  • Hi

I am 40 yo male and have just completed my 3rd week on the fast diet. I currently fast on a Monday and Wednesday, I have taken this up as I have some fat to shift from my stomach and waist. I am fairly active, usually running 3 times a week, up to 10k and this will increase as I am training now for the Great North Run and the Birmingham Half Marathon and also do sport kickboxing, including tournaments and sparring. I am 6’4″ but am a little over weight, currently at 16 stone. I have been at the 16 stone foe 3 weeks, and my waist isn’t getting any smaller. I do feel better and an the fast days I seem to be like the energiser bunny!! I do calorie count and stick fairly close to my TDEE, sometimes a little over and sometimes a little under, but the weight and fat don’t seem to be shifting. I feel a little down about it. Anyone have anything similar happen ?

    Thanks
    🙂

    Hello.
I do 16:8 and swim twice a week (up to seventy lengths now!. I’ve been swimming twice a week for three years now and dieting my whole life it seems, although only a couple of months of fasting. I should, by rights, look like an upside down triangle by now but, it’s not happening…. yet. So I can’t help but I’m with you on this and admire you for all you’re doing!
    Chrissie.

Thanks Chrissie, 70 lengths is an awful lot of Swimming, very hard work I bet!!

I guess we have to just keep plodding on with it 🙂

Just a couple of thoughts, since I struggled at first also.

The TDEE calculations, no matter where you get them, are always high. Mine, for example, was supposed to be over 2000! I have never eaten that much! Well, maybe on holidays! But I knew I would never lose that way.
So in addition to 5:2, I added another day, and began (and have continued to do) the Fast Beach Diet. I dropped most of my carbs (bad carbs, that is, even whole wheat), and limit fruit to an Apple a day. No snacks between meals, go at least 16 hours between dinner and breakfast.
Also, exercise and weight training build muscle and inflammation. So yes You will put weight on. Since you are training, I imagine you have to eat a lot of carbs and protein so I don’t know how this would work for you. Maybe check out the Lean Gains site. He is a body builder with so little fat, it scares me! But he developed the fasting regimen for body builders.

It’s true that exercise can cause inflammation and water weight, but if you’re doing a consistent amount, that number shouldn’t change much. If you’re in calorie deficit, you should lose weight. fitnfast may be right that your TDEE estimate is high. You could try lowering your non-fast days a bit or you could try throwing in another fast day. In any case, good luck!!
