  • I am contemplating whether or not to go back to back with my fast days. I am already into my second fast day and wondering if anyone does this method. Will it be more beneficial to me? I feel great at the moment, I haven’t eaten anything since Monday 7pm. All I had was a cup of Bovril last night and black coffee, water and an occassional cup of tea.
I think I want to feel like I have fasted and also I have my eat days more in a row. Has anyone got any thoughts on this.
    Greatly appreciated!!

If you put “consecutive fasting” in the search box you’ll find lots of info on this topic JayneyJ

    Thanks Humphrey will do that…..

Well I fasted yesterday and all was fine although I had a very restless night, not because I was hungry just lots going on in my head so couldn’t settle
But today I don’t feel hungry at all I have had my orange juice and coffee and that is all I want, so is it ok to have another fast day my days are usually Tuesday and Thursday

I’m into my 2nd day of back to back. Just rode 13 km to work and boy i can feel a difference in energy (comparative to other rides). All good though, I’ll have a couple of hard boiled eggs a bit later and see how this picks me up.
    Day is only young!

Makes it seem a little long when I will finish at 18:00 tomorrow night…

Miss fits do you mean you have less energy or more? If more, then i wonder if that’s because you’ve exhausted your glycogen stores and have switched to fat burning? If you felt it harder its because you’ve haven’t exhausted your glycogen stores and are still struggling to make a transition to fat burning. At least this is how i would explain it. Some times i feel sluggish and i think a lot of it must be to do with this aspect.

I do b2b But i don’t stick to liquids etc. The recommendation is to eat 500 calories or 1/4 of your TDEE – it doesn’t really matter which you choose. No way i could do it if i ate no food. Or at least , it would be so hard that i couldn’t keep it up for many weeks. I think its because of the difficulty of water fasting that MM came up with 5:2 500 calorie fasting. I have done and tried and failed at water fasting because of the hunger.

Food wise, i find the best routine is more or less like this:

No breakfast. At most a tea or coffee. Food seems to kickstart your appetite. A cup of miso soup or similar, or hot black unsweetened tea or just hot water would be an alternative.

Lunch: Have it when you find yourself getting hungry. Go for protein foods, big salads and or cooked vegetables but with olive oil for energy so i steam then sauté mine. Yesterday though i only had a can of sardines for lunch which was fine. Sometimes i make a wonderful fish stew from my much loved Mediterranean cookbook.

Dinner: again, when you get hungry which for me is usually later afternoon early evening. And more food along the lines of lunch. Yesterday i had a carrot on the way home from work-shopping because i was starting to feel hungry so i had to forego the big green salad i had planned. But it put the dampeners on my appetite and I was able to wait another hour before dinner which was grilled salmon with lemon juice.

I had about 5 cups of nescafe with milk through the whole day. Usually i have less coffee because i eat more vegies. But today i was trying to keep the carbs even lower than usual. ( don’t usually have two fish meals).

Go to bed when/if you start to feel hungry in the evening. Drink plenty of fluids through the day.

Low carbs makes it easier re your appetite. And you lose a lot of water.

I would not have a fruit juice for breakfast. They are not even great diet food to be straight up. Juices are calorie dense HIGH GI food. Meaning it doesn’t satisfy for long. A whole piece of fruit is much better (its also more nutritious) but i don’t trust myself with it on a fast day.

I tend to do each time a bit differently but its more or less along these lines.

This week, i blew my b2b fast on Sunday and so i did my second day on Monday. I think boredom and having breakfast buggered me up. I had breakfast because i woke up hungry on Sunday. I guess i had to relearn the breakfast lesson. I felt really shit blowing my Sunday fast but its also likely hat i felt really shit and that’s why i blew my fast. I think it was just an off day. But i ate good food and recovered well on Monday. And today i have registered a new low.

For me, i think the only advantage that i’ve noticed is psychological. I find it easier usually to do two consecutive days. But you know this could change at any time. It is good to fast on days you’ve got engaging activities planned.

From the point of view of weightloss, i can’t see that there’d be much difference. From the point of view of health, i’ve no idea really. Obviously the healthiest approach will be the one you can sustain long term.

For this reason, i periodically try to do 16:8 fasting on non-fast days with the idea that if 16 hours of fasting gives you IGF1 benefits of fasting. If i do that i generally go for two large meals a day. and nothing after my last meal, not even coffee milk because that would defeat the purpose.

Anyway i guess you have to tailor what you do to your lifestyle and try to eat in a way which supports you agenda and keeps your appetite under control. If you make it too hard for yourself, you’ll end up quitting. Bit of flexibility is good.

Thanks for the reply Patience 🙂
I was absolutely KNACKERED after my usual ride to work! Had a physical day at work – chose to not ride home as I plan to do a weights session tomorrow morning…want to save some energy.
Could be ‘I’m just adjusting’ to lower calorie intake – nonetheless, I’m happy with sticking with the 500, it’s not too bad really.
Start with a wheatgrass shot @ 0530 then two eggs with a spoon of cottage cheese about 0900.
1430 I have a meal shake and celery then a big salad about 1800.
I finish tomorrow night about 1800 (another 22 hours or so & a chunk of that I’ll be zzzzzzzzzzzz)
Week one. As you say, do what works best for me, I like the idea of flexibility.
