  • Hi everyone

Here’s a link regarding exercise and fat loss which gives quantitative support to natasor’s post above:
    http://informhealth.com/how-to-lose-fat-with-exercise-part-2/

The author is a qualified exercise physiologist who is co-owner of the gym I belong to so I know the information is reliable.

    Nicky

    Morning PBB and co.
I have just reread your reply and as much as I would like to think about this blinking weight increase but
A pound of muscle would weigh the same as a pound of fat and the same as a pound of feathers but they look difference, I would like to think mine is muscle LOL. Going out walking all day today. Speak later keep fasting, I am today. JIP

    @natasor

“Unfortunately, by the age 50 our metabolism drops to 50% of 20th y/o age level, and by 60 y/o to 20%. ”

I knew this was the case, however, I was unaware of the drastic drop in metabolism percentages.

I wonder if the metabolism increases with consistent HIIT performance?

PVE, I do know how you feel, I came back from Tenerife on the 4th Feb this year and within 36 hours I had food poison the only good thing was all the weight I put on on the all inclusive 10 day holiday came off as quick as it went on. LOL. Hope you are better soon.

Hello All Ladies Of A Certain Age!

Hello All, how are you today?

Hello and Welcome to natasor – Wow natasor; that all sounds a bit hard core to this veritable couch potato. Do you do all that and how have you done on this exercise regime and the fast diet?
We need details to get us off our backsides! (I should really only include me there; I can’t speak for our other LOACA’s)

Hi K8tie – One of my books arrived today and I was going to read it straight off but it was nice for a change I.e. not raining, so we were in the garden communing with nature. It will take priority though over any other reading.

Hi Her Maj – I would love it if my husband learned how to teach something really interesting and life prolonging like Qi Gong – lucky you.

Hi LindyW – Oh Lindy you are so lucky to have just been to Germany; we absolutely adore Germany closely followed by Austria etc. We too have been to Dresden and found it just as exquisite as pretty much everywhere we have been to in Germany.

Did you get to visit Colditz by any chance? We did when we were over that way. It was incredibly evocative being there; it is such a beautiful castle and yet when you consider it was used as a prison for World War 2 prisoners of war.
It was unbelievable seeing the items the prisoners fashioned out of nowhere; uniforms to imitate the German Officers, sewing machines on which to sew them, passports……it was mind-blowing really.
Not to mention the tunnels they carved through the thick stone with …..teaspoons!
We’ve never been to Berlin though; we tend to avoid the really big cities if we can, preferring the smaller locations.
And off to Corfu next week; you are a lucky girl.

And most importantly, you are having no real problem maintaining! And we know that you are not an exercise Bunny as some are.
That does seem to be quite unusual Lindy; you are probably the exception rather than the rule.
Good for you! Enjoy your next jolly!

Hi NickyF – It is nice to hear from you again; people seem to just disappear and you don’t know why; which I always think is a shame.

‘Gone up in smoke’ – does that mean the 1.2kg has unfortunately had the temerity to come back on? Do you think you have been going over your TDEE on non-fast days? It is mighty easy to do. But I also know it is easy to just put weight on out of nowhere with really no good reason for it; so it must be water retention rather than putting on pure fat.
You don’t have to have ‘something’ in particular to say Nicky; just come on and have a bit of a moan or a chat. It all helps to keep you motivated.
Piper – lives in the States but I will let her fill you in on the rest of her details; so that is why it looks as if she is up posting in the middle of the night.
Thank you for your kind words; I do appreciate them.

Hi Purple Vegie Eater – That was a rotten end to your lovely holiday; are you feeling a bit better now? Only gaining 1kg on your holiday is amazing but as you say; vomiting for England probably helped on that score!

Hi JIP! – Has all that pesky Rum gone? I hope so. I hope you enjoyed finishing it off though! You cannot be good all the time; it makes JIP a dull girl!
I read on this forum; that someone said that a lb of muscle was the size of a tangerine and a lb of fat was the size of a grapefruit! So you could and most likely are smaller but more toned and actually heavier.
I don’t believe, someone walking and bowling as much as you could possibly gain 1½lbs of fat in a week….

Hi JeanDee – We have peaches in Britain! I think you said you wouldn’t feel ‘peachy’ until February! It is only May now; that is why I thought you had done a typo!
You are lucky Jean to average a lb a week loss; that is quite a loss at our stages of life with all the scrambled hormones etc.

Love the fact that you are wearing a blouse that hasn’t fitted for some years; so I have decided to award you this weeks STAR LOACA AWARD for just that reason! That is exactly the kind of little bit of good news we all love to hear; it helps to keep us plodding on.
    Rock that silk shirt!

Would still like to know what has happened to LUVTCOOK? She seemed like a keeper…
Also Lulu01 – where are you?

Anyways Ladies, must go and attend to our dinner.
    Onwards and Downwards!

Hi PBB. I had more rum left in the bottle than I thought, so no I did not get to finish off the bottle or I would have had one hell of a hangover! So it’s back down the garage for another week or two. I think I will wait until I get to goal now I have to lose 2+1/2 lb. so I will keep to this.
I am fasting today I have been very good I have been walking,
I don’t know if anyone knows South Wales I live about 20 miles from the City of Cardiff I had bus to it and walked across the new water barrage that crosses to the town of Penarth started out from home at 10.40 and got home at 5.40 other than stopping for a large skinny cappuccino and a look around the shopping area. Walked almost 16000 steps 6.34 miles
I had chocolate flavoured Whey 90 calories before starting out
    1/2 a banana ( shared with hubby)
1/2. Tin of chopped tin tomatoes
    WW yoghurt
    One carrot.
May have another cappuccino ( skinny of course ) later.
I am going to have be more careful,
I said on here somewhere that 100 grams of cantaloupe Mellon was 19 calories and I had a whole melon for 19 calories when the whole melon weighed 500 grams just 19 calories per 100 grams
Thank God it was only melon. LOL. JIP

Good morning all LOACAS from far away in the autumnal southern hemisphere.

We are having unseasonably warm balmy days with temps in the low 20s (that’s Celsius)so perfect for getting outside. Sadly the down side is we could do with some rain.

Precious, when I said 1.2 kg ‘gone up in smoke’ I meant I weighed 1.2kg less, i.e. burnt away. Thank you for the reminder about TDEE; I ascribe the loss to paying more close attention to it on non fast days instead of ‘hoping for the best’ and eating whatever and how much I fancied, which is what I had been doing during the past 3 weeks – sometimes I can be a bit thick and slow 🙂

Speedy, probably far too early for you to be getting back ‘on the air’ but I have been thinking of you.

Fasting tomorrow for me, hope everyone is going OK.

    Nicky

    Hello Ladies,
It’s a cold but sunny Thursday morning here in remote rural Australia.
I’m about to embark on my third fast day so did a ceremonial weigh-in first thing and I might have lost nearly 1kg but my scales are definitely dodgy so I take it with a pinch of salt. I bought the scales a couple of years ago for my husband to use when weighing calves – we have cattle and during calving he rides around the farm on his motorbike and any new calves are caught, tagged and weighed. The scales turned out not to be suitable, the display was not bright enough to read outside (while hanging onto a usually struggling calf and keeping an eye on Mum to make sure she’s not getting too ‘anxious’) so he took the bathroom scales and left me these dodgy ones.
PBB – my first fast day at work was very busy so I can see Thursday fasting should be ok and I might even come to like feeling empty if what I read is to be believed. Monday fast day is a day at home so I decided to join the Red Cross afternoon card players and try to play Five Hundred – I haven’t played cards for decades, I have a lot to learn. Some of the card players seem to enjoy themselves but others are very serious. If I survive the cards I just have to dodge the afternoon tea, well just the cake and biscuits.

    Hi all (especially Speedy)
I was hoping to hear by now that your op was a success Speedy. All the best with your recovery.
Thanks for the kind thoughts re my food poisoning. I made an amazing discovery though…Apple Cider Vinegar (a couple of tablespoons full in a glass of water) and within an hour the stomach cramps stopped and I have been feeling 100% ever since.
Had another great fast day today, keeping busy. As the weather is getting colder here, I have justified my shopping sprees to buy winter woolies that will fit my now Size S (for small) body. I figure if I shop on fast days, I can spend what I don’t use on food! Found a couple of lovely purple woolen jumpers that look great. That’s why I’m the Purple Vegie Eater…I wear purple and eat LOTS of vegetables. And yes, it is a pun on Purple People Eater.
Keep up the good work (ie fasting) girls
    Cheers
    PVE

    Hello!
Goodness today feels very, very good! 🙂
I got back from the hospital a couple of hours ago.
Though I can’t say it was a nice experience especially the anaesthetic, the staff were great and the operation was successful this time and the bleep bleep stone is completely gone. And gone to be analysed.

Thank you so much to everyone who wished me well. I really appreciate it.
Boy I had worked myself up into a state and had been feeling frightened these last 3 months. It’s understandable I think, human but futile.

Sobering to see my risk colour in the days order of work as pink when all but one other were green. But with a bit of application, 5:2 + low carbs, maybe I can still get back into that green-ish zone. At least away from the 50’s bmi zone.

Came home feeling really, really well. Much better than last time. The JJ stent they had left in before between my kidney and bladder is out now and it feels great.

Going to have a bit of a sleep now! Just thought I’d pop in and say hello 🙂 … and thanks for the support PBB and many other kind people. xx

    Go Team Speedy!!!!

Well done you . . . so very glad to hear this.

Rest up now it’s the weekend so good timing. And you deserve a little spoiling treat I think 😉
    Much love

    Oh Speedy that is wonderful!

I am so pleased for you to be rid of that pesky stone at last and have that, naturally, huge worry taken from your mind.

I wouldn’t normally be looking on here but I’m doing some admin for home stuff and couldn’t resist a quick peek.

Rest up and recuperate and soon you will be able to tackle your weight issue again and hopefully if you ever had to have another operation (let’s fervently hope not!); this time, your weight will not a factor.

Speak to everyone else later hopefully!

    BooBoo xx

to Pbooboo: I am back. Have had a killer week at work and family visiting….so no time for posting. Just stopped in to say HI and no, did not get hit by bus. Alive and well, just overwhelmed.

Not much to add….need some time to catch up with all I have missed.

Thintoart: sorry to say I have joined you on the naughty step. Have had a very rough week….no time to post and avoiding the thread per eating what was convenient and not usually diet worthy. Have no idea how much damage I have done…..never like to weigh until I have made up my mind to get back on straight and narrow. Company leaves tomorrow, so my excuses go with them.

    Precious Boo Boo

Client day so haven’t checked it out but for anyone who can here is the link for thyroid online seminars . . . yes webinars PBB accessed online.

“Ben Greenfield reveals why over-exercising and under-eating is the recipe for destroying your thyroid.

The above sessions will be re-posted to the website Friday at 8am Pacific Time and end Sunday at 11:59pm PT for an extended FREE 64-hour viewing period.

    Here’s the link:

    thethyroidsessions.com/access

In the meantime, you can still head over and catch today’s “Final 5” sessions with Andrea Nakayama, Dr. Kelly Brogan, Pete Servold, Dr. Andrea Maxim, and Dr. Ritamarie Loscalzo. “

    Hello LUVTCOOK!

And a warm welcome back! Did you note I was concerned about where you were? As I said – you seemed to be a ‘keeper’ on this thread; so then you get concerned about what is going on in people’s lives….like getting hit by buses etc…sometimes bad things happen.

I’m so pleased with you it was nice things like family visiting/ work being a nightmare/not having time to post etc – why would you ‘waste’ time being on here when you have guests to entertain/look after?

Give yourself time to take a breath and when you are ready; haul yourself back up onto the wagon with the rest of us!
Thankfully, it’s a big old wagon!

    BooBoo xx

Boo crew — On behalf of my purple, silk blouse I’m proud to accept the STAR LOACA AWARD. I will also give some press to my jeans that are no longer tight around the thighs. Wonderful feeling! I will put this honor on my career resume. Sometimes I think my 4 – 5 work outs at the gym is like peeling an onion, but I try not to dwell on it. It’s a mental challenge as well. Blessings, success and good health to all. Will check in next week – keep moving and stay young!

By the way — Boo, I did type February. Thought I typed Friday. My fingers work faster than me brain!

    Jean

Hi everyone. I’ve been on 5:2 for 4 weeks now. Lost 4 lbs. week 1, 2 lbs. week 2, 0 lbs. week 3, and tomorrow is weigh-day. Just a note that people might find interesting: I looked at all my vitamins, herbs, supplements, fiber etc. and added up all the calories. Some don’t have any, but some do. It appears that I’m taking about 190 calories worth per day! I was shocked! When I multiplied that times 365 and divided it by 3,500 (calories in a pound), it seems that’s 20 lbs. per year! Needless to say, I’m going to start cutting out a lot of them!

    Lori

Hello Ladies Of A Certain Age!

Isn’t it really really great to hear that Speedy has got through her operation this time round and it was totally successful! She doesn’t have it hanging over her head anymore and can now just concentrate on getting her strength back and looking at when she can re-start Fast Dieting again.

I have decided to create another NEW AWARD for the bravery she has shown; she didn’t really have any choice in the matter but it is nice for it to be acknowledged! And now it is all over and she is safe; we can have a bit of fun about it.

Can anyone think of a good name for this award? I thought of the
Bumper Big Bravery Award but it’s not exactly punchy. Have a quick think so we can ‘award’ it when she next posts….

Hi JIP – How are you doing? You are amazing walking that far in a day. Can you remember MM telling us in his book; just how valuable walking was for all kind of things including preventing dementia?
So it’s not HIIT but it is extremely valuable in many other ways and I will say again; you must be getting really toned up with it all.
Were you one of the braver LOACA’s who measured all over your body before you started the FD? This is where it puts the number on the scales into perspective.

Hi NickyF – I re-read your previous post and now I get it; you lost the 1.2kg because you suddenly started to keep a food diary for your non-fast days? That is no mean result is it?
Also weight gained because we’ve jumped off/fallen off/were pushed off the wagon is usually easier to lose because it is usually water retention.
Whatever was the case- Well done you!

Regarding the link on exercising – I like the fact that we share information like this on this thread; LOACA‘s can then research them if they want to and can make informed decisions about what they will/can do exercise wise.
Have you also looked at the latest post from K8tie on the same theme but the other side of the theory? If natasor is looking in she might want to take a look too.

Hi Violet May – LOL! I love the fact that the scales you are using were purchased to weigh your husband’s calves! No, to anyone else reading this, not her husband’s legs! His baby cows!
They should be fairly heavy duty then. You might want to treat yourself to some new fangled ones which give you your weight, body fat%, body mass index and % of water in the body. It depends; if you haven’t got much to lose this might be a bit of a waste. But they should at least be accurate in giving you your new weight.

That sounds like a good tactic; joining the cards club so you can go on your next fast day. I find coming on here is at it’s best for just the same reason; it stops me roaming and grazing in the kitchen.
What was the bit you had trouble believing? Was it the health claims? Good luck dodging the cakes and biscuits; what excuse will you give for not indulging? People who do; will want a bono-fide reason!

Hi Purple Vegie Eater – I wondered if you had mentioned eating a lot of purple vegetables! You’ve cleared that up now for us.

That is funny what you mentioned about the apple cider vinegar; I didn’t mention this on here but I read about people taking above with Manuka Honey and it being a tonic for them and also working wonders for arthritis. So I started taking it and promptly put on weight without any obvious reason but worst of all, the candida I suffer from got worse.
Does your husband have any thoughts on how to reduce systemic candida?

So unfortunately I had to desist taking it; my body always likes to be the exception but never in a good way.

Hi K8tie – Thank you for those links; the only trouble is finding the time to fit all these things in. But I really appreciate you taking the time to inform us of them so we can decide whether to ‘make‘ the time!

Hi lorilnCt – Only just seen your post; will have to respond tomorrow. No time now…..

Must go. It’s been a fast day and so looking forward to tomorrow which is one of my favourite days! Yes Thank God it’s …….
    Onwards and Downwards Ladies!

Hi PBB! Well, as you said I really didn’t have any choice so I’m
not sure it was brave and I shed a lot of fearful tears and took out shares in RR – but if I am allowed to suggest a name (is that allowed?)
    What about Stone Gone?

Would be appropriate in many other situations! 🙂

    Hi Speedy,

Like everyone else I’m absolutely delighted to hear that all went well for you and you are safely home. You must be a very relieved and very happy bunny. You now deserve a nice relaxing few days to enjoy getting used to being sans stone. 🙂

PBB, Yes, it is nice to have a hubby who teaches Qi Gong/Thai Chi. One of the things they were required to do was a “micro-teach” which was filmed. I have to say I was really proud of him – relaxed, friendly but with real authority.

Unfortunately, I’m so badly coordinated and dyspraxic that I have real problems trying to learn even the simplest moves. Just as well I’m good at other stuff, as I’m not one of his most successful students. 🙁

Hi all- sorry a long one!
Well done, Speedy. SO pleased it was a success! Now be kind to yourself while you recuperate. Your new comment just came in…Stone Gone is cute. I like it. Congratulations.

Precious, I only had one dose of ACV to totally cure the food poisoning. My husband believes it strips the enamel off your teeth if you use it regularly. I don’t think he has an opinion on candida (but I’m sure he’d come up with one if asked!).

Lori,we both take lots of vitamins (me for arthritis, simply to last all day- Vit B-, to be happy- magnesium- etc). My very opinionated scientist husband did do a calculation re these and came up with a much lower calorie count than yours. If it was that high we would not have lost the masses of weight we have.

Violet May, KMart in Australia sell really cheap modern scales that do all the calculations Precious mentions. They are very accurate too.
Re daily calorie needs. Now that I am only 60kg (132.2 lbs, 9.4 stone) my scales now tell me my needs are 1540 cals per day. That means only 385 calories on fast days. This is very important to remember when the weight has dropped. We really do need to keep recalculating and watching our total intake on normal days. It is pointless to keep eating 2000 cal every normal day and expect to keep the weight off if you should only have 1500. That is nearly 2500 calories too much in a week even if you are doing fast days properly. Hopefully doing fast days helps you to reset your appetite, rethink your food choices and embrace the new life you have given yourself. YOU ARE IN CONTROL. According to Michael’s research, your body will still gain the health benefits of fasting (allowing cells to heal) but you won’t lose weight if you overeat every other day. This is not just a weight loss eating program, it is a healthy lifestyle. The spinoff is learning to take charge of your own health.
Eat less, choose wisely and weigh often to maintain control.

Lastly, remember, one glass of water weighs 250gm (1/2 pound)so 4 glasses before I weigh myself would add a kilo. Your weight WILL fluctuate massively with the normal daily activities unrelated to fasting. Keep the faith. You can do it!

My body fat still reads as 32%, yet I am skinny with bones showing and my waist measurement is 1/2 my height..lost 10.6″ in a year. I don’t think I’ll ever get to 30% body fat. C’est la vie!

I love the way we talk from all over the world. When my little mates in the UK get online in the evening, I am being woken up by the bling of my phone letting me know about the new posts. What a tiny world we live in.
    Cheers to all,
    PVE

PVE, I would be 100% sure your scales are wrong in their fat percentage as they rely on an age related formula. I discovered this. when I decided to update my age from 50 to 56 and my fat percentage increased by 2 percentage points. I then started investigating what happened if I changed the age downwards and discovered my body fat percentage went down hugely. They assume that you are losing muscle as you age which is probably not the case, or at least not as much, if you are active, which it sounds you are. A much better method is the formula which Covert Bailey gives in one if his books:

    ( Hips + Thigh – 2 x Calf – Wrist ) / 100 = Body fat percentage

They have apparently checked this against accurate measures of body fat using submersion and it is very close to the real answer. So give that a go and I imagine you will be pleasantly surprised.

Anto58, I tried this calculation in centimeters first and got 50%, which seems like way too much, then tried it in inches and got 19.5%, which seems like too little for a 57 year old woman with a BMI of 20.4, it doesn’t seem like my body fat % would go below 20% unless I was *way* thinner. Most of my fat is in my belly and boobs (hip size 2 sizes smaller than dress (bust) size and 3 sizes smaller than waist size), which don’t seem to come into the equation anywhere. What do you think? Does the equation work for apple-shaped people, too?

Thanks Anto, but you have completely done my head in….measuring, remeasuring, recalculating to pounds and inches, trying different BF calculators.
I agree with Franfit. I get quite screwy results. Don’t care. I’ll leave it to the boy to do later. I’m happy in my size small clothes so can’t be too far off.
Thanks for the advice, though. And the compliment re my activity level. I do try to walk briskly and up stairs whenever possible.
Off on a long train journey today 40 minutes, then 4 hours), but have to do a lot of walking as part of the trip. Public transport is a great way to keep fit.
    Cheers
    PVE

Franfit, apologies should have made it clear measurements were in inches. With a BMI of 20, I wouldn’t be surprised that you come out with such a low body fat percentage, though I can see what you mean about the formula not taking account of apple shapes. What the book says is: for most people the test is within 2 percentage points of the “real thing”. The exceptions are where someone is either very very fit, where it can overestimate the fat percentage by 3-5 percentage points or where they have a low BMI but are not fit, in which case it can underestimate by an equivalent amount. Hope this helps.

    Hi!

Speedy- Congrats Babe- I hope that is the hardest stone you ever have to lose!
Now concentrate on getting better. No real fasting until you are healed.

As far as your love of bread-sometimes it’s just so good! Have you tried Ezekiel bread? It’s pretty low carb , for bread.

So rest, relax, and feel entitled to take care of yourself for a while. You deserve it.

Anto58, that’s me, low BMI but not fit, also carry most of my fat above the hips, so I would bet it underestimates for me by about 5% at least. Am only able to get a little bit fit because of medical problems, so I keep working at it, slowly. At least I can walk a whole lot more than I could a few months ago — so maybe most of what fitness I do have is in my calves, lol. Still it’s a very interesting equation.

Nicky- Ohio. LOL-what a secretive piece of work I can be.

Anto58- you made my day! 27%- my scales never say that, nor the places on the internet that will calculate it for you. Even if it’s 5% off, I’m happy. I thought it was closer to 38.

Boo- you aren’t the only person here with a vibe. I was going to ask if anyone uses cider vinegar and if it helps. PVE?—next is coconut oil?

I also love that we talk to each other from around the world, even if I think Speedy lives in Denmark. 😉 🙁 🙂

Hi PreciousBooBoo and all the other LOACA’s, the LOACA Lurker is still here … still lurking! I’m still reading the posts on this thread when I can, but I’m going through a really busy phase at the moment and am chasing my tail. Also, I’m not doing very well on the FD front, so have taken to lurking even deeper into the shadows ;o)

Despite that, I try to keep up with this thread and am loving so many of the humourous characters on here.

I’ll be back but, in the meantime, keeeep fasting!

Hi Precious booboo. I saw your post above saying that you suffered with Candida and I wondered if you’d ever tried something called Candida Support? You can buy it on Amazon, it’s in an orange tub costs just over £15 and it works brilliantly. I’d suffered for ages with thrush, mostly linked to my menstrual cycle and after trying the usual creams, oral medicines, tea tree oil, etc etc I found candida support, read the reviews and never looked back. It took a while to work, but then when you read about candida it really takes a hold of your body, but when it did finally clear it up I’ve hardly had any further episodes. If I feel it starting I just start taking them again and usually within a few days it’s cleared up. I would say give them a go if you haven’t already, nothing to lose.

    Karen

    Good morning and PVE,
I thought you may like this poem and even if you have seen it some may not have.
When I Am Old. I love it. JIP

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat that doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me,
And I shall spend my pension
    on brandy and summer gloves
    And satin sandals,
and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired,
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells,
And run my stick along the public railings,
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people’s gardens,
    And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat,
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go,
Or only bread and pickle for a week,
And hoard pens and pencils and beer mats
    and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry,
And pay our rent and not swear in the street,
And set a good example for the children.
We will have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practise a little now?
    So people who know me
are not too shocked and surprised,
    When suddenly I am old
    and start to wear purple!

Hi PVE, I agree, all though I have lost 4 stone and gone from (in some clothes) a size 20/18 I am in size 12’s my boobs are still out in front with a size 34 F cup and nothing I do will make them any smaller. but I still like what I see in the mirror after all those years of not liking it. I think my walking keeps thinking of what I eat and as it’s been said before coming on here keeps me out of the kitchen too. JIP

    Love that poem 🙂

I do too. What’s the one with red hats?

    Today, I cracked the 130’s.

Me too. Thanks, JIP, for the reminder of what is already a favourite. It’s up there with Philip Larkin’s ‘This Be the Verse’, which I won’t quote from in polite company, but with which I totally identify with. Here’s a link:

Larkin was invited, but refused, to take up the appointment of Poet Laureate. I wonder whether it was because he knew he couldn’t have resisted reciting it to the other Hermaj, the one at Buck House. 🙂

Just to prove that he didn’t just write rude poems (and that I’m not a total philistine!) here are links to two more, each very beautiful and very moving:

    Enjoy!

    Thanks SO much, JIP!
I was tickled purple with the poem. I wear a black hat, not red, but am certainly practicing to be a grumpy old woman. Don’t really care what people think anymore (maybe I never did!)
Got your post on my phone while away last night, so didn’t have computer access to reply until I got home.
    Thank you again.
What a lovely supportive group LOACA are. Thanks girls
    Cheers

Hello All Ladies Of A Certain Age!

Only have time today to read the posts really; yesterday was really busy. But I think that’s normal don’t you all? We don’t want to be on here a lot when the weather is so much better – in Scotland that means it is NOT RAINING!

So sorry to not be able to respond to everyone’s interesting comments (will do when I have more time-love your poem JIP) but absolutely had to find time to do the following!

piper – In her usual totally understated way; has just informed us that she is now officially under the Ten Ton Limit! So she is now NINE STONE SOMETHING! Whooooooooo! And another ten down in lbs!

So I am going to award piper with our newly created award

    THE MAGICAL MILESTONE MARKER AWARD!!!!

piper – is special in that she is the first to receive this award and that personally makes me very happy.

    BooBooxx

    Hello Speedy! and all!

Our next award goes to someone who has been extremely brave in very difficult circumstances. Not only did she have to have an operation she was very concerned about but she had to undergo it TWICE !

Now that is bravery Speedy; no matter that you, quite naturally, shed many tears – who wouldn’t?

So I am going to award you with our special new award for going where man has never gone before!
(you are a bit of a trekkie aren’t you?!)

The Big Bumper Bravery Award – On this occasion called

    THE **/!^^!!** STONE GONE AWARD!!!

Bloody Well Done Speedy! For you especially; it is only
    Onwards and Upwards!

    BooBooxx

    Thank you so much PBB!
I would like to thank my dog, my anaesthetist, my urologist but special warm thanks to my friends and supporters on here who gave me courage! 🙂

And huge congratulations to Piper, who is very deserving of that hard won award!

    xx

    HaHaHa Speedy!

It did occur to me, after posting, that I should have requested acceptance speechs from you both! Clever you for pre-empting me! :))

Just noticed a spelling BooBoo! That should have said ‘speeches’!

    Boo,

My acceptance speech: In the words of Elvis “Thank you, thank you very much.”
lol, I’ve felt like a fraud since I posted 140.6, because that was my new low weight, and it didn’t stick around very long. I bounce around, usually between 1-2 lbs., but sometimes as much as 3. It took me til now, this week, to see 140 point anything. Is it too soon to say 138.6? I am smiling, and even if it doesn’t say that again for another 3 weeks, I’ve got patience. You’ve still lost more weight than me; how about a prize for 20 lbs.?!

and about speeches, good grief! Once I was posting late at night and told Nika something like ‘Sorry to here about you dad’. I was mortified, which is a total overreaction. No big deal. 🙂

Well done speedy on the award and I wish you a speedy recovery too. Onwards and upwards in health and downwards on the scales. JIP

Hi piper, I think this 139 and 138 is like a chain around our necks, I want to see my scales say those magic numbers too but they seems to be off the scales. LOL. we can do this together with a little help from our friends which is another song. Cannot for the life of me think who sang it. Keeeeep fassssssting. JIP

    Hi Karen250463

Thank you very much for taking the time to try to help with my Candida problem; I really do appreciate it.

Without wanting to get too personal; do you think your Candida had become systemic? I think you will know that means, it invades your body and takes a real foothold. The more obvious symptoms of it like thrush etc become much more low key and it becomes a permanent underlying problem.

I will definitely try the Candida Support; it‘s a very reasonable price for a change. I have bought some very expensive stuff in my time over many years and you had to take them long term and it really did add up every month. But I have to say, most stuff had no quantifiable affect and I have always had a stomach that is disproportionate to the rest of my body (I’m sorry if this is too much information for people; I said in my original post that I found talking about it embarrassing….:)).
Having said that, when I am out and about, I see many other women who are apple shaped and seem to unfortunately share the same fate.

Also, when you are taking the CS; do you have to keep away from the foods/drinks that Candida loves? You know, wine(!), cheese, bread, mushrooms etc.

If the Candida support helps you in any way then I’m happy to help – it’s worth a shot and you’re right it’s not too expensive to use even on a long term basis. I think you may be right in that mine had taken a real hold, I’ve read loads about it (and sounds like you have too) even to the point of downloading a book about it on kindle and it was the book that said about what can eliminate candida from the body. It recommended Pau D’arco and capriylic acid and both are in the CS supplement (plus a few other things which must help). The book also said to keep away from sugar, fermented products, wine and mushrooms because they feed the candida and keep it thriving in the body. Must admit like you I love my wine and drink it a few times a week and I also love mushrooms. Don’t eat much bread/cheese though and whilst taking the tablets I didn’t stop eating and drinking what I enjoyed and the thrush still went. I’m convinced in my case it was connected in some way to my menstrual cycle and always appeared about the week before and lasted about 1-2 weeks so at it’s worst I wasn’t free of it for much of the month really. Touch wood I only get the odd flare up of it where as before it was every month, I start taking the CS straight away and it usually goes within a week or so. If you get some I’d give it a couple of months to give it them a chance to work and see how you go, maybe if it helps you’ll just need to take them ‘as and when’. Let me know how you go with them anyway (they have got damn good reviews on Amazon so they must be working for alot of people), I’ll keep my fingers crossed anyway.
    Karen

Hi PBB, I used to have awful trouble in my early 20 twenties with this problem and then it was drink plenty of water was the order of the day not much difference then as now. Also cranberry juice is good, I suppose you have had a urine infection test? My memory is getting awful but I still remember that time. Have you tried yoghurt not to eat of course!!!!. Hope your better soon. They can send man to the moon but cannot find a cure for this. JIP

    Hi Karen and JIP

Only have time to say – What are you like JIP?!! and yes I have tried yoghurt but not for consumption…..

Will respond to you later Karen; off for a long walk now. It’s not raining so we have to make hay!
