  • Hello.

Having been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes around 2 years ago I embarked on medication and a lifestyle change mainly to loose weight. Recently that weight change came to a halt and at the same time my blood sugar levels have risen.I am now on further medication pending the usual blood test in about 6 weeks time.
I enquired with Diabetes Uk and my practise diabetic Nurse who didn’t seem to think it was a problem but urged caution.
I am now in my second week 4 fasts and I find it very easy as fasting in my religion is common.I am wondering if there is any further info for diabetics or good advice from similar diabetic people.
    Thanks.

    Hi Madmanc

You might have already seen these; but I found this series of lectures very interesting and food for thought re diabetes.

    Hi Stone,

Thanks for your reply. I have spent the last two hours watching the first of the lectures.
I am very confused by the theories Dr Fung puts out as in the first one he says Dieting and exercise and diets like the 5-2 in the long term do not work.(Is that how you see it or am I misreading it)

I then went onto another lecture on the subject of dealing with Diabetes the natural way were he extolls the virtues of Intermittent fasting as opposed to drugs which is the way my GP has sent me. If this lecture is true the 5-2 is the way forward as the scenario described with medication looks bleak.

    How Do you see it.?

My sister was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a couple of years ago and, worryingly, was not responding enough to high doses of medication. Last year she began 5:2, against the advice of her nurse practitioner who said diabetics should never fast. However, she disregarded the advice and now is TOTALLY IN REMISSION!! Her nurse/doctor are amazed, and recently she was taken off all meds. So there you have it!
My sister now keeps her weight in check, fasting twice a week as usual. Fasting has become a normal part of her life, as it has mine.

I read an interview with a man in America (may have been through Mailonline) where he did exactly the same thing.

He fasted his way to “losing” the diabetic tag.

He didn’t do 5:2 but a very low calorie diet (under 1,000 per day and as a man, that was half the recommended allowance) for however many months and basically “starved” it out of himself

I can’t remember when it was but remember thinking oh that sounds interesting but I don’t know if I would have that willpower.

So Suze – good on your sister.
