  • Hello Everyone, It is morning in Melbourne Australia, and what a lot of interesting posts I have woken up to!

I’ve had to look up what a soup maker is, check which state is MA, and go through caravan envy!

Welcome Rachel! I’m so glad you said you feel good on fast days. I was so nervous on my first fast day, and at the end of the day I felt so good that I knew 5:2 was for me. Quite often people bemoan that they aren’t losing weight on their scales, and I always think “But how do you FEEL????”

I don’t count calories or own scales (although I looked up calories to work out what I was doing on fast days) so I concentrate on how I am feeling, and how my clothes are fitting (and quite a bit of looking in the mirror 😉 ). I am just glad to be eating and feeling better, and not putting on weight. So it is a continual delight to find clothes getting comfortable, then too loose, then finding more, and changing my style as I get thinner, and basically have lots of fun.

Like you, I started concentrating on the fast days, and then realised the non fast days were all part of it too. Off shopping today and buying green beans! They are what I am hungry for! (Other things as well!)

Chronic ill health keeps me out of the work force, so I am not much use with the business lunches. Planning is everything. Your plan sounds good!

Woohoo Patty on those smaller pants! Ooh a frittata sounds good. Must buy eggs!

SteppingOut your soups sound delicious! I love soup too, especially on fast days. But don’t tempt me with another gadget!!!!

Audrey I am glad you got your Mothers Day things! 🙂

Happy International Women’s Day all you International Women! Cheers!

    Morning all,

Had a great fast day yesterday came in under 500 kcals…..

Cinque I weigh measure and log everything isn’t it funny how we all do different things on our weight loss journey but if you stick to the basics it works!

Off to the Dr’s for blood tests this morning,

    Have a great day everybody

    Audrey

    Hi Clinque

I’m another one who weighs everything and calorie counts everythingAll those years of trying to loose weight by counting calories mean it’s now an ingrained habit to enter everything in my fitness pal. When I made my soups I entered the recipes and number of portions into MFP, so it works out the calories for me, without even thinking about it. I have been entering every new meal I create in there for years now whether I,m on a diet at the time or not. 🙃

Successful fast day, yesterday, and today I was really careful with the calories, even though it’s a non-fast day, I have a new appreciation for how important it is to keep an eye on the non-fast day cals too!! Stepping Out = I do the same with FitDay… entering all my recipes on spreadsheets that I translate to fitday “custom foods” – it’s a little work up front, but oh, so easy later! Have a great rest of your week everyone! I’m off to a work site tomorrow for three days, will be interesting to see how the fasting tomorrow and Friday works out for me. More then. Rachel

    Morning all,

I had a lovely day yesterday, but it is back to a fast day today for me… had a quick peek at the scales and I am down another .5 lb so if I keep it off its 7 lbs since I re started 52 in January. ..

Going back to basics has really paid off with me, plus being able to exercise a little has also helped. …

    Have a great day everybody

    Audrey

    Hello everyone,

I don’t know why but I am eating too much and exercising as well on regular basis. But my weight is still under control. I am having veg and non-veg food daily and never doing fast and all. I don’t even know this is good or bad for me.

    Any suggestions !!

Hi everyone, it is a lovely cool evening here, I hope it is lovely wherever you are! Whatever time it is!

I think most people here weigh, measure and count, I am definitely an odd one out, but like to mention it when it comes up, so other odd bods know they aren’t alone!
    Wherever they are! 😉

Audrey, what a lovely part of the journey you are on! Congratulations!
Back to basics is good! I hope you are having a lovely fast day!

    I’m fasting tomorrow, Thursday!

Hi Fiona. Your post is a bit confusing. Are you saying that you are happy with your weight, and exercising, and eating a variety of food, but in spite of this you think you are eating too much?

Hello all. Yesterday wore me out! Even though I’ve only been retired for 6 months working a full day is rough!! I started out in the autism support classroom but at midday they moved me into a 6th grade math classroom when the teacher had to leave for a family emergency. I was on my feet and on the move all day long! But I loved it. I have a feeling I’ll need get some new, more comfy shoes before long. I did walk the dog when I got home. Two miles instead of three though. 👣 🐾 It was almost 70 degrees outside! Feels like spring is in the air. 🌷🌻🌹

Cinque, Like you, I’m an odd bod! When I began this journey I kept a food journal, measured food on my fast days, and even had a fitness pal account. That fell by the wayside very soon. But, I am wearing smaller pants and I forgot to mention that on the same day I bought smaller pants I also bought a new swim suit which was also a smaller size! 👙 hahaha, not quite that small!

Had a very good fast day on Monday even when shopping with my daughter and sister. Tomorrow is another fast day for me. Tonight is another dinner at church. I’ll see how that goes. I made a tres leches cake for it. I’m working a full day today so by supper time I think I might just try a bite of it.

    Have a good one everyone!
    Patty

    Patty

Smaller pants whoop whoop!! Always a good feeling when you go down a size.

My mum always says little pickers wear bigger knickers. … haha lol …

Well done on the work front. …sounds like you are in a good place at the moment. …

Cinque yes I too was confused by the post from fiona?

    Bye all

    Audrey

Audrey, I like the little pickers line. I’m really bad at picking at food, when I’m cooking, when the meal’s over, etc. It all adds up. My mom used to say “Too little to keep, too much to dump, that’s what makes the mama plump.” Another bad habit I used to have was finishing up what the kids left on their plates. Or eating the last bit of something just because there wasn’t enough to put in the fridge. All that adds up as well. And difficult habits to break.

    Patty

    That’s so true,

I don’t know about you but growing up we were taught always to finish your food, mum used to say there are children abroad starving, so cLear your plate …. I still can’t leave food on my plate. ….

Perhaps I should invest in smaller plates….a lifetime of habit is hard to break….

    Audrey

    Audrey
You’ve been reading my mind 😮

I have already got smaller plates and have been thinking I might use them in future. Out of curiosity I worked out my hubby’s TDEE and found out its 700 higher than mine. What made me think about the smaller plates is I suddenly realised I share out our meals equilly without giving any thought. If I put a third less on my plate it’s going to look a bit bare and I might feel deprived but if I use a smaller plate I can fill it as full as his and still eat less.

i haven’t tried it yet but I am giving it serious consideration 👀

I just found out about this plan yesterday. I am diving right in with my first fast day. So far, so good. I broke my foot in November, so in addition to the “I’m 60 and short” issues, I’ve been gaining just from lack of normal activity.

I just got the all clear from my ortho yesterday. Back in heels!!! I’m looking to lose 10 – 15 pounds over all.

    Hi K-Lo and welcome.

Hope your first day goes ok. We are a friendly group of ladies shout if you need any help or advice..

Stepping out just seen your post. I am sure I didn’t receive a notification. … small plate sounds like a good idea…lol it may trick your mind into telling your belly you are full…

    Keep in touch

    Audrey

Good morning, it is cool and wet here. Bliss. The lorikeets are raucous in the eucalypt tree. It is a welcome fast day (I ate too much yesterday) and I am sitting here with my first cup of tea.

Patty, what an exhausting day! I used to teach primary school and I remember how exhausting a normal day is, let alone new grades and switches through the day. I am so glad you enjoyed it, you sound like a great teacher! I hope you get a lovely restful day today! Or is it gym?

Such good poems and saying about pickers and plates. I remember a tired mum saying she ate what was left on the littlies plates because it was easier than walking to the compost bin. It is true. You get that tired!

I do manage to leave things on my plate = sometimes. A very difficult brain rewiring, but I could see I was treating myself as a garbage bin, so I keep trying not to. But it is much more satisfying to accurately predict how much food I need and then to eat it. An ongoing skill. Good luck with those small plates Stepping Out!

Patty, woot for your swim suit! I hope you had a lovely church dinner! Best wishes for your fast day!

Hi K-Lo, Welcome here! How is your fast day going? It might be finishing now, as mine is just starting.

    Cheers all!

Hello Cinque. Fast day is going well. I had a hard boiled egg at 8am, some pickles at 11. A small plain yogurt at 1:30. About four walnut pieces at 5 pm. I am now preparing dinner for my son and me. (Hubby went off to a meeting.) Branzino and snow pea pods. Then off to the gym.

    Thanks for asking.

    Hi Cinque,

I am sorry if I am confusing you. Let me clarify things here again, I was trying to say that I am eating too much, never fasting but I don’t have any fat. I never felt any disease at all. So I would like to ask you guys that is there any problem with me or I am fit at the moment lol….

I was went out yesterday evening with my family and we had lots of food in BBQ. We enjoyed a lot and after that we all went for a long walk and then sleep. My mother still doing fasts and all but I really don’t understand that if we are eating good food and exercise on daily basis then whats the need of fast there. Correct me please if I am wrong. I have joined this forums just for my mom.

    Thanks

    Fionakay

It doesn’t seem to me as if you need to fast, but perhaps you may have a thyroid problem have you had it tested? I only ask because I had an overactive thyroid when I was younger and could eat anything and everything and never put on an ounce….it may of course just be that you are exercising off any calories you are putting in…I would only see the need for fasts to lose weight and it appears you don’t need to do that. … hope this helps.

K-Lo glad you had a good fast day, hope you enjoyed it…

I am off for a lunch with vicky today, it’s the first time we have met without the girls for lunch since she was pregnant with Charlotte. ..7 years ago…. fasting again tomorrow so I am going to enjoy my meal….

Hope you have had a good day cinque

    Bye for now

    Audrey

    Finoakay

Agree with Audrey – you probably don’t need to fast – apart from weight the other reason really to fast is health – I do it for weight and health as I have had breast cancer and they now know that what we eat and how we eat can seriously affect our chances of getting it back/making it worse.

They also say that fasting improves health, energy and stabilises wonky blood sugars etc. If you read the books – they do cover a lot of it in there – it may help you figure out if it makes any sense for you.

I tend to feel that if you are healthy, at a weight that suits and feeling good – why change what you are doing? Best of luck.

    Manonceres

    Hi Fiona,

on the Frequently Asked Questions page (https://thefastdiet.co.uk/michael-answers-frequently-asked-questions/), Dr Mosley writes:
“The benefits in people who are not overweight are less clear because there have been fewer studies. In one experiment, a number of fit young men were asked to practice Intermittent Fasting without losing weight for a few weeks. During that time they saw improved insulin sensitivity, a marker for reduced diabetes risk
Studies of IF in animals have shown that it reduces risk of dementia. Human studies have just started.
Fasting also has a spiritual dimension and has been advocated by most of the great religions.”

Your mum may still be doing fasts because she believes that if she stops them, she may put on weight. She may feel they give a nice structure to her life, and allow her to eat what she wants on non fast days without worrying.
If she is not underweight, then she is probably making a good decision for herself.

There are many people on this forum who have reached a healthy weight, but still find they need to fast occasionally, or maybe once a week, or maybe it works best for them to keep to 5:2.

Best wishes to you and your mum!

    Hi Audrey,
That will be a delightful meal!
    Hi Manonceres!

I’m just finishing my fast day with a big bowl of miso soup packed with greens and also chicken. Delish!
It was a good fast day, well under 500cal and made me feel good.
Plus it is raining! Sweet sweet rain!

Oops my brain is in pieces! (I went out for a little bit tonight to see a fabulous indigenous woman, who lives locally, give a speech for International Women’s Day. She was great, but I did get worn out with all the little introductions and speeches leading up to it).

I was so glad to see your post K-Lo. It sounds like a great first fast.
At the end of my first fast day I felt just lovely and even had extra energy (not like today ;), but then I didn’t go out!). I knew right then that 5:2 would suit me.

PS I was able to dress up gorgeous to go to the talk. 🙂 I bought NEW BRAS for the occasion. Smaller ones!!!! Woohoo!

Whoop whoo. ..I am back in my smaller pants yeah!

    Just wanted to share this…..

    Audrey

    Hi fionakay.

Are you saying your both eating the same amount. Both eating healthy and both exercising and you don’t get why she still fasts and you don’t need too.

Your mum will need fewer calories than you simply because she is older and our calorie requirement drops as we get older.

When you say you eat too much are you comparing yourself to your mum or have you checked you TDEE for your age hight and weight.

    Shirley

Well done Audrey that’s great news 👍🏻
    💐

Congrats on the new smaller bras cinque.

I’m just praying that by the time I reach my goal weight I will still need bras. 😳

    Yay Audrey! 👖👖👖👖 Audrey Smallpants!

I really like how we all respond to Fionakay from different angles, I hope you find useful info here Fiona!

Stepping Out, I am beginning to know the feeling, but I truly think I wouldn’t mind! Here’s hoping we both keep just enough breast to put a curve in a dress. 👗👗👗👗

Never worry here about having enough breast. Would like to get BACK to a single D. A pound down after first day fast…. I’m assuming normal eating today should put a dent in that.

Normal breakfast. 3/4 c. cottage cheese (2%) with a tiny bit of Trader Joe’s (any TJ fans?) chili jam. I have a dinner and theatre date with my sister tonight. One cocktail or glass of wine. I expect to keep it fairly light today as I loved the way I felt yesterday.

Hello and welcome to the newcomers again. It seems there are new people joining this thread every day!

K-Lo, I love Trader Joe’s. Unfortunately there isn’t one near me. I can only shop at one when I go to my son’s which is an 8 hour drive so it’s not often. Congrats on being a pound less already. It won’t necessarily go back on after a regular eating day. The thing with intermittent fasting is it changes your metabolism so the weight stays off. I was surprised at how much my body changed after starting 5:2. I lost some obvious inches pretty quickly.

Congrats to Audrey on the smaller pants! 👖 It’s a great feeling isn’t it? Haven’t had to worry about a smaller bra yet but I’m sure I’ll have to sooner or later. Dennis won’t be too thrilled about that accomplishment though! 😜

Had another odd day at substituting yesterday. I began again in the autism support classroom but was moved later into a 3rd grade when that teacher had to leave for a sick child. There is another teacher in the autism support room plus some aides so they were able to spare one adult. I thoroughly enjoyed 3rd grade. The school had a fire drill just after lunch but they’d forgotten to alert the police or fire department that it was just a drill so police cars and fire trucks showed up very quickly. Ooops. Never a dull moment. Working two full days in a row was extra exhausting. Today I have a day off so I might just take a bit of a nap. 😫💤

Today is Thursday, second fast day of the week. It’s a good thing, too. Last night at our church dinner I over did it on the desserts. I’d made the tres leches cake and had to sample that. There was also a pan of pistachio tarts of some sort so I had to taste one of those. Then when I got home I had another slice of cake and, later, a glass of wine. At 10pm, way too late for sweets! Didn’t sleep too well after that but tgif-d!

Fionakay, at the top of the page on this website is a marker titled “Why Fast?” check it out to find out what the benefits are.

I saw a guy on Youtube talking negatively (and without proof) about intermittent fasting. His video is actually called “Dr. Mosley is killing people.” He had no scientific explanation of why he was so opposed to intermittent fasting, just ranted on about it. I have a feeling he has never even read Dr. Mosley’s book or any other research about intermittent fasting.

Anyhoo, I’m off to enjoy the rest of my fast day. Tomorrow is another work day for me. 5th grade this time. Have a lovely day. Patty

    Morning all!

K-Lo I hope you get to D before too long! And then even a C.

Wow Patty, they are keeping you on your toes! Enjoy your fast day! Just what you need after that feast. Best wishes for a restful day.

Chaos is happening as my daughter negotiates the move back to Melbourne. New baby is now official, due in September! Rose and Josie are coming down tomorrow for a few days, I’ll go up for a few days at the end of the week, and then bring Josie back for her first nights away from home, as they drive the car down. Then they will be here. Wish us all luck!

Hi Fasting_me, what an elaborate ad for your website! And O look, all your other posts the same!

Morning cinque, you have quite a busy few weeks ahead of you I can see, remember to take some time for yourself too.

We are off to the van tomorrow so I will not be as vocal for the next couple of weeks, however I will be catching up when I can.

Good luck ladies will post my weight when before I go tomorrow. ..

    Audrey

Thanks to all of you for your replies.

@audrey – Thanks for your reply and I would like to clarify that I have got tested and I am not suffering with thyroid.

@cinque – Thanks for the link. I will go through it may be ti will help me out.

@shirley – Yes both of us almost eating the same and I can understand that my mum need more calories then me. I am not comparing myself with my mum, I was just asking because I don’t have any idea why to keep fasting.

    Morning all

I think it’s time to check the batteries in my scales.

I fasted as usual Monday and Wednesday. Wednesday I went all out and did a water fast, today is my weigh in day and……………….😱

    I’ve lost 4 pounds this week 👀

My scales even after I tested them 6 times and tried picking them up and moving them say I’m down to 9 stone 😮🙃

    Hi Fiona

The reason to keep fasting is so you can treat yourself (eat over your TDEE sometimes) and still maintain your weight

    Shirley

    Hi Audrey

Have a good time at the van, hope the weather is kind to you.

    ☀️ 🌞 ☀️

I have finally lost an inch and a half round my waist woo hoo 💃🏻

Woohoo Shirley! You’ll be Stepping Out! 4lbs and an inch and a half! What a lovely loss!
    Enjoy!

Audrey best wishes for the most wonderful two weeks!

Fiona is your mum hassling you to keep fasting? I hope the FAQ’s help you decide what you want to do.

Night time here, I had a lovely day. Daughter and granddaughter arriving early tomorrow! I’m having some nice time to myself right now! 🙂

    Hi Fiona

Back again, I ment that’s why your mum may still need to fast. If your not overweight and not gaining weight there is no need for you to fast or change your eating habits at all.

Thanks clique, I’m still wondering if I should change the batteries because apart from the water fast day I ate the same as every other week. The water fast only saved me 300 cals extra. 😊😊

Shirley….wow well done…. big hugs and congratulations from me…..

    Audrey

Noooo! Shirley make the most of it! It might get in a bad mood next week and say you have gained 2lbs, so make the most of it being friendly!

AND you have that inch and a half to back it up!

    Hi Audrey

Just back from my dogs Hydrotheropy (posh work for swimming) got to try to get him fit enough to run on the beach. Please don’t use up all the good weather next week save some for the week after so I can enjoy it too.😊

I am already dreaming about having fish and chips on the sea front. 😋

Hi cinque it better not come back next week, we are of to the coast in the van the week after and I’m not expecting to loss anything while away. I’m just hoping that fasting will stop me gaining, mind if I do I plan to do 4.3 when I get back and get rid of any weight gain.🙄

Shirley, I will do my best, but we are hoping for good weather so we can do some gardening whilst we are there.

Because we don’t move our van and we have a big pitch we built ourselves a garden ….. which needs a lot of maintenance. I have just sewn my poppy seeds at home and have lots to take there too….ooh I can almost smell spring. …lovely. …

Off to get my oxo now….

    Audrey

I did NOT gain anything back from my non-fast day. Nice!

    Hi K-Lo well done 👍🏻

Hi Audrey a garden sounds nice, our pitch is right on the rivers edge which can flood during times of heavy rain so no garden for us, some people do make a garden using pots but if it’s dry for too long there is the risk the flowers will die.

We will be very late putting our van on its pitch this year we won’t be putting it on till around the 21st of April as we have two trips away planned and the vans due it’s service after we get back from the second trip. Our neighbors will be looking at our empty pitch wondering if we are returning this year.🤔

    Morning all
Setting off soon, been on scales 1lb down….

Good luck to everyone, will be back in touch later on in week. ..have a great weekend

    Audrey

Preparing for my second fast day tomorrow. A dozen little neck clams for dinner steamed in a little white wine, garlic, lots of fresh Italian parsley and some diced tomatoes. I have an 8 am workout – so I have a hard boiled egg at the ready.

hello all! And congrats on all the success stories. Weight and inches lost WooHoo! Today is a fast day for me and I’m sitting here with a cup of black coffee ready to begin my day.

I had a splendid girls’ weekend. All of my sisters, my daughter, granddaughters, and girlfriend were on hand to help celebrate my upcoming birthday (March 17)🎂. All hubbies were away so we had a slumber party, staying up late, talking, playing games, talking, eating, talking….Everyone is focusing on health these days it seems and the weather was excellent so we took a long walk and had great food to eat. Roasted veggies, pulled pork in the slow cooker, asparagus, and wine. There was also pineapple upside down cake, my favorite, and a banana cream pie. A meal fit for a queen. Lots of laughs. Lots of love. My youngest sister, 57yrs, just recently finished treatment for breast cancer and is just now feeling up to a gathering such as this. She had lost all of her hair due to chemo and it’s growing back. Very short and very white. It’s GORGEOUS! She’s still uncomfortable with the length and the white (she’d always dyed it in the past) but I think she was happy to hear all the positive comments about how great it looks. Sunday morning after church we had a lovely breakfast of eggs mixed with the leftover roasted veggies. More games and chatting. Best weekend ever. Hated for it to end. ❤️‍❤️‍

Shirley and Audrey, your camping plans sound like a lot of fun. I’d love to camp near the shore and walk my dog on the beach somewhere. I think I’ll have to live vicariously through you and enjoy your stories of camping.

Cinque, has your daughter got settled in? So happy to hear the official baby news. What a joy!

    Have a great Monday everyone.

    Patty

If you have weight to lose, I don’t think the “eat what you want” on non-fast days means “don’t pay attention to calories.” I think it means I have a piece of bread…half a chicken sandwich, but only half. I can have the bread though, which I can’t on Atkins or a paleo diet. Or a bit of popcorn at the movies. That is the freedom on non-fast days which is so great, a candy bar is 250 calories….I can have one which I can’t on low-carb diets where you can NEVER have one.

Hi All, I have been MIA for a while, traveling and all (for work), but so glad to be back and checking in! It was great to read all the success stories – what a hard working bunch you all are!

My biz travel was not as damaging to my progress as I thought it would be. I started FastDiet 4:3 on February 15 and weighed in at 186.4 pounds. Today is the first day of my second month and I weighed in this morning at 178.2. That is 8.2 pounds in a month. I’ll take it!!

The biz travel, which I am expecting more of in the next few months, is a challenge to be sure – I’m a corporate trainer and so there are always candies on the work tables, and lunches are provided – and there is a certain expectation about the trainers (part of the team, etc.) so I can’t afford to be stand-offish (which is how it might be seen if/when I ‘passed on’ the great food the client is providing. It’s a matter of figuring out how to finesse all this, and it may get easier once I know what the patterns and schedules will be. Perhaps I’ll end up doing 5:2 and my “2” will be the weekends!

Anyway… so great to be back here. Patty, I’m so happy for your sister that her treatments are done, yay! And I make up that she’ll come to appreciate her new hair! Helen, I totally agree, the freedom on the non-fast days that low carbing never gave me is really wonderful! Even if it is just a few crackers with a tad of cheese, that is the thing I miss most when I’ve low-carbed.

Cheers all, and I hope you all have a fabulous week! XO – Rachel

    Hi everyone,
Don’t those caravan pitches sound great: gardens, rivers edge, and sunshine a plenty I hope. I hope you have some very nice fast days down there!

K-Lo what a lovely fast day yours must have been with the clams!
I hope yours was lovely also Patty, after your gorgeous weekend. And so very precious to have your youngest sister there, laughing, with her lovely new hair.

I am having a couple of days with my lovely sisters, there are four of us who are good friends, but spread out across the state, so it is precious when we get together. They are arriving tomorrow. One thing we want to do is watch the movie ‘Inside Out’ together.

Hi Helen and Rachel, isn’t just the best to be able to enjoy those good foods every now and then.
Rachel what an impressive loss. Whatever you are doing, you must be doing it right!
I wonder what the other corporate trainers do. I’ve heard people say that the trick is to just hold a piece of food and take half an hour to nibble at it inbetween talking to everyone. That way it looks like you are joining in.

    Best wishes everyone!🐝🐝🐝🐝
