  • Hi, need all the help down under as been on the 5.2 diet for a month now and no difference on the scales. Have lost about and inch around the waist but would love to loose 10 kg. Have trouble on fast days of 500 calories, spread over 3 meals sometimes exceed to 600. I walk over 5 klm in morning on fast days have eggs for break, then by 1.30pm am feeling very lethargy. Any advise would be welcome, also do lawn bowling 4 times a week average over 2 hours a game.
    Thanks Mia

    Hi:

Just focus on doing your two diet days correctly. This might help: http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/really-no-weight-loss/

    Good Luck!

Hi Mia22, you should be jumping up and down and celebrating the inch off the waist. Most people who are looking to lose weight and actually looking to downsize their body. You have had a fantastic start with the inch off your waist.
The scales can easily fluctuate up and down due to a whole host of different factors. They are a quick and easy way to look for change but are not the most important change indicator.

Keep going and don’t stress too much if you find it easier to run on 600 cals for the day – it is still a lot less than you would normally be eating and you are getting results – even if not on the scales at this point in time – but even that will happen soon.

thanks ghost girl I needed that pick me up, as I keep recording every thing I am eating & drinking and the calories add up but am still eating on my non-fast days under 2000 so hopefully in time I will see results on the scales, as that is my first goal is to loose 10 kg then I really will celebrate. Mind you through the week I don’t have alcohol but on the weekend I will have a glass of wine with my dinner, and if we go out for a meal. then I thought maybe I am not mean’t to have any alcohol at all. All help is welcome, and thank you to those that have offered me some positive feedback.

Thanks for your story that really jelled with me, but I must admit you did make me laugh!!!

Hi Mia22, re: the alcohol question. It doesn’t matter if you drink alcohol, as long as you remain comfortably in the ‘normal’ range of calorie intake on your non-fastdays. If you wanted to you could have alcohol on your fastdays but I wouldn’t recommend it, as that’d add up pretty quickly and you’d have no calories left for REAL fuel 😉

BTW – DO celebrate your inch. I didn’t lose anything off my body for the first 6 weeks or so. I expect I was dropping weight like crazy (although I didn’t know for sure) but none of it showed. Be glad that your changes are showing in at least one of your measurements 😀

thanks TracyJ for that quick response, as I have reached that stage in life where both my husband & myself are sitting back enjoying retirement and he is encouraging me and even not drinking himself through the week in support. But we do like the weekends enjoying a glass together. Like you said I think on fast days I do need all the Real fuel as somedays I do feel hungry and my blood pressure I have noticed tends to drop , and I feel light headed. How long have you been on the 5.2 journey.:)

18 months now. 3st 9(ish) down, almost 3 dress sizes down, great skin, hardly any hormone imbalances any more, perfect BP, cholesterol & blood sugar. Never going back.

Never been a big drinker myself, so I save it for nights out with my friends and have cake/chocolate within my calorie allowance on non-fastdays instead 😉

A lot of people report that once they’ve been on 5:2 for a while they just lose interest in alcohol almost completely. Maybe you’ll find that to be the case, maybe not but you can have WHATEVER you want on 5:2, just not AS MUCH as you might want.

Have to say although I am a very lightweight drinker (two glasses of wine and I’m anybodies so to speak) since I have been on 5:2 wine has tasted so much better. Not that I drink any more but I do enjoy it more.
Mia have you found your TDEE and do you eat above your BMR but below your TDEE on normal days?
Mix your fast days up by occasionally 500 cals over two meals or all in one meal and don’t forget to drink plenty of tea, coffee water etc.
    🙂

Hi Lindyw thank you for your reply I am not sure of TDEE and I eat up to 2000 calories on a non-fast day I do find it hard to find meals that are split with 250 cal’s I keep looking on the net for meals. I do try to have my fast days when I am at home and not going out so I have more control. How long have you been on the 5.2 diet?

Tracyj you have had fantastic results such an accomplishment and gives me great hope.:)

Hi Mia22, re: “I am not sure of TDEE and I eat up to 2000 calories on a non-fast day”

That might well be your problem right there! If you haven’t already done so, go to the ‘how’ tab above and work out your BMR and TDEE. You don’t have to religiously calorie count or anything but you should be eating somewhere between your BMR (definitely more than that number) and your TDEE (definitely less than that number if you want to lose weight) calories on non-fastdays.

When people quote 2000 calories or say ‘eat normally on non-fastdays’ they are referring to ‘Ms Average’, which few of us are and ‘normal’ is a very relative term. You need to know what YOUR PERSONAL ‘normal’ range of calories should be (TDEE) and aim for that (or slightly less) on non-fastdays in order to actually lose weight.

You STILL might find that the scales don’t move quickly, or even at all to start with. You might be one of those who notice the inch loss before the weight loss, or you might not notice any change (other than health benefits) for ages and then it suddenly just kicks off when you least expect it. It’s different for everyone.

Tracy is right Mia – you need to find your calorie range to aim – sorry I didn’t put the link in my post 🙁
I have been doing 5:2 since last May – I started a thread called May to December to record my progress and I had set myself a target for December which I am pleased to say I met 🙂
I am just about at two and a half stone loss and although I am happy with this for the rest of my life I am continuing with 5:2 to shift another 8lbs to give me some leeway when I am on 6:1.
Keep going, keep busy on your fast days – it is worth it!
