  • Hi Violet May
Poor you. No stairs nearby. I lived in that situation for many years.
Now, back in the city, I have numerous opportunities every day to run up stairs.
We even live in a two storey house now and I run up and down.
It amazes me at stores and railway stations how many young people choose to go up escalators when they would be so much healthier if they simply went upstairs at every opportunity.
According to Michael’s Fast Fitness book, running up stairs is the Queen of exercise (my words). It is the fastest way to burn off calories in a very short time.
Maybe your husband could build a staircase in the middle of one of the paddocks? The sheep could use it too!
You give away your nationality with the term “chooks”. Our UK mates think it a very odd word. We know it is our affectionate label for chickens.
Keep up the good work with fasting and keeping us entertained.
    Cheers
    PVE

    Hi PVE,

I had a stairs brainwave after reading your comment, during my lunch break today I will investigate the stairs up to the flats over the shops in the Little Town where I work. I think my husband is more likely to suggest a dam bank as a better place to exercise, his carpentry skills are not much better than mine. I may even try the dam bank near the house, that will entertain last year’s poddy calves – and any neighbours who happen to see me. I bucket raised two calves, they are nearly a year old now and would enjoy some mad running up and down dam banks though they will be hoping it ends with some hay to eat.

My mother had chickens, even when we moved to Greater London, probably the only egg producing chickens for miles and miles and miles. I’m a transplant and thriving.
    better hit the road now,
    Violet May

Sorry. Cows, not sheep. All bovines, though.
Have fun running up and down the dam. I guess the low water at present means a steeper climb.
    šŸ˜‰ PVE

well, I’ve been thinking about that bodywear garment, Speedy

…mostly they are not something for everyday, although millions of people wear them all the time and swear by them. You need one that is built like a leotard. Other wise they roll off the waist, either up or down, depending on whether it is a top half or a bottom half. So, don’t do halves! I like to sew and I keep thinking that you could design your own–don’t laugh, you could go into business for yourself and make a fortune!

I keep remembering when my daughter was about 12 years old, taking her bra shopping. She had developed quite well and wanted an iron-maiden type bra for gym, so she didn’t feel bad about jumping around. The saleswoman wanted to put her in a sexy type garment. At 12! I was pretty ticked off.- This is not an inherited trait šŸ™ .. but I still know what you feel like.

Shop around, but no halfsies !

Thanks Piper šŸ™‚ I currently use a xl swimming costume but only pull it up till under my boobs. Bit odd but it works for me to an extent. Only the material isn’t strong enough really!
But thanks for your reply. I’ve seen the halfies and indeed thought they would never stay up like they do on the adverts on me – although they are sometimes pictured on slightly larger, rounded people, they are not real people like me with sweaty rolls lol! (Too much info I know lol!)

PBB, goodness what a thing to be said to your poor mother. Blimey. That’s quite dreadful. I know that sort of comment though. Certainly it’s very interesting how our minds / emotions can affect our physical health. I believe that’s certainly true. Very interesting subject.

But as also physical beings I think things can just go wrong sometimes.
The advice to think positive etc. is good advice but it doesn’t mean a person can -or if they do – that it will cure the illness.
But this is probably not the forum for this subject. So … onwards and downwards! šŸ™‚

Good morning BooBoo, yes we have gyp in Welsh Wales too, my JIP is my initials but my hubby says I give him gyp. I am fasting today. Happy fasting. JIP alias gyp. LOL

PVE, I loved your message I am 67 and I can always be seen running for the bus in my case we have 3 an hour they are 5 to the hour, half past and twenty to the hour, but not always on time and I can find my self running because I can see at the last stop (a straight road) and run to get to the next stop before it gets there, running along side it for the last 30 yards or so, with my hand sticking out into the road, there is no way the driver is going to miss this little old lady running for her life to get on his but. LOL, I have done this since I stopped working 10 years ago when I was 3 and 4 stone heavier. I do drive but I like the bus and only take the car for weekly shop and then hubby does it most weeks for me.
I also have sleepless nights but hubby seems to get his sleepless nights on different nights. LOL
I like to get out of bed and read in the living room then when I get cold (can be anything up to hour) and then go back to bed and cwtch – up (welsh cuddle) . I find Monday night the worse perhaps because I get weighed on a Tuesday. Fasting today as I said. Melon and black tea so far. Happy fasting JIP

Hi Nicky- Ohio is in spring, so mix of beautiful days and thunderstorms. The Memorial Tournament is set for the end of the month, so everyone can see a little bit of where I’m from, well, as much as you can tell from a golf course.

Speedy- That was the point- they don’t work too well for anybody! The skinny, young girls are talking about it at work.

I agree that we can do a lot for ourselves, just by attitude and emotions, but on the other end of the spectrum, sometimes life goes places that no one ever wanted it to. I am happy that you are happier, now.

PVE- you are very light already. Do you have a goal? (and congratulations! you give us all hope). šŸ™‚

Anto, Violet, Jip, Katie, Boo and anyone else I missed, you are very much a support system for me. I hope your weekend is
full of sunshine and happy fasting!

    xxP

Hello All Ladies Of A Certain Age!

How are you all? Well, I hope. Iā€™ve been reading a few posts/threads mentioning rebounding on small trampolines and Iā€™m really hacked off because we sold my, hardly used, one at a car boot sale; just to give ourselves less to move when we moved house late last year! We sold it for peanuts tooā€¦ā€¦

Well done you JIP for just storing yours in the garage with the rumā€¦ā€¦now thereā€™s a thought – JIP drunk on the trampoline rebounding out of the garage roof and off into space!ā€¦..

Hi Purple Vegie Eater – Thank you for trying to help with my insomnia. You didnā€™t answer whether you are aiming to get below 9 stone? Let me know because if you are not then I shall retrospectively get out the MMM Award. If you are not wanting to get below the 9st mark then that will be your last chance for that special awardā€¦ā€¦Speak now or forever hold your peace – as someone said.

And a ā€˜worky-ticketā€™ is someone who is working their ticket as in ā€˜acting upā€™ or being a pain; it surely has links with people on boats who used to literally work their ticket to get to another country. I love old sayings and do my best to keep them in use.
And you reminded me; gypped does also mean you have been ā€˜doneā€™ or ripped off as you say.

And you are off for a dirty weekend! Who with? Is your husband going somewhere else?
Just kidding – Lucky you! You have just come back from a holiday; that is not fair to someone, who because we just moved recently, wonā€™t be getting one this yearā€¦ā€¦.Have a lovely time thoughā€¦.:)

Hi Violet May – We Brits love your countryā€™s affectionate name for chickens! Enjoy running up and down those damn dams!

Hi JIP! – I love the picture of you running for the bus and running along side it for the last 30yds; do the folk round there think you are mad or are they all like that?!!:-)
And do you have your pedometer in your handbag; as I suggested in the LOACAā€™s pursuit of our world domination?
Also just read your post about jeans on Cathyorkā€™s thread; you should post that on here to give us all some encouragement.

Hi Anto58 – Have you picked up your new pooch yet? Oh I do envy you; we are looking at getting our next dog but have been procrastinating a bit.
Iā€™ve forgotten already, forgive me; are you another pedometer owner? Because you will be able to clock up some steps walking your new puppy; obviously not too far for a while because their little bones are soft like babies and have just started growing.
Is it a he or a she? And what are you going to call it? And itā€™s an Andrex puppy isnā€™t it? It will be sooooo cute and cuddly.

Hi piper – We could definitely do with some sunshine around here. We bought ourselves a chair the other week where you can swing individually – well itā€™s out there all ready to go! All it needs is some sunshine so we can sit on it and watch the cattle and listen to the wildlife.

Hi Lynne1146 – How are you doing this week after that humongous bar of chocolate? Have you got yourself back on the wagon?

If LUVTCOOK was here; I would tell her about my new tea towels which have, yes youā€™ve guessed it, ā€˜love to cookā€™ printed on them. Very nice they are too.

Speaking of wildlife – we heard a Cuckoo for the very first time this morning; I mean a live one of course! That made our day and we hadnā€™t even gotten out of bed. Of course, it would be even better to see one in the flesh as they are on the endangered list and are reducing in numbers all the timeā€¦ā€¦I canā€™t remember why but it will be something to do with what mankind has done to their habitat:-(

    Anyways – Hoorah it’s Friday!
So off now for Chow Mein and wine!
    Be good ladies
    ONwards and Downwards!

Hi Everyone, Saturday morning here in the southern hemisphere.

Precious, my 5:2 journey started when I saw Michael’s first program on IF about 2 years ago on our SBS station. Interesting but even though I was severely overweight (BMI abt 33) I wasn’t in the right frame of mind because I was miserable with very sore knees from OA.

The program was repeated last year, followed by the Fast Exercise one and I was then recovering from 2nd knee replacement and the heaviest I had every been.

Over about 4 months I got down to 81.2kg (BMI ~31) but then it was Christmas and a month’s summer holiday when, you guessed it, I rediscovered most of my earlier weight, therefore not really lost šŸ™‚

Since returning to work at the end of January I have been mostly conscientious on fast days but pretty much usual eating on other days. Consequently weight loss very slow and with Easter and my 68th birthday within a week of each other, sometimes a gain.

However, am now in a good routine of fasting Mondays and Tuesdays and keeping a food diary for non-FDs to ensure I stay below my TDEE and it’s paying dividends. My BMI is ~32 and I’m much fitter because I can walk so much further without pain.

I’m one of the LOACAs with a pedometer – I use a Fitbit flex which I wear on my wrist and it tracks sleep as well, though don’t ask me how. I find it useful on nights when I think I’ve slept very badly to discover that even though I have been awake quite a lot, the total is sometimes not that bad.

There are other types of Fitbits, including one which measures stair climbing but I find mine quite adequate. It even gives a tiny vibrating reward when you have achieved your daily step target.

Hi PVE, loved your location puzzle. Unfortunately for those of us who also read the Southern Hemispherites thread you have already given it away. We’ll leave it to those further away to work it out.

BTW I believe ‘gyp’ is short for Egyptian and is wartime soldier slang for being cheated (not sure which of the WWs) in those politically less correct times.

    Happy weekend everyone.
    Nicky x

Hi Speedy, just read your post on this thread, how are you doing? The most important thing is you have reached a decision yourself and want to do something about it. Has the 5:2 helped you to lose some weight? I can agree, first hand, that the death of a spouse can have a traumatic effect. Unfortunately for me I had to make myself eat and still I lost weight. Now it has crept on slowly and I must keep it in check. I try an eat healthily through the week but I feel I must return to the 5:2, not done it for a while. However with a teenage daughter I try and find recipes I can cook and adapt for her to save making two meals on fast days. We both love the Lo-lo meatballs, trying the light weight cottage pie tonight. X

PS I am menopausal and like to exercise but with a worn hip I have to be careful. I love Zumba and weight bearing exercise is good for bone density, but I am looking at other forms of exercise. May have to try Pilates or yoga to try and keep flexible!

Hi @alih61 Good luck with your healty eating. x
Yes, I lost 17 kilos it last year in about 16 months. So although everyone thought it was a crazy crash diet – in fact I was just losing the recommended 2 lbs a week. I did 36ish hours not eating at all. That was quite easy for me.
After bit of winter blues and two medical blips I’m gearing up to starting again in June. (I have a lot to lose – bmi low 50s.)
I’m veggie but I think if you eat meat and fish it must be easier. I also low carb – not very, very low but less than 80-100 gramms on most non-fast days.
I think that the low carb part really contributed a lot to my initial weight-loss. 5:2 is a slow, gentle way to lose weight but I needed something a bit faster. What I’ve read about for example Stephen Fry, he also cut the processed carbs to get good weightloss. Personally I think 5:2 is mostly about what good it does for metabolic things such as insulin levels andthe bad effects that continual eating or snacking every couple of hours has on that often leading to diabetes.
But that’s just conclusions I’ve come to after years of unsuccessful dieting.

    Hello Everybody

Not sure if it will suit as it does me but I make big batches of organic chicken stock on the weekend and freeze in litre containers for my fast days.

I then add some chicken or some sliced steak, or those little pork or meat balls, from waitrose and some veggies – sliced shitaki mushrooms, carrots, fresh coriander & mint spring onions/scallions for our US ladies, cucumber bits of veg even a half of little gem lettuce etc . . . and it keeps me so full and happy. I also bung in some of my home made fermented veggies for my gut.

And instead of tea or coffee I will also heat up just the plain broth in a mug for my drinks . . . and the broth keeps me very full and satiated. And for client days I just do broth till evening and have a big bowl with veggies and protein.

The other bonus is that broth is excellent for the skin of us LOACA’s and that can’t be bad and will surely help us to not end up with a size 12 UK body but a size 18 skin šŸ™‚ They say it’s the collagen in it . . . also madly good for the bones and again an important one for us.

I get my organic chicken carcasses delivered to me by Riverford Organic. They also do organic beef bones which I also use.

I will also sneak this broth into everything I possibly can during the other days to spread the goodness.

I then don’t have to think about what I am having for fast day ever now . . . I bought the books etc but between the faffing and the shopping it just felt like too much effort to be honest, so I had to find a way to simplify that was also highly nutritious and able to keep me from being a starvin marvin.

    Have a lovely weekend all . . .

Hello all the LOACA, I just remembered something I heard a few years again and I just tried to look it up for us. My information was if we lose 7lb of weight it will relieve the pressure by 2 stone on our knees, this is the piece I just copied.
Gaining weight puts a lot of extra stress and strain on your knees, which must bear the brunt of those excess pounds. The added pressure increases wear and tear, contributing to osteoarthritis. On the flip side, losing weight can help you take a load off, literally. One study (Arthritis and Rheumatism, July 2005) found that every lost pound subtracts four pounds of pressure from the knees for each step taken. In practical terms, losing just 10 pounds means that each knee is subjected to 48,000 fewer pounds of pressure for every mile walked. Happy reading and fasting JIP

    Hi JIP!

I left a post for you JIP which just goes to prove you don’t always read back! So that is you sent to the back of the class! and you are one of our star pupils too…..:-(
It was about your jeans post; I know all the LOACA’s on here would appreciate hearing about it.

Have a lovely weekend everyone; off to spend some money which is something I am very good at!

    BooBooxx

Hi everyone- hope you’re all having a great weekend.

Speedy, I don’t have any experience with ‘shapewear’, in fact I have no idea what it is? Is it for controlling the flabby wobbles we are all sooooo familiar with?

At the gym and for yoga I just wear a cotton polo shirt on top, with a sports bra, and trackies on the bottom – and my backside needs all the help it can get! šŸ™‚

If the weather is really hot I abandon any vestiges of pride and swap trackies for longish elastic waisted boxer-style shorts. The gym I go to isn’t full of impossibly sculpted beautiful people (except for the trainers who are all gorgeous) admiring themselves in the mirror but is a 1-on-1 personal training business, so a lot of clients are in their senior years, either because of some rehab need or because they can now afford to spend some money on themselves.

Fasting for me tomorrow and Tuesday. Regarding ‘enjoying’ it, I don’t really but do derive great satisfaction in being able to control what I put in my mouth on those days, and the spillover to non-FDs is that if I feel hungry, I can practise my FD strategies.

    Nicky xxx

    Hi again Speedy

Just re-read your original post about ‘shapewear’. Is it like a corset? If it is it doesn’t seem to the sort of thing that would be comfortable enough to exercise vigorously in.

Like you I need to lose more than 5 stone in your units (30kg) but still manage in my loose and comfortable trackies and T-shirt. I don’t think about what I look like but focus on how much good I’m doing myself. If anyone else minds then tough on them!

In addition to the weights program I also do yoga, which has improved my flexibility no end so I can now do most poses even if my blobby belly occasionally gets in the way.

    Nicky xxx

Hi Nicky šŸ™‚ Thanks for your reply šŸ™‚
As I understand it they are often more like extra strong leotards or control knickers on steroids!
It’s not a vainity thing – I gave up on vanity years ago lol and my gym is also fullof all shapes and sizes – but about comfort.
I really find that, especially my stomach being so big, is just uncomfortable and changes the way I walk and cycle on the machines in the gym and it’s just sweaties and I also think a bit of control there helps with back pain.
Maybe it’s also because I am short, about 5 foot?

I saw some of these garments on the tv on a programme about a young woman who was deciding weather or not to have weightloss surgery.

But clearly they are not very well known (yet!) But thanks very much for your reply. Your gym sounds really good – I hope you are also enjoying exercising as much as I do. šŸ™‚

    Hi again Speedy

Wow! Knickers on steroids …. I must look out for them.

We must be a bit behind here in the antipodes, maybe they’ll turn up soon. Good luck in your search.

I hesitate to offer advice so please don’t be offended. At your gym I assume you have a program to follow? If your back is giving you trouble, you might like to consider asking for some exercises to strengthen your core. Pilates style e.g. fitball rollouts, planks and the like may help, but do take it slowly.

Hope you have a good week.

    Nicky xxx

PreciousBooBoo, I consider myself told off I will go back and read it now. I cannot think how I missed it, my hubby said I talk to you all more than I talk to him, well I have been talking to him for 28 years and you all about 28 days. LOL back soon. JIP

Of course I’m not at all offended Nicky šŸ™‚

I really think my backache come from my apple shape dragging my back forwards. When I lost some kilos last year it was really helped – but I put some back on again – DOH! šŸ™
I do some core exercises – I love using the abdomminal crunch machine! And do some gentle back exercises for about 50% then cycle and walking for 50%
Really silly thing is I live quite near the gym and drive there. Plan to walk of course – when:
    a) I’m a bit fitter/lighter and
    b) when I have more time!
    c) and when I eventually get around to it! šŸ™‚

Maybe even try Zumba one of these days šŸ˜‰

I think you Antipodes are ahead of all of us with fitness etc though šŸ™‚ xx

I am 62. In my younger days I worked in a hospital medical lab and was always around 135-140 lbs (63 Kg). I’m 5’8″. I transitioned to a new career in my mid 40’s in IT that involved a lot of sitting and quickly gained 45 lb. I lost them with Weight Watchers Online in about 9 months. Over the years I’ve gained 15 lbs. I tried WW again, but it just didn’t seem to stick with me. I then stumbled on Intermittent Fasting and after reading Mosley’s book and watching the documentary I gave it a shot. In 3 months I was able to lose the 15 lbs. and have kept it off for the last 9 months. I now weigh 150 lb (68 kg), but i’m ok with that weight and the way I look at my age.
Some things that worked for me both on this and WW:
    1. I walk/jog 2-4 miles/day. (exercising on an empty stomach is really easier than right after a meal). Also do some minor weight lifting (and I do mean minor šŸ™‚
    2. I eat 4+ servings fruits/veggies/day and often 6-8. Both raw and cooked.
    3. On my fast days I use My Fitness Pal App and carefully track my calories on those days.
    4. I also studied other IF – and am intrigued with the 16 hr/day fast. So I currently do one 500 cal/day fast (usually Mondays), and Tues-Friday I do the 16 hr/day fast and weekends I eat healthy. (I’ve understood, rightly or wrongly, that the 16 hr/day fast should be an everyday, so that’s why I combined as I did.
    5. I’ve found even when my calorie count is low, if I eat a lot of processed foods and things that have added sugar/fructose corn syrup, I can gain 5 lbs overnight. I still indulge on occ, but I know what it does.
In short, this fasting has really worked for me and I find I’m not so consumed with food – tho’ I still love to cook and eat! (I love some of Jamie Oliver’s thoughts on food).
Thanks for allowing me to post.. may be long and boring. My apologies.

    Hi Speedy

It’s nice to ‘see’ you on here a bit more often. I was thinking about your interesting discussion with K8tie regarding stored negative energy etc.

You know that RR works for you; have you tried the individual remedies in the range? Honeysuckle which is for ‘living in the past’ helped me enormously with long-term stored grief and Pine helped with feelings of guilt.

As you will appreciate; not all of them work for all of the people all of the time but you have evidence that they work for you; so considering the relatively small cost, they would be well worth a go.

I would recommend though that you try and get another brand now; Bach sold the company and the new owners do not make the remedies to the original Bach recipe. A company called Ainworth does still adhere to the original formula and so they are more authentic; so you should have a better chance of them being successful.

    BooBooxx

    Hi JIP!

Where did you go? Did you get waylaid yapping to someone? Or are you giving your husband gyp? šŸ™‚

    BooBooxx

    Hi NickyF

Itā€™s nice to ā€™seeā€™ you too on here a bit more often! I do try and keep up with peopleā€™s history but my memory is not great so I canā€™t remember details. So I had totally forgotten that you had had, not one, but both knees replaced! No wonder you gained weight; who wouldnā€˜t?

Iā€™m glad you seem to have got yourself back on track regarding the FD and have started losing weight again; and as you say, you can exercise so much more now due to your new knees.

I was about to ask you; how on earth does the fitbit measure how much you actually sleep in bed? But you said you donā€™t know either.

I love the fact that you know where the phrase ā€˜gyppedā€™ originates from. I had no idea that it is known worldwide and that we all generally have the same definition. Though as JIP and I have discussed, it also means here in the UK; bother, trouble, irritation etc.

Keep Fasting as Lulu01 would say!
    BooBooxx

That’s really useful info PBB. I will look up that other brand. How silly of a company to change things like that!
I enjoy the interesting pathways that some conversations go down!
    xx

Hello All Ladies Of A Certain Age!

Iā€™m not normally on here at this time on a Sunday but we were heading out for a long walk after lunch and yes, raining againā€¦ā€¦..
I am getting really sick of how much it rains up here; it makes the scenery beautiful but lordy, the rain stops you doing anything outside.
The sun has decided to come out now that itā€™s too late to goā€¦ā€¦

Anyways, Hello and Welcome to AliH61 and swanlzs.

Hi AliH61 – What are Lo-lo meatballs? Can you buy them in the UK?

Iā€™m impressed that you can do Zumba; I bought myself the DVDā€™s to self teach but the girls on there go so fast that I literally cannot keep up with them! I also had trouble I think with my left and right brain, or is it just my entire brain? LOL! Because they were facing towards me on the telly and of course, I was facing them and trying to emulate themā€¦ā€¦
    so like in mirror vision.
I was so disappointed because I love the music and I love dancing; so to me it seemed a fantastic way to improve fitness.

Hi swanlzs – Iā€™m sure no-one found your post long and boring; quite the opposite. We all appreciate hearing from different LOACAā€™s about how they approach the FD and crucially how they have made it work for them.
So are you saying that you do all the above just to maintain your weight; have I read that right?
I too love Jamie Oliver and his cooking. Heā€™s been looking a bit podgy though for some time; I donā€™t know why he doesnā€™t have a go at the FD!

Hi K8tie – You are such a fount of knowledge; I am again impressed! Making your own stock to enhance meals and improve your skin; is it the bone marrow element that is so good for our skin?
Please keep telling us all about your tips; I might never get round to doing them but I like reading about them.

Hi Again JIP! – That is a very interesting post about pressure on our knees; thank you for sharing that. I think all these little facts/tips/etc all add up to keeping us generally on the straight and narrow.
Now where is your post on your smaller size jeans?ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦itā€™s not like you to hide your light under a bushel!

Hi piper – How are you? When you said ā€˜we are your support systemā€™ does that mean you are the only one on the FD amongst your family and friends?
Is the Memorial Tournament a golfing thing? I might at least look in see what Ohio looks like from the golf course!

Iā€™m going to go and sit on our new swinging seat in the sunshine and read; you have to make hay etc up hereā€¦..in a half an hours time it could be persisting down again!

Be good Ladies; though itā€™s another Bank Holiday Weekend in the UK and that means we normally treat ourselves tomorrow tooā€¦ā€¦
    Iā€™ve said this before.
There is no hope for me; Save Yourselves!
    ONnwards and Downwards!

Hi PreciousBooBoo the Lo-lo meatballs are from “the Fast Diet Recipe Book” by Mimi Spencer and Dr Sarah Schenker, I bought last year from Tescos for Ā£8. The meatballs are made from pork or turkey mince. Last night on my first fasting day for months we had the lightweight Cottage pie, it had a celeriac and leek mash on top. I will definitely cook it again. Weighted myself this morning and lost 1lb.

It’s better to go to a class for Zumba, it doesn’t matter if you can’t do hands and feet, do the feet first then add in hands. Our instructor says don’t worry if you can’t do the feet just keep moving! I always say do what exercise suits you best, I go to Zumba with my daughter – she does what she can, and that’s a lot, as she has had spinal fusion for a curved spine.

Nice to chat with you x

PreciousBooBoo I typed nearly all message and then the iPad battery went,
    So here goes again.
I wearmy pedometer on a lanyard around my neck, but it has a clip for waist band but I do not like it there it can come off and fall in the loo or forgotten on waistband and forget put in washing machine like my sister did with hers.
My little story for those who have not read the reply to a thread on other board.
My sister wanted it buy a pair of jeans to go on a weekend coach holiday, She picked up a size 16 and just so I could see them on her I took a size 14 we both tried them on and they were too big, I gave her my size 14 and I asked the assistant in higher than usual voice if she possibly had a size 12’s in these jeans please, we giggled like teenagers both of us had never bought a pair of jeans in our lives, Barbara is 9 years older than me, me only a mere 66/67 at the time. Now I have a 4 pairs of blue, 1 black,1 brown and 1 White, one is even a size 10 that I will try on
again. When I get this last few pounds off. I liked the scales this morning after a B2B so fasting tomorrow ready for Tuesday weigh in at WW. Wish me luck. JIp

Hi swans,I am a believer in WW too I go tto goal twice. 1995 and 2010/2011.
I got to goal July 2011,lost 42 lbs in 6 months,10 months to lose the last 10 lbs. (17 months in all) size 12’s is wonderful. 3 pts of water a day and walked my little feet off. stayed to goal third anniversary on 5th July 2014 at goal. I hope I have cracked this yo yo dieting. I would like to lose another 7 lb so not always be thinking about 5lb limit. Holidays keep getting in the way of WW. I am now doing 5 days WW and 2 days on the 5-2 started 4/4/14 doing well
I’m finding that I over eat on non fast days but I can stick to 500- 550 fast days, I am having a day off today, I put on 1+1/2 lbs today at WW is am going to have rum and coke and start again tomorrow and this tomorrow is going to come unlike so often we promise ourselves. I walk over 15k that 6 miles and still put on, I like walking and playing bowls. I still take my steroids and under active meds have a lot to answer for. Happy fasting

Hi Precious, Jip, Nicky, Speedy, Swanlz and all (this site is ending up like a party, isn’t it?)
Yes Boo, my husband and I are very lucky. We keep on flitting off on little trips. With the superb Autumn weather here and no kids to be daily responsible for any more (we ignore the cat), it is easy to drop everything and go. We tend to sit around pools or on the beach in summer and travel the rest of the year. Even had a surf this weekend despite it being almost winter!! Unseasonably warm.
It is SO far and SO expensive to go to Europe from here, we are doing “local” trips this year.
I think my husband feels the same way, JIP. I am going to have to take the notifications off my phone as, when we are driving with the bluetooth on, my phone keeps going “bling” to let me know about another Fast Diet Website posting. He even comments “So your little friends in the UK are awake now” as evening arrives.

Boo, I always said I wanted to be below 60kg. Not 9 stone (we left that stuff behind decades ago). So, yes, I am at goal, and if I lose a bit more, to reduce the last fat on the tummy, I wouldn’t complain, but certainly will not obsess about it. As long as I fit into my size 9 jeans comfortably I know I’m ok. JIP, I was wearing 16s last year and only ended up in 9 when the shop lady insisted on me trying smaller and smaller sizes. I also ask for size 9, or small in tops, in quite a loud voice now. Doesn’t hurt to show off! I find the smaller jeans make me stand up straighter and hold me muscles in. When I put on more “comfortable” ones, I tend to slouch. When you look good you flaunt it!
We are off to the other side of this enormous land to visit family and will not be close to reliable networks, so I will miss you all for a couple of weeks.
Keep up supporting each other. I’ll try not to overindulge while I’m away from my scales.
    Cheers
    PVE

PreciousBooBoo – let me elaborate a bit on why I do “all” that to maintain… I mainly do a 16fast/8hr eat Tuesday-Friday for health reasons (feel great and BP is lower) – it’s easy and I think I eat pretty hearty during that 8 hr. I try not to eat many processed foods, and I think I eat less than most folks I know, but it’s pretty difficult not to have some. If I cut all this out, I’m pretty sure I’d still lose weight. I’m not a huge breakfast eater unless I have time to relax and enjoy it, so eating only from noon to 8 pm 4 days/week is easy.
If I only did a 1 day fast after meeting goal, I’d gain weight (I did when I tried it for a few weeks) and that’s when I found the 16:8. Weekends are mine to enjoy with family and not think about what I eat… probably why I maintain on this.
I do fall off the wagon on occasion, but with this fast diet, it’s easy to get back on. The one day of 500 call makes me more cognizant of portion sizes… guess I need all my “crutches” šŸ™‚ Thanks for all you thoughts. Been fun to read this thread.

PVE, have a lovely holiday, are you in OZ? JIP

    Hi JIP!

Well we eventually got your jeans story and I for one loved hearing it.

I love the fact that you and your sister giggled like teenagers about needing a smaller size BUT I really love the fact that you had both never bought a pair of jeans in your lives. And yet here you are buying some right now!

In fact I am going to award you this weeks

    STAR LOACA AWARD!!!!!!!!

for buying; not one pair of jeans for the first time in your life but buying four pairs!

You are only as old as you feel JIP! and you and your sister sound like daft young girls who are really good fun.

We all send you our good wishes for getting back to your WW GOAL tomorrow. Will you start trying to maintain then?

Hello All Ladies Of A Certain Age!

How are you all? And where are you all?:-)

Are you out enjoying the sunshine? I hope so.

We have just come in from a really long walk and my feet have just stopped pulsating! I absolutely must get a pedometer ordered so I can see how many steps we do on one of our longer walks.

Off to sit on our swinging seat and have a read; bliss.

    ONwards and Downwards!

Good evening PreciousBooBoo, I have walked 22,953 steps today that is 9.41 miles I hope it will be the effort I need for tomorrow, I’ m glad you like my little experience with the jeans, I hope you understand that it did take me 2 years to buy all my jeans not all the same day. That would have been extravagant. LOL
Thanks for the star award. I will wear it with pride LOL.
I agree about my sister and me being mad everyone we have met never thinks she any older than I am. Not sure what that says LOL. She is the most fantastic sister anyone could have! I am missing her she is away for 2 weeks holidays in Greece.
If I get to my goal tomorrow I will then try to lose a few more pounds just to be able to keep under the 5 allowed by WW when I have holidays. We are never satisfied are we? Fasting today so going to make quick cup of cappuccino. Hope to have good news tomorrow. Hope LOACA are well and fasting well too. JIP

Hi BooBoo, just going bowling so I have copied post ot JOJO thread so forgive me please.

De-caf coffee tastes fine to me and I like coffee to look like a coffee.
On the wieght side I am so disappointed I could cry I did not lose an oz, on Sunday after fast Fri and Sat and the scales showed a lose of 2 lb I felt sure I would get to go my goal wieght again today. After all those steps last week 83k in 6 days, over 22k yesterday and Sunday was the only day when I had a roast lunch with one potato and lost of veg but real home gravy, which should not have made that much of diff wince difference? Next week I am going to a B2B Sunday and Monday and see if that will do the trick, also going to cut my odd and I mean odd is unit to and no alcohol for the week,
I like what I see in the mirror but not on my WW card, my friends say I am too hard on myself and itā€™s not a magic figure but it seems to be for me. All my adult life I have always wanted to be 9 stone and later on 10 stone I do not want to look skinny just nice. Playing bowls this afternoon, I did 10 minutes on the trampoline before WW today and got off the bus 4 stops before my desertnation pedometer reads 9376 now and itā€™s no 1pm yet. I need a virtual paper hanky please. JIP ( feeling very sorry for myself.)

Hi there I am 53 just batting into 5/2 but love it I have to say I found it hard to lose anything but have recently moved to low carb and have found it great not hungry at all and lost 23lbs and walked.reep at it sometimes it might help to make additional changes in diet.keep going and good luck

    Hi PBB and everyone šŸ™‚
I am back from a wonderful week in Corfu. The temperature was just perfect (around 22/24c) the company (DH) was entertaining and easy going, and the villa was fabulous.
I mostly skipped breakfast, had Greek salad for lunch then ate in one of the gorgeous tavernas in the evening. Unfortunately the Greek Salad was accompanied by freshly baked bread (from Aphrodite over the road from the villa) and dry white white with both meals.
I now know that carbs – particullarly bread – is my downfall šŸ™ and I feel a bit stodgy/podgy today.
NVM back to it with the knowledge that bread is now a definite no no for me!
Having said that I have had some square things made by Warburtons called Thins, which do make a reasonable sandwich for normal days, and are only 100 cals each. Not quite fresh and crusty but acceptable.
So yes Suzieg, you are quite right, we all have to tweak 5:2 to make it work šŸ™‚
As PBB says – onwards and downwards….. šŸ˜€

    Hi JIP šŸ™

I’m leaving out my usual exclamation mark because I know you are not a happy bunny today.

I’m so sorry that you didn’t lose any weight at WW and get to your goal today. I totally understand that you are really disappointed too.

But…..I do tend to agree with your friends that you are being really hard on yourself and giving way too much credence to the numbers on the scales.

The amount you are walking/bowling/trampolining must be making your muscles more toned and that is probably the reason you are not getting the weight loss you want to see. I don’t think you made any comment the other week; when I told you that someone on this forum said that a lb of fat was grapefruit sized and a lb of muscle was tangerine sized.

I also asked if you used your body measurements as a guide?

Chin up matey; you are really very lucky that you like what you see in the mirror. There are shed loads of us who don’t, at least not yet!

    BooBooxx

Hi LindyW and all our LOACA’s

I do envy you going somewhere where it hasn’t rained pretty much every day; I’m not into ‘hot’ holidays anymore but I am really getting sick of it raining for England….

Your holiday sounds lovely Lindy. I’m not sure what you mean by the company being DH? I absolutely adore greek salads and could happily live on them, if the weather is clement. The white wine accompaniment sounds lovely too!
Personally, I think it would be a real waste to deny yourself something like the local bread which you said was gorgeous; you are then into unduly restricting yourself. It is supposed to be a holiday from normal life and and you can always lose it now you are back home.

Did you get weighed when you came back? I always find it interesting to see how much we gain or not when not fasting at all and treating ourselves.

Anyways, I left you a long post some time after YOUR LAST HOLIDAY! asking you about Dresden; which we have visited.

I’m sure you will lose any extra baggage you have brought back from Greece Lindy:-)

Hello All Our Ladies Of A Certain Age!

How are you today? Does anyone have some weight loss to tell us about to cheer us up? (Sorry JIPā€¦..put your hands over your eyes)

Hello suzieg and Welcome to this thread.

Hi suzieg – 23lbs is an admirable loss. How long have you been on the FD? And in what way did you reduce your carbs? Itā€™s good to know the details.

Hi swanlzs – Thanks for elaborating on how you are maintaining. We have another LOACA Sassy who also still has to fast for 2 days to maintain but she does it because it means she can have extra treats on some of the other days.
We do like to know detail on this thread; so it is interesting to find that you would gain if you only fasted for the one day. Itā€™s all information for us when we get to the promised land of maintainingā€¦..:-)

Hi AliH61 – Thanks for the information on the Lo-lo Balls; I havenā€™t bought any of Mimiā€™s cookbooks as yet but might have a look next time Iā€™m out shopping. I tend to eat the same things on fast days; I canā€™t be bothered weighing/totting up the calories etc and if I stick to the same things, I donā€™t have to think on those days.

When I watched Zumba first on QVC, it looked a doable kind of pace; not manically fast or anything. So I went ahead and bought the DVDā€™s and it seemed to be much much faster! What a waste; I couldnā€™t follow the moves in a slower way because then I just got totally left behindā€¦.

You said you are ā€˜returning to the FDā€™? What was your previous experience of it and crucially when you came off it; did the weight you had lost come straight back on?
There is loads of evidence of people losing weight on this regime but the numbers are much smaller for those who have lost weight and kept it off.

Hi Purple Vegie Eater – Off on another holiday! Lucky you and hubby.
Was that a typo when you told JIP that you were wearing size 16 jeans last year and now you are in a size 9? That is one hell of a difference.

You must be off to somewhere fairly remote if there are no reliable networks. I will miss your chatty posts in the meantime.
    Have a good time!

Just noticed we havenā€™t heard from Her Maj latelyā€¦.she has been quiet and quiet is not a word I would normally associate with Her Maj!

    Anyways Ladies
    ONwards and Downwards! I hopeā€¦..

    Hi PreciousBooBoo

I generally follow a low GI diet every day but do stray when I fancy something else, I’m only human. Today I had a Hot chocolate at Costa minus the cream and a small caramel shortbread! I wouldn’t say I am a yoyo dieter but over the years I’ve done Rosemary Connolly, Weight Watchers and some others but the low GI diet has helped me lose 21 lbs over 18 months, but I couldn’t crack the 9 stone barrier. So This week I went back to 5:2, I do it from time to time, to shake things up a bit.

The good news is I’ve LOST 2.5 lbs this week by having 2 fasting days and dipped below 9 stone just. I’m 52 and find weight creeps on if I eat what I like. So I decided it was time to do alternate fasting for a while. Like you I tend to eat much the same thing, but like someone else said I don’t look a recipe books on fast days, I plan in advance what I will eat, so I can just select the page and cook it – this week I have cooked extra so I can freeze some for next week. I have a big family party on Saturday so I will fast three times this week so I can enjoy myself. I am of the era that had to clear their plates at school of it was no pudding, it’s a habit that is very hard to break. So I find good portion control has helped me.

The low GI diet prevents me feeling very hungry and stops me snacking too much. I eat a few almonds and hazelnuts mid morning and drinks loads, mostly tea – some with soya and herbal. I’m now also drinking flavoured green tea, I found twinings green tea with orange and lotus flower and today salted caramel, that’s fab not too sweet and you can taste and smell the salt and caramel. Tomorrow I’m going to try and make my own flax milk, found the recipe on here (I’m lactose intolerant) it’s very low cal so good for5:2 days.

Sorry for the long reply, talking to others helps to keep you motivated. Hope my success has spurned a few on to continue x

Oops meant to say I had not put much weight back on only a pound or three, but I don’t let myself off the rails permanently. I’ve stayed fairly constant for the last 6 months when I’ve not done the 5:2. I’m now menopausal. I like the foods I now eat, not too much bread or I feel bloated, but I love fresh bread especially french baguettes.

Ahhh PBB how did I miss this

Hi LindyW ā€“ Oh Lindy you are so lucky to have just been to Germany; we absolutely adore Germany closely followed by Austria etc. We too have been to Dresden and found it just as exquisite as pretty much everywhere we have been to in Germany.

Did you get to visit Colditz by any chance? We did when we were over that way. It was incredibly evocative being there; it is such a beautiful castle and yet when you consider it was used as a prison for World War 2 prisoners of war.
It was unbelievable seeing the items the prisoners fashioned out of nowhere; uniforms to imitate the German Officers, sewing machines on which to sew them, passportsā€¦ā€¦it was mind-blowing really.
Not to mention the tunnels they carved through the thick stone with ā€¦..teaspoons!
Weā€™ve never been to Berlin though; we tend to avoid the really big cities if we can, preferring the smaller locations.
And off to Corfu next week; you are a lucky girl.

And most importantly, you are having no real problem maintaining! And we know that you are not an exercise Bunny as some are.
That does seem to be quite unusual Lindy; you are probably the exception rather than the rule.
    ————————————-
Yes Dresden is impressive and the rebuilding is very sympathetic to its former glory and even the excavations are interesting.
We also got to Colditz, it was very impressive but I expected it to be further away from the very pretty little town of Colditz. It was all fascinating we had ‘Brian Blessed’ as our guide there and he was very informative. Those prisoners were very clever and inventive with their escape attempts!
I prefer the small locations too but DH (darling Husband since you were wondering) has a thing about Berlin which he finds fascinating and has visited several times.

Corfu was a holiday just for relaxation and we thoroughly enjoyed it. I haven’t weighed in yet – couldn’t bear to! I am fasting Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday then will crash onto the scales on Sunday. No formal exercise is not for me but I do walk a fair bit and am fairly active for my great age šŸ˜›

    Hi Lindy,

I’ll be joining you on 3 fasts this week- even to the day! We had a long weekend this past week and I need it.

Thanks for the encouragement BooBoo, I have not taken measurements but I can get into everything I have in wardrobe and they all look OK on me.
I am sending these replies from my ipad in a lovely new hospital my hubby is having an op on his hand I will be here hours, so I will be on here reading all the threads I may have missed.
The hospital has lots of open staircases and I am going to do some marching up and down them carrying my packed lunch in my nap sack on my back before I eat it, also this ipad. Now what else can I do to get to my goal. LOL. Fasting to day, happy fasting or non fasting everyone. JIP

Bunty f. Ditto for me. 5 weeks of sticking to it rigorously, healthy eating on feed days. I am 50. No weight loss whatsoever and no loss of inches either, headaches on fast days yet I drink water all day. very disheartened. Not sure where to go from here. šŸ™

@maxact sorry to hear you are struggling šŸ™
Sometimes I have read of this happening with people who don’t have too much to lose anyway. Have you done your calculations (under How at the top of the page)? Are you eating enough on normal days and not dropping too low on your calories?
I have hit plateaus on a couple of occasions for weeks but ploughed on and suddenly turned a corner with good weight loss and inches gone – even from my fingers!
Hopefully someone else will be more helpful to you, I really understand your despondency.
    Keep trying šŸ™‚
