  • I have tried 5.2 before working on the basis of 500 a day on my fast days and 2000 on ‘normal’ days.
I have just properly worked out my TDEE and realised that on fast days I should only be on 400 and normal days of 1600. This means I was overeating by 2200 kcal each week. No wonder it wasn’t working for me.

    Onwards and downwards.

Well done eljay & good luck now that you’ve figured out where you were going wrong.

If you do find that 400 calories is too low for you though, don’t be afraid to have a few more calories (right up to 500 if you want) on your fastdays. It really doesn’t make much difference to your weekly calorie deficit number and if it makes fastdays more manageable for you then it’s worth it. If you want to ‘make up’ for it you can always drop a few calories under your planned non-fastday intake to even things out.

    Best wishes – TJ

Good for you! I am using a fitbit one activity tracker which allowed me to calculate my average TDEE much more accurately as it really depends on your activity level. The online calculators are just approximations. The fitbit is as well, albeit a bit better than the calculator.
I am planing of getting an activity tracker that also measures your heart rate.
Anyhow, getting a good idea of your real TDEE is useful, particularly when it comes to maintenance.
    Stef.
