  • I want to start. So I eat the TDEE 5 days and 500 2 days? Do the 2 days have to be in a row or can it be any days? Wen I get to the weight I want how do I do it then? Anything else I need to know? Please help.
    Thanks, Sharon

    Hi Sharken and welcome:

This thread will answer most of your questions. If you still have some, ask on the thread and I will answer: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/the-basics-for-newbies-your-questions-answered/

    Good Luck!

Michael Moseley actually recommends non consecutive fast days, but the original 5:2 diet by Harvie and Howell, the one where there is an actual study to back it up, has consecutive fast days. Also you don’t necessarily have to count calories on non-fast days, though, of course, if you eat a lot over your TDEE on non-fast days you will negate the calorie deficit achieved on fast days.

As for maintenance, Dr. Moseley recommends doing fewer fasts – so he switched to 6:1. Krista Varady has done studies on this, and in those studies, maintainers switch to 1000 calorie fasts instead of 500.

I am maintaining a 50lb weight loss, and I still fast as much as I used to, mostly because my non-fast days are a bit out of control lately.

    Good luck!

Maryann, you lost 50 lbs doing the 4:3 right? That’s what I am going to try…but on my mom fast days I’ve been eating out at restaurants and fast food for some meals (while staying within my calories). Will I still lose weight?

Yes, Lilyjakaj1, that’s what I did. I don’t see why not, especially if you are staying within your calories. I live in Japan, and eating out is a lot healthier here–portion sizes are much more reasonable, for example.

    Good luck!

Yeah i dont know I was just curious! Also, how much did you weigh originally and how tall are you?

Just a caution…the tdee calculations are usually quite far off target. I wasn’t losing much until I corrected that. Mine said over 2000 calories a day. I dropped that to around 1200, dropped most carbs and sugar, and added another fast day. Kind of like the fbd.

Ooooo goodness really? That’s terrible. How am I supposed to know if mine is far off? I eat about 1800 calories on my non fast days. Cause that’s what my TDEE said!

Yep. I read that some people type in their goal weight on the tdee calculator, and choose activity level one step down from what they actually think they do.

I really started noticing the weight falling off faster after I dropped carbs quite a bit. Again, like the fast beach diet. Or Atkins.

Also, I started not eating breakfast every day, so go about 16 hours between dinner and the next days first meal. No snacking between meals. First meal lots of protein. Stuff like that. Hope that might help you!
