  • Hi just reading up on the 5:2 diet and must admit this diet really appeals to me. Please could someone explain the fast days to me and on the other 5 days could you stick to 1500 calories even if they recommend 2000?
    Thank you in advance

Hopefully, you have calculated your BMR and TDEE.

The TDEE is the number of calories needed to maintain your weight. You are welcome to eat less than that amount.

The trouble with this eating plan is it is not complicated.

Pick 2 days to fast. During that 24 hour day, eat only 500 calories. Pick any time and any food to eat. Drink LOTS of water.

Other 7 days are non fast days. During each 24 hour day eat as you normally do. If you want, count calories to be sure you are under the TDEE. Drink LOTS of water.

This forum is a means for those following this plan to offer suggestions on what works for them. Each person develops different strategies for themselves. I read what is here and follow what I think will work.

Thanks Amy, seen this on Holland and Barrett says to have on the 5:2 diet… Do you take this? http://m.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/product_detail.asp?pid=5697&prodid=4380

You are welcome to eat what you want.

I generally don’t waste my calories on something like this. Syrup is consumed in conjunction with another food — like pancakes.

These add up to too many calories for me.

There are no special foods to eat. I go for preparing my own meals from scratch and include lots of vegetables.

It is interesting how difficult it is to get information about this tree syrup. Everyone sells it as natural and healthy, nobody wants to tell us what it is. That alone is a reason to be sceptical.

However, I eventually found what I was looking for and my suspicion about it are confirmed. “Syrup” is the giveaway. That stuff is a mix of maple and palm tree sap, basically a “totally healthy because natural” sugar concoction high in fructose.
Holland and Barretts is doing what any successful retailer will do: trying to sell you stuff you don’t need.

I certainly would not use any high carbohydrate supplement on a fast day, but if you do remember to add the calories to your total.

I agree it is hard to actually know what it the description is very limited. think I will stay clear just sounds good the way they describe it as a cleanser/detox. Thank you 🙂

    Hi and welcome:

Here are some tips that might help: http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/warnings-to-newbies/

    Good Luck!

“Detox” diets are based on the suggestion that our bodies cannot get rid of certain “toxins”. When you ask the believers they can never name any toxin that our bodies cannot dispose off on its own but the detox diet will.
And if you insist on just a single such toxin, the discussion quickly descends to arguments such as “you are a doctor/nurse/scientifically trained/insist of traditional studies, therefore we cannot explain to you how it works”. Been there, done it, got several t-shirts but not ever the name of a single toxin these diets shift and our natural body doesn’t.
These diets are cabbage soup wrapped in pseudoscience.

Good day folks, Calgary here. Lots of encouraging chat, thanks for that.
My wife & I have followed the 5:2 plan and it seems, OK. No great surprises either way. No ‘WOW!’ results after 5 weeks.
If anyone wants a WOW result: If I can make a suggestion: Give Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s book, Fasting & Eating For Health, a try; (this is NOT a sale mail), it is a short, well written book about ‘true’ fasting, (water only), w/ case studies, tips, the science, etc.
Our history: the wife & I each tried the JF ‘true’ fast for 56 & 52 hours, respectively . Results were as predicted in the JF book. I had aches that I had never experienced before on the second day, these aches accompanied me thru the night and just could not sleep or, get comfy so, I finally consumed a coffee. These aches vanished as soon as I broke the fast with a great cup of coffee, (BTW, which was recommended against; I should have been easier on my G.I. system after the 52 hr fast, coffee went thru like a rocket). The aches, which are unusual for most people are an indication that one really needs the fast to detox oneself.
My wife: her results were quite amazing; she had one coin-sized very dense cyst/benign growth thing develop in her upper thigh about two years ago; it had completely vanished by the end of her fast. This result is also a prediction of the JF book.
We are both going to undergo the true fast again after we have lived a more nutritious diet and active lifestyle, (to make sure we are more resilient during the fast).
Final note: the best results are supposed to be noticed between 7 and 14 days with 14 days being the goal, every 5 to 10 years. Just live an active, nutritious lifestyle the rest of the time.
ALL THE BEST TO ALL OF YOU, Fred & Donna from Calgary, Canada. We would be excited to hear the results of others who try the JF fast. Bye

I am mega giddy started the gym on Saturday been every day and started 5:2 on Monday did my fasting yesterday, 2nd day in and weighed myself at the gym 10lbs lighter… Can’t believe it, the combination of the gym and 5:2 is working wonders! Very happy girl right now 🙂

    That is great!

I want to insert a bit of reality — most of that weight lost was water weight. You will not keep up that pace.

No but a great kick start, as long as i loose a lb a week I’m going to be happy.

I agree, it is a great kickstart and encourages you to continue.

The first weight loss is usually the best.
