  • Hello all, I’m a 64 YO man, 5’10” 183 lbs in pretty good physical shape with great vitals and blood chemistry. I work out regularly (free weights and HIT on a spin bike) and eat a healthy diet. I also dance ballroom and Latin 2-3 days a week. I’ve been interested in intermittent fasting for some time for the potential health and life extension benefits. I’d also like to trim ~13 lbs of fat without losing any muscle. I’m planning on doing the 500 cal fasting on my off days from exercise so it will be 5 days of fasting in a two week cycle

Yesterday was my first fast day. I wasn’t hungry when I got up and had a couple of cups of coffee in the morning. It was an off day for intense exercise for me but I went to the gym at 1:00 and did an easy ride on the spin bike for 20 minutes. I had my first meal at 2:00, a can of skinless sardines with mustard, 2 cups of steamed veggies and 2 tsp of olive oil (310 cal). I went for a walk at sundown and had my next meal at 8:00 3ozs of lean ham and a bowl of home made vegetable soup (275 cal). I had a slight headache before bed but I slept well. I feel fine this morning and not real hungry.

I will try to space my meals better next fast day.

    Hi diverdog,

My first fast day I also got a headache at the end and found it difficult. My second fast day was significantly easier and since then it hasn’t been difficult at all. This has mostly been the experience I have read from others on this forum, that the first day is the hardest.

Given this, you are already over the hump.

Phil, I didn’t find the fasting difficult at all. I think for my next fast day I will eat one 500 cal meal at ~1:00. This will give me two ~18-19 hour fasting periods. I had blood drawn today to track IGF-1 as I am mostly concerned with health and not weight loss.

Yesterday was the first after fast day and I wasn’t any hungrier than usual. I ate my usual reasonably healthy meals with generous portions and compressed them into a 9 hour period with the last meal at 6:00 PM. Did my circuit style weight training and ballroom dancing for 1 1/2 hours. I’m a little sore today as I took 3 weeks off from the gym. Not hungry this morning. Tomorrow will be a fast day.
