  • Hi out there
I have been on this diet since February 2013. I am 72″ tall (or at least I was when I was a teenager). I have gone from 289 lbs to 229 lbs. I don’t know what that is in stones.
It looks like the 5:2 is something that I will be on forever. I like my wine and I love food. I have been imbibing in both on my non-fast days and my weight loss has probably been slower as a result- but that is OK with me.
I seem to be prone to allergic reactions more. I at a lot of pineapple when it went on special at the local grocery store a while back. That was a bad idea as my face swelled up and I itched all over. The allergy went away and I have steered away from pineapple but I encountered another allergy yesterday when I had lobster 3 days in a row (they are low in calories- but you have to avoid the melted butter). It seems that I now have to indulge in more moderation that what I am used to. Oh well- I look a lot better (if you don’t look at my swollen face 🙂
The diet works. I have used Atkins many times in my life and have regained everything I lost and then some!
I credit my all-suffering wife for her superb 5:2 meals. Omelet for breakfast, soup for lunch and a curry for dinner Or lobster, etc. Life is grand!

Interesting about the allergies/sensitivities, Canukus. I ad a book called The Plan, and the author says that if you eat a particular food in excess, you can have a reaction, even though it caused no problems before in smaller doses. She recommends rotating foods.

    Congrats on your success!

I don’t know how old you are, but I think as we get older we are just more prone to allergies (my theory!). When I was younger, I could eat anything. Now I’m 60 and I must avoid gluten and dairy. Since my cholesterol is so high I’ve decided to go vegan for a while and see how I feel, since dairy is off the menu anyway.

You are doing so well. I agree, this is the only diet I feel can become a lifestyle. I considered the Every Other Day diet for a while, but then had to ask myself “who am I kidding?”…I hope I do as well as you on this journey.

Yes, I think that my allergic reaction may have been caused by excess. Pineapple was on sale and I love the stuff. After the third one in less than a week, I blew up. Now recently, lobster was on sale (there are so many lobster being caught in the Maritime provinces that they have been closing seasons early) and I had one every day for three days. I am beginning to lose the swelling on my face but I’m still itchy! This is too bad because I love lobster and the calorie count is extremely low when you have it with a bit of lemon juice.
The last time I had an allergic reaction was when I was a kid. At 70 years old, I should know better than to overindulge. If this happens when I drink wine, I’ll shoot myself!
This diet has been so good to me, I think it will be a lifetime thing, despite the increased sensitivities. As I mentioned before however- my wife has found and made some wonderful lo-cal dishes for me (yes, ladies- I do my part around the house but, she is an awesome cook and apart from the barbecue, I only do the donkey work where food preparation is concerned).

    Hi canakus

Whichever way you count your loss; it is might impressive! 60lbs is 4 stones 4lbs or 27.27 kgs by the way.

In a straight 12 months I have ‘only’ lost 20lbs; so a mere 40lbs less than you! Personally I wouldn’t worry about being sensitive to certain foods now if you overindulge in them too often in a short period of time; as you say, at least it’s not wine you are reacting to!

Have you had any evidence of health improvements via blood tests in this period?

    BooBooxx

I wonder about the food allergy thing. My wife, who’s also doing the 5:2, has developed an allergy to Dungeness crab (a wonderful crab from here in the Pacific Northwest). But she too overindulged, and she’s been allergic to wine for years before 5:2. I wonder if 5:2 increased propensity or if it’s just overindulgence or both or neither. I also don’t know if it will go away. The wine allergy isn’t really a problem but the shellfish allergy is a pity.

I should say that she never over-indulged in wine, far from it. And her allergic reactions include a severe headache along with itching and swelling.

Hi Cancukus well done on your fantastic success and your comment about wine and shooting yourself made me giggle too, so thanks for that too!

Funny you should say about allergies or maybe sensitivities; on my son’t birthday I had a moment and demolished the remainder of his chocolate cake after he had gone to bed!! I woke up at 2 in the morning feeling hot, dizzy and nauseous, pretty sure it was his cake!!

I’ve been fasting since Jan 6th, so far I’ve lost 18.5 lbs, probably like to lose about the same again but it’s been very slow lately.

I’m in the UK by the way 🙂
