Unfortunately I’ve worked out from experience and food diary that my tdee is actually about 1200. If I followed the ‘average’ 2000 Cal guideline I would be massively obese by now!

Hi everyone just started today doing a fast day and it 11:19pm now and feeling hungry by haven’t ate since 12:30 this morning because I didn’t really plan my day properly :/ reading all your post really got me soo motivated though! If this week goes well I’m thinking of doing 4:3 next week as I have my birthday coming up!
Really impressed by dotty p, gingerbread and mammamoo ye are all so good at making people motivated and I hope ye reach yer target weight!! I am hoping to lose 28 pounds by chirstmas … Good luck to everyone and thanks for all the tips there great 🙂
Good morning all have just weighed this week and am pleased to say am now back on track having lost what I put on during my holiday plus an extra half pound! Did a 4:3 this week and will continue with this if I can as find it suits me. Love all the posts, really keeps me motivated. Agree with you 2fast2furious if I ate my tdee (which currently is 1900) I would be gaining rather than loosing, I need to eat below 1400 on my non-fast days just to maintain my fast day loses, I aim for about 350cals on fast days, which seems to be working.
This is the end of my 3rd week (1 week fasting/1 week holiday/1 week fasting) so not an ideal start but finding this new way of eating much easier to cope with than I thought it would be, and I think for me at least that’s the crux of the matter the thought of going without food when it has been drummed into you to have 3 meals a day plus 2 snacks. I now realize that I have been force feeding my body to keep up with this idea when in fact my body can function quite happily on much, much less food!
Well you are never too old to learn, thankfully!
Have a good day all.
Blimey!
I started the 5:2 yesterday. That was my first Fast day. I decided not to eat anything all day and stuck to black coffee (no sweetener) and loads of sparkling water. No problem at all, no real hunger pangs and I didn’t feel the need to cheat at any point – just kept saying ‘tomorrow I can eat normally’.
At 6 pm, the sun dipped below the yardarm so indulged in 2 shots (50 ml) of Famous Grouse with Ice and water. Amazingly that lasted for about 2 hours – it was delicious! 8 pm, the Scotch is gone the night is still young so I take a small glass of red wine (114 cals) with a slice of Ryvita (37 cals) to crunch on – again delicious but didn’t really need the wine! Went to bed around 10:30 pm feeling very pleased with myself having had a total Calorie intake of only 263 cals for the day (I know 226 of that was booze but hey – it was Friday night and this was my first day!).
Woke up today and weighed in, and here comes the ‘Blimey bit’, I was down 4.5 lbs – Yes really 4.5 lbs!!
Hi silver and welcome:
Of course, 4.5 pounds (of fat) in a day is impossible. Water weight all the way. Here are tips for those just starting 5:2: http://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/topic/warnings-to-newbies/
Good Luck!
Hi All
Been on 5:2 for past 12 days and so far lost 6.25lb, which I’m very pleased with. Previously lost 6.5 stone with Weight Watchers but had gained 12lb over past 10 months. Wanted to try something new and a friend put me onto 5:2. Have now read the book and watched the Horizon programme, which are both very interesting and make total sense. I find I’m able to cope with Fast Days knowing that the next day I can eat relatively normal again. However, like others have posted on here, I don’t think I can ‘eat what I like’ on none fast days as I gain weight very easily, but I love the fact I don’t have to count calories or points on none fast days. I drink copious amounts of sparking water to get me through the fast days and flavoured green tea for warm drinks. So far, so good. Good Luck everyone 🙂
Hi guys what a positive bunch you are a true inspiration. First day today currently working away in Dundee. Hotel surrounded by a KFC and a Maccy dees so keeping the door bolted.
I am a 53 year old male and have always had to watch what I consume as I think I have the metabolism of a tortoise I think I can actually gain weight by smell.
Need to lose about 2 stone if im honest so all your positive comments and tips are really helpful.
Read the book cover to cover so feel primed will be working all day all week and very busy so will find it easy to avoid temptation this week.
My biggest hurdle is not food but beer I do enjoy the odd half dozen so this will also help my liver it will think its been transplanted lol.
So all the best guys and I will keep you posted and keep reading yours.
Hi everyone!
Well I savagely overindulged yesterday but happy I lost 2.5lbs this week. I went fruit picking yesterday evening so even though I’m fasting today, I’ll be making bread, jam, yogurt, breakfast freezer muffins and meals. I’m one of those odd people who isn’t bothered by seeing/smelling food when I’m fasting! Lol. Doing a 4:3 week to make up for a huge meal (and pudding). Fingers crossed I can lose…
Hi everyone 🙂
Doing my second fasting day today!! I really love my breakfast but struggle on what to have does any one have any suggestions? Today I’m have a 2 egg white omelette with some spinach but would love a few ideas! Weighing in tomoro morning just to see how I getting on although I was out for my birthday dinner last night which involved pasta and cake
Gallysaz don’t just use the egg whites! The yolk has all the nutrients not the white so you’re throwing away all the good stuff which is important on a fast day. I’ve trained myself to skip breakfast but if I’m desperate I’ll have 20g oats with skimmed milk for porridge as it’s very filling. Oats soaked in plain yogurt overnight is tasty too. You can top with a little homemade apple sauce or berry compote. If you prefer savoury then put a cherry tomato or diced pepper in muffin pans with chopped bacon and beaten egg to make little breakfast muffins (they freeze well just reheat).
Hi all,
My husband and I started the 5:2 diet at the beginning of June and have both lost 11lb so far. Glad to hear that others have found their weight has stagnated at times as I have lost nothing for 2weeks and was starting to feel deflated (especially as my husband lost 3lb last week, grrr!) Clearly it all levels out over time, maybe I just need to cut back on non-fast days. I have also had a cold so perhaps that didn’t help . . . sorry gallysaz I tend not to eat until evening as having breakfast just made me want more food so no suggestions from me.
Lovely to hear others’ successes and struggles, keep up the good work!
Lots of big losses this week I see!
11st 5 today and 33.5 inch waist, down a massive 4/10ths an inch from last week! I weight daily being on 4:3 and I fluctuate between 2 ranges of weight, after fast weight is lowest and before fast weight is about 1-2 lbs heavier. I can add an extra lb on the weekend as I eat unrestricted, drink and have treats.
However my weight has dropped massively over the last 3 weeks, about 7lbs so far and being a Monday, im weighing on a before fast weight too, I hope to see 11st 5 again or lower tomorrow as this is the first fast of the week today and im down a lb from last week already
Hi AWoods, I am a newbie too.
Gallysaz, I concur with Mamamoo on the breakfast front. I don’t even bother soaking the oats, just 15gms with 20gms yoghurt and a handful of blueberries. Pretty delish.
Don’t know if you like a protein shake but that is a quick and easy option. Use half of the recommended dose, use water and some ice, a handful of frozen berries and it’s ok.
I like to eat with my daughter in the morning, colleagues at lunch and partner and daughter at night so all meals are pretty important for me.
Finding that poached chicken is great with some salad for lunch. Kale is working well with lot’s of lemon juice and chill flakes. Too tasty!
Hi A Better Me,
Do you count your calories on all days? I use myfitnesspal every day so that I aim for 1400 calories. Obviously eating too much causes weight gain but so can eating too little. Doing 4:3 for too long can send your metabolism through the floor because the body goes into starvation mode. I would suggest you log everything you would normally eat for a week and look at your TDEE. If it is coming out high or low line below 1200 then eat more or less accordingly. I eat 100 calories over my BMR most days and have Sundays off. This makes me lose 1-2lbs per week and I’ve been doing it for 6 weeks now.
Hi All,
Had a very heavy socialising weekend, with less exercise and more alcohol than in previous weeks so I really was not looking forward to the weekly weigh in this morning. Despite this I have lost 1 lb this week which is less than I normally lose but so much better than it could have been!
What this does mean is that I have lost my first stone (yes dear reader, I did say my first stone as if there will be more!). So that’s 14 lbs in 5 weeks which is great. 6 more weeks until I go on holiday and my target is to lose another 7 lbs by then so I’m attempting 4:3 this week for the first time as we have guests coming next week so I need to get a couple of lbs in the bank if possible.
Well done to everyone who managed to stay on the straight & narrow more than I did & we’ll see what this week brings.
@mamamoo I hear what you’re saying about egg yolks (& utterly agree about nutritional value) but on fasting days I tend to go more for volume to fill me up. I once had a 6 egg white omelette for dinner just so that it could be big! It’s also meant I’m a little ‘trapped’ regarding <500 cal recipes for my dinner at the mo because now that I’ve created a massive dish (which unfortunately involves the rather expensive slim pasta range!!) I don’t want to have anything more nutritionally dense incase it doesn’t fill me up… Help 😉 !
Otherwise, I feel like I’m doing well! My weight has stabilised (I think 1-2 lbs down this week?!) so a total of 8 lbs down in 13 days. I didn’t know if I could notice the difference that much, so took some progress pics & I *think* I can see some change (hope it’s not just the angle!).
Glad to hear that everyone else seems to be on a roll 🙂
Hi Mamamoo,
Thanks for responding to my post, I appreciate it.
On my fast days my calorie in take is between 150-450 calories. I never go above or below that.
On my normal days I don’t count my calories.
Something to note is that because I fast for 3 days I begin my fast from 12am to 7am (31hrs) rather than 7pm to 7am(36hrs).
By the way, what does TDEE and BMR stand for?
Thanks x
Luckylucy, I love homemade ratatouille on fast days because you get a lot for your calories. Soups are also great. My fave lunch is a fried egg (fry light spray) topped with a tiny bit of cheese, herbs and black pepper with roasted tomatoes and smoked salmon or ham. Today I had a Jamaican jerk chicken skewer with roasted tomatoes and garlic. Sometimes I do a stir fry with peanut butter, soy and katsu curry paste as a tasty satay sauce. Stir fry is very filling!
Hello Everyone! My fasting day is starting off great today! Last week was rough! I did 1 successful day last week and the other day I did okay but instead 500 it was 650. I still don’t think of that as a failure because it was not junk food but I know I can do better. This week I plan on doing 3 days. My wonderful husband complimented me this weekend when he said the back of my legs were starting to look smoother! That always makes a person feel good!
Thanks for the advice mammamoo will definatly try those muffins and I am a coeliac so oats isn’t really an option for me unless there gluten free which are horrible! But the muffins sound yum! Ajdreams the protein shake sounds like a good quick option too thanks! Just half way throught my 2nd fast day of the week it’s 4:00pm now feeling hungry but drinking loads of water and herbal teas! All the weight loss this week is so big congratulations getting excited to weigh in in the morning
Good Morning Everyone Starting my second fast day today. I’ve had my morning coffee and ready to take on the world. I haven’t stepped on the scale since I started 5:2 on Friday, August 1. I think Ill stay with 1 or 2 weigh-ins a week. In past attempts to lose weight I weighed in more often and if I saw a gain no matter how small It would upset me so that I ended up binging all day. I feel I’m ready to change that mindset. Wish me luck.
Daiji- Best of luck to you! Once you get used to the diet it is easy to follow. I find food that is low in calories and have made decent size meals from them. I only weigh myself every 2 weeks because like you the scales can be depressing! Remember to also take measurements and go by that! I often find that when the scales don’t move down the measurements do and that is very rewarding!
Hi! Im going on my second week, and I have lost 3 pounds! I dont really understand what “stones” are but it sounds like everyone is doing great! Its really hard to do sometimes on fast days because ill get home from class and its like an internal battle of whether or not to eat. So today I just ate a hard boiled egg and drank some tea, (I dont eat the yellow parts of eggs) and now im feeling like im gonna be fine until dinner. I normally cook a chicken breast with a little salt and pepper with brown rice and a veg. Always under 500 cal. I just tell myself it will all be worth it! Plus i find it easier to not have a lot of food in general in the kitchen, that way I’m not as tempted! Being that im a college student on a budget, this also helps!
Charliesugar I Find the best way of keeping track of calories is downloading myfitnesspal app. It can be downloaded on your computer or a tablet and mobile phone. I find it fabulous and could not manage without it. It has a huge database and you can scan barcodes off all bought foods. I am also new to this diet and find it is going really well, the first few day of fasting were a bit difficult and I have had a few weeks when i havent fasted. I am pleasantly surprised by how much easier it is to get through the fasting days now i know what i am doing. Sometimes i do go slightly over 500 calories by having a bit of milk with my coffee or a few extra strawberries but it doesnt seem to make any difference. I have lost 3.5 ponuds since i started and have another stone to go so will be keeping with it. Good luck.
Hi all, just checking in with yesterday’s update: So it was the end of week 3 and I have lost 10 lbs, also 2 inches off my bust and waist (no shifting from my hips according to the tape measure but my bum definitely looks smaller)!
I have also started an exercise thing – T25 (it’s a series of exercise videos that you do one a day and it’s only 25 minutes long). I’m still on my first week but I’m committed and I’m hoping to do the whole 10 week program and shed some more inches and tone up.
Fast day today. I’ve had a bit of porridge and an options hot choc for breakfast, and half a tin of chopped tomatoes and some sweetcorn for lunch – will have the rest for dinner probably.
Would love to hear more updates and weigh ins from June/July buddies.
2nd Fast day yesterday – only water and black coffee till 6 pm then 50 ml Famous Grouse @ 111 cals, full pot of Waitrose Chicken & Veg Broth (yummy)@ 272 cals finishing off with 175 ml Red Wine @159 cals for total of 542 cals so within my 600 allowance.
Walked to Canary Wharf and back (to get my soup from Waitrose!) and spent about an hour hitting gold balls at the range for an ‘extra’ 620 cal burn! Weighed in this morning and still sitting at the 193.5 lb I was after 1st Fast Day, on which I had had a 4.5 lb loss – so neither up nor down since then – I think that’s good?
Hi, I confess I am really struggling! I have done three weeks now and only lost 7lbs. This should make me happy I know but I started at 19stone 6lb lost 5lb the first week and then only 1lb the next two. With such a massive mountain to climb and such a big change to my eating I genuinely expected at least a stone in a month but that seems to be unlikely now! I even bought a juicer for a healthier non-fast day but it doesn’t seem to be helping. My non- fast days are a lot healthier with no chocolate or sweets and I am trying to eat less ready meals. On my fast days I eat just fruit and veg with a miso soup at lunch…. Any tips gratefully received to speed things up.
Thanks Silver fox, I guess I have a lot to prove to others and numbers seem to impress! Perhaps I need a slight mind shift to do this for me rather than a competition to prove to people I can be something other than the jolly fat woman! Will persevere and keep reading these forums. Thank you so much for your swift reply x
Don’t be harsh on yourself, 7lb is good. I lost a load at once, but a lot of it was water. I have slowed down now and have been stuck for a few days. I am very lazy when it comes to excercise (yes, that horrible E word) but notice a change when I have been for a walk, I don’t mean miles, I mean a round walk of a mile. That seems to kick my body in to losing again.
Hi all started In June 16th at 13s 7lb fat 27.4 the first 4 week were very encouraging loosing about a pound a week, slow I know but going the right way. But just recently the weight has stopped moving I’m now 13s 3lb fat 26.8 i know it’s better but not much. I do go to the gym 4 day a week and 3 of them days are weight lifting so I guess my overall weight might start to equal out but did expect my fat to drop more.
Hi, I started on the 28th July. The football season starts on the 31st August so my aim is to drop as much as I can for that and then keep going until the Birmingham Half Marathon on the 19th October.
Starting weight is about 13.5 stone (BMI of 29.2!!). Using the Wii Fit to do my measurements. Haven’t weighed myself since the 28th, will probably do it every other week.
Currently doing 4:3. Fasting Mon, Wed and Friday. Trying my hardest not to think of food right now!
Vicky65, why are you trying to impress other people? If big losses are all they are interested in then sod them! Your body will drop the weight as and when it sees fit. 7lbs is a great loss. You have to remember this is a lifestyle change not a fad diet promising 11lbs in 3 weeks. If you lose it quickly hen it’s likely to be mostly water and will go straight back on again. Slower losses are healthier and more likely to stay off. Don’t forget to measure because you’d be amazed at how many pounds you can fluctuate due to water, muscle gain/loss, poo and whatever you’ve consumed. I did a day of weighing 4 times out of interest and there was a difference of 8lbs! Keep up the good work hun 🙂
Hi Vicky65 from Vicki (50)
buggar the competition! You are the only one who matters.
You do have a big lot to lose, but it’s taken 50 years to get there – surely if you could look into the future and see that in 2 years you could drop 7 stone you wouldn’t question whether or not to do it?
I lost 3 stone 4lb over a year (with a few glitches and lapses) and have kept it off (from 14st3lb) to 11 stone. Now after 6 months being lazy now going to fast seriously again to get to 10 stone.
So don’t worry about speeding things up, just keep progressing as you are. I found from the beginning it was easier to just drink water on fast days, I know it’s not for everyone (but I never thought at the beginning that I could do without food for the period)
I think ditching the processed food and prepared meals is a major breakthrough – if you can prepare things yourself you will be eating much healthier and fresher food, and that will also elp you lose.
And KEEP MEASURING – often you will not lose any weight in a week but will drop inches!
I hope it works for you
Vicki
