  • I joined the movement on Saturday, driven by a gain of two kilos during the Christmas period, which, on top of the three that had crept up on me over the past few years, left me feeling very podgy indeed. I’m 52, my waist once measured 63cm but now measures 70cm, and for most of my adult life I’ve weighed between 56 and 58 kilos – those are my goals, right there! I’d been calorie restricting (and lapsing horribly and frequently) since mid January. A week ago I’d read a local journalist’s column on his experience with this way of eating and thought, why not? I’d planned to start today (a southern hemisphere Monday) but was so excited I started two days early.

The first fast day went very well. Breakfast was an extraordinarily filling frittata of egg, light cottage cheese and spinach (baked in a muffin tray) accompanied by roasted tomatoes. Perhaps I’m not used to the double dose of protein but it stuck to the ribs all day. Dinner was ratatouille, a grilled portobello mushroom,a spot of quinoa and a handful of green beans. Strangely enough the only hunger pangs I felt all day came a couple of hours after this meal. I went for a 15k walk, and drank lots of black tea, green tea and herbal tea. It all seemed too easy.

Come Sunday morning I prepared my self a hearty breakfast – a few slices of dry fried black pudding, spinach, roasted tomatoes (yes, there’s a theme) and two slices of whole grain toast. I managed half of it and went for another walk – 7.5k. Someone else has described feeling hungover which is exactly how I felt after I’d eaten – a bit windy,a bit headachey. This eased off during the walk. I’d planned to stop for a treat at a French bakery – this was a feed day after all – but nothing there appealed. It all looked too big, too much so I ended up at another café sipping more green tea and nibbling on a side salad! Is the retraining effect of fasting kicking in early? How fabulous if that’s so!

And the weight? 61.5k on Friday, 60.1k today. I’m sure it’s too good to be true but it’s very motivating!

    Best wishes to you all

And here is a weight loss pattern you might experience along the way: http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/really-no-weight-loss/

    Good Luck!

Thanks for that Simcoeluv. I particularly appreciate your point on the trousers! 🙂

Hi Belle Etoile and welcome to the forum

You are doing very well so all i can say is keep it up, just wondering, are you in France? Just asking because of your nickname and also you mentioned a french bakery lol .. I am french born but been in the uk over 30 years now, though my family is still there!

Good luck!! And keep posting 🙂

    Coucou Angie!

No, I’m not in France (alas) but in Wellington, New Zealand, where I study French and where there are some pretty good boulangeries. What I really wanted yesterday was a macaron or a florentine – something small and elegant and not too damaging…

I’ve holidayed in Paris, Burgundy and Brittany, toured the Pays Basque, the Tarn and parts of Provence… I need to spend more time in Paris: I always return from my visits weighing 55k!

This is a lovely forum: the level of support is remarkable and it’s easy to see that many users have done their research and done it well. And, even better, are willing to share that with others.

Fourth day as a 5:2-er and second fast day… perhaps a little sooner than optimal but I have a cocktail reception tomorrow evening, an evening class on Thursday and Friday evening is usually, well you know, Friday evening… end of the week, bar snacks, a drink or two or three. Breakfast, at 10 am, was another little frittata with tomatoes. I’ve just eaten dinner – diced roasted chicken breast over a salad of carrot and zucchini ribbons and sliced mushrooms dressed with soy, lime juice and a few drops of sesame oil, all followed by some diced nectarine. I was ravenous and verging on the slightly cranky so wolfed it down…

I estimate the day’s total at 555,a bit higher than one would like, but average daily calorie consumption since 1 February is a little below the magic T number.

I walked again – have done every day – and drank black tea, herb tea and water flavoured with lemon slices. All in all, pretty good really.

I am looking forward to breakfast tomorrow…

    hi there Belle Etoile!!

not sure what time zone you are in, I guess you are well ahead of us here in the UK lol!!

I love the smell of gorgeous warm freshly baked bread and cakes the second you walk into a boulangerie 🙂 its my childhood best memory !!

hope you have a lovely breakfast in the morning 🙂 x

Into second week of of 5:2 and lost 2.5 lbs last week. Finding this week slightly harder, but will keep going regardless!!!

Hi Graliz, that’s a great first week, well done! Is it the fast days themselves you’re finding difficult this week or the day after? I felt like absolute rubbish for most of today: sluggish, moody… and then the sun came out 🙂

    Hey Angie

That’s such a lovely, warm, safe memory – I was instantly transported! Some smells do that – for me it’s the reek of malt vinegar, which takes me back to childhood beach holidays and breakfasts of shellfish gathered the day before, and the scent of tomato leaves – truly the essence of summer.

So where in France did you grow up? And is it appropriate to ask about the regional specialties?

(And I’m twelve hours ahead of you UK lot. I realised after posting that there was potential for confusion here.)

    Bises

hi again Belle Etoile! ( just love this hehe)

I grew up in the north of Paris, kind of the outskirts if you like, very urban grrr

My dad still lives there and sister and brother have moved to other regions, I don’t think there isn’t any harm about asking regional specialities lol!!

I fasted yesterday and boy did I struggle a bit in the afternoon…. it was a case of mind over matter, but I did it and this morning I feel good 🙂

how is it going for you? how’s the weather where you are? I guess you might have seen how horrendous its been in parts of the UK, all that flooding, when is it going to end!
its sunny at the moment here, I am in Kent in the south east of England… but very chilly!

take care and have a fab day, bisous!! xx

    Coucou Angie !

So far so good, thank you. Another kilo gone by this morning, which was most pleasing. Based on previous experience, I could very probably have achieved similar results had I been properly disciplined about calorie limits and exercise. But I wasn’t, and hadn’t been for two or three years … with predictable results. So this is just great. I like that this approach mkes implementing the advice to compensate for overdoing things by cutting back the back next day so easy.

The one real difficulty so far is insomnia on night of the fast day itself and the following night.

And you? How long has this been your WOL? (I think that’s a much happier acronym than WOE.:) )

And you asked about the weather. I’m thinking of complaining to the management. It’s supposed to be summer and indeed was today – after three days of wintry temperatures and heavy rain. Tomorrow may well be another story!

    Biz

    Morning Belle Etoile!!

wow girl, 1 kilo!!!!!!!!!!!! am jealous lol, but well done, fab fab fab!!!
I have been on this WOL since July last year, I am so used to it now that I don’t know how I managed without it before 🙂
I haven’t weighed myself since early January, I was the same as before so I am in a plateau mode grrrr, staying away from those scales till I feel ready hehe!!

fasting tomorrow, I will be at work so its easier for me…

have a lovely day!! biz 🙂
