  • Hi
1st post so please be gentle with me

just started this 5 and 2 diet managed two fasts so far…the second one was alot harder then the first ( maybe its my poor planning) any way here are my 2 questions that i would like an answer if possible

A:I work night and was wondering the best way forward with this diet any tips e.t.c

B:After i have had my last bit of food, can i start my fast from say 5 mins after i have eaten or do you allow time for the food to be digested and then start your 24 hr fast ?

You have my sympathies mr.p I worked 2 nights a week for a while and could easily eat 6 meals over each of those 2 24 hours!
I think your danger time is when you finish your last night and have days off (if you are full time night worker) so planning is essential.
Look around the forum for loads of tips about food, exercise etc – there is a wealth of knowledge here. Look at HOW and FAQ at the top of each page on the forum for answers to a lot of question.

Measure yourself and find your TDEE
    http://thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-calories-on-a-non-fast-day/
Starting out I think 600cals for your fast day and somewhere between your BMR and TDEE should soon see any unwanted pounds disappearing 🙂
You should recalculate as you lose weight.

As for when your 24 hours start – that is a tough question.
I normally have a meal about 6pm then sometimes some fruit in the evening then go to bed and fast from then until 6pm when I have my 400cals then nothing until late morning the following day. So I get approx a 19 hour fast – 400 cals – then a 10 hour fast. We all do it differently I suspect, look at FAQ for help and a better explanation.

Good luck – use the forum for inspiration and a way of using an hour on your fast day to stop you thinking of food!

I think it’s difficult, not knowing your schedule, to say what might work for you but you should probably consider ‘days’ for the purposes of the diet as from when you go to bed (to sleep) until the next time you go to bed (to sleep).

That is the basic rule that most of us work to. Some people just do 24 hour days (2pm-2pm say) but for most of us it’s the last thing we ate before going to bed last night until whenever we have ‘breakfast’ tomorrow (usually more like 36 hours).

Once you’ve figured out what your ‘day’ is then you just need to figure out how best to distribute your 600 calories throughout it. Noone can decide that for you, it’s very personal and you may find it quickly evolves as you get used to dealing with ‘hunger’ pangs. Be prepared to be flexible and experiment, don’t worry if you ‘fail’ a fastday by not strictly sticking to your 600 once or twice while you’re experimenting and drink LOADS of water.

    Good luck.

    Many thanks for your replies

I work nights and have done for most of my working life……..I’m 55 now
only doing it for the ££££££ I have never managed to get my sleep patterns rightas of now I just stick to a 24 hr fast its hard enough doing a night shift as it is and I think 36 hrs is to hardcore for me at the moment.

Oh lindyw tahnks for the link to my tdee …..I thought I could eat 2000 cals or more but it appears not hahaha

right thats its back to work for me.
