  • Hi All.

I am 30 and 5ft2 I have 26 kilos(just over 4 stone) to lose but I’d be pleased if I can get 19 down in the meantime. Put the weight on quickly when moving to the UK (cheap Ben and Jerry’s and Pringles. doh!) and haven’t managed to shift it in 4 odd years. Tried (am trying) herbalife and lost 5kg’s but put it all back on. I really want to lose the weight and keep it off.

Today is my first day, any tips or helpful hints.

    How exciting!

Hi d3lishxrose! Welcome to the 5:2 WOL and the forums 🙂 people are incredibly supportive on the site and love to hear from others so check in whenever you need some added motivation or when (not IF!)those lbs start to drop off!

The biggest tip I can give you is to save all your calories for your evening meal – if you can manage it. Its not for everyone, but I find a fast day so much easier if I don’t eat until the evening. It sounds awful if you have never done it but I found that if I ate anything in the morning or afternoon, I just could not stop thinking of food all day. When I don’t eat during the day, I can often forget about it for hours at a time. And the added water I am drinking to sustain me throughout the day has improved my general wellbeing so much.

Other than that, I would recommend low-calorie ready meals for fast days. I spend a lot of time commuting so by the time I get home from work I am ravenous. If I had to start cooking and counting and weighing ingredients I would just reach for the nearest bacon sandwich! Ready meals are hot and tasty and the calories are calculated for me. Always helps to keep me on track!

Best of luck to you and keep us posted xx

Hiya, I agree with NatashaD’s sage advice. Leave it as long as you can before you eat and you’ll realise much quicker that ‘hunger’ comes in waves (they pass) and you CAN keep going if you will it.

As Natasha suggested, a nice ready meal would be a great motivator if it’s something you’ll look forward to. I like to give myself a carrot to look forward to on my fastdays. Mine is bran flakes (which may seem bizarre but I never get to have breakfast anymore, as I fast for at least 16 hours every day) – I really really look forward to them with a nice cup of tea all day.

Once you’re settled into your routine, start introducing some exercise into your fastdays (towards the end of the actual fasting period and before you eat anything), it will help you to burn fat quicker. You don’t have to go crazy and join the gym or anything, walking or whatever exercise you would normally do is fine.

hi there and welcome to the forums!!

nothing for me to add to the already sound advice given above 🙂 I love my ready low cals meals too lol, I don’t use them every fast day but on a working day they are god’send 🙂

good luck on your journey and well done 🙂

    Hi Angie, Tracy and Natasha,
Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it. Did so well yesterday and then woke up at 2, Ravenous and mentally weak, munched 2 cookies and yoghurt and woke up feeling so so so disappointed. Back on the wagon tomorrow (for real this time).

I’ll definitely try and not eat anything all day and save the calories for the evening meal… maybe that’s the ticket. I felt fine last night but when I woke up hungry I lost all resolve…

So this really really works? I’ll stick to it then! Yes!

Don’t worry too much about a slip. There is always another fast day! It really does get easier over time.
I have been on it for eight weeks now and I lost 6 kg.
    Best of luck
    Stef.

6 kg! Wow, that is great Stef! I’ll definitely keep at it! Today is my first proper fast day (not cracking today!!!). I can do it!!!

So first official fast day completed, on the other side of the fast day it really wasn’t so bad. Stayed busy at work, drank loads of green tea and lemon and even more water. Lets hope today goes just as well and that I behave this weekend. :-/

You’ve had some good advise, I also find it best to save the majority of cals until the evening.
I started the 5:2 this time last year and dropped 15kg in 5 months before falling off the wagon. I would like to lose a similar amount of weight to yourself and I am pleased to say that although I lapsed I gained less than half of my loss so I must have retained some good eating habits!
One thing I have found best is to set myself small targets rather than thinking about losing 26kg, it is a daunting prospect! In the beginning my target might have been to lose 4kg but when the weight loss slowed after 3-4 months I set lower targets. I used to reward myself with a non food item every time I reached a target, it was always something I really wanted but wouldn’t allow myself to have until I had lost the weight, it doesn’t have to be something expensive or even have a monetary value ( I once rewarded myself with a whole day to myself just reading in the sunshine we had last summer…….it was bliss and I got a great tan!)
Good luck with your weight loss!

Hi Leahashleigh, Thanks for your reply! Just made it through my first week of “skinny days”. Feeling great and anxious to weigh in next week. 15kg is really good!…. more than half way for you! News like this motivates me wonderfully. I like the idea of rewarding myself with a non food treat. I must do my best not to stuff my face today and for the rest of the weekend though. Good luck and lets get there this year!

So, 3 weeks in, 2 kilos down in the first two, nothing this week though, in fact, it appears as if I’ve gained 300g. a little disappointed to be honest. I won’t give up though, keep on keeping on!

Why might I have gained 300g though? I did eat a bit of chocolate on Saturday, could this be it?

Don’t stress about minor gains. They happen. Fluid retention, constipation, or just inexplicable. 🙂 More than likely NOT the chocolate.

I have graphed my weight loss since mid October last year and it is not a nice steady downward line – it looks more like a roller coaster ride – but I keep on getting to a lower point and the peaks are never that big.

People like to call this a marathon, not a sprint – and they are right. As much as we would all like to be able to click our fingers and be at goal weight it ain’t gonna happen like that and it is healthier for us to lose the weight slowly.

Well done on your loss so far – don’t give up!

I know it’s easy to get disheartened if you don’t lose as much as you hoped for or put some on but, as ghostgirl says, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. You should be able to eat chocolate on your non-fast days too. you should be able to eat what you want on those days – just not as much as you want. Check you are not going over (or under) your BMR/TDEE allowance. Have a look in the “how” section and read about BMR and TDEE and use the calculator.

    Good Luck, Linda

Thanks Linds and ghostgirl, I might very well be going over my TDEE, I will keep going though, see how Thursday weigh in goes, this will be week 4 and I definitely expect a decent drop. How much did you both lose in your first month?

I lost 8lb in the first month but it has slowed to around 1lb a week (or less now). I’ve finally lost the 5lb I put on over Christmas so am now hoping to get more off. I’ve now taken measurements as I hadn’t bothered before. The only one I knew was my waist and I have lost 2inches there so I am well pleased.

I am also trying to be more controlled on Tuesdays and Thursdays because I think I might need to cut down on those days so that I can indulge more at the weekend. It’s only because I go to the pub on Fridays and Saturdays and have to factor in those calories. I don’t want to be restricting my food on those days or I’ll end up on my back (beer with no food inside me doesn’t go) so have to do it some other way!

    Good luck for Thursday

Hi Linds, well that all sounds quite reasonable, I threw in an extra fast day last week because I was so displeased with my progress but I am starting to see that it is a marathon and not a sprint… I’m just not disciplined at all on weekends so I worry that this will be my downfall in the end. I am chuffed that fast days aren’t as impossible as I thought they would be, I guess as long as I can see that I’m losing, I’m happy! By the sound of things it should work if I work it properly!

So, 77.50 this week, so 6.50 kgs down so far… now 19.50 to go. I’ve found that I feel healthier and have managed one meal a day on fast days just fine, until last week where I split my meals to two a day. I’m back on just one meal a day which I think works much better. My weight loss works out to about 500g a week, I think this is good, albeit slow progress. I honestly haven’t been very active, I run for 20-30 mins twice a week some weeks and not on other weeks which isn’t ideal. I do and have always struggled to get my butt off of the sofa. I should work on that…. really really should. Do you think I’d make better progress if I managed my runs every week?

hi D3lishxrose and well done on your progress so far!!

personally I don’t think running any more will make any difference to your weight loss, as exercise has very if any impact on actual lbs losses!

if anything you main gain, as you probably know, muscle weight which is exactly what I try to avoid grrrr, I loose in inches but very hardly in lbs at mo…

I think you are doing great as it is, so keep going!! 🙂

Hi D3lishxrose, you are doing really well – it’s a very good amount for the time you have been doing it.

I have managed to lose the weight I put on over Christmas and another 3lb (1.4k). In total since I started I have lost 7.7k but that is since October. People are starting to notice a bit more now and I can see a change in my body shape. I have a ab machine, thigh master and stepper at home that I have been using for ages before I started this and are my main form of excercise (dodgy knees permitting). I do try to do things like walk up the stairs when I am at work too.

As Angie says, you are going great! Linda

Thanks everyone! I’m afraid a month in and I have slipped bit (if slipping means nose diving into a packet of minstrels at every opportunity). I went down to 77.50kg, up to about 80.00kg and now I’m 78.80kg – I am fasting today, kicked sugar completely so really hopeful that tomorrow will have me back to 77.50 so that I can go back to winning! I haven’t really seen the massive drops that I hear others speaking about but I figure losing slowly is better although a massive drop would be just amazing!

Thanks for the encouragement! Good luck all!
