  • I am on my first fast day today, looking for tips to deal with hunger, and ideas for meals etc!

Hiya it’s my first day too 🙂
Will be interested to hear what people say

Hi! It’s my second fast day, so far I’m doing ok. I generally don’t really eat breakfast, so I skip that on fast days, and instead of my 3-4 milkcoffees till noon I have 2-3 black coffees. At lunch I drink a homemade green smoothie (under 200 cal) an save 300 cals for supper. Today I will eat some pumpernickel (rye bread?) with smoked salmon and cottage cheese. Am already looking forward to it.

I usually fast for 5 days maybe once a year and I liked the experience. But it’s really hard to plan for a week, where they are no lunches or suppers or other events. plus I would really like to loose 5kg (maybe 7?) and this 5:2 system seems to be more permanent (I think I will change to a 6:1 once I (hopefully) reach my goal). What I absolutely love about this, is that the day after the fast you can already eat again, it passes really fast.

Hi it’s my first day too! Started fasting yesterday at 6:30pm after my mums Sunday lunch . Been up since 6am this morning and had a black coffee for breakfast then a cup of bovril for dinner. I’ve now got 570kcals left for supper which will prob be a ready meal with mixed veg then I will break my fast tomorrow morning at 6:30am with some fresh orange juice! Been told it’s best to start light when breaking the fast hence the saying “breakfast”. Any help, hints and tips will be greatly appreciated. Matt! :-)..

After my first fast day I just started as usual… I had 2 milkcoffees in the first hour after gettting up. I really didn’t feel hungrier than normal, so it’s best to no overeat just because you think you have to catch up. Orange Juice sounds great!

What’s bovril (I’m swiss and don’t know it)? And how are you feeling now?

    Hi Matt and welcome:

Here is most of the information you will need to be successful with 5:2: https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/the-basics-for-newbies-your-questions-answered/

    Good Luck!

Hi this is my first day too but not sure what to eat had porridge for breakfast supper at 7 .
Theese r my results Your BMI is: 23.3Your BMR is: 5883 kJ / 1406 caloriesYour TDEE is: 7059 kJ / 1687 calories
Can some one tell me how many calories I should have on non fast days thanks

Hi Frankie, the TDEE is your limit for the non fast days… If you count calories on those.

Thanx for the link, you can eat upto your TDEE on non fast days frankie! I’m going to stay under that only because mine is 2800 kcals for non fast days so I should surely be able to go down to 2500kcals on non fast days. I’m 24 hrs into my first 36hr fast so tea time soon! I really can’t Believe how controlled I was with food and how much I actually think about it! Lol!! Good luck everyone!

    Hi all:

Remember, the TDEE number you get from a calculator is only an estimate. That is why many use their goal weight when first calculating their TDEEs so they are sure they get a workable number and start to get used to how little they will have to eat to maintain their weight once they reach their goal.

    Good Luck!

Hi -this is my first day -have been trying to cut down for last 2weeks and husband trying too so not alone. We’ve managed to lose 5 or 6lbs each but reckon 5- 2 could be the answer. Was shocked to see how much I should really be eating have obviously been overloading for years -does it take long to get used to the fast days -any advice appreciated

    Hi Alice

I only had 2 fast days so far, but am (more or less) experienced in fasting. there are some moments during the day (for me above all in the evening, after supper, but I think that’s individual) where you really feel hungry. you have to get used to them and ignore them. I just go to bed a bit earlier than normal. The rest feels pretty easy to me, once you learn that you can function totally normal during this day. Best advice: keep busy! You are not going to faint or anything. I even went jogging yesterday noon and it was not even harder than normal.

Hello, I did my first Fast Day yesterday – as lots of others by the look. I have been slow to pick up on this lifestyle and am really amazed how many health benefits there are. Very excited about what I can lose too of course – I need to lose quite a lot. I found yesterday quite easy, the only slip I had was a couple of coffee’s with milk – I really can’t drink it or tea without. I had lots of water too though. I’m planning to do 3 fast days this week as a kick start – Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Unfortunately though I didn’t experience the really good night’s sleep after, in fact I was awake for 2 hours with discomfort in my throat / gullet. Never had it before but I am sure not related to the ‘diet’.

After two fast days and eating normally yesterday (although without my normal amount of chocolate in the evening) I weighed myself today and have lost a pound, yay!!! The cool thing about this 5:2 is, that I enjoy eating a lot more and to it more consciously. I try to work out more and lead a healthier lifestyle in general, but still want to be able to eat and drink with my husband and with friends.

Does somebody have expierence with not always staying on the same weekdays for fasting? I just choose my fastdays as I go, so last week Thursday, this week Monday and Friday, next week either sunday and wednesday or wednesday and thursday (although two days in a row might be hard…). Maybe in the way of getting a habit this is not the perfect approach, but right now I don’t really have a choice, I just use the gaps in my calendar.

I’m on my second day of fasting today, did my first on Monday, day off yesterday (though I wasn’t very well – has anyone else experienced this?) I woke up feeling fine again this morning though so decided to carry on as planned. Beck100 – I don’t think it is just you who likes to snack in the evenings, before starting the 5:2 I had switched to eating an orange in the evening instead of crisps / chocolate. It does help I suppose that I love oranges.. I’m only on my first week of 5:2 so I can’t comment on switching fast days through the week but from what I understand that is one of the beauties of this regime, the flexibility. It shouldn’t matter and we can choose what suits us. I am trying to kick start with 4:3 in my first week but I have my daughter’s Hen weekend in less than a month and her wedding in 4 months so I want to lose quite a bit quickly. I have also had a complete life change recently and after a 26 year marriage I am now quite unexpectedly (almost) divorced, back living with my parents and obviously single. I want to be the best I can be – I love the quote ‘It is never too late to be what you might have been’ – George Eliot. That is my current mantra!

Adjusting fast days or feed days to suit you is a great part of 5:2 it doesn’t matter which 5 and it doesn’t matter which 2 as long as you do them both.

5:2 isn’t fast. You can speed it up a bit by going 4:3 and going to zero caloric intake on fast days but honestly it’s still not “fast” weight loss. If you do fasting from evening of one day, all through the second and into the evening of the third ie. Stop eating sunday after supper, don’t eat all of monday, sleep, wakeup tuesday and don’t eat until supper time. Fasting 46-47 hours twice a week on zero calories you can lose up to 3 lbs per week. Still not “fast”.

5:2 isn’t “fast” it doesn’t cost a bunch but it does work slowly and steadily. If you fast two days a week and stay within your TDEE on the other 5 days you will lose weight.

Calculate your TDEE for your goal weight not what you weigh now but what you want to weigh when you will go to maintenance you will drop weight quicker as you are restricting calories further.

You can go to a water only fast of 10 days, during which you will probably lose in excess of 10 pounds. But you can gain 8 pounds of it back in 5 days as it is water weight. 10 day water fasting is not to be undertaken lightly. I don’t recommend it to anyone. I’ve not as yet achieved it myself (I always break early I’m not sure why but when I don’t feel good about it I will break the fast) it’s taking practice and time for me. (I’m just a chicken at heart I think)

It’s all about the fast. Enjoy your journey on 5:2 you will learn a lot about yourself.

Dear meon-dweller, i’m sorry to hear about the dramatic changes in your life. that sure gets one out of the comfort zone. but you seem to see it as a chance for another life and another you, i think this is great and you are absolutely right! but it’s not all about the weight, although i understand the urges to change ones appearance in order to show this new person you are. so please, don’t stress yourself too much with fast weightloss. what about a new haircut or colour, some new clothes or a new lipstick… whatever makes you feel good! you are going to loose the weight anyway 🙂

Beck100, we usually do set fast days Mondays & Thursdays, however, we sometimes have other things crop up so we swap the days around to suit our lifestyle. We say Sunday is the first day of the week and we have to fit two days in from Sunday to Saturday. My hubby & I have both been living the 5:2 diet since April last year and managed to lose heap 13 & 12 kilo’s each, I’ve gone from a size 16 to a 10 in that time. I get hungry at times on fast days, but try and just drink lots of water or white tea (no milk) or herbal tea. I’m not a huge fan of green tea but will occasionally have it. I try and do things to distract me from the hunger, which happens at times on fast day and it usually goes away eventually. I read a book, answer some emails etc. We are both 60 later this year and its been the most positive thing we could have done for ourselves and our health.
Good luck with your diet all you first timers, its really well worth it.

Beck100, I am new to this lifestyle. I vary my fast day, depending on my activities of the week. I turned 60 in December, a month after i broke my foot. I gained a few pounds because of inactivity and generally “feeling sorry for myself” eating. While I do get hungry, I find I feel empowered by rising above it!

Hi VictoriaEli and K-Lo, thanks for your feedback. K-Lo, I hope 5:2 helps you over this phase of inactivity, so when your foot is better you will be lighter and ready to jump in again! Are you looking to loose more weight than what you weighed when you broke your foot? Or just those few pounds? Hope all goes well!

Seeing as the person, who started this thread, seems no longer active I started my own. Why don’t you join me there?

Beck100, I can’t blame it all on my foot! Most of it is my mouth. I am looking to lose a total of 10 -12 pounds. That’s two size for me.

So our goal is similar! 😊

I must admit, I am looking for some exercise guidance ..but nothing on diet nor this fasting thing . I may be a complete wreck , for all I know..Diabetes, hypertension, on and on ..A PM to keep me alive .. And I may be the only American here .. but .. we are all people..
Exercising on the Giant brand bike .
120 seconds, 1 mile, 10 calories ..IMO, not so good ..not when I hit 17 calories and 190 seconds last month .
    Adrian

    more to come, maybe ..

    Hi old:

As you have noticed, you do not exercise to burn a lot of calories.

My guidance is simple – find an exercise you both like and can do without injuring yourself and do it. Exercise is the single most beneficial thing you can do for your health (unless you smoke – then quitting is number one).

I prefer walking in nice places.

    Good Luck!

    Hey, old, I’m an American!

Hello Old, exercise does help shift excess weight, build muscle and has a feel good factor. Choose an exercise you like, start off slowly and make it a daily habit. Soon it becomes a habit and the amount you do will increase as you feel so good afterwards Try not to worry about the lack of calories burned, the more you become able to do, the more calories you will burn off… but sensible eating goes hand in hand with exercise.
    Good luck.

    Hiya All,
I have to be very honest and admit I don’t do much in the way of purposeful exercise. I was doing Pilates once a week but that’s closed up for a while.
I do exercise like gardening, parking the car as possible from the shop doors, or go for a long walk on our foreshore after a nice cup of coffee. I’m always busy at home so that helps I guess doing the chores.
Hoping to get back into swimming again in the near future. But the weight just came off me really quickly as it did with my husband by just following the Fast Diet twice a week.
