  • My husband has read conflicting reports on whether any carbs are allowed on the fasting day. If anyone knows the answer to this can you please let me know. We have considered eating things like cous cous as an alternative to say rice or potatoes but they too contain carbs as well.

Helen – I have used the 5:2 diet consistently since last August and have lost 5-1/2 stones. Personally I go low-carb on the fast days (not fanatically, but no cereal, rice, pasta, sugar, bread etc). I do the same thing each fast day: berries and plain yoghurt for breakfast, no lunch and for dinner there is a large portion of non-starchy vegetables with either a piece of chicken or a piece of salmon.

I did try the 5:2 shortly after the Horizon documentary was broadcast. I had some success but my progress fizzled out and I gave up. I now realise this was because I was eating things like jacket potato on the fast days – low calorie but high glycemic and high carb. Eventually I gave the 5:2 another try and achieved success by adopting low carb fasting days.

I believe that intermittent fasting (in its various guises) works by creating windows during which time insulin falls off and allows the fat burning hormones to do their work. Have a look at this video if you are interested – I think it explains things quite well:

Remember that this plan is not prescriptive on what you should eat. Many find that eating carbs on fast days causes more hunger and prefer to concentrate on the protein and veggies.

You need to find what works for you.

Hi Helen, I’ve been fasting for five and a half weeks and have lost 12lbs:-) On fast days I always have carbs, weetabix with skimmed milk to start the day. I drink lots of water throughout the day and have a light evening meal around 7.30pm of lots of steamed veg or mixed salad with a chicken breast, salmon steak or veg burger/fillet. I love my Pepsi Max so I have a can with dinner. On weekends (Fri,sat) I have a large glass of wine with my evening meal and pretty much eat what I fancy.
This seems to work for me, I don’t find I’m hungry on fast days and really enjoy my food the other 5 days. Like myself I think you just need to find out what works for you.
