  • Hi all,

I did my first proper fast day yesterday – it went well, and I felt good! I tried fasting last year, but didn’t do it properly and got discouraged, so this time I bought the book and am sticking to it properly!

Has anyone here lost a lot of weight doing 5:2? I’m a big girl – I’m 45, 6 feet tall with a BMI of 40.8, which was a bit horrifying! I need to lose about 8 stone to get anywhere near a BMI of 25, but I can’t think about it in that kind of amount – it’s too scary! I’d love to hear some success stories of people who have lost a lot, or are on their way to losing a lot. I know I’ll need some encouragement, and I hope I’ll be able to support others too. I know this isn’t just about weight loss, and I’m hoping to avoid diabetes and arthritis as part of the process, but weight loss is my main aim at the mo – for obvious reasons!

My next fast day will be Monday – I’m going to do Mondays and Wednesdays and see how it goes.

Take care all, and thanks for reading!

Best of luck! I’m starting too …but am doing Tuesdays & Thursdays. Keen to make good health a priority.

Hi LibertyHen, hope all has gone well for you today! I had some good news today – we changed the battery in our bathroom scales, and I am now a stone lighter! 😀 Which means my BMI is now 38.9, and I have 7 stone to lose instead of 8! I wonder if changing the battery weekly will give me such good weight losses … 😉

    Hi Annie

Good luck with this. I started nearly two weeks ago at just over 20 stone and a bmi of around 40. Family member has diabetes and my joints have been aching (only 44) so I really need to take action and loose some weight.

So far it’s going quite well. Good to support each other 🙂

    Hi annie:

I like the battery theory. I’d try it if my scale had a battery.

The largest loss I’ve seen reported so far is over 100 pounds. Many, many have lost in the 30 to 50 pound range.

One reason for the numbers (because they can seem modest) is that 5:2 is a slow weight loss diet, and it has only been around for less than two years. At a pound a week, 100 pounds takes two years to lose.

Here are some tips that might help: http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/warnings-to-newbies/.

    Good Luck!

Hi Vivalas, good luck to you as well. My hips, knees and thumb joints are the ones that ache the most – I realised I had a problem when I was needing to take ibuprofen every day just to not ache! Bit of a scary wake-up call!

It will be good to be losing weight (hopefully!!) with others who have lots to lose too. What days are you fasting? 🙂

Hi simcoeluv, thanks for sharing that link – lots of useful info. I really wish the battery theory would work every week!! 😀

Wow, 100lbs loss is great! I know several people who have lost 2-3 stone and kept it off for a year or so doing this, but yes, I guess it’s such a new ‘diet’ that the really big losses will only just be starting to show. Here’s hoping that’ll be me, and Vivalas, in a couple of years!

Annie and Vivalas, best of luck to you! I just started the 5:2 programme, but I have definitely been where you are, and at just about the same age. I’m 51 now. In my mid-forties, after having gained a lot of weight, I started a calorie-counting diet and added exercise, eventually shedding about 85 pounds (6 stone.) It does take a long time, and really, the more slowly you lose it, the better it is likely to go, as any crash diet will tend to leave you putting it back on.

When I started losing weight, I didn’t own a scale and was too ashamed to get on one. For me, that was probably a good thing, as I learned to evaluate my success not on the scale but on how faithful I had been to my plan. When I did finally get a scale to get me the rest of the way (after 50 pounds of loss) I think I became more frustrated, no matter how much healthier my life had become.

    So, there’s that. 🙂

I’m starting out with 5:2, obviously because some of the weight has crept back on over the years, but also because for the first time I’m dealing with somewhat high blood pressure, and I hope to see improvement on that score. I got medical tests recently, and I’m grateful that everything other than weight/BMI and blood pressure was in healthy ranges.

I’m trying to think up some healthy self-rewards for completing two weeks, then four weeks of this regimen. Are you doing that, too?

    Best regards,

    Ann

    Hi Annie and Ann

Annie I’m actually doing 4/3 at the moment because last week I did Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I did it because I went to St Ives for the weekend and knew I’d be feasting a little. Well though I ate and drank what I wanted to it was no where near what I would have done a couple of weeks back and I lost about 5 lbs still, so I was really pleased. I’ve carried on this week with Monday and Wednesday and think I’ll do the third day tomorrow too as I feel quite positive at the moment. I am aware however that I’ll have bad days and fall off the wagon and that’s me unfortunately – I’ve decided though that the 5 2 is very doable for one really big reason . . . . I can always eat normally tomorrow! That for me is different to a diet, when I’m on a diet it’s day after day after day after day of very dull restrictive foods. With this it’s a bit of discipline today and tomorrow whatever I want within reason.

Ann I have a cruise in August and a stag do in Vegas in September so I have my treats only 11 weeks away and they are big ones at that. So whilst I’ll have the odd night out with a nice meal and a few drinks I’m really going to ‘try’ and stay disciplined.

Only slight issue I have at the moment is making the best use of my 600 calories, but that’s another story.

I’m very hopeful this will be a success for all of us 🙂

Second fast day for me today! Just had breakfast of 40g muesli, 50g raspberries, 25g blueberries and 100ml unsweetened almond milk – all for 194 calories. We’re doing a lot in the garden today, so I thought I’d better eat something first. I’ve got carrot sticks and hummus as a snack, and will have a smoked salmon salad for dinner later.

Ann, I think having healthy rewards is a really good idea – I’ll have to have a think about what to have that doesn’t involve chocolate! 😉 As we’re doing a lot to the garden at the mo I might treat myself to some plants … Let me know what you decide to do!

Vivalas, I hope your 4:3 is working for you. I’m thinking I might do that if I plateau at any point.

Good luck all – I hope everyone is enjoying their bank holiday! 🙂

    Hi Annie

So far so good on the 4/3 for me. Not found it as difficult as I thought I would as I think generally my appetite has reduced quite a bit. Still I’m sure there’s a struggle ahead for me and I’ll hit a brick wall sometime. That’s when I’ll need to think positive 🙂

    Hope everyone is enjoying today.

    Hello all!

Really enjoyed reading all these posts… so encouraging! I’m going to start my first day this Wednesday as I have a work do tonight.

I just wondered what works best for people: have breakfast or skip? If you have breakfast, what do you usually eat?

    Thanks! 🙂

LilaSophia, congratulations on your decision to begin 5:2 🙂

If you’re someone who usually eats breakfast, then I would advise sticking with it. Something high in protein like eggs or Greek yogurt with a little real fruit in it (not the commercially sweetened stuff) is a good idea, it keeps you full longer. Some people do OK with porridge, but it’s too carb-based for me, I’d be hungry in two hours.

If you don’t usually eat breakfast, or don’t particularly need it, saving your calories for later would probably work better. A lot of people save all their calories for dinner, but in the beginning you might want to plan a 150- or 200-calorie lunch and a 350- or 300-calorie dinner; some people eat less during the day to save 50 calories for a bedtime snack. Some people need a small snack mid-afternoon. Once again, protein foods and leafy veg are especially good food choices for most people. It’s really a matter of what works for you, but sometimes it takes a bit of planning and experimentation to figure that out. Remember to drink lots of water and no-calorie beverages like black coffee or herbal tea throughout the day. When hunger strikes, remember that it will usually pass in time, deploy distractions. If you go over by 10 or 15 calories, don’t panic. If you go over by more, don’t despair, figure out what you learned from the day and begin again, armed with more information about what does and doesn’t work for you.

Happy fasting! I’ve lost 40 pounds in 40 weeks with 5:2 and increasing my walking to 10,000 steps/day 🙂

    Hi Franfit – THANK YOU!

That’s most helpful advice – I think I’ll aim for the low cal breakfast in that case!

You’ve lost 40 lbs in 40 weeks?!?! That’s amazing!! Did you notice it straight away or was it a few weeks before the weight began to come off?

    I am aiming for that!

    Thank you LS x

I too have a lot to lose and started well but lost my way a bit last week, but am back on it now with a fast day today.

    Good luck to everyone 🙂

Franfit that is amazing, well done 🙂

LilaSophia I do mine slightly differently. I save all my calories up until the evening and have them all then – around 6.30pm. Reason being that if I had a small meal at breakfast or lunch I’d get the munchies and could never stick to my 600 calories. I drink a two litre bottle of still water and that tends to keep hunger at bay. If I struggle I have a diet coke which seems to fill me up.

Meal wise I’ve been having a M & S fuller for longer which is between 350 and 400 calories and some M & S popcorn which is low fat and 145 calories. Those two things keep me satisfied and I’m a big bloke 🙂

    You’re welcome, LilaSophia 🙂

I did start losing some weight right away, but it hasn’t been an even pound a week; some weeks I lost more, some less, some weeks I even seemed to gain a bit back; about every 10 pounds or so my weight loss would stall for two or three weeks, then start back up again if I just carried on. As I get close to goal it seems to be slowing a bit more. But it has been 40 pounds in 40 weeks so far. I think most women who are on the smaller side actually lose a bit more slowly, I think I have been lucky.

One more tip I have is to calculate your TDEE (under the ‘how’ tab above) for your goal weight instead of for your current weight and use the non-fasting days as time to figure out how to eat in a way that’s satisfying for you at that many calories. At my goal weight I only get 1450 calories a day, which is not a whole lot of food, so I think that working on finding ways to be happy with that has helped me to keep losing.

Walking or other exercise can also be a bit helpful, as well as beneficial for overall health, as long as it doesn’t increase your appetite and make you eat more.

Thanks Vivalas – popcorn and diet coke are already faves so that’s a massive help!

So much good advice on here 🙂

and to you as well Lillythepink!

    Hi Annie,

    Congrats on your good start.
I managed to loose about 1,5 st over the last months. After I saw the Horizon documentary on the iPlayer I decided to do a fast day once in a while, but now I’m really into 5:2 and things progress. My BMI is at 45, so I have still a long way to go.

As a motivation I got the WeightDrop app, which calculates the days to target weight based on the data entered: about 1700 days to go, but that’s OK.

While the first fasting days were really hard, I kind of got used to it. Today’s a fasting day and I’m not that terribly hungry. Interestingly I am not able to eat the large portions I used to.

What really helped me with my nutrition in general was the discovery that carbs during the day make me hungry. I started eating low carb during the day and have pasta & co only sometimes in the evening. Works out fine.

I don’t have regular fasting days, especially as I’m often on business trips. Then fasting is perfect for me, because I don’t have to worry where to get the right food.

    Wish you all the best
    Debby

    Hi Franfit,

It’s a good thing to know the BMR/TDEE. I had the chance to get an exact measurement of my BMR (the calculator doesn’t work for real obese people like me) and I try to stay at about the 1800 calories of my BMR on the non-fasting days. My nutritionist is quite happy with that approach.

    All the best
    Debby

    Hi all,

Wow – everyone’s doing really well! I’ve done 3 fasting days now, and lost 4.5lbs, which I’m really pleased with. What I’m struggling with is trying to eat less rubbish on my non fasting days when I’m at work. I went a bit mad at work yesterday and ate loads of chocolate and biscuits. I don’t want to ruin the effects of the fasting days by eating too much on the other days, but equally I don’t want to feel that I’m ‘on a diet’.

I think franfit’s idea of calculating your target weight calories and trying to adjust to those is a great idea, but I’ve got so much to lose that I don’t want to cut down so much so soon. I think I’ll work out an interim target and aim for the calorie count I’ll need then, and reduce it as I get closer to it … if that makes any sense!

I’m using My Fitness Pal, which is really helpful. It suggests that I stick to 2070 calories daily in order to lose 1lb a week, and recalculates the amount every time you record a weight loss, so if I try to stick to around that figure on my non-fasting days I should be ok, without rigidly counting calories, which will just make me want to eat chocolate! 😉 It’s the normal daily consumption for a normal-sized bloke, so a tall woman should manage it without too much difficulty!!!

Really good luck to Lilasophia, Lillythepink and Nymphenburg! Hope all goes well for all of us this week! My next fasting day is Monday, although I’m skipping breakfast today as we had a big takeaway last night and I’m still full!

Have a great weekend everyone. 🙂

Hope it’s still going well for you. I’ve registered on this site now and will fast when two suitable days come up. I’m 54 and going through menopause. Weight piling on!

    Hi,

I have a lot of weight to lose, but I am back on track with 5:2ing, and confident all the weight will come off.

I have Dr. Mosley’s/Mimi Spencer’s Fast Diet and read it from cover to cover. Next month Mimi Spencer’s Fast Beach Diet comes out in the United States, and I’ve ordered it from amazon. Right now I’m doing 5:2, but am interested in maybe throwing in a 4:3 here and there, and from what I understand, the new book covers this.

    Hi all,

just checking in after nearly 4 weeks on 5:2. I’ve lost 9lbs, which I’m really pleased with, and I’m fitting into clothes that haven’t fitted comfortably for a long time!

I’m fasting on Mondays and Fridays now, as this fits in best with my work and home life. I have to say, at the moment, I’m finding it really good! I’m sure there will be some struggles ahead, but I intend to do this long-term, so I’m sure they’ll get ironed out in the long run!

    How is everyone else doing?

    Annie xx 🙂

Congratulations, annie68! I found 5:2 very do-able, as well, and lost 40 pounds in 40 weeks (as you get smaller, the weight loss tends to slow down a bit). A few days have been difficult, but, it’s only two days a week — as a friend of mine said, “I can do anything if it’s only two days a week.” As someone who gets bored and restless doing the same thing over and over again, I found I needed to try new recipes or find other ways to mix things up every so often. And I gradually increased my walking to an average of 10,000 steps per day. Now I’m starting the adventure of maintenance. It sounds like it’s only a matter of time until you get there, too 🙂

annie68 that’s awesome news! I’ve lost 2lbs in 2 weeks and fast on Mondays and Wednesdays. It’s hard but rewarding work! I think I must go over the 500 cals though but still seem to be losing which is excellent!

Here’s to a great summer wardrobe!

    LS x

PS. Maybe tomorrow’s kids won’t have our issues…
