  • Hi,
My name is Catherine and today is my first day living with 5:2 fasting. I have started this challenge to try to regain my pre-baby (she is now 4 years old!) body. I was about 65kg and now at my heaviest I creep up to 78kg. Today I am a positively skinny 76kg! I also want my energy back. I am feeling really low and tired all the time – something I attribute to poor diet and not enough exercise.
Today is Fast day #1: Veg juice for breakfast at 60kcal.
Leek and potato soup for lunch at 120kcal.
I am planning on some chicken and a little sweet potato for my dinner.

Other than that it has been herbal teas and water – something I used to enjoy!

    Wish me luck!

    Hi Cath

Like you, today is my first day too. Bizarrely, also like you I’ve started at 76kg and have the same goal weight! I’ve been using the ‘My Fitness Pal’ tracker for calories and I think I’ve got about 150 left for tonight. So lots of water/fruit tea/black coffee for me until then!

May I ask where you’re sourcing your recipes for your fast day? I’m just looking at soups at the moment but I’m guessing there’s going to come a time when I want to chew something!

    Take care and good luck!

    Hi PP,
If I am honest I have gone for the lazy option. The juice was a carton from the supermarket (it is freshly squeezed juice but has the calories printed on the carton). Same for the soup.
For dinner I intend to grill a chicken breast and slice a sweet potato into “chips” and spray with low cal. cooking spray before oven baking. I use google to find out the calories. 100g sweet potato = 86kcal. 100g chicken breast = 110kcal. I think my chicken breasts are about 100g (although I will weigh to check) and I’ll then adjust the amount of potato I allow myself accordingly. A liberal grind of salt and I’ll have diet chicken and chips!
I do have some pineapple salsa that I can use a small amount of to up the flavor. Balsamic vinegar and soya sauce are also good high flavor / low cal. options.
I drink herbal tea, black coffee or sugar free squash to avoid “wasting calories on drinks.

    Good luck to you too!

Hi, I am starting today too. I’m keeping it simple, since I have no desire to cook on a fast day: tuna and a little veg, protein shake, lots of coffee!

Hi Cath2907 re your Chicken breast, just a suggestion, ignore if you like. Take a skinless Chicken breast, butterfly it. Open it up, cover with kling film and beat the living daylights out of it until fairly thin, about 1/4 of an inch thick. Either spray with low fat spray or rub a little olive oil on both sides. Place on a hot griddle pan, you will see the chicken cooking through. When almost done, turn over and finish cooking. It should only take 3-4 mins this way. Experiment with flavour filled spice rubs if you like. I usually have mine with steamed veg or a large helping of boiled Spinach.
Good luck with your 5:2 lifestyle.

Hi cath just started this is my first day as well porridge and a banana this morning and salmon spinach and asparagus and a poached egg for dinner

Found it tough at first but loads of water and black coffee got me through

    Good luck gep

UPDATE: well I managed it! 494 calories in total 🙂 Don’t feel hungry now, though at about 4pm, I could have eaten a scabby horse… (pardon the phraseology, but you get the drift). Celery got me through the munchies

    Hello all,

Day One for me today too. May I join you, please?

    Oddly – my weight is very similar.. My starting weight is 11st 12lbs (75kg or 166lbs) and I’d like to get down to 10st 3lbs (65kg or 143lbs) – i.e lose a stone and a half (21lbs).

I had several cups of tea this morning and a diet coke.
12.00 Early lunch – had a cup a soup and an apple
4.00 Very early supper – had an Innocent veg pot
Had an apple and an Options hot chocolate this evening
    TOTAL 520 calories

I also drank lots of water and fruit tea and did some exercise this morning:
20 minutes on the cross-trainer and some toning exercise.

To be able to eat normally again tomorrow is going to feel like luxury!

    Good luck everyone!

    The more the merrier xx

Hi everyone. I fully intended to start this morning but yesterday was Australia Day and I woke up a little under the weather. I will start tomorrow. I’m going to do Mondays, Wednesday, and Friday. It’s my 50th at the beginning of April so I need to lose 8-10kg. I am 68kg at the moment. I need support.
I go back to work on Thursday after 6 weeks holiday so that will help with control.

Hi All hope you don’t ind me butting in .I started a couple of weeks ago at 77kg which at 5 ft 2 is way too much for my height , just weighed in this morning at 74kg so pretty happy with that so far ….got a couple of holidays coming up so need to get into that swimming cossie ! I fast Mondays and Thursdays , anybody got a recipe for tasty under 100 calorie soup ?

Hello 🙂 I just started today too! I’d like to lose at least 5 kgs, ideally 10.

I found it difficult but not too bad – I often have protein shakes, so I just had those for lunch and dinner, they’re 130 calories each, plus a few other things to keep me under 500. I’ll do a bit of reading on whether a high-protein fast day is a good thing or a bad thing!

    Hi Lizzy and smarte

I’m so pleased that there are more of us in the same boat! I’m guessing the novelty of the fasting days will wear thin and I definitely will need help and support then.

As for sub 100 calorie soup, I had 300g of Sainsbury’s mushroom soup last night and it comes in at 96 calories. Very tasty AND no cooking, which is always a bonus in my book! It’s worth checking some of the supermarket soups as they’re not as calorie-laden as we might think – some are, so beware!

Just found this link – http://www.allaboutyou.com/health/diet/diet-recipes-5-2-diet-2-day-diet

I like the fact that the recipes are broken down into calories!

thanks Pesky , i do my shopping in Sainsburys so will check it out x

    Hiya all,
I made it through the night without gnawing my husbands leg off in his sleep (he is much relieved I can tell you!) Thanks for the chicken suggestion couscous. I will try that for fast day 2 on Wednesday. Last night I used a little marinade with chilly and lime juice and baked the breast in the oven in tinfoil. It was pretty good.
    My total was:
    150ml veggie juice = 60kcal.
    1 cuppa soup = 117 kcal.
    120g chicken = 132kcal
    150g sweet potato = 129kcal
2 cups of coffee with skim milk and sugar = 70 kcal.
    Total is roughly 500kcal.

The rest of my drinks were water / herbal tea so calorie free. I need to replace my coffee sugar with sweetener but I am really not a fan and coffee is my biggest vice. 2 cups was massively low for me for the day.

Today I am aiming for healthy so have mixed berries and veg juice for my breakfast. Lunch will be sweet potato, coconut and chilly soup and I’ll have dinner with the family. This is a lamb casserole, veg and potato.

Forgot to add a great big CONGRATULATIONS to all those who made it through fast day 1. Hopefully day 2 will be as successful.

My Mum gave me a Daily Mail pull-put on the Fast Diet and it’s got a couple of nice recipes in it. I’m particularly stuck for breakfast recipes, so any ideas are gratefully welcomed. I work from home, so I have ‘breakfast’ late!

Today I’m trying 40g porridge made with 200ml water, simmered with 90g peeled pear and 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Sadly the pear was not sweet so had to add a little honey to make it palatable… Not bad for 220 calories – there’s TONS of it!

I’m going to try to stick close to 1200 calories on the ‘feast’ days, with the exception of probably Fridays – wine & takeaway night!!!

As Cath said, give yourself a pat on the back for surviving your first fast day!

    PP x

I have always found breakfast the easiest meal of the day to not bother with! A herbal tea and being busy will often get me to lunchtime with not a calorie consumed! 🙂
I struggle with snack laden evenings 🙁

Total 0% fat greek style yoghurt with Canderel sweetner and a little vanilla essence is nice enough. That on berries usually does the trick for me if I do need to eat.

1 scrambled egg on a slice of brown toast is about 180kcal. You can add a few tinned toms to that for next to nothing. That comes in at around the same as your porridge.

1 poached egg = 80kcal, 1 rasher of bacon = 70kcal. Team that with grilled toms and a serving of grilled mushrooms and you have a fry up for less than 200kcal.

    Hello All!
I also started my first fast day yesterday – I found it hard but do-able as I had a very busy day (hopefully the rest will be the same but I’m not so sure!) I choose to have all my calories in an evening meal as I find that as soon as I start eating I get the feel for it and can’t stop!

I am currently a healthy weight of 10st, however carry all of this on my lower half (25in waist vs 41 in hips). I am getting married in May and would like to be ‘the best I can be’ and more in proportion!

I am struggling today with non fast day, as now I feel I’ve successfully completed a fast day I should reward myself, which is not ideal, does anyone else feel the same?

I hope you don’t mind me joining, congratulations to everyone for completing the first day!

Hi Smarte where in Oz do you live , my daughter lives in Bondi …unfortunately i’m in cold and wet Scotland

Well that wasn’t planned… Before I knew it, I’d done my second fast day today!

I had a large-ish meal of spaghetti and meatballs (only 600 calories) last night – still didn’t go over 1200 cals yesterday. This morning, I still felt full and the feeling didn’t let up until mid afternoon, so I kept it up! Had a very large bowl of soup tonight (with a little bread!) and still came in under 500 cals!! So that’s my answer: pasta the night before a fast day 😀

    Hope you’re all well xx

Well done PP! It’s surprising how mindfulness and a couple of days restricting your calories can reduce appetite.

I have had two fairly low kcal interval days at around 1400 kcal. Today is fast day 2. So far it is only 8:30am so I am doing really well! Last night I made a lovely turkey curry with coconut milk and spinach. I also had a couple of home made popoadoms and a bit of homemade naan. It was lovely not to have to count all the calories and just to enjoy my dinner until full.

I’ll let you know how it goes!

    Well done PP!!!
Today is also my second fast day and feeling a lot less excited by it than I was on Monday! Thankfully sunny here today so hopefully that will help! Good luck today as well Cath! Lizzie xx

On a fast day today it’s only 11am and I’m so hungry 🙁 made some very low cal soup yesterday so going fill up on that !

Good luck as well Lizzy- we can do it!
I’ve been feeling really nauseous today with the fasting- very different to Monday, I have tried cleaning my teeth/using peppermint lip salve which I found has helped keep hunger pains at bay! Xx

I’m so hungry today I could chew my arm off , I’ve cleaned cupboards to keep me occupied! And had a long chat on what’s app with my daughter in Australia so that’s passed the time ! I can see it being an early tea tonight

Well that wasn’t too bad. Day 2 was far less exciting than day 1 I must admit. However I had a bit of poorly tummy in the afternoon which meant I really wasn’t hungry even though I suspect otherwise I would have been. It cleared up in the evening and left me starving but I had 350 kcal. remaining so had a small sweet potato and a little left over turkey and spinach curry. It filled me up pretty well.
This morning I am enjoying a well earned slice of buttered toast and jam!

    Thanks everyone
Had my evening meal tonight and doing full day fasting tomorrow. …v interesting reading all of your hints and tips
