  • Hi this is my first day starting on the 5:2 diet kinda excited just returning to work tonight from 3 weeks holidays so thought id start afresh and today is my first fast day have decided that my fast days will be tuesday and thursday usually i don’t work those days so thought they may be a little bit kinder on my body that way but for the next 2 weeks will be working on those days so i’ll see how i’ll go . So far so good for breakast had a cup of tea with just a splash of low fat milk no sugar ,1 large glass of water and lunch im having 2x150g bags of birdseye steamed cauli and broccolli and carrots love my vegies ,then dinner i think will consist of kaleslaw, lettuce and a small tin of tuna in brine and 1 boiled egg and plenty of water,so far i hope im on the right track will check in in the morning to say how im feeling .

Hi I’m new as well, having done just a few fast days. I’ve successfully lost almost 100 pounds in the past following a strict low carb plan but have fallen off the wagon the last 5 years and regained about 40.

I am still a low-carb believer and will follow a low-carb plan while incorporating 2 fast days.

From what I’ve researched, i not only want to lose weight but to improve my health so I’ve decided to do 2 24-hour fasts per week. Today is my first, starting at 5 pm last evening and will have my first meal after 5 pm today. I don’t want to have several small low calorie meals as I think once I start eating * will just want more.

So far I’ve had 2 black coffees and am now sipping on an herbal tea. If i really needs something, I’ve brought a litre of vegetable broth (total 30 calories) to work and will sip on that.

I also don’t want to become obsessed with 5-2 low cal recipes etc. I just want to not think about food and go on with my day. I’m hoping that i will learn that hunger is ok and i don’t have to eat just because it’s a certain time of day.

If it takes me another 5 years to lose this 40 pounds, I’m ok with that.

It’s 10 a.m. (been awake since 6:15) and just starting to feel hunger. I’m sure it will pass soon.

Howdy – I’m starting today, too. And like you, june607, I’m a low carb gal. However, I felt I needed a little extra push … and some changes to habits like grazing all afternoon long.

I too think I’ll limit the number of meals – not just calories. I might have a small salad for lunch. We’ll see how hungry I get.

    June, Hi and welcome:

You are not doing 5:2, so you have to make sure you are eating under your TDEE on each of the two days you are dieting (4 days a week) or you will not lose much weight. By that I mean how much you eat before 5 on the first day and after 5 on the second. Count all of your calories, even ‘sips and snacks’.

Here is some information – you might look at #6 in addition to #s 1 & 4: http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/the-basics-for-newbies-your-questions-answered/

    Good Luck!

Just starting today! I have a lot of weight to lose, so here it goes. I’m diabetic and have also recently had a stint put in my main artery. I have been walking for 4 months. No weight loss and no noticeable inches lost. Kind of discouraging. But, I’m not ready to give up yet. I’ve been struggling with bouts of depression because of the heart problems. I think sometimes when the heart problems happen… a person can develop feelings if impending doom! I am trying to keep my head up and not let the depression consume me. Thought this diet and Forum would help. Thank you for listening and wish me luck! ;(

Hi I am starting this week too, learned a bit more after coming to this page, have the book as well. Going to need lots of support & motivation. Looking forward to it!

    Hi Simcoeluv,
I’m not sure why you say that I’m not doing 5-2? Yesterday was my fast day and I had under 500 calories (all after 5 pm). Please clarify.
    Thanks.
    June607

    Hi All,
    My results from yesterday’s fast:
I went 25 hours without food and was amazed at how little hunger I actually felt. I would say that I had about 4 episodes of hunger starting at 10 a.m. lasting until 5 p.m. and all for about 5 to 10 minutes each. No great urgency to eat.

To clarify my plan, I am following 5-2 with two fasting days per week each under 500 calories. I may not have been clear with that previously. I am trying to eat my 500 calories as late in the day as possible.

    example:
    S – regular intake
S – regular intake, last meal 5 pm
    M – fast until 5 pm, 500 calories consumed
    T – regular intake
    W – regular intake – last meal 5 pm
TH – fast until 5 pm, 500 calories consumed
    F – regular intake

    Hi June:

If you read the link I provided you know how 5:2 works. Your eating plan differs because, using your schedule above, it allows you to eat as many calories as you want on Sunday before 5 pm and as many calories as you want on Monday after 5 pm. All I cautioned was that you need to eat below your TDEE on Sunday and Monday to lose weight. Some people eat quite a bit before and after their 24 hour diet period, and some even eat 500 calories during their diet period, and as a result don’t lose much weight. If you are watching your calories and eating below your TDEE each day, great!

    Hi again Simcoeluv,

You made the assumption that i was eating as many calories as i wanted after 5 pm on Monday and as many as I wanted on the Sunday. I never said that. I am following the 5-2 plan.

Thanks for your input, I appreciate your help.

Hi June ,with the 5;2 you eat as normal say on mon, then fast all day tue( except for 500 cals) and dont have anything till wed morning. I dont think you are doing that? The 5;2 involves 2 fasts per week of about 32 to 34 hours each. It is not a 24 hour fast twice a week. Good luck!!

    Hello Kindle,

I’m not sure why my posts are unclear, but apparently they have been. 🙁

Yes, I understand the plan fully. I have researched, read the articles and watched the documentary. I get it.

On two out of seven days I only eat 500 calories.

On the other 5 days I eat normally and preferably under my TDEE.

Yesterday, between the time I woke and the time i went to bed I ate under 500 calories.

The day before, I ate under my TDEE.

My whole point in my post was to say that I have nothing to eat before my dinner meal and I do that to benefit from actual fasting (eating nothing) to improve blood indicators.

I really appreciate everyone trying to help, but I get it. Really.

In same boat as you, just back from a 3 week camping holiday to Nova Scotia, and starting 5:2 after watching the Horizon episode on iPlayer. Hitting 50 next March, tine to stop the degeneration in its tracks! And doing a High Intensity Interval Training Instructor/HIIT course for my own development next Friday, to keep up my Register of Exercise Professionals CPD points u0p as I’m also a Pilates teacher as well as a project manager but an office, which I’m hoping will provide me with the tools to get the exercise bit right! Will post on forum about how I get on.

Hey june, thats great!! Sorry about the misunderstanding. Hope it goes real well…..

Hi everyone, would really love to join you all as I too am new. I’m 60 and not too overweight but feeling really sluggish and carrying all of my excess weight around my tummy. My goal is to lose about ten pounds, get fit and be in optimum health.

Yesterday was my first fast day – I ate nothing all day, just drank water and green tea and had a lean piece if meat with lots of veg’s for dinner. it wasn’t easy, but hopefully it will get easy. Today I’m starved…it will be hard not to over eat today.

June, neither your posts nor your plan are unclear. You do 5:2, and on the fast day have one meal with a maximum of 500 kcals. You try to have that meal 24 hours after your pre-fast meal.

    That’s 5:2.

It takes a little bit of getting used to but it is possible; you’re not the only one who leaves eating as late as possible to hopefully reap the benefits of longer fasting periods.

Most of us find that a decent amount of protein like fish or chicken with a large portion of vegetables or salad is the most satisfying meal on a fast day.
