  • Hi fastingbelle.
    Welcome to the forum.
I haven’t had any problem with the sleeping side of fasting although some mornings after fast day I wake up with a headache but I think that’s not having drunk enough water on those days. I have an iPod with audiobooks on it and I find that quite relaxing I set the timer for 30 minutes and most nights I’m asleep before the iPod turns itself off. So perhaps something like that might help. The same thing with an iPad with music/ audiobooks anything really that you like.
I agree there’s nothing worse than not being able to sleep. Although some nights I’m up a few times to go to the toilet after so much water during the day but usually I go straight back to sleep. I find if I go to bed around 10-10.30 pm I can go through till about 4.30 am without waking up. What time do you go to bed?
They reckon that as you get older you don’t need as much sleep!!! Don’t know if that’s true or not.
I’m 63 and my husband is 67 but he’s in bed long before me. He can sleep really well . ( I’m jealous really)

Anyway good luck and hope you get some ZZZZZZs soon.

    Hi Everybody

Welcome to the group fastingbelle I only joined last week great group with all the same aims
And is so much better when you can contact people having similar ups and down as yourself

Deerhunter do not worry about those new scales you clothes are feeling loose so you
Must be doing something right. Great treat fish &chips well deserved.

Had a good weekend went to the spa with my daughters a Mother’s Day treat

Next fast day Wednesday finding FD not too bad hoping it will get better with time.

Hope everyone has a good week onwards and upwards xxx

    Hi fastingbelle

Meant to say I use sleep aid tablets (herbal) from Asda and they do the trick but I only use now
and again. Hope this will help
    X

thanks, Filly girl. I will give them a whirl!

    Hi everyone,

Well, the first fast day is over for me. My stomach was rumbling a bit by the end of the day and I came close to licking my 10 month old Granddaughter’s dinner bowl out after she had finished eating her evening meal but other than that, it wasn’t too bad. I survived the day!

I had to move one of the two fast days from a Thursday to a Friday to accommodate my wife’s weekly brunch club at work. I was happy do it because I don’t think I could do the fasting without her also being on the diet. In any event, she wouldn’t be able to cope with my drooling while she ate a proper meal on my fast days. I think that swung it for me.

Deerhunter: I had problems with my digital scales giving inaccurate readings. They had lost one of the rubber feet so a bit of cardboard did the trick to level them up. Mind you, if yours are brand new and you can’t calibrate them, I would get them replaced.

Fastingbelle: I don’t think there is anything worse than not being able to get a good night’s sleep. Yes, It wears you down after a while. It may be that your body just needs a bit of time to adjust to the diet. Stick at it and see how it goes. I did read somewhere that a warm bath about an hour before you go to bed sometimes helps. Apparently, the body cooling after a warm bath mimics the slight drop in temperature that the body goes through as you nod off to sleep. I haven’t tried it myself but it may be worth a go.

    Good luck everyone.

    Peter

    Hi Peter
Glad your doing ok the rumbling tummy is horrid, I did have a cupasoup on a fast day did the trick
If your counting cals only 55 one of the other girls recommend a spicy carrot soup which is really
Nice there is a link on one the girls emails. Keep the good work up my third fast day will be tomorrow
    Wish me luck.

    Pat

    Pat,
Thanks for the tip. I may well try it. I’m using the recipes that are in the ‘Fast Diet’ book and I’ve noticed that the total daily calories in the menus are a bit less than recommended so it gives me a bit of leeway.

    Good luck tomorrow,

    Peter

    Hi All,

I’m getting off to a late start I see as you’ve all been posting way before me!

Welcome Fastingbelle, you’ll be at home on this forum, all of us about the same age and with similar issues.

Himself has lost nearly 3 kilo since we started and he dropped out of the program. Can you believe that!!! I have lost less than that since 27 April despite being scrupulous. Life just ain’t fair! Admittedly, I did change scales and like you Deerhunter, gained a couple of unwanted pounds on the changeover but at the end of the day nothing much else happened. HOWEVER……..I have to say I do feel terrific, on fasting and post fasting days so maybe the health benefits are kicking in and the weight loss will happen later. I will be patient and determined and conscientious every day and look for my dividends later.

I has fish and chips today! More fish than chips but it was originally a fast day which I had to swop at the last minute because of granddaughter minding. The weather was typical for British school hols and our plans had to change. Thursday will be much the same but I am far more controlled than I was so feel good about myself. Almost virtuous!

Deerhunter, I’ve succumbed and bought a cheapish but well recommended treadmill. Thought the weight loss would accelerate with some exercise and you know this has been an issue with me. Hope to get it by the end if the week and then I’ll be up and walking if not running!!

Wonder how Peter got on for his first fast. If your listening Peter, get in touch and share! Oops, just seen a posting from you so see you’re still on board. Nice.

Fastingbelle, add to the advice a late snack reserved from your daily cals. I found this worked for me. Just something 25-50 calories seems to get me off to sleep and other that the usual trips to the bathroom I’ve been able to sleep since the first few fast days.

Deerhunter, how are those bruises? Bet you’re technicoloured!

Filly girl, how was the spa? I spent time with my daughter at the weekend and her company was therapeutic. As we were decorating and she’s the messiest painter I can’t say it was fun. Paint everywhere, including the dogs!

Oh I can’t wait to get into my numerous sized clothes that have been stored for a lot of years now. They are in boxes according to size so I’m on my way to 18 and then downwards and onwards.

I love posting with you girls and Peter. You all make me feel so good about this.

    Thank you. Gilgil

    Hi Gilgil
Glad you has a good weekend. Spa was great had the facial felt quite relax, after also a
glass of champagne( did not drink it all just a couple of sips), a fresh fruit kebab and
homemade chocolates so glad it wasn’t a fast day. Sorry to hear hubby has opted out
but didn’t he do well. Gilgil carry on the good work you still have all of us and we all
need your encouragement your our mentor. You will soon be wearing those clothes
    Of yours.

Good luck on the treadmill when it arrives, my excercise is taking Tilly the schnauzer for
A 40mins/ 1 hr walk in the woods everyday I am not a gym person have tried but find
    it so boring.

My third fast day tomorrow can you believe it I am looking forward to it lost 2 lbs first week.
I also cooked the curried carrot soup really very nice.

    Have a good night Patx

Thanks for the welcomes Peter and Gilgil – yes, I have reserved a little snack for later – usually do but sadly doesn’t always work. Going to try camomile tea tonight! Let’s see if it works …
Peter I have been doing IF since September, so I don’t think my little (and they are little) problem is about early days.
Not willing to go for 3 days – am near my goal weight after umming and arring about what that should be for a couple of months. It’s a case of tum versus face (yes, I am vain!) but decided that another 7 lbs would give me manoevering room.
Next fast probably Friday – I like doing Friday because then I am not tempted to open the wine bottle too early for the weekend!
Thanks to you all for making me feel at home

    Hi all
Peter: You-sound like you are doing well and you might be right about the scales.Keep up the good work. The rumbling tum is a bit disconcerting in the beginning but, you get used to it and the benefits are worth the ‘ noise’. I feel really good the next day especially knowing that you’re not totally restricted. Good luck.

Gilgil: Yes the bruises are coming out nicely thank you. I look like I’ve been in the wars. Good news about your soon to be best friend ‘the treadmill’. Just take it slow and easy don’t go crazy the first few weeks. If I’ve had a long break from the ‘tready’ it takes me about a week to get back into it. MM has started back on the treadmill after a long break and he’s slowly getting his speed up. This is a fella that really didn’t like doing any exercise at all. Now he’s seeing the benefits it’s given him more encouragement to keep going.
Did you feel guilty eating the fish and chips? I did for about 2 seconds!!!
Let us know how you how you go with the ‘new friend’.
    Good luck

    Fastingbelle:
It must be great to be near your goal. I don’t think I’ll get to that weight but, wouldn’t mind getting to under 70 kgs.
Time will tell, meanwhile other benefits are kicking in so that’s got to be good for the soul. Enjoy your wine when you do open that bottle!!!! I quite like a little wine myself and my wine free days are the fast days so that works well for me.
    Anyway happy fasting.

    Fillygirl :
Those chocolates sounded good . They are my little weakness at times but, I’m really good on fast days.
    Have a good week.

Hi! I noticed this thread right away after registering.

I am 60 and will be starting my fasting Monday morning, so I would like to join you.

My goal is to make this a lifestyle and not just another diet. I plan on buying Mimi Spencer’s new book on 5:2, which will be available here in the States next month. I already have several books on the topic, so I’m good to go.

    Hi, Gonecath

Welcome. Good luck with your goals. It’s good to hear from people living in different parts of the world. I’m from the UK.

Day one after the fast day found me eating just over 100 calories more than my recommended daily intake. Like the book mentions, I found that I didn’t want to gorge myself with food and wasn’t looking for snacks throughout the day. I was a bit surprised at this as I had also done a workout session at the gym. I must admit that when I do something I tend to throw myself wholeheartedly into it and as the book provides the calorie count for all sorts of foodstuffs I thought, why not use it.

I only have one concern and that is regarding a blood donation interval research programme I volunteered for in here the UK (there is some concern about possible future blood stocks as the proportion of people in the community gets older). I’ve been randomly allocated an eight week blood donation cycle (normally it’s twelve weeks for men in the UK). I’ll be interested to discover whether or not my body can replace the lost iron whilst on this diet within the eight weeks. Mind you, I suppose this in itself will all help towards the research.

I’ve got no facts and figures about how I’m doing at the moment, my next weigh in is next Sunday.

    Have a good day, everyone.

    Peter

    Hi Everybody

Welcome Gonecath to the group everyone is really supportive and some really interesting
posts. The fast diet cookbook by Mimi Spencer is really good and easy great recipes.
This is my second week and third fast day today like your self I have been on every
diet you could think of, so making 5.2 a way of life. Really good to hear from you
as Peter said nice to have people from other countries makes the world so much
smaller. Good luck to you Gonecath for D Day on Monday lets us know how you
    get on.

Hope everyone as a good day today filly girl x

    Me again fillygirl

Can any tell why my posts look like they do using ipad?

    Hi Gonecath.
Welcome to the ‘family’. It’s great that people from around the world can chat online. I’m 63 and live in Australia just north of Sydney. The 5.2 diet is getting to be quite popular here and I’ve told a lot of people about it. There is a lot of info available and plenty of recipes both in the 5.2.books and other recipe sites. As you say it’s not just a diet but a way of eating . I read on an earlier post that someone said if you’re looking for quick weight loss then this is not for you.but instead it’s a slow and steady diet that gets other benefits as well.
Reduced blood pressure and cholesterol are just 2 to name a few that might change .Plus you’ll feel better in yourself.
It’s a bit hard in the beginning and some days are better than others. My hubby still struggles around.mid afternoon. Just drink plenty of water that’ll fill you up. I’m still in my early days compared to others on the forum( 19 weeks).
So good luck on your first day .
Let us know how you go.
    Cheers

    Hi Filly girl
I think it’s just the way iPad formats things. I use an iPad and love it. Don’t know how I survived without it. Have you been using the iPad long?

    Hi everybody

Just found a really good website for low cal meals do not know how to do a link!!!!!
but is called skinnytaste.com have a look tellme what you think

    Fillygirl x

    Hi Deerhunter

Have an iPad mini which Brian bought me for my birthday 2 years ago, I wouldn’t be without
It. Love shopping on it and have now got hooked on Candy Crush I am just like a kid.

Over here we have a shop call Next and love to shop there for tops jeans etc and on occasions
Do my weekly grocery shop and delivered to the door how lazy is that!

Today weather here in Cheshire is foul raining quite hard where’s our summer is it ever going to
arrive, really envious when you said weather down under was 24c Brian and I have been
to Australia twice and absolutely loved it I preferred OZ to NZ. As I said before fast day today
So far so good what are you up to day

How great is to get more 5.2 ‘s on the website the more the merrier I say

Have a good day fillygirl ( Pat or Tricia ) x

    Hi Filly girl
Yes. Shopping is great online via the iPad. I never was very interested in laptops or anything but just love this little machine. Got hooked as soon as I turned it on. Going online is so easy
You live in a nice part of the UK but, unfortunately the British weather doesn’t have a good reputation does it?
I’m an ex pat. Moved to Australia when I was 22 ( a long time ago) . Only came out for 2 years!!!! Funny how things turn out in your life.

Tomorrow is our fast day 2 of the week. My husband will be working from home and I’m off to do a bit of shopping . I try and keep busy. Reading the posts is a good way to keep occupied in between other jobs.
Do you keep a diary of your fast day cals, meals etc? It’s good when you tally up the cals and it comes under 500/600 for the day. Mind you there are a few days when we’re over but not by many.

Hope your fast day goes well.
    Cheers for now

    Hi Deerhunter

Originally from London, then Somerset with Brian’s work then came to Cheshire when Brian was made a Director and moved yet again to the North 18 years ago. Our plans were to moved to Hampshire
but when the girls finished University one went to Liverpool and the other Leeds they decided to
stay up North so we stayed to. As you say funny how life works out..

I do count cals because it keeps me in check as I said fast day today it’s lunchtime here and so
I didn’t have breakfast but have just had half a cup of the curried carrot soup that was recommended
    on site lovely.

Have a look at the web site skinnytaste.com. Some really good low cal recipes have just made
Lighter Aubergine (Eggplant) Parmesan but without the ricotta ( don’t like. It) cals 265 with ricotta.
Did not make my own tomato sauce used passsata from supermarket still low cal. I am
    Looking forward to supper now.

Good luck tomorrow wish I could shop with you love shopping

    Filly girl x

    Hi fastingbelle

How is the sleeping going better I hope nothing is worse than not being able to sleep.
Let me know how you are doing.
    Fillygirl x

    Hey everyone,

Glad to see us growing in number while reducing in weight! Welcome, Gone cath. You are absolutely right, this is the way and how lovely to be going international!

My new best friend ( quote per Deerhunter!) the treadmill, arrived today. Had a whole 2 minutes on it before himself decided to adjust the belt and it’s been out of action since! Need I say I turned to food for consolation and today was a fast day. Am I weak willed or what? He says he’ll buy my another, although I laid out for this one, where does he get his reasoning? Not a happy home tonight! I’m making his supper as planned as I was fasting so there’s nothing for me and I need to eat. Oh well, a jacket potato can’t do too much harm. Tomorrow is a another day except I’m day tripping to France with himself and our 7 yr old granddaughter. I will be good. I will be good. I will be good!

Farewell fellow 5:2’ers it’s so lovely to be in touch with all of you.. JFI, I live in Kent, about 20 motorway minutes from Dover. Come from Wales though and moved down here to receive that little granddaughter I mentioned, just 8 years ago. Haven’t been to Australia alas but did live in Ohio where my daughter was born many years ago!

All the very best everyone, I may be the naughty one just now but you encourage me so much that I know I’ll be back on the wagon ASAP.

    Hi Gilgil
Sorry to hear about your treadmill you were so looking forward to it arriving, make him indoors
Buy you a super expensive one!!! My fast day today but felt really sick by time supper
was due what’s that all about? And although not eaten all day feel fat!!

Your not the naughty one do not be so hard on yourself
Stress always makes you eat and you had good reason to do so.

    Have good night x
    Filly girl

    Hi Gilgil
Sorry to hear about ‘your best friend’ can you send it back for a refund?????
Things like that make you a bit stressy but don’t despair you’ll come good again I sure.
Lucky you being able to pop over to France like that. Next time I’m in the UK I think I’ll do that on the train although I’m not real kreen on that Chunnel .
Don’t spend too much or eat too much of that French cuisine !!!!!
Have a good day and . As the Gone with the wind famous line says ‘Tomorrow is another day’
    Cheers
    Have a good day.

    Hi Filly girl
Hope you are feeling OK after your fast yesterday. The nausea might be because you went so long without
eating anything at all. Some of the 5.2rs day say they need 3 small meals a day rather than 1 big one or 2,which is what I do. You just need to change the pattern to suit you as we are all different.
I have porridge for breaky with a few Blueberries then a coffee around lunch time, then our dinner around 6.30 pm. If I’ve got the vapours in the afternoon I’ll have a mug of OXO? That generally fixes me up. A nice beefy taste, or you could have a cup of lo cal soup. Just to ward off that draggy feeling.
I’m sure you’ll find what suits you after a bit of experimentation .
Well I’m off to those shops to boost the economy.
    Have a good day.

    Good morning everyone,
I’m sorry to read about ‘side effects’ some are suffering as a result of the diet but I think Deerhunter is right about making some personal adjustments. The main thing is to keep everything under control. You can do it.

I’m a great believer in exercise as a therapeutic tool and indeed if I am unable to exercise through illness or injury, I am like a caged animal in a zoo; pacing around wanting to get out. I do get ‘high’ after exercise and my GP informs me that this is caused by the effects of the endorphins my body produces during exercise. I guess I’m a fitness junkie. In any event,I get a nice feeling of well-being. For me a good diet AND exercise are inextricably linked. I’m hoping that the ‘highs’ I get from exercise will counterbalance the ‘lows’ of fast days.

Swimming is a great form of exercise with no pressure on your joints. There is a programme called Swimfit run by the British Swimming Association in association with British Gas. It is quite motivational in that you get provided with different types of fitness programmes depending on what type of challenge you fancy doing. If you haven’t exercised for a while though, It’s best to get checked out by the Doc. before starting. The link to swimfit is here: http://bit.ly/1mtH4mB

I am calorie counting and found that yesterday, I only ate 71% of my recommended daily calorie intake on a non fast day. Strangely, I didn’t feel hungry but it is something I need to keep an eye on. I don’t know why it is but since my first fast day, I don’t feel the need to snack at night. I could quite easily eat almost a whole packet of digestive biscuits throughout the evening (or alternatively 3 chunky Kit Kats) but all this week, since fasting on Monday, no cravings at all. I think that the amount of exercise I do possibly prevented me from getting seriously overweight.

My main reason for doing this diet is to get rid of body fat. I’m happy with my weight so the balance I’m trying to get right is lose some body fat and add muscle. I don’t want to be a body builder, I’m too old anyway, just enough to burn more calories. That’s my goal.

    Peter

    Dear Deerhunter,

If you actually visit the Uk then you have to visit us and we can compare svelte shapes and also take you to France by car on the ferry!! Think about it.

You seem to be going at it steady and sure and as always, full of good advice. Yes, tomorrow is another day and I’m sipping a low calorie tomato juice for brekkers before throwing on clothes to go to the ferry. Abigail is v. excited and I think I am too. Being busy will allow me to not think of me or hunger or anything except having a nice time and I did say I would be good, so I will.

The scales moved downwards today so it’s obvious that I needed to eat on a fast day to get things going!!! Seriously, how on earth do I explain that one away?

Anyway, all good wishes to you both for the end of your week, successful fasting and weight loss!

    Gilgil

    Dear Peter,

You certainly seem to have taken to this like a duck to water and I know you are going to be an inspiration to us with your successes. I am envious of your ability at exercise which is so key to the removal of fat and redistribution of our bodies and really hope your changing of fat to muscle works well. I believe it can for you as you are fit, not overweight and have such focus.

I wish you well on your quest nd can’t wait to hear the results.

    Regards, Gilgil.

    Dear Filly girl,

I am concerned about the nausea and can only echo what the others have said. I really would consider taking the whole amount and dividing it up over non sleeping hours, on paper, as a plan of what you will consume and when. Half a cup of low cal soup sounds too little. I thought it was 85 for a bowl and think you may be underestimating what you are taking on board.

Stay well, fast well and keep posting.

    Regards Gilgil.

    Dear Gilgil,

You are very generous with your responses and give some wise advice. I was introduced to exercise late in life and I hope I can persuade others to have a dabble.

My inspiration is the guy in a wheelchair at my local gym who regularly works out there. Just the effort he puts in to get onto each piece of equipment is truly remarkable. I think the London Paralympics opened everyone’s eyes to what we can be done. Compared with these people, I’m a lightweight, but thanks anyway.

    Peter

    Hi Gilgil

I think I will reconsider my fast days and perhaps use the cal through the day, saying
That thrilled today lost 1 1/2lbs so altogether 3 1/2 lbs in two weeks. Onwards and
DOWN hurray. Did you have a good time in France with your family what did you
    do?

    Peter

I agree with you about exercise did lots of different exercise when I was younger
but unfortunately have something call Polyarteritis Nodsoa which stops me doing
to much exercise alas. I do not let it get me down mind over matter I say live
for today! Hoping that 5.2 will help me.

    Non fasting day today YES!

    Filly girl x

    Hi Peter
I agree with you that exercise on a regular bases makes you feel good. I’m not a gym person but, I do have a treadmill at home and both my husband and I give it a good work out. He goes a lot faster than I do but, I’m quite happy to do my little bit. I try and do some every day but, if not at least 5 times a week. I used to exercise at various times of the day but, I’ve now found that doing it before breakfast is better for me. It gives you a boost for the day.

You’re lucky that you don’t have a weight problem but I’m sure you’ll get other benefits. I haven’t lost a lot of weight but my shape is changing and clothes fit better so I’m happy with that.
The downside to not losing enough weight is that your BMI doesn’t change much and according to the experts I’ll still be overweight or obese!!!!!

Never mind keep on keeping on.
    Bye for now

    Hi all
Well I bought another set of mechanical scales today to compare to the digital ones and they are about 1 kg difference. I think my old ones that died last week were probably telling me lies as I thought I’d broken the 80kg barrier but, alas no. Still I’ll keep working on the process. Fast day today and my tummy rumbles are telling me it’s chow time and MM keeps looking at the pantry with longing !!!!

    Gilgil
Hope you enjoyed your trip to France. You never know I might hold you to that trip on the ferry!!!
    Have a good day.

    Fill girl
Congrats on your weight loss this week. It gives you encouragement to stick with it. I’m sure once you have found out what suits you the nausea will go. I had my mug of OXO this afternoon and it’s a life saver.
    So good luck to you.

Hello all – this group sounds really brilliant so I would like to give it a go.
Thanks for the tip – Peter I think – that the ebook by Michael Moseley and Mimi Spencer has been discounted. I have already downloaded it and am now plucking up the courage to start- I might go out and buy some Oxo first!
My aim is to lose about ten kilos. I don’t have a treadmill, but already have a Wii so bought the Wii Fit and find it really good, especially for aerobic and balance exercises. It keeps track of your progress and has a body test too, that assesses your balance and gives you your weight. It also comes up with comments and questions that I find really annoying, but you can easily get used to ignoring them!
I have a friend who uses meal replacements to lose weight – has anyone tried them on fast days? Or is that a really bad idea – what do you think?

    Hi Eleri39
    Welcome to our little group.
I think some people on the other forum topics have said that they use the weight loss meals or the drinks.
Haven’t tried it myself but, if the calorie count is right then I guess it would be a good idea depending on the cost. At least you wouldn’t have to worry about cooking if you didn’t feel like it sometimes. Even if you did it every so often.
The Wi exercise sounds great. Have thought about getting it myself.
Anyway good luck with your first day. Let us know how you go.

    Hi Eleri39
Welcome to the group Gilgil is the founder and what a brillent job she has done.
Seems to be new 5.2s everyday which is great we are all aiming for the same
    end.
I am not to sure about meal replacement meals but if you get the Fast Diet Recipe
Book there a some really good easy meals. Good luck on the excercises on
    the Wii
Let me know how you get on and there is plenty of support here

    Filly girl

    Bonjour Everyone,

Back from Calais just now with a tired child and a grumpy old man. Turned out to be a national bank holiday so everything except eateries were closed. Abigail thinks Calais in very plain which means very uninteresting. Can’t say I disagree! The ferry was a lot of fun though even as foot passengers and we enjoyed both ways. Just about to settle down to a Harry Potter film with Abi while himself takes a shower. Didn’t eat too much! Going to fast tomorrow and do a bit of walking to make up for today.

Eleri, welcome to the forum. Will catch up with you soon but have to sort this seven year old first and then get her to bed.

    Gilgil

Hello again everyone and especially to Eleri who has sussed us out as the forum to join, quite rightly of course. We offer years of wisdom and common sense which we then apply to this intermittent fasting project. We have Deerhunter and her man who have been successfully confronting the weekly fasts for some months now and who in my opinion are stars. We have great enthusiasm from Filly girl and masses of terrific info from Peter. And then we have the joker in the pack, me who tries and frequently gets it wrong but amazingly enough manages to lose weight and feel wonderful despite it all. Eleri, could you have a little bit of welsh in you? If not, then you must know that is the root of your name! I quite like your suggestion of calorie counted meals for fast days. It’s not that I’m lazy or anything but now himself has dropped out I have to make him a decent meal and it sort of makes me feel just ever so slightly deprived. I will investigate and see what’s on offer and perhaps can get then for two of us, removing the envy and deprivation I’ve been experiencing. It won’t hurt himself to have a slimming meal a couple of times a week and at least he can have wine with his!!!

He says he’s fixed my treadmill! As soon as Abigail leaves tomorrow afternoon I’m up for testing it and then well see whether it gets junked or kept!

How’s this for keeping busy on a fast day ……….. Abigail wants to bake fairy cakes to take with her on her camping weekend and being a rather stupid, over indulgent grandmother, I have said yes. Torture, but at least she’s taking them with her!

I’m looking forward to the fast tomorrow. Although I haven’t overdone it today, my body is telling me I feel stuffed and my middle is bloated. Yep, this 5:2 is a powerful thing. Enjoy it everyone whether fasting or normal on Friday. Be in touch soon. Gilgil

Hi Gilgil and everyone – you are indeed the forum to join. Many thanks for the welcome messages. Gilgil you are right – Eleri is a Welsh name and at the moment I am writing from North Wales. The clouds are right down near the ground and it is cold and drizzling – what you would expect for half term really!
I didn’t mean weight loss meals, although as Deerhunter says that could be a good idea too – I meant the meal replacements usually in the form of shakes and wondered if any of you have tried them. I have checked out a couple and one of the main ingredients seems to be sugar or an equivalent. There may be better ones available – anyone know? I thought they might help sometimes on fast days, say for breakfast.
Not that I have started yet – visitors have turned up. So I am calorie counting a bit and eating a lot of salads. And using the Wii Fit. Better than going out in the rain!
Roll on my first real fast day. I did a supervised 9 day fast a long time ago where we only had weak black tea, water and fluids mixed with linseed – there were various choices for the fluids and I chose oat gruel that had been strained to get the bits out! I didn’t find it difficult after the first couple of days, so it will be interesting to see how the 5:2 works out.

Glad you had a good trip and didn’t eat too much of that French food. What I remember of Calais is that it was very ordinary and not much to look at. I can understand your Grandaughters views . Still it was nice to have a break from routine for a few hours. Hope your Mr. Grumpy is feeling better. I’ve got one of those sometimes ( they’re not related are they??) Only joking.
Good luck with the baking. I’m about to go and make some Anzac biscuits which are a very traditional fare. Not sure how many calories there would be in each but it’s for the weekend and MM does like a little homemade treat now and again. Soothe the savaged beast and all that!!
Our fast day (#2 for the week)was yesterday. Went quite well, only had 1 oxo drink in the arvo (sometimes I have 2 depending on the calories for the day). Got on the new digital scales this morning and they said 80.1 kgs. So I just might break that 80kg barrier yet!!!!!

I think you’ll find the 5.2 easier than your 9 day fast. Especially when you can eat normally on the other 5 days. The thing to remember is not to overcompensate on the non- fast days , which is what some of us tend to do in the beginning. I never I thought I’d actually look forward to the fast days. I know crazy isn’t it but, I do . I tell myself it’s a little bit of detoxing that my body obviously needed. Cos I sure do feel better for it.
Anyway good luck to everyone and hope you all have a good week-end.

    Good morning all,

Today is my second fast day. My wife made herself a strawberry smoothie using greek yoghurt for breakfast and I stunk the house out with the smell from grilled kippers. It’s a little bit chilly with all the windows open.

My intention was to have a weekly weigh in but my curiosity got the better of me after five days. So, here are the results as given by my scales (Hope it works, they are copied from an Excel spreadsheet)
EDIT1: Having submitted the post, I found that the table didn’t come out too well so added the dots in between the figures

    Date Weight………Body Fat…Muscle…..Water…….BMI
    25/05/14 76kg……23.10%…..33.00%…..56.10%….24.5
    30/05/14 73.7kg….22.30%…..33.40%…..56.70%….24

The astute amongst you will see that the total percentage is over 100%. I don’t know why that should be but at least the problem persists on both sets of figures (114.2% and 112.4%). As I said, accuracy not assured, just a general indication of how things are going. I’m happy with that.

Eleri: Welcome to the forum. Yes, fasting can seem to be a bit daunting but I suppose it’s just a matter of getting used to a different lifestyle. It may take a little time but I’m sure you will get there. I’m using the recipes from the original Fast Diet book at the moment. I’m using the men’s ‘day 4’ today. Good luck.

    Peter

Hi folks – sorry to have been absent, but work called. My word, you all have been busy. It’s my second fast day of the week today so am trying to fill it up with my “to do” list. Errands to be done and the last of the courgettes to be planted (before the slugs get them!).

Deerhunter, I am sure that barrier breaking is just round the corner: won’t be long now. Me, I am happy as long as I don’t go upwards by more than a pound.

Hats of to you, Eleri39 – goodness me, 9 days without solids – very brave.

Peter, I am with you there as far as exercise goes. I “took up” exercise at the grand age of 58 (I was 98 kilos – or 15 and half stone in those days) and go to the gym twice a week now for hard work with weights under the supervision of an expert. Best thing I ever did. Since then I have cycled (for charity) across Rajastan in India and from Panama to Nicaragua!! Although my bike has remained stubbornly in the kitchen since last year. Fair weather cycling only these days.

Doing 5:2 is the best thing I have ever done – it really suits me. I am now within normal range of BMI and very happy not to get too skinny. As I said before the only side effect I have is occasional sleeplessness – fingers crossed, I may have conquered that – I drank a lot of camomile tea and that did seem to help. Thanks so much for all your suggestions – I will work this one out. I need to keep it up for my daughter’s wedding in September.

Thanks so much for setting up this group, Gilgil – it feels very comfortable!

Fastingbelle: Your cycling for charity is really good. Very brave to do it abroad. I don’t know whether I would have the courage to do that or even the nounce to plan it. Well done.

I’m not that brave, Peter. Both were organised rides! But thank you for the kind words.

    Good Afternoon Everyone,

Abigail has gone with 4 dozen Fairy kisses and Fairy cakes to share out with her friends and the parents at the campsite. I didn’t even lick a spoon although himself had an undecorated one with his coffe and I didn’t. Boy do I feel good about myself.

I’m sipping my Bovril at 14 calories a mug and it’s warming and tasty as I write this. I am so impressed with all of you and your stories both past and present.

Peter, you are organised to the point of perfection despite not hitting 100% on your figures but just look at that weight loss, body fat loss, et al after such a short time. I trust your wife is competitive because living with you she would have to be!!! I almost hope you don’t achieve your goals too soon or you will drop off the forum and I would miss you like mad.

Fasting belle, I can’t believe you were once upon a time 98 kg. You have really come so far and must be so chuffed with yourself. This intermittent fasting will be really good for you health wise as well as achieving those last pounds loss. I’m also so very impressed with your bike ride achievements. I did a sponsored ride for British Heart Foundation in 1998 and had a heart attack aged 53 shortly after. A famous Gardeners World Presenter Geoff ? Had a fatal one on a ride at a similar time. He was fitter than me! I have cycled since but when I got fatter I abandoned the bike to the shed. From now on it will be the infamous treadmill!!

    Dear Deerhunter.

You are on the cusp and I suspect have already moved downwards into a new range of numbers on your scales.. Didn’t like changing scales midstream myself and have a problem remembering my starting weight on the old ones because I don’t believe what I wrote down! Does that sound confused because I am! I’ve heard of Anzac biscuits and believe they are as low cal as you can get because they were made in the war when ingredients were difficult to source. Isn’t is amazing how we relish the fast days now? They really do seem to detox you. Have a wonderful weekend and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for those scales to move down past the barrier.

Be well both of you, be in touch soon

    P’nawn da Eleri,

Love the weather up in north Wales! Reminds me of Gower, where we moved from to come here. What a shame you can’t get stuck into the fasting straight away; you must be raring to go and when you do I’m convinced you will be a great success. This forum really motivates us to do well.

Filly girl, you just can’t complain about losing nearly 4lbs in two weeks can you? And just think of all the other benefits Michael Mosley told us about. I can certainly say I haven’t felt this good for ages although I do still get a bit tired some days but not necessarily fasting days. Perhaps it’s just the 68 years, still too much weight to carry around and being a slow learner at pacing myself.

Well everyone, I have been up since dawn (kids wake up,so early) and on the go all that time so I’m off for my little siesta and a re- read of The Fast Diet book, just in case I missed anything the first few times I read it! All of you have a wonderful Friday fasting or otherwise and in case I dont get back to you beforehand, weekend too.

Regards, Gilgil. P.S. I’m not editing this…….too tired!

    Good morning Seniors,

Hope you have all had a happy and sensible weekend! I’m looking forward to hearing all your news.

I’ve been on the treadmill, so yes, himself managed to fix it and I was horrified to find it hard work. Got sweaty, breathless and very raised pulse in no time at all so that slight built in incline is a good indicator of my unfitness. Another challenge which I can’t hide from. I have otherwise had a fairly good weekend and am delaying a weigh in as I can’t take any negatives just now! My trousers keep slipping down though, so I’m optimistic.

We are busy the next few days, with trips to London for treatments for himself. We have these every couple of months, with local things too. Quite tiring and a but worrying. My stepdaughter is keeping me company this time and my stepson will be on duty next time. Our kids are terrific. I probably won’t be posting but will catch up on your good news so please stay in touch.

Thinking of all of you, Gilgil

    Hi Gilgil
Glad you were good on the weekend. We’ve been good too except for those lovely Anzac biscuits. I did some calculations to work out the calories in each one. There are 140 cals in each one. So definitely not a fast day food!!!!!
Our weigh in on our new scales wasn’t real good . I was 80.7 and MM was 93.8 which means we’ve gone up. Oh dear I think I prefer my old scales if only they hadn’t died!!!.
Never mind we’ll keep going as those ‘loose’ clothes are good.
Sounds like you will have lots of fun with your ‘new best friend’. Give it time it’ll take a while before you get comfy with it.
Good luck with the hospital visits. It’s good that you’ll have company with you.

Well we are on fast day 1 of the week . Hasn’t been too bad kept busy with the housework but, looking forward to dinner of home made vege soup. Yum!!!

    Take care
    Cheers Deerhunter

    Hello everyone,

Gilgil, Good to hear that the treadmill is up and running. Remember that rest days (from the treadmill) are just as important as using the treadmill in order to avoid any niggling injuries. It may not seem like it at the moment but you will get stronger.

I hope all goes well with the series of treatments for ‘himself.’

Like Deerhunter, I too had a ‘treat’ this weekend. My wife made an aptly named Eve’s pudding. It is made with apples and like Adam, I too was tempted, twice. My wife was a bit worried that the cooking apples may be a bit sour tasting because the recipe she used didn’t call for sugar to be sprinkled over the apples. As it happens, the pudding tasted great, both times.

Friday was my last fast day. The evening meal was a from a recipe in the Fast Diet book. The marinated 90g sirloin steak tasted great but looked pretty damned lonely on the plate with salad. The weighed, unsalted peanuts in the salad produced an odd number of peanuts to share between my wife and I. Things got pretty tense between us. An extra peanut maintained marital bliss.

    Keep smiling.

    Peter.

    Hi everybody
Gilgil glad to hear your treadmill is now working just take it easy. Good luck with the
