  • Yes, I have to disagree with Jayney also!

‘Feeling poorly’ in England does not mean you have compromised nerve endings/ touch/ sensations in your fingers.

If you follow that line of thought then I’m going to run a mile next time someone tells me they are feeling sick… 🙂

    ;-)) ;-)) very funny… “compromised nerve endings”

Fast, I don’t know how to show irony in a post. So hope my last post was taken as ironic, and very supportive. Bay 🙂

Hehehe, you guys crack me up. I’m in bed chortling out loud. OH will think I’ve run mad. Very helpful for a convalescent to laugh. Bay 😉

Show ironing in a post Bay? 😉

Absolutely, Bay, no worries. I only wish my influence were greater – in fact it usually works in negative ratio to how hard I try. But I picked up your intent! Hope you feel better soon x

Lichtle – love your white lilies! Totally un-malicious and unintentional, and certainly less insensitive than the dear soul who conned her way into the ITU when DH was there 15 years ago after his ‘no-one-can-understand-even-now-how-he’s-still-here’ road accident, and left the ‘gift’ of a book of unfunny jokes about – you’ve guessed – road accidents.

Out of interests, what is/was your first language? I’d never have guessed from your posts that it’s not English.

    Hi Lichtle,

There seems to be a misunderstanding. I’m not an industrial designer, I’m an Instructional Designer. I design training materials, courses, instructor guides, participant guides, job aids, and eLearning simulations and demonstrations. I hope that makes sense.

I do low-flying aerial work (dancing on trapeze, sling, and ropes) as a form of self-expression thrice weekly after my strength training at the gym to warm up for it. The last time I was paid for it was about 12 years ago. Sorry if I was unclear, but you certainly think I’m more adventure-seeking than I am. I hope that’s not disappointing ;-).

Interesting to hear about the poorly debate as well. I got that info from a grammarian here in the States. I’m sure that’s one of the many differences between here and the mother country. 😉

Jaynie, I imagined the word you were describing was “pawly” 😉

    Hi All,
Bayleafoz, where are you going in Europe for your holiday? We are going to Thailand and Cambodia -cant wait to get out of cold Melbourne!! 🙂
I did go for that walk yesterday- very proud as usually what I intend doesn’t actually happen

Well done. How about another walk today Judy? I’ve just come back from mine. Warms me up on a fast day. Unlike our UK mates, we need to do brisk walks in winter as summer can be too hot.
Your trip sounds great. Plenty of opportunities to walk, I hope. P 🙂

    Hi P,

We do brisk walks in winter too – to stop hypothermia setting in!

    Ha!

Anyone catch Michael Moseley on TV last night? Brief discussion re BMI which perfectly reiterated ours from last week. Conclusion : best way to stay fit = lose belly fat and keep exercising!

I lost a post last night. I loved P’s funny word play on “poorly”;-))

@jayney no reason to apologise, the misunderstanding was on my side. I had never heard of an instructional designer but it seems you do similar job to me as I do all the graphic design requirement for our company from brochures, packaging, technical data sheets, newsletters, adverts.. etc

@fast, my first language is German. Just returned from 10 days visiting family in the Black Forest down south.

I am fasting today and about to go for my lunch time walk.

Hi all, I had a good fast day yesterday. I won’t be able to go for a walk today as I have my granddaughter every Friday. She’s 2.5 yrs old and although I can put her in a stroller- even better exercise:) the risk of rain with her is too high today. It’s actually pouring down now. I plan on going for a walk tomorrow morning as I did enjoy the walk on Wednesday in the cold 🙂 Good luck to those fasting today! X

Well I am having an unplanned liquid fast today. After lunch yesterday, I started feeling poorly sick. Upset stomach, and then later on headache, aches and shivers. I went to bed in thermals and wool socks, in July!

So today I’m fasting for health, not weight maintenance…

In the past, if I was ever ill and off my food (very rare, the latter 🙂 ), I’d always hope that the weight I lost stayed off (it didn’t!). Now I’m thinking I can’t really afford to lose any more…!

    Fast,
I didn’t see Trust Me I’m a Doctor. I meant to catch it, but it was nearly over by the time I remembered and turned the telly on. Is it worth catching on iPlayer? Very timely, that they would discuss BMI!

    Judy,
I hope you’re having a nice day with your granddaughter. I don’t blame you for passing on the stroller/ wet child scenario!

Happy, stay warm and get well. TMIAD wasn’t the most riveting ever, but if you’re having a poorly sofa day it would probably be an entertaining way of passing it. Look after yourself.

Oh, poor you, Happy. as long as you don’t get very poorly…or heaven forbids … compromised nerve endings… Your body is telling you to take a break but I hope you get better quickly!!! Take care

    Thanks Girls!

I’m not feeling very poorly this morning, but definitely under the weather…

I think I’ll be OK so long as I avoid food and stick to water… With hindsight my morning cuppa (with milk) was a mistake!

Happy – now that I’m properly awake – even better poorly-sofa viewing was ‘Ireland’s wild river: the mighty Shannon’. Stupendous – best thing I’ve seen this year. I even stopped multitasking for an hour to watch it properly.

Make the most of that sofa.

Just caught up. Sorry you seem “pawly” Happy. I think you’ve made the right choice. Fasting cures everything doesn’t it;) P

Hope you feel better soon, Happy.

It is interesting that in English we say feeling better to mean health, But we don’t use it to mean improved use of fingers. 😉

Cheers, From a half better Bay 🙂

    Hi All,

How nice to see I’ve started a trend (re: pawly–that probably wouldn’t have come up had I not brought up the poor/poorly discussion)! However, I hope Happy recovers quickly.

@lichtle: While my job does have similarities to yours, and graphic design is usually part of the requirement, I don’t produce brochures, packaging, technical data sheets, newsletters, adverts.. etc. Instead, I produce courses, instructor guides, participant guides, job aids, course assessments and evaluations, and eLearning simulations and demonstrations for the purpose of imparting knowledge. This involves training someone how to do something and testing to make sure he/she can do it–usually in cases where it’s necessary to do/keep a job, etc. I hope this makes sense. Explaining the work I do to those outside my field can sometimes be quite confusing and challenging. I hope this makes it more clear.

I’m fasting today (despite being 3 1/2 pounds/1.6 kilos/.25 stone UNDER goal this morning). However, instead of the water/psyllium/supplements only fasting I’ve been doing twice weekly for the past three weeks to prepare for weekend events with food, since I have no such events on the calendar for the next while, I’m back to one 500-calorie fast day a week, (today). I almost feel like I’m stuffing myself by comparison!

    Have a great weekend everyone,

    Jayney

I am a little older than most at 70 needed to lose weight. Started begining of march 15
at 73 kg am now 63 kg I am so happy do a little exercise push ups against my kitchen bench and some others I don’t know the name of, maybe I have made them up. But I have to say this is so easy to do I am so happy it was on TV here in Australia or I would never have known about. Hope everyone does really well, Best wishes to all we 5:2 er’s

Never too old to lose Hime! 🙂 10kg is great progress in 3 months. Keep up the good work!

Welcome Hime! You’ve made great progress. It DOES feel wonderful, being lighter, doesn’t it?
Thank goodness we Aussies also got a chance to witness Dr M’s ideas. 🙂 P

    Dear All,

I am pleased to report that it was only a 24 hour bug, and yes better now thanks.

As a result of it though I ended up having a 30 hour liquid fast. I wouldn’t have fasted earlier in the week if I’d known!

    Fast,

I ended up going back to bed and sleeping, so no telly!

    Hime,

Well done on the weight loss, that’s a great result in a relatively short space of time. Are you at goal now?

Welcome Hime! It will be nice getting to know you, and great work!

Happy I’m so glad you’re all better now. However, though I wasn’t ill, I might be in the same boat as you in one respect. This week I didn’t have any events on the weekend, so pretty much went back to normal TDEE (except Monday–because weight was just below goal Monday morning I decided to reduce calories and used a TDEE much lower than normal). At any rate, yesterday morning I was three and a half pounds BELOW goal, but had my fast day scheduled for yesterday, so went ahead as planned (though this was a 500-calorie fast day–not the water/psyllium/supplements only fasts I’ve been doing for the past three weeks). It will be interesting to see if any more weight drops off or I stay the same. In any event, today is a refeed day, and I’m really looking forward to it! I’m sure you’re due for a refeed day as well. Enjoy!

    Jayney

    Hi Jayney,

Yes I’m now 1.8kg below my upper maintenance weight, so no fasting for a while now!

    Hi Everyone
Hime-10 kgs is a great loss. Glad you are feeling better Happy. I’m now at my lowest weight for a few years and at the lowest of my goal range. 57 kgs. I haven’t been well as I have a bad cold ( and I sound worse than what I feel) so haven’t done the weekend socialising I had planned and even went for a walk today. I will fast again on Tuesday and see from there if I can drop to 6:1

@hime, so great to hear about your fantastic weight loss in a very short time. Are you maintaining now?

Well done everyone – and Happy, glad you’re better: sleeping is so much better for you than telly!

I have taken myself off for a Nordic walking lesson this morning: having bought the poles I realised it’s quite a specific technique, best learned from an expert. Bit of quich googling turned up a school not far from me, with one place left on this morning’s lesson. Thoroughly enjoyable – though it will take regular practice to get the co-ordination smooth. And wow, it’s good exercise! Every muscle group, plus cardio – my little ticker going boom diddy boom diddy boom diddy boom etc with no need of Peter Sellers. (Sorry, no-one born much after WW2 will get that one. ). The school also does regular walking groups, so I think I might join them – certainly during the long school hols when Pilates classes stop. I recommend! But for now I need a cup of tea and a nice sit down, before making salad and soup and quiche (and reclaiming from the freezer the other half of the chocolate cake we started last weekend!)or the rest of the w/e. Enjoy your re feeding time, everyone!

    Hi Fast,

Great that you found local support for Nordic walking. I hope you can still move your arms tomorrow!

The chocolate cake sounds good. No cake for me today, but our own strawberries with cream weren’t too shabby. It’s forecast to rain tomorrow morning though, so I may have to bake… 🙂

Funny about rainy days and baking, isn’t it? Always gets me that way, too. Enjoy it.
Sadly, our strawberries are finished – but the black currants are nearly there, and the rhubarbs still going strong. Mm, summer food – how good is that?!

    Fast,

The only problem with eating the appropriate amount of food for a slim person is the reduced opportunities to eat the copious amounts of food in season that the garden produces at this time of year! Although gorging on cucumber, courgette, salad, beans, peas, strawberries etc probably isn’t so bad!

Yes Happy I used to mourn all that food I would no longer be able to fit in. Somehow I’ve moved on and choose my pigging out carefully, like you do.
I’ve baked several times this weekend as it is cool and threatening rain. Must be an innate human need. Where did baking fit relative to shelter and love? P 🙁

Hi P, I was thinking it was baking or cleaning! I’m afraid I’m not a domestic goddess like Bay!

Judy, I hope you’re getting over your cold. Miserable for you.

Great going Happy! I really enjoy being below goal, and though I want to be careful not to get too carried away, it’s nice to be able to really stuff myself once a week and not have to be concerned with it–at least I don’t think I do. This morning’s weigh-in will tell the tale on that!

    Jayney

    Hi All,
I’m feeling much better today and did go to work- even tho its been the coldest morning in 18 years!!!Monday is my weigh in day and Im 600 grams down from last week :). I will do 2 fasts this week as I did put on a bit after Family Dinner last night. I was good and didn’t drink any wine as 1 daughter is pregnant and the other didn’t drink as she’d been to a winery for lunch.

    Hi MCs
    I’m doing a Tuesday fast this week (I’ll tell myself it’s Monday 😉 ).
Great long weekend away. Lots of socialising, but still well inside wriggle room. The roast pork and sticky date pudding were ok at the pub last night, but not so good that I couldn’t stop as soon as I had had enough. No “finish the whole plate, think of the starving children in ….” for me!
Have fun happy maintainers. P 🙂

Hi purple, sounds like a fun weekend. I always do a fast day on Tuesdays as Monday’s I’m usually good anyway after the weekend 🙂 also one of the girls at work is doing Tuesday’s and Thursday’s with me – we even meal plan and eat the same lunch!

Sounds like a good plan, Judy. Having a mate to do it with really helps. I just watched Espisode 2 of What’s the Right Diet for You? Interesting, looking back, at how much of their advice I did automatically when I first started 5:2. I guess that’s why it worked 😉 I’m a constant craver and use walking through takeaway food areas as inspiration not to eat!!!
Walking up to the shops in the sun now to buy a small piece of fish for us to have with salad for a fast dinner. We usually go all day on coffee and water and have a light “dinner” in the evening to enable a good night’s sleep.
Enjoy the rest of your Tuesday. P 🙂

Fabulous idea Judy, having a friend do it with you! You must be very good on weekends – that is my major reseeding time and I generally need a fast on Monday’s but even if I’m a bit low I fast anyway.

Purple, did you see that Program on TV or are you oN Foxtel or similar?

    Hi Carol
The program is showing on SBS OnDemand. I had seen Eps 1 and missed the second. The ideas could be seen as excuses for gaining weight, or as empowering, explaining which approach might suit you best. Dr M discussed it on this forum when it showed in the UK. P

    Hi P,

That’s interesting, I hadn’t really thought of it in terms of giving me an excuse (it’s my metabolism…it’s in my genes…it’s Ronald MacDonald’s fault…). It was interesting to recognize myself though, and hey! Another label! ‘Constant craver’…

It’s funny, but I do feel that I’m more of a constant craver now I’m slim. But I guess that’s because I don’t automatically give in to the cravings and feed myself now?

LOL@ Ronald McDonalds fault!! I too am a contant craver. I used to be very slim and could eat whatever i wanted (and I did!) without putting on weight. Now all our kids have left home we dont have much in the way of snacks on hand, much to DHS annoyance! Carol Im not good on the weekends at all thats why Im so good on Mondays. Todays fast is going well so far 🙂 and I did do a walk around the block yesterday late afternoon

Thanks Purple. Another constant craver here too lol!

    Hey All,

I’ve never seen these programmes, but they sound very interesting. Because of my workout schedule, the best way for me to avoid having two back-to-back refeed days is to have one on Monday (yes, Monday ;-), and one on Saturday.

This last week I got to my lowest weight since starting 5:2, and at Monday (yesterday) morning’s weigh in I was still more than 2 pounds/1 kilo/.2 stone UNDER goal, so had no issues with having a refeed day. In addition, because I was so far UNDER goal, I actually increased the number of calories from my usual 1900 to 2170. It will be interesting to see what happens with this morning’s weigh-in later.

Even if I overdid it a bit, I can reduce calories today and fast tomorrow (when I’ll be taking Tabata/HIT/HIIT class). That way I should be back on track (i.e. UNDER goal) by Thursday at the latest. This just seems to be working for me now that I’m still between jobs. Of course, once I’m working again I expect things to change, but hopefully not too much. Hope this is helpful.

    Jayney

Hi folks – I knew I was a constant craver, but was bothered to find I also have elements of emotional eating, ( boredom, rather than comfort, in my case, I think) which for some stupid reason I’d prided myself on not being. No, I don’t know either why that’s a worse thing to be – but it’s useful self knowledge.

Interesting discussion about ease of fasting after a more indulgent day. I find exactly the opposite – the more I’ve eaten at the weekend (especially if it was sweet stuff) the harder the Monday fast. Yesterday I woke up feeling really rough and knowing I couldn’t stick to a fast, so I ate normally but lightly and am fasting today instead – much easier. Thursday is usually only a semi fast these days, depending on the scales, but I do prefer to space them a bit more evenly, so think I shall return to Monday’s for normal use. It re-sets the clock for the week – I could see.my indulgent weekends turning into 4 days, given the chance!
