  • I am your typical yo-yo dieter and have been all my life. At the moment I am the heaviest I have been for years and am SO uncomfortable and know my blood tests results will be shocking. I know I lose weight really well on a low carb diet so had just started The New Atkins Plan when my niece in the UK sent me (in Australia) the Fast Food book and the Fast Diet book. Can I do Atkins on my non fast days and 500 cals on my fast days? Am I able to do my fast days on different days each week to fit in with my lifestyle? I have recently retired, love to cook and entertain. My exercise is limited…I play golf but due to osteoarthritis use a motorised buggy. I used to swim but can’t seem to get the balance to do my strokes which are also limited due to neck, back and hip issues. I hope this can work for me as I desperately need to lose weight and avoid the consequences of being obese.

Hello Strawplash and welcome to the forums

very glad you want to do 5.2 as this has to be the best way of eating for life, to loose weight, maintain and generally stay healthy!
re the atkins, I am not familiar with it so I cant really advise but I think it would be best to just do the 5.2 as I am not sure it’ll work along another diet?
hopefully others will be along to advise you better on it 🙂

yes you can fast any days you like with 5.2, you can change them too when you need to, that’s the beauty of 5.2, you fit YOUR life around it!
do not worry too much about the exercise, as it will not impact on your weight loss..

please let us know how you get on, look around this forum for all sorts of help and guidance re medical conditions.

good luck, and happy fasting! 🙂

    Hi Strawplash,

Welcome to the club! I know a wee bit about Atkins and I see no reason why you shouldn’t continue with it on your non-fast days. BUT if you read the two Fast Diet books and try out some of the recipes (there are some great ones BTW) you may find that 5:2 allows you to be a bit less stringent with yourself.

I agree 100% with what Angie – hi there, Angie – says about how to arrange your fast days. The great thing about this way of eating is that there are no “ought tos” or “shouldn’ts”. You are in the driving seat and you are free to find what works best for you.

    hi Herma!!

how are you doing? when will you pop in at the gallery lol? hope all is well with you, have a lovely sunday 🙂 xx

I’m fine, Angie. I don’t suppose I’ll make it to Tate Britain in the next few weeks as the day job has taken over – I’m actually at my desk now, working on a large project. Such is the life of a freelancer, nothing for weeks and then you have to work a 7-day week. I don’t mind, though. Working weekends means I can skive off guilt-free on weekdays.

5:2-wise, 4 weeks into my second year, I appear to have lost an additional kilo that so far (fingers crossed!) has not come back since a week ago. That brings me to the princely sum of 7 kilos lost since this February last year with another 10, or better still 15, to go.

Remind me, which days are you at Tate Britain?

    Hey that’s great Herma!!

sorry you are working though…the day is nearly over though 🙂

I work Fridays and weekends, so very part time lol, but really the commute was just too much after years of it 🙁

I don’t know if you are a fan of sculptures but we have a new exhibition of Richard Deacon…

have a good sunday 🙂 xx

    Hi Strawplash

I see no reason not to combine fasting with a low carb Atkins style diet. Are you planning to do Atkins induction phase? If I did this I think I would not start 5:2 until I had moved on to the next stage as I believe it is quite demanding by itself.

    All the best

    Barbara

Thank you all for your replies. Sorry it has taken me SO long to reply but I had to ask how to do that 1st!!
Well, Day 1 over…a Fast Day and absolutely NO PROBLEM. I made a huge pot of ratatouille last night which I love so had that for breakfast with a little cheese and a slice of ham. The rest I froze in portions. Then nothing till tonight when I had a thin pork steak, steamed veges, a Zero and a cup of coffee. I asked my Dr about doing the 5:2 and also Atkins and she said “Go for it”!!!

    Hi Strawplash,

I see you’ve got off to an excellent start. Well done. I suspect you aren’t going to have too many problems with 5:2. And it’s great that you have got a doc who knows about and is in favour of the Fast Diet. I also love ratatouille but I’m not sure whether I could handle it for breakfast.

BTW, I see you call yourself “elderly”. From your profile I would say no more than middle-aged. If you’re elderly, I’m antedeluvian!

    Hi Angie,

I’ve just had a peep at some of Richard Deacon’s sculptures and certainly like the look of them – except one. I shall have to hurry, eyes averted, past the thing that resembles a ginormous basketwork snake – even bigger than the one by the Whistler that I told you about.

Maybe later this month I can pop in on a Friday or weekend. For the moment not only have I a lot of work – two projects now on the go – but my MA dissertation supervisor has been in touch and wants to see something in writing by Thursday 13th. I love it all really, but there are days when I wish I was stacking shelves in Sainsbury’s (only kidding!)

    xx
