  • Hi world!

I’m about to start this whole she-bang this week… I’d like to get any pro-tips about starting (things you wish you’d have known to begin with).

I’m 28, female and quite tall. That’s my online-dating pitch to new prospects. In terms of friends, I am on a constant search for laughter, joy and raspberries.

I welcome all responses! My main question is this: How long does it take before you start seeing pounds drop?

    Best from Ohio,

    Hi and welcome:

The way you do 5:2 is to go to bed, get up, eat 500 calories during your waking hours, go to bed, wake up and eat ‘normally’ – twice a week. ‘Normally’ means to eat your TDEE or less.

Here are some tips for those just starting:

Here is what you need to know about TDEE (and about how fast you might lose weight): http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/tdee-for-the-curious-or-why-dont-i-lose-weight-faster/

    Good Luck!

    Hi KC

Welcome to this amazing Way of Life (WOL).

Firstly, do please read the thread on tips for newcomers. It’s important to calculate your total daily energy expenditure (see the ‘How’ tab above) and eat 1/4 of that on your two fast days and try not to exceed it on your non-FDs. If you are also fairly active (lots of us use pedometers) you should see a steady loss of 1-2lb weekly.

Also, if you haven’t watched Dr Mosley’s TV show on intermittent fasting, then please read the book as it not only explains the underlying science but also the rationale.

I expect you will see results at your first weigh-in and, if you are a regular dieter, you will probably dismiss that as ‘just water’ which it may well be. However, over time, you will not only see changes on the scales but also changes in your shape.

There may be weeks when you seem to be getting nowhere but the tape measure is as useful a tool as the scales. At the outset, measure your waist plus as many other areas as you can be bothered with and you will notice decreases in measurements even if the scales seem to be stuck. Some of us have even found we have dropped a shoe size, or our rings are now loose.

Reading this forum is a good way to distract yourself on fast days. Remember the 4Ds when hunger pangs hit – distract yourself, take deep breaths, drink water and delay responding to them. I also find cleaning my teeth makes me not want to eat.

    Good luck with your journey.

Any time you change your eating patterns, you lose weight and the 5:2 plan is no different.

How much you lose depends on how much you have to lose and if you are really able to determine what your body needs to eat on the non fast days (or count calories to have it be below your TDEE value). Eat until you are satisfied, not full.

Some don’t lose. Other lose 5 lbs.

    Fantastic, all!

I just listened to a bit of Dr Mosley–very exciting stuff.

I actually tried this a bit last year when my friend introduced me to it, but gave up in my third week. I think if I have a better understanding of what’s happening and why, I’ll have more stick-to-it-ness this go.

My thanks to all for responding. I wish you the best of luck as well, and hope to see you on the boards!

    K.C.
