  • Reading about all the caravans and gardening is making me anxious for spring! Here in Pennsylvania the weather is unpredictable this time of year. On Saturday it was sunny and 70 yesterday it was cold and rainy. When the kids were little we’d have several nice days in a row so I’d wash their winter coats and put them away. Inevitably as soon as winter things were put away we’d get cold snowy weather again! Yesterday I noticed some flowers coming up so I’m hopeful. 🌷🌷🌷

Cinque, what a fun movie to watch together with your sisters! It’s a wonderful movie. When I took my granddaughters to see it Caroline was sitting on my lap. I’m glad she was because I had to bury my face in her hair to keep from sobbing out loud at one point! You’ll love it.

Rachel, it’ll be difficult I’m sure, to join in the meals and not overdo. Just be mindful of what’s on your plate and nibble slowly as Cinque suggested. That 8.2 pounds in a month is awesome! Nice going!

I had a hard time staying on my fast yesterday. It could have been the cold rainy weather and me being tired after the big weekend. But I had to talk myself out of picking all day long! I kept thinking of Audrey’s little ditty, Little pickers wear bigger knickers! That helped me stick to it.

    Have a great day ladies.

    Patty

PatriPer317, I’m not too far away…just east in NJ/NYC, and yes, our weather has been very strange.

Down a little over a pound in my first week. 8-10 to go. Planning for FD tomorrow. My husband has been in England for the past week so it’s been easy to plan for just one. He comes home tomorrow.

“Little pickers wear bigger knickers.” I’m going to remember that one.

And Cinque, the clams were so good that I think I’m going to make them again tonight, even on a non-fast day. I have more tomatoes, arugula and parsley. I’ll add some olive oil, and maybe a few strands of Explore Asia bean pasta. Maybe I’ll use the Miso Ginger broth. (Must get more from Trader Joe’s)

FD yesterday and my second water only fast. Tomorrow will be my second FD this week and I plan on that being a water fast one too. I have given up normal tea and coffee on my fast days and now only drink water or lemon and ginger tea. I find it easier not to eat on fast days. My soup now gets enjoyed on my NFD.

Usually I only weigh myself on Fridays after two normal eating days but this time after such a big drop in my weight I couldn’t stop myself from getting on the scales every morning just in case the pounds came back.
Saturday I put on a pound, Sunday I dropped 2 and a half, Monday I put a pound and a half back on, so that means I was back to the weight I reached on Friday Woo hoo πŸ˜€

We go away in the van Friday and I must admit I am nervous about being able to do 5.2 well enough not to gain weight, I’m not expecting to loose weight next week as I can’t see me not overeating a bit on my normal days. I keep telling myself not to worry as I can always do 4.3 the week after but my brain still won’t stop niggling at me. 😟
It might be Spring here but it’s still blimmin cold so we will need our warmest winter gear for our planned walks on the beach. β˜ƒπŸ’¨β˜”οΈ

    Hi everyone,
SteppingOut, why not just chalk this caravan week up as a fact finding tour. Notice how hard or easy it is to fast, what the pressure points, or trigger points, are on the other days, do the best you can, but it is a bit of a mine field, so just check out where the mines are, and then you can plan for a better run next time.
That’s the thing about this being long term, and way of life. There is room to trial, and fail, and think about how to do better next time.
good luck! We’ll be interested to hear how it goes!

K-Lo I have never eaten clams, but you make me want to try.

Patty congrats on getting through a hard fast day. Being in that picky mood makes it so hard!
I did see Inside Out before, with a child, and talked to one sister about it, and she was so interested that I got a copy for us all to watch. We come from a very dysfunctional family, it is a miracle we gradually became close. But that means we have very interesting conversations about psychology etc, so I am looking forward to watching it again, and with them.

Sending best wishes to everyone! ⭐️🌟⭐️🌟⭐️

Hi Ladies, Today (Thursday) is a fast day for me and it’s been good so far. Two of my sisters and I went to work out together then out to breakfast for my birthday. We went to a place that gives you a free breakfast for your birthday. I didn’t really like the choices for the free breakfast so my sisters paid for a better one for me. Sweet! And you might think that it ruined my fast day but I’m going to be doing it a bit different this time. I’ll fast from that breakfast until supper time tomorrow, about 30 hours. I haven’t done a long one like this but I’m confident that I can do it. One of my birthday gifts was a packet of tuna steaks so Dennis and I will have those for supper tomorrow and it’ll give me something to look forward to. I love tuna steaks and they’ll taste even better when I’m good and hungry!

I started a nutrition class yesterday. Looks like it’s going to be interesting. The instructors are a registered dietitian and a registered nurse. They’re both vegetarians so they are encouraging the group to move towards a more plant based diet. I’m ok with that but I won’t give up meat or fish completely. I always like learning and gaining new information so I’m looking forward to the weekly sessions.

I heard today that you can cook an avocado pit for 2 hours at 120C then pulverize it to eat in a smoothie, oatmeal, etc. Supposedly has lots of nutrients in it. Have any of you ever tried this or heard about it?

Off to walk my dog. It’s a beautiful day today. I hear we might be getting snow this weekend or maybe snow for Easter.

Cinque, so glad you and your sisters are close now. My sisters and I are closer now than ever. We have one brother, who we love dearly, but he doesn’t live near us so we don’t get to see much of him. When he hears about our girl time he feigns indignation at having been left out. “Are you forgetting you have another sibling??” or “I guess my invitation got lost in the mail!” Poor fellow.

    Have a good’n everyone.

    Patty

Hi, I am finding the weight loss very variable. however one month in i realise that the weight gain around my very erratic menstrual cycle is just temporary. I lost 4 pounds thd first week then 2 the next then put on 5 which very nearly destroyed my resolve and i had two days of crisps, bread rolls and chocolate. however this week i have lost 6. so overall great news despite my hitch! going forward this month (2) i am going to try and exercise in my bad week and not be put off by any “weight gain” to see if i can combat the effects of thd bloating, fluid retention etc. I have been very overweight for 3 decades and this is the only time i have stuck at something for a month. I love the food and haven’t felt bothered by hunger..apart from on my down week. fingers crossed for month 2.

Interesting thing about hunger. I find that the fast days make me not think too much about hunger on the non-fast days.

My older son spent a semester in Spain a few years ago. He said it changed his eating habits significantly in that people do not snack between meals. It’s just not a thing. And anyone eating or drinking coffee on the street is immediately recognized as American. He just learned to live with hunger until mealtime. He ate great food, drank a lot of beer and wine, and came home very thin.

Cinque, there’s very little shellfish that I don’t LOVE. Shrimp, lobster, clams, oysters, mussels. A fishmonger opened a few blocks from my house and I am eating very well. Salmon for lunch today.

    Hello everyone,
From my daughters apartment on Sydney. It is early in the morning and I am on grandma duty. They are packing to move back to Melbourne next week. I thought my last visit might my final one, but it turns out this one is.

    Hi menopausemiddleaged! Welcome here! πŸ’
Yes the weight loss is variable! What a frustrating glitch! But it is all about long term sustainability, so you know you’ll get there at the end! Lots of good wishes for this month!

K-Lo it is the same to me. My feeling of hunger has really changed over the months, and I go much longer between eating on normal days, without even noticing.
That is so interesting about your son in Spain.
Do you live by the sea? I want to eat more seafood, but it is expensive here, and I want to eat sustainably and I have a few things to get over ( anything with a rubbery texture) so I am tentative about getting it into my diet.

Patty Belated Happy Birthday Wishes! πŸŽ‰πŸŽπŸŽ‚πŸ˜ŠπŸ’βοΈπŸŽˆ
Tthat nutrition course sounds excellent. I am a great supporter of Michael Pollans simple eating guidelines
    “Eat food
    Not too much
    Mostly plants”
In fact the documentary about it was on tv the other day! I was a vegetarian for over thirty years, but I eat a bit of meat now.

I did have such a good time with my sisters! We got together for a meal at our favourite noodle place on Wednesday and had a good catch up. Then on Thursday we watched the movie and had a good talk about it. Then I rested while the three others went to an archeology lecture. Then yesterday morning we met for breakfast and had the best chat of all ( life, the universe, everything) before two sisters went off to the flower show, and the third dropped me at the airport and headed home to the country.
We talked about how lucky we are to have each other.

Must go now, coffee time. Best wishes everyone! 😊

Hey K-Lo… I lived in Spain, too – some years ago, but it IS a healthy pace of life, especially regarding food. Their big meal of the day is the comida at 2:30-3:00pm. Makes so much send rather than the way we did it here in the US – BIG meal at night, sometimes as late as 8 at night only a few hours before bed. It makes no sense!

Cinque… I love seafood and like you, wish we lived closer to the sea so it would be more readily available and cheaper!

I didn’t weigh today, last two days were business trips/training. Big evening meal, desserts for all… snacks like cookies and brownies during the day… grrrrrrr. I’m back on a Fast day today, but still. < sigh > I am just terrible with temptation. There was one of the gals there, a slip of a thing, she passed on all the bad stuff and got salads at all the meals. I know it’s what I should do, but why don’t I have any control? Actually, maybe that’s why I love the fasting – I’m an all-or-nothing kind of person in my life anyway, right? So the fasting part suits me just fine, better than all sort of constant denial of yummy things.

Ah well… nice to check in here with everyone! I’m off for some tea! Rachel

K-Lo, I’m just reading you are in NJ? I grew up in Somerset county, my folks are still there, even though I’m in MA. Small world!! <3 R

    Hi,

I’m 57 and on the other side of menopause, and on HRT to control especially the hot flashes and moodiness. I have always had to keep an eye on what I eat but have pretty much managed to maintain a reasonable form. However, with menopause and lack of caution as I dealt with big changes in my life, the fat has piled on.

I am being careful to say “fat” and not weight, because my weight has barely budged, but believe me, I am not slender at my 64 kilos.

I tried the fast diet about two years ago and was elated to see how quickly I seemed to be losing centimeters – the weight loss concerned me much less. I did have to be sure to walk every day for an hour to get things to budge, but they budged. The women in the “ladies gym” I went to commented on my new look, and I hadn’t told anyone I was on the new diet. Fabulous! …until the head of the gym did the biweekly check on how much fat I had lost. I was eagerly looking forward to hearing how much was gone…but she told me that in fact I was not losing fat, but muscle. The proportion of fat to muscle had INCREASED since starting the 5:2 Fast Diet.

Stopped the diet immediately. Since then I tried watching my fat intake, still walking for an hour a day, cutting out gluten, cutting out all sugar, stopping wine, high-protein, all kinds of things, giving up for a while and eating anything at all, then Atkins…BIG mistake, I put on even more fat, all this while remaining at the same weight of 64 kilos. I have now scheduled an appointment to see about liposuction because I just can’t bear to look at those ugly bulges any more in the mirror.

Reading all your posts has given me some ideas – I have joined a gym again, and maybe exercising on fast days will help. I am also hopeful that if some of you see hot flashes disappearing with this diet, that maybe with this diet I could come off the HRT that I know from Atkin’s book contributes a lot to making it hard to lose fat. Also having a group of LOACAs to check in with and get a little moral support from would be great.

    Cecile

    Hi Cecile,
I am an unusual 5:2er in that I don’t worry about measurements and scales, so I am not into that side of it all, but your history surprised me because the research I have read supports 5:2 because it is fat, and particularly visceral fat, that is lost, rather than muscle. How good is the gym’s equipment for measuring fat/muscle? Is it that pod you go in?
Hopefully some of the others will have more useful suggestions.

Hi Rachel, hi everyone else! 🌸

    Hi Cinque,

    Thanks for answering my post!

Yes, I know, I thought that was the whole point of 5:2 as well.

No, the equipment consisted of a gadget I needed to hold in my hands at a certain distance from my body and it measured body fat that way.

I think I am at the stage now of going back to 5:2 because it was the only diet I ever followed that made a visible difference, the stress on visible, and I will make a point of going to this “real” gym – the “ladies gym” had a system whereby you switched to a machine, then did cardio, then switched to a machine, did cardio, for 30 minutes a day. The machines didn’t do much to build muscle, I found. Hopefully if I firm and build muscle at the same time I eat sensibly I will get to some kind of healthy result despite my resisting menopaused body.

Morning from a sunny Wales …

Just a quick post to let you know I am ok…. we return from our caravan on Thursday so will do a proper catch up then.

Welcome to our newcomers….i have weighed in am at same weight as last week so very happy with that….

    Love to you all.

    Audrey

    Good morning all,
I have been dilatory in reporting my progress and chatting, sorry.

I have discovered juicing. So on my fast days I will now have a couple of low calorie veggie juices to keep me going. Will see how I get on, starting today.

K-Lo I live in Spain, and it’s quite true, the Spanish do not snack between meals, or eat in the streets. It was one of the first things I noticed when I first came here, I can’t speak for the big cities as I live just outside a medium sized village in the country.

Weight is coming off slowly but surely, yay. 7lbs so far.

Have a lovely day, everyone. X

On my non FD, I had to remind myself to eat during the day. Dinner party….cheese and crackers, Irish whiskey, wine, ice cream….

And down again today. I got on the scale four times because I just didn’t believe it. 126.8. Haven’t seen that 6 in a while. Dinner company tonight. FD tomorrow

Hi again Cecile, maybe that fat counting contraption was a bit dodgy. I think your new plan sounds good. We will cheer you along.

Audrey, lovely to hear from you. VERY glad you are okay. A week at the caravan must be just what you needed. And you must have been beautifully restrained when the fish and chip van comes around!

Hi Itwhat, slow and steady is all you need! Hello to beautiful Spain.

K-Lo nice result after a dinner party like that! Enjoy that 6 it will be turning into a five soon and you may never see it again….. Or are you at your healthy weight, and 126 is where you will stay?

I’m skipping a fast day 😒πŸ˜₯πŸ˜ͺπŸ˜“πŸ˜ Though. It’s just a bit too chaotic, I’m a bit too crook. Maybe I won’t eat much anyway, but I’ll just see what feel like.

    Best wishes all! 🌾🌿🌾🌿🌾

Cinque, 118 – 120 is my goal. 126 is not an UNhealthy weight, but my wardrobe prefers me lower.

I’m at a similar stage K-Lo, keen to get to the leaner end of my healthy range. 😊

Hi all, K-Lo, it’s interesting what you were saying about people in Spain not eating between meals. I’ve just recently begun substituting in the schools and I’m appalled at how much kids in school eat! I’ve only been working in elementary levels but even at those levels the kids are allowed access to their lockers and backpacks whenever they want a snack. I was surprised at the number of kids who would get up right in the middle of a class, head to their lockers, and grab a bag of potato chips, cookies, crackers, whatever they brought. Kids who wanted a snack but hadn’t brought one were allowed to get one from the teacher. When we were in school we never had a snack. Just lunch. When lunch was over that was it for the day until we got home. It truly was an eye opener for me. Makes me more determined than ever to be a good example for my grandkids. Two of them (6 and 7yrs) spent the day with us. Because they were outside playing all afternoon they ate their dinner with gusto. The little one especially continually remarked on how good the dinner was and how everything on the plate was her favorite. Roast chicken, rice, carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower. It makes me feel good to see them enjoy good food.

This week I tried my first 30 hour liquid-only fast. It was successful. And I felt great while I was doing it. Felt great ever since. I’m going to try doing it for each of my fast days this week. The trick is to keep busy.

Cinque, sorry to hear you’re missing a fast day. Hope everything works out for you. What does it mean that you’re a bit too crook?

Audrey, glad to hear you did well while caravanning.

Keep up the good work everyone!! Enjoy the upcoming week. Patty

Had another successful fast day today (although it’s only 4:45p.m. so it’s not technically over). I substituted in a first grade classroom today. All 6 and 7 year olds. I was afraid I wouldn’t make it through the day with fasting but it was perfectly fine. I was so busy I barely even thought about eating except when the kids were having lunch. And when I got home. I think that’s more of a habit, though, and not actual hunger. When we took the kids out to play it was snowing! Bah! It’s spring now, it’s supposed to be getting warmer.

How’s everything with everyone else? Haven’t heard from most of you in a while. Hope all’s well. Patty

    Hi Patty!
I haven’t been off caravanning, but I have been at my daughter’s doing all I could to help them pack up their household, and now I am home with my little ganddaughter, her parents will fly down tomorrow. She hasn’t been away from them before, so she is very clingy. I’m squeezing this post in while she is napping.
Q When I had a toddler, how did I get ANYTHING done?

I’m horrified by that schools snack policy Patty! I don’t think any Australian schools would allow that. I hope not. We need to do better by our kids!
    Your grandkids have it right!

Congratulations on your 30 hour liquid fast! I am glad it worked so well!

Crook is Australian slang for being unwell. I’ve got a bit of a UPTI (Upper respiratory tract infection) but not bad enough to go to the doctor, and my CFS symptoms are all worse because I have been overdoing it. Taking it very slow and easy now.

Must go. Best wishes to everyone!

Ladies, I am delighted to discover this forum for those of us of a certain age.

Cinque, thank you for your supportive words!

I have done my first FD that transpired without too much hassle, and I am doing the second today. 30 minutes of brisk walking and 30 minutes of machine workouts at the gym to help it along. I’m also going to try doing 3 days a week of fasting because it isn’t too hard I find – a cup of tea with a smidge of milk and an apple is enough to sustain life at midday.

Im going on the assumption that the machine to measure fat was wonky.

    Best wishes to all!

Hello everyone! It is fairly early morning on this point on the Earth’s surface.
I’ve had a couple of lovely, but busy days looking after the cutest grandchild in the world, and now her parents have arrived, so it is all on my little flat.

So lovely to hear your first fast day, this round, went well Cecile. I bet you will be fit and lean in no time.

    Has it stopped snowing Patty?

Audrey will be having her last day at the caravan, I hope it is a lovely one.

I’m having my first cup of tea for the day. Bliss!

I have just joined. I have not tried the regime yet. I was on a weight watchers diet and lost 20lbs but i gave up in November. So i have been back at the ice cream and chocolate. I tend to nibble in evenings. I need help and support. I am 69. Walk a mile a day but no other exercise. So tell me will i feel desperately hungry on fast days ?

The “desperate” hunger is brief, and if you can distract yourself, it will pass. I have been following this plan for only two weeks. I am 60. I’ve lost about 3 pounds and have another 8-10 to go.

I do find that the fast days have actually shrunk my appetite on non fast days.

    Hi Irenc, Hi K-Lo!
Irenc, you are going to have to try and see! I was really scared, and then found my first fast day fine! I was so exhilarated at the end of the day! As K-Lo said, the hunger pangs are brief, they come in waves, and you can just keep telling yourself that you can eat what you like the next day.

Ofcourse, ‘eating what you like’ is meant to be normal healthy eating, so hopefully your icecream and chocolate will be special treats (Oh look it is Easter, world’s biggest chocolate festival! πŸ˜‰ )

I hope you give it a try and tell us how it goes, we love to have more people here sharing the journey!

Hi all… Hi Irenc, welcome! I found that the first couple of times I had a fast day I would sometimes get a little gnawing in the belly, but psychologically I knew that I could eat more the next day – it wasn’t too hard to get through. I DID find and continue to find that I have so much energy on fast days!

I have a question for the vets on this thread… it has been two weeks and I haven’t lost an ounce (I weighed this morning exactly what I did 16 days ago). I did well in the first 5 weeks, but these last two+ weeks have been a huge disappointment. I have been very faithful doing 4:3 and have even been working hard to stay under 2000 calories on the non-fast days. Is this just a plateau? What has been your experience with plateaus? I have also been much better with my walking, getting well over 10k steps on 3-4 days a week, 7-8k on the others.

Today is my third fast day of the week (Sun, Mon, Wed (today)) and I am going to do a water-only fast from 5pm this Thursday evening until 5pm on Friday evening, so although I know that’s not a real fast day – for some programs it does count. I’m just feeling sort of disappointed. I was doing my best not to get too discouraged, and thought your experiences might help me sort out these feelings…

Thanks! and Yay, we are now more than half-way through the week! best – Rachel

I did have some wine tonight but it was necessary.

A hard boiled egg for breakfast
Miso with some veggies at noon.
Dinner — some canned salmon with chopped pickles wrapped in nori sheets. And a few ounces of Pinot Noir. I think I actually stayed within 500 but I like to skip the alcohol on fast days

Hi, I’m just here to introduce myself – hi to everyone.

I started 5:2 last week and didn’t lose anything, so changing to 4:3 for this week and see how it goes.

I also have CFS/ME, which makes exercise difficult.

But, fasting is not as hard as I thought it would be. Fingers crossed I can lose a bit.

    26lbs to lose.

    Welcome here Wellsprungalice!
Don’t worry about those pesky scales! Just keep at it. 4:3 if you like, or go back to 5:2 if it is more sustainable. Unless you are eating extra on your non fast days, you will lose weight.
Give yourself four weeks without worrying and then see what the scales say.

If the scales keep being vexatious, then do a bit of
“How go I feel?” Lighter? Emptier? or
“How do I look?” Mirror? Best Outfit? or
“How do my clothes fit? Comfy? Doing up easier?

PS I forgot to say, hello fellow CFSer!
I am unable to exercise too. A little walk, or some gentle yoga stretches on a good day, otherwise it is just pottering around.

    Good morning everyone,

Fell in the ditch and had too much to eat when out for lunch! Damage control today, fast.
I had a go on a mini trampoline the other day and am hooked, have ordered one for home. Great fun and gives one a good workout even if, like me, can’t quite get both feet off the ground unless I hang onto something to keep my balance. No doubt with practice should improve.
I have unearthed my Nordic walking poles and now tear along whilst walking the doggies, much to their surprise, so used to me ambling.
Keep me going ladies, determined to get into my tankini without the stomach being the only thing seen, with a pr of eyes above it.

    Have a lovely day everyone.
    X

    Morning ladies,

Came home yesterday evening haven’t had chance to catch up on all your posts yet but welcome to our new members. …

Have had a weigh in have stayed the same so very happy at that. …

Will be in touch again soon busy busy washing etc today…

    Audrey

Yay Audrey, well done you! πŸŽ‰
    Welcome home! 🎈🌟

Hi Itwhat, the trampoline sounds great fun, your skiing sticks even better! And somehow I completely missed tankinis, and I had to look them up! Then I giggled at your image.

I also had too much – for my supper – on a fast day! 😧 Never again!

Thanks for the welcome home cinque…. we have been very busy the caravan pitch was a big mess…. very waterlogged and the garden full of weeds.

I did realise when I got home that some of the weeds were in fact forget me nots haha…..

Will catch up later can’t believe how much washing I have here! …

    Audrey

Good morning ladies, welcome to the newcomers Irenc and wellsprungalice. It’s kind of difficult to get started but well worth the trouble. I do 5:2 and have since starting. Most FD I eat one small meal but I did a 30 hour liquid fast last week and it was successful. The trick is to keep busy and focused on something other than eating. Have something on hand such as broth, tea, coffee, or even celery to ward off the hunger pangs. They don’t last long. I like celery because it’s very low cal and it gives the satisfaction of chewing. I feel so much more energetic since starting this on both fast days and non-fast days. I try to eat around 1200-1500 cals on non-FD.

K-Lo, I like your line about wine. I enjoy having wine in the evening but also try to avoid it on fast days. 🍷

Cinque, I can’t understand why my granddaughter is visiting you! When I read that you were looking after the cutest granddaughter in the world, that describes my granddaughters to a tee! πŸ˜‰ πŸ‘Ά I have my youngest, Sylvie, today. She is not feeling well and needs to go to the doctor today. She might have pink eye and can’t go to school with it. Her parents are working so I volunteered to be the one to take her. I won’t be doing an substituting today. But that’s ok. I’d rather spend the time with this one than a classroom of others. It has stopped snowing. Yesterday it was warm enough that I ended up hanging my coat in a tree while I was walking the dog and fetched it on the way home. But in the evening it was very cold again. It’s crazy weather this time of year.

Itwhat, I also fell into a ditch on Tuesday. I’d had a normal breakfast and lunch then I was too busy for supper and had to go to my class on nutrition. After class (ended at 8p.m.)I felt hungry so I stopped and bought a chicken thigh and roasted red peppers. After that I stopped and got a slice of stromboli. When I got home I had some spaghetti and meatballs. And then, I had some popcorn!!! Oh my. After a class on nutrition! Must be all the talk about food was too much for me to handle. 😑 That was a very deep ditch to climb out of. Yesterday was not a FD so I ate, but kept it at a minimum. Today is a fast day. I’m thankful for that.

Audrey, good job on staying on track during your vacation. Sounds like you had a pretty busy time. I bet you’re happy to be home. 🏠

    Have a good one everyone!

    Patty

Despite the wine, i had another nice drop today. 126.4. I am so pumped. Found the instant miso packets at a local store for my office stash.

My 30th wedding anniversary is April 20. Wondering if I can get back to my bridal weight of 121 by then. A goal!

    Hi Ladies,

Just wanted to “weigh in” (ha ha ha) on the story of not snacking between meals.

I lived in France for almost 30 years, and like in Spain, the habit there is to eat only at mealtime, and to also eat much smaller portions than in the UK or in the States. It was readily demonstrated by the fact that when I went to the States for a couple of months I would come back to France having almost out sized my clothes, and without any effort whatsoever – just getting back in the routine of French life – it would all come off again. Yes, I know, I was in my thirties.

But as part of my new program, I am eating the French way now – small portions, no snacks, although I can’t quite give up that glass of wine with dinner yet…

Cecile, I’m totally with you on the France/Spain way of living… happened to me every time I came home from Spain for a few weeks – just like you, I’d put on weight in the US but then it would take no time at all to drop it once I was back in Spain! Admittedly, I also walked a whole lot more in Spain, just naturally, as part of my days. European small-city living never required a car! And no reason to give up that wine with dinner!

K-Lo, I make up that you can reach that bridal weight! Congrats on your anniversary, ours is April 30… and I’m a full 46 pounds from my bridal weight, so not likely for me! LoL! I’m cheering you on!

Patty, I do the same with celery… and I think your advice about staying busy and distracted (in the best way) is important for success. How long have you been doing 5:2? I also love how well you recovered from your β€˜fall in the ditch’. That can be hard to do… we are programmed, it seems, to beat ourselves up when we slip – instead of saying, ok, it was a deep ditch and now I’m out of it! Brava!

    Welcome home Audrey!

Cinque, I appreciated your advice to WellSprungAlice about vexing scales… I need to remember them, too, since my scales are not budging.

So I’ve upped my number of steps in a day to ensure I am over 10k every day, and I’ll give it another 2 weeks of faithful 4:3 fasting before I get too discouraged about the scale not moving.

Looking forward to the Easter weekend – going to NJ to see my dear parents and my sibs and their families, should be a great time. My husband is still traveling so he’ll miss Easter but arrives home on Wednesday… yay! XO – Rachel

Rachel, thanks for the encouragement. I too walk a great deal. My daily commute includes over two miles of walking and LOTS of stairs. I loathe raw celery with a white hot passion, but I love pickles!

Oooooo, pickles! I LOVE pickles… what a great idea! Dill pickles are my favorites, but they’re all good.

I made my own pickles recently by adding a sliced cucumber to the leftover pickling liquid. They turned out really well! I used some last night in my FD dinner of canned salmon rolled up in seaweed….a sort of sushi roll.

Well first day of fast was ok but a friend gave me a slice of carrot cake which i could not resist. Prior to that i had 1 orange , thin slice of bread and small peice of chicken , salad ans salmon. Guess it was not a fast day after all.

    Evening ladies

I have sent Ian to work and was happily planning a quiet Easter break with a couple of fast days..

Vicky phoned so glad we are back and can she and the girls call in Sunday after church for lunch? Oh and could they stay overnight whilst her and Steve go out…..so perhaps just the one fast day now….

Hehe families anyway have a great Easter whatever you are doing and wherever you may be…

Keep in touch and dont eat too many eggs….πŸ˜†

    Audrey

K-Lo, I love pickles, too, especially dill. I think dill pickles are pretty low in calories. And they’re crunchy. That’s a great idea for using the leftover pickle juice. I’ll have to try it. Maybe with beets or another veggie rather than cucumbers. Hope you are successful in making your bridal weight by your anniversary. I think I’ll set the same goal. Although it won’t be this year as I’m about 45lbs past my bridal weight of 128. And I’m almost three inches shorter than I was then! I’ll be celebrating my 36th anniversary this year. And I feel so young!

Rachel, I’ve been doing 5:2 3 months, since December 28th. I like it better all the time. I haven’t felt so good and energetic in a long time. Last night I was out with friends that I haven’t seen since starting 5:2 and they all commented on how I’m looking. It felt great. Who needs scales with friends like that? I’ve gone down a size in my clothes. I just absolutely love this way of eating.

I’m looking forward to Easter. I’m heading to Ohio to visit my son’s family and I’ll be bringing my granddaughter back here with me for a short visit while she’s on her break. She’s almost 7 years old and I don’t get to see her very often. We’ll be coloring eggs this weekend then we’ll have an Easter egg hunt on Sunday. Such fun. I’m hoping the weather holds up and we can ride our bikes.

Have a great Easter everyone. I hope we can all stay mindful of what we’re eating and not go crazy with all the candy and cakes that will be around. 🐰🐣πŸ₯🐰

    Patty

Good morning everyone, It is Good Friday morning so I think hot cross buns will be scenting out my house. Not for me though, I’d be tempted if they were home made ones. but they are not.

Audrey, I was imagining you having a wonderful break at your caravan, sitting on a sun chair and admiring the view. And instead you were scraping away mud and pulling up weeds! You must be glad to get home to the washing! πŸ˜‰

Forget-me-nots are a weed here! A pretty one, but they can come up in their thousands. They like our native fern gullies.

Ha Patty, isn’t it a conundrum of physics that we each have the most gorgeous grandchildren! I am glad yours could be with you when she needed looking after.
I hope your fast day gets you nicely out of your ditch!

Congratulations on that lovely loss K-Lo, I think you will be looking particularly gorgeous for your wedding anniversary!

Cecile and RQP, what a great conversation about French and Spanish eating culture! I rewatched Michael Pollan’s documentary “In Defense of Food” and he talks about the French way of eating as being particularly healthy. Not just the no snacking and smaller portions, but strict traditional mealtimes that mean everyone is sitting down together and eating slowly, with good conversation. He suggests that we should take as long to eat our food, as it took to prepare it. And O yes, a glass of wine with the meal is quite a tradition too! πŸ™‚

Thanks for your comment to me RQP. I do like taking the long view about 5:2!

Audrey, just read your last post, it sounds like a busy family Easter, better than clearing mud I hope!

Eat those Christmas goodies mindfully everyone, if you are eating them! Make sure you are eating the very best!

    Posts crossed Patty!
Cheers for your wedding anniversary goal…. next year perhaps? And congratulations on coming up to 36 years!
What a lovely Easter you have planned!

K-Lo, I think you’ve inspired us! Patty… I love the wedding anniversary goal idea… for next year. I think I can swing a 46 pound loss by April 30, 2017.

My immediate goal is to lose enough weight so that I can remove my wedding band, and I can put ON my engagement ring. For some reason, my arms, hands and fingers have really taken on weight over the last 7 years and the way it stands now, I can’t remove my ring. I am shooting for the first day of Summer, Monday, June 20. That will be the first day of my ninteenth week doing 4:3. I have faith.

    Happy Easter all! <3 Rachel
