  • Hi there! My first fast is tomorrow and Friday. I am doing two consecutive days after reading The 2 Day Diet Quick and Easy. I like the idea of getting them over with for the week.

I hope to lose some weight before 2015. It would be nice to go into the new year with a loss.

Hello eaplants, that’s the spirit, you know you are on the right track when you don’t defer to the NEW YEAR. ;-)) I have never done 2 consecutive days although the hardest for me is when I come home from work on a fast day and feel lost in my kitchen and then later finding it hard to sleep on an empty stomach. However waking up the next day is usually fine (no hunger pangs etc and I believe I could do a second day of fasting easier than the first. The digestive system is still resting. But here comes the catch for me. I think the only way I could do two consecutive days is by telling myself to only do a one day fast – then wake up on the second day and decide to add another one. Knowing that you can eat the next day makes it easier to always keep starting again week after week. What has amazed me the most about the WOE is how much food/hunger is in the mind. Whatever you do – experiment with a few different ways of fasting (playing tricks on you mind) and see what keeps you motivated.

Lichtie, today (day 1), it’s almost afternoon and so far ok! What I’m doing is getting most of my calories from soy protein shakes. Also, from what I’ve read up on 5:2 by fasting researcher Mark Mattson, low carb is essential to keep your insulin low and prevent hunger. So today I’m doing the low carb soy shakes, lots of fluids and chewing gum. I’m noticing that the sugarless chewing gum really helps with hunger. I’ll repeat this tomorrow…then I’m done for the week!

Here is a link with some interesting info on 5:2 http://www.nutritionaction.com/daily/diet-and-weight-loss/are-there-benefits-of-intermittent-fasting/

Although I don’t think it’s mentioned in the article, the Harvie study he’s referencing used two consecutive days. He says the study participants’ metabolism shifted to burning fat on those two days. A bit different from what Dr. Mosley recommends, but hey, it’s still 5:2!

hi eatplants – your first fast day is now over – congratulations and well done!!!!!

I can’t wait to hear from you how the consecutive days fasting have been. Thank you for sending the link, which I read with interest. If there are more benefits this way then I would like to try this as I (think) I could easily continue once started. The main issues for me when fasting are: finding it difficult to go to sleep and more importantly feeling the cold which is why I don’t fast much in the cold winter months.

    Well done once again.

Lichtie, day 1 went far easier than I thought. I’m convinced it was the low carb, high protein shakes I had.

So today is day 2! I am so happy I am finally doing this. Been researching this for ages.

I hear you about going to bed hungry. I just can’t sleep if I’m hungry. I have my tea in the morning, then a shake for lunch and a shake in the late evening. I’ll do the same today.

Thank you for your kind words. This is such a nice forum.

Eggplant, I am glad to hear it went better than you thought, that is marvellous as this is an excellent motivator. I hope day two goes equally well.

I have found that every fast day is different. Sometimes it is easy sometimes it feels harder, but knowing that this is just how your body reacts at this point in time is great because the most important thing is to find a way that suits you and keeps you going. I am still experimenting, even though it is the third summer I am doing this. I am fasting today and it is now two o’clock in the afternoon – I have not eaten since 18.00 last night and I am not in the slightest hungry, just an empty feeling. At the moment I am thinking of not eating at all today. On Wednesday I ate supper (400cals) at 18.00 and whilst initially full (I normally do only 300cals) I felt terribly hungry two hours later, more so than before I had supper and found it hard to go to sleep.

As I said, the mind is a wondrous thing. I only fast when I am working because I am distracted all day and I just don’t take any food with me, so my brain/body knows there is nothing. As soon as I enter my home and kitchen, my mind says: “lets sit down and relax with a meal”. I feel almost lost if I don’t do the evening meal ritual.

I am very interested to hear that chewing gum helps you. I once read that the act of chewing gets your gastric fluids going and makes you hungry, which is what happens to me. Do you not get that?

No, for me it really helps with the hunger. Here’s an article I found about chewing gum that may help: http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/diet-myth-or-truth-chewing-gum-for-weight-loss

I honestly don’t know if I could do this without gum chewing. For me it’s doing two things. It either takes away the hunger or makes it very bearable. I’ll take that!

Thank you, very interesting read, I will give it a go, I agree anything that makes fasting sustainable is good.
