  • Hi everyone,

I have been a silent reader here and was amazed at how all of you managed to do the 5:2 plan which I would have think it is really tough.

Sad to say I have yet to start but am thinking of investing in a Juicer where I can tell myself that there should be no further excuse for me to put this on hold.

I need to find out from everyone here on the below :-

    1) If I were to do a 5:2, does it means that I only Juice fast & nothing else? as in no other solid food?

    2) What sort of food plan can be 500cals a day? Can anyone share their food plans?

    3) I see that many people seems to have severe headache starting this 5:2. Is this really bad as I am thinking of doing it during my working hours.

    4) Can I drink lotsa water or tea or coffee during the 5:2 fast?

Thanks in advance for any replies. =)

    Hi and welcome:

I guess you can get a juicer if you want, but you don’t need one for 5:2.

You can eat 500 calories of your favorite foods – you don’t need a food plan.

Headaches usually come from lack of fluid. You can drink any fluid you want, as much as you want, as long as you stay within your 500 cal. limit.

    Here are some tips: http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/warnings-to-newbies/

    Good Luck!

    Hi there,

Thanks.. I guess I was trying to go on Juice fast diet.. heheehe..

So I am thinking of trying 5:2 with 2 days on Juice fast. hmmm.. wonder if that works.

Generally for 5:2 diet, its basically to just eat normal for 5 days & then eat food intake of 500cals for 2 days am I right to say?

I am trying to find recipes that can last me for 500cals a day which I can follow.

    Thanks once again!

I hope to be on the successful route with all of you here.

    Hi crieels
There is really no hard and fast way to have your 500 cals but a lot of people have a small breakfast and then nothing to eat until dinner with lots of black tea or coffee or water in between.
I’ve been doing this for around three months and have settled into porridge for breakfast with a coffee and then dinner is either a salad or steamed veggies with some sort of protein for dinner.
I keep the food simple and easy . protein and fiber are your friends for helping you to feel full on fast days. Drinking lots of water also helps with this.
Have a bit more of a read around this web site and you will find lots more helpful info.

This has been the easiest and most effective way of dieting that I have ever followed. I’m down approx ten kilos and clothes that I couldn’t fit into when I started this diet are now getting baggy on me.

    Welcome Crieels!

I use both a juicer and a blender. As you probably know there is a huge difference between the two: the blender uses the whole vegetable/ fruit, so you will get all the fibres, while the juicer extracts all the juice and leaves the pulp behind.

Now the problem with the juicer is, that a) it is expensive as you need a fair amount of vegetables/ fruits to extract the juice and b) the juice is not very filling. The other issue is that most of the stuff that gives you lot’s of juice also contains a lot of sugar, I.e. carrots. On the positive side, all the nutrients go pretty much directly into your bloodstream with very little digestion required.

The blender has the advantage that you use the whole vegetable with all it’s fibres. This is particularly of advantage if you do not like to eat a lot of veggies. It is easy to blend I.e. one apple with spinach and kale as it makes it a bit sweeter and easier to “tolerate”.

Now the way I use both: I make once or twice a week a juice from a small amount of carrots (sugar !), celery, beets (sugar), perhaps a cucumber and one apple. This is my “base” for my smoothies: I take a small glass of my juice, put it in the blender with spinach, kale, some almonds or home made peanut butter (small amount) and a spoon of protein powder. Sometimes I also put my leftover veggies into the blender with the above, such as brussel sprouts, cauliflower and/ or broccoli.

The whole smoothie comes to around 500 cal and I sip from it from breakfast until dinner on my non fast (!) days. It gives me all the nutrition I need and some more!

On my fast days, I do not eat anything until dinner time and I drink tons of tea or water during the day. In the evening it is quite often two soft boiled eggs, some veggies and some Ryvita “bread”, followed by a Greek yoghurt.

Anyhow, if I had to decide between a juicer and a blender, I would definitely go for a blender as you can do so much more with it and you get all the fibre from your veggies. (I use mine at least twice a day) As said, beware, a lot of veggies, leave alone fruits have a very high sugar content and you will reach your calorie goal very quickly!

    Hope this helps a bit?

    Best of luck
    Stef.

    Hi Ghostgirl,

Thanks~~ Woo.. knowing that you have been doing this 5:2 for 3 months and you drop 10kilos? That is a lot! =) I hope to drop some sizes too.

Ok it’s good to know that simple porridge helps. What I am thinking of perhaps would be say : –

Breakfast : Cereal drink or Milk with Oats

Lunch : Sliced fish soup or plate of mixed fruits (like papaya, pineapple, watermelon etc)

Dinner : Boiled broccoli with sautéed mushrooms or Cereal drink again

Does the above looks ok for under 500cals a day?

    Hi Stef,

Thanks! You sure help a lot here.

In fact, I bought a blender recently thinking that I can blend fruit juices at work & drink it but I was wrong. For instance, I blended 2 oranges, 1 slice of lemon & 1 carrot, however the entire juice is too thick I couldn’t even drink it! I guess all the fibre & pulps add to the thickness of this.

Then only I realized that I would actually need a Juicer instead of a Blender to get juices to drink which is why I am intending to buy a Juicer next. But then again, my Blender will be wasted as I am not sure what I can use it for.

So perhaps like what you have mentioned, maybe if I were to blend some fresh milk + oats + bananas etc.. and make it a smoothie, I would take this as breakfast too?

And thanks again!! I didn’t know that carrots = sugar! I would only think that carrots aid the eyesight. As for vegetables, I have not been adventurous, I have only tried celery, carrots & tomatoes. I read that kale & purple cabbage & beetroot is good too but I have not know how to mix them yet.

hi Crieels and welcome to the forums from me too!!

already lots of fab advice given so i’ll just add good luck and enjoy your journey 🙂

yes welcome to the forum–it’s a great eating plan , a great way of life–for all newbies the sound advice is to read the book or watch the programme so that you have a good idea about the health benefits–that it is not a speedy weight loss programme but all up a slow and steady way of losing weight and gaining alot of other health benefits. For me I found the recipe book to be a god send, lots of easy and tasty meals so it has helped me make changes on non fast days too.
I gave up my juicer because of the lack of fibre and high sugar content. I’m with Stef the blender is much better because–use less fruit (hence less sugar) and you get the fibre.
all the best and oh remember to take your measurements–the scales are not always our best friend !!

Thanks all for the nice effort of encouraging each other.

I am still thinking of a juicer and I hope that I can put to good use on what juice is good to consume.

A blender which I had seems to have too much of a fibre which makes it too thick for me to drink I dunno why.. hmm..

I would like to embark on this 5:2 next week and hopefully I will be able to share with everyone here too on my success story.

@crieels if the blended stuff is too thick, why not add a small amount of water while it’s blending. You’re really better off having the fibre of the veg/fruit as it helps keep your blood sugar levels from spiking (can’t remember right now where I read the medical research article on that).

As far as whether your meal plan is under 500cals, you’ll need to measure the items & calculate it. Your idea of a portion size isn’t going to be the same as someone elses. There are plenty of online calorie counters you can use to see if it is. Cos this is something you need to be educated on as you’re the one responsible for your choices.

I’ve not had a headache on a fast day, and I get lots of headaches compared to some. Neither has anyone I know in real life who’s doing 5:2

My meal plan on fast day settles into really simple stuff now I am almost two months into 5/2.. I have a weetabix and skimmed milk for breakfast (under 100 calories) and most often something like a nice soup and couple of ryvitas for dinner……always under 400 calories…another favourite is a chickpea, couscous and tuna salad for tea, because you can eat a decent sized portion….other times it is just as simple as beans or tomatoes on piece of wholemeal toast.

On fast days…like today, I really cope by drinking plenty of water and a few coffees….it is amazing how quickly hunger pangs do disappear if you just sip a glass of water….they DO not get stronger and stronger, which was my fear!

I actually always feel pretty energised and motivated on fast days because I know it is working. I have decided to weigh myself only once a month and after one month on diet I had lost 8lbs…I don’t expect to lose at that rate going forward, but I reckon 4-6 lbs a month will see me shed the two to two and a half stone I want to get rid of!!!

So keep going …this really does work!

As said above, blend your pulp with some water or unsweetened Almond milk. Actually, any liquid will do!

    Stef.

    Hi Arla,

Yes I did added water when I was blending and also after which the mixture is still too thick, I added more water but I just I was expecting juice instead of all the pulp & fibre so I guess that is why. May I should try to get used to these pulp & fibre as I had read that they are good but also for days on juice fast for example, my friend did told me that there should not be any pulp or fibre where these takes a longer time to digest.

Sorry for asking so much as I m uncertain.

    Hi Nlwtasha,

Cool.. thanks for sharing what you had. I am thinking that I will be starting my 5:2 next week on Tues & Thurs & I hope that I will be able to last with either 1 Breakfast & 1 Dinner or maybe 1 light Breakfast, 1 light Lunch & 1 Dinner but somehow I feel that by having 3 meals in a day to be under 500cals is indeed a challenge.

I am also surprised to know that by drinking a lot of coffee helps on fast days.. Usually I will drink warm water with lemon wedges & I am still thinking that perhaps I can still stick to this lemon water thingy.

May I ask when you weigh yourself once a month, how often do you do 5:2? As in you fast 2 days every week? Meaning 8 days a month? And after which you weigh yourself? Its inspiring to know that you managed to lose 8lbs in a mth!

    Good for you!

p/s: I have read elsewhere in this forum that there was weight gain after 1st fasting & I was scared..

    Hi Stef,

Thanks.. maybe I will try my blender again & see how that works with much more water.. =)

I am planning my fast days diet plan to see what I have to be under 500cals.

Also may I check, is it true that if you do not hit under 500cals on 5:2, for example, if you are touching perhaps anything about 500cals then you will get double weight gain.. is this true?

    Crieels:

I have no idea where you received that ‘information’ from, but it is wrong.

This will explain how every diet works: http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/tdee-for-the-curious-or-why-dont-i-lose-weight-faster/

    Good Luck!

    @simcoeluv,

Hi, if you are talking about the information about weight gain.. its here..
    http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/weight-gain-after-1st-fast/

However I do understand that no matter is it weight gain or weight loss.. it is a good way to fast & sort of cleanse our system? Generally I still see many more successful stories here..

I will try to see how things go next week and its good to have so many support here too.

    ^Fighting^

    Crieels:

All that thread refers to is simple water retention. The body can vary two or more pounds daily in either direction as a result of water retention or dehydration. This is the major cause of ‘weight gain’ by people that are doing their diets as they should. Fat is still burning off, but the resulting weight loss is masked by the water retention. This can go on for several weeks, and some then claim they are on a ‘plateau’. As soon as they get on a scale at a time when the body is at a more or less normal water level, they see a weight drop.

For starters, all you need to do is eat 500 calories or less twice a week. Do that for at least a month before deciding if you need to do anything else.

    Good Luck!

    @simcoeluv,

    Thanks for enlightening..

I will just keep my fingers crossed & hopefully I can pass this & survive. =)

Good luck Crieels….coffee and water suit me, but the lovely thing about this way of eating is find out what works for you..I know loads save their 500 calories for evening meal, but I like having a small breakfast.
As for weighing yourself, I would just say don’t get obsessed with it. I know I am a good few stone overweight….I also know my weight can fluctuate a good pound or two in a day, so once a month suits me.

I tend to weigh on a Saturday morning, after I have fasted the previous Tuesdays no Thursday….I believe the key is to weight the same time each time every time to get a good comparison.

The thing is it just works this system….it really does. And while I didn’t believe it to start with, I really quote enjoy fast days because I know I can do it..I know it is working and I kinda feel I have conquered hunger…it really doesn’t kill you!

Cries, what blender do you use? I have a blendtec which blends anything I throw at it to a super fine smoothie. The fibres, even from raw broccoli are so blended that I can not detect them.

Before my blendtec I had a kitchenad which is a great blender, but has much less power. Therefore not good for blending raw veggies, with the exception of spinach.

    Stef.

    Hi all,

Thanks for the all the advice.

Nlwtasha, I will be starting my first tomorrow and hopefully I can last out.
I will also like to have a small breakfast and light lunch then maybe soup for dinner or veggs.. its depends.. I am not the sort who will save all 500cals for dinner.. which is totally not me.. as I know I will definitely give up if that’s the case. I would like to make things comfortable and hopefully last through for as long as I can ..

I have a question to ask… for example, my dinner tonight is at say 7.00pm so I will start my 5:2 tomorrow morning at 8am so technically, when should I end my fasting for 5:2? Is it the Wednesday morning 8am?

    Hi Stef,

I had a Tefal blender.. maybe it is quite small so not that powerful and thus not everything can be blended really well.

I am thinking of starting with Jucier first which makes it easier to drink.

@crieels – this is an example: eat a normal dinner on Monday night – if 7pm is your usual time that’s fine. On Tuesday eat/drink only 500calories (if you’re a woman, 600 for men). You can eat 5/6 x 100cal meals or 1 x 500/600 cal or nothing but water. Whatever is easiest for you is what is right. On Wednesday eat a normal breakfast, and continue to eat normally until your next fast day.
