you have any relatives/friends up that way that you could go and visit for a night/weekend?

It seems we might be so near and yet so far!

    BooBooxx

Smiffy, it’s why bottles are the size they are! And me …….
