Hello Debbie,
I would love to join this group. Thank you so much for creating it and an invitation.
I hope to lose 40 lbs. Start of challenge is 189lbs (5’6″)
Strength in numbers is the way. 🙂
Today is Sept 5 and it is my first day on the diet -and I am making it a fast day.
Best wishes to all!
Day 5 Sussex NFD
Back to work today after the summer and feeling refreshed and positive. It’s also helpful when you feel good about yourself! ‘School’ lunch today – a very dull, very un-Primal chilli with salty white rice (which I didn’t eat) but I had some macadamia nuts with me for snacking. Tonight – Thai fish cakes with salad (yum). Tomorrow is a FD which should be OK as I will be busy at work so not too much time to feel hungry.
Lots of interesting posts about exercise – it’s worth reading Dr Mosley’s book on Fast exercise- it’s a bit of an eye-opener given the ‘advice’ handed down routinely from so called experts. Also worth watching is the first Trust me, I’m a Doctor, which also compares fast exercise with conventional wisdom.
Keep smiling
SSB
Day 5 Minnesota,USA FD
Liquids only today, hopefully. I will use my homemade bone broths for supper if I feel too hungry with only water and tea. My weight was up over a Kg from Friday, so I’m very motivated to stick to liquids only today.
Welcome, CanadaGirl! This is a wonderful forum for support. Nice post Elphaba, about the binges so many of us have experienced. It’s not the end of the world when it happens, and certainly not something we can’t recover from. We just put it behind us and move forward with strengthened resolve.
Good luck everyone.
Day 5 / FD / Derby,UK
Tough fast day today. Intended to do a 36 hour liquid only, but struggling already at 21hrs. Will keep going though, partially because I’ve made my plight embarrassingly public on social media (and partly because I’m stubborn.)
Weighed myself this morning; no weight gain after 4 NFDs, which I’m pleased about. Goal for this week’s NFDs is not to go completely crazy on dairy, just because it’s allowed.
Also, did some sums today… With a TDEE of 2100, two 36 hour liquid fasts a week should create a deficit of 7350 cals and theoretically, 2lbs a week weight loss. Can anyone tell me if that’s about right?
Day5:NFD:UK
Weight down by almost 2 lb since last Monday; it’s hard to judge needle on scales so can’t be precise. Had toast, plain yoghurt & berries for breakfast, an apple mid morning, left over soup for lunch, left over chicken & stir fry veg for dinner. Plenty of tea and water. I will have a cup of tea & 2 squares of dark chocolate shortly then the kitchen will be closed. I try to get in a brisk walk each day of about 2miles. I have not calculated my calories for today but think it may be around 1500. Reading the posts everyday is a great distraction and motivation, thank you to everyone for sharing the good the bad; the ups and downs. I tried a month of 4:3 at start of summer thinking it would kick start my weight loss but I ate way too much on NFDs and constantly craved fried food & carbs. I have found 5:2 much easier to cope with and watching TDEE is making a great difference already. Good luck everyone.
Day 5 USA NFD
Yesterday was a FD and this morning we are both down at our daily weigh in – I dropped 1.2 lb and OH dropped a full 2 lb. This was really a shock and pleasant surprise. Since this was an “extra” fast day for us, so I was pretty liberal with the low cal veggies and not even counting the exact calories. I figure it was around 500-600 calories. Here’s our detailed food list from yesterday. Will repeat next Sunday.
Early morning – large mug of Bullet Proof Coffee
11am – 2 egg frittata with lots of broccoli, Bok Chou, mushrooms, tiny amont of grated Yukon potato, onion and garlic. 1T of crated 4 cheese mixture (20 cal per Tsp according to the container) used non stick skillet rubbed with coconut oil.
3pm – giant salad of organic greens, cabbage, chilled sauerkraut ( the good kind with probiotics) tomato, red onion, chia seeds, cucumber, for dressing tossed with yellow mustard, zero cal mayo, dill, stevia, salt/pepper.
6 pm one organic skinless chicken breast sauted with lots of green beans, garlic, onion, zuchinne, mushrooms. Added pasta sauce from a jar and 1T of the 4 blend grated cheese on top.
Good luck to all of us.thanks to all for the support!
Day 5: Pacific NW USA, 500 cal FD
I stayed under TDEE yesterday. Today I’ve had white tea so far and I’ll carefully measure the cream that goes into my ice coffee at noon so I can save all the cals for sashimi with salad and marinated veggies at dinner out with friends tonight. Yesterday we walked 4 miles. Today that energy will be spent on late summer garden clean up.
5:2 and no refined cards has been very successful for me since May but I found liquid only fasting easier than counting calories when there were no social events going on. While traveling this summer at times I had to do my 2 FD’s back-to-back. I saw a good bump on the scales when I did b2b’s but of course the bigger challenge was not over compensating on NFD’s. Still working on that!
I re-read Dr M’s FAQ’s on this site and then read an interview with Dr Varady so just to mix things up and keep my body guessing and my mind busy I decided to give 4:3 a try. This is my 2nd week experimenting with 4:3. I had a good result last week when I did a Mon/Tues/Fri 4:3 and will compare again this Wed when I weigh in after a 500 cal FD today and a liquid only FD tomorrow.
My goal is also to reduce stress and increase sleep so ditto what you said, Brighton.
Lany – age can’t be a factor for you yet!! If it is, that makes me past hope (Ha!)
DMWalking (I’m going with a more positive spin that you are still walking!) – Holly’s advise to you was spot on and something we all struggle with so please know we are along on this journey with you. Staying below TDEE 5 days a week and fasting with 1/4 TDEE on 2 days is a big enough health benefit that to get closer as we keep trying is the real accomplishment!
Lael – recognizing real hunger from emotional eating, wow, what a skill!
Bethany – didn’t do your math but it sounds about right, everything else being equal.
Maui – congrats to you and your hubbie, do you mean that you did an extra FD making it a 4:3 week for you?
Day 5 USA NFD extra post
back2thefuture thanks for asking…yes, we are trying 4:3 for the first 2 weeks of the sept challenge. However, we started sept 1, Thursday with our very first FD so Sunday was only the 2nd FD- thus our weight loss is probably mostly water loss. We will continue with 4:3 making Tues Thurs Sun our FD and see what happens. I tend to get discouraged if I go up a few ounces but hoping this time will be different! I feel being part of this fantastic group of caring, knowledgeable people from around the world will make the difference. I know I will never feel like I’m all alone on this journey.
Day 6 NFD New Zealand
FD yesterday was relatively easy, it’s my NFD today that gets me worried.
I recalculated my TDEE and am motivated to stick at or slightly under this. I think I definitely took a far too relaxed approach to the first couple of weeks of NFD, I haven’t eaten bread more than once or twice a year for probably 15years yet decided for some bizzare reason in the NFD to eat English muffins, toast and scones (not all at the same time of course). I don’t even enjoy bread so my strange desire to have such highly refined carbs is odd but I’m back on track mentally with the idea that I can’t just eat what I want and get away without it impacting my body and my health both physically and emotionally. Onwards and downwards today!
Day 5 monday/UK/NFD
Day 5 Monday:🔵:polish cold fish in yoghurt with large salad, chocolate magnum and ASDA home brand chocolate bar 100g. And maybe 2 or 3 handfuls of chips from the chippy. (popped down mums again that women is gonna be the death of me. Being offered food all the time down there. I never buy chocolate/ice creams myself. Takeaway yes fair enough. But never chocolate/ icecreams crisps ect)
Bike:🔵: min 36:29/km 13.3
Youtube video/Bike Workout to Lose 10 Pounds THIS WEEK – Lose 30 Pounds in 30 days/by Adrian Bryant. Bloody good work out. Love hiit, short but sweet. But always a true killer
Thinking of starting, maybe 4:3 diet with water fasts as once i start eating im always hungry find pure water is easier than eating on fast days. To kick start this diet. And to help remove this weight. That the doctor said is causing my “smokers cough”
Australian Day 6 NFD – this is not a good week. Too much food, too much alcohol and too little exercise. But just so much going on at home and work I can’t cope without the comfort eating. I keep telling myself “just one more week and it will all be better” but unfortunately not yet. Still this is a WOL and there will always be stresses so I am going to stay in these forums and try to stick to 5:2 as much as possible but not let that become yet another stress. Sorry to moan.
New Zealand day 6 NFD
Hannah Watto – I know exactly how you feel and it makes me sad to read about someone who is trying to do good for themselves start out by saying it is not a good week. Every day you choose to stick with creating a better healthier lifestyle for yourself is a good one, even when you eat for reasons other than true hunger, none of us are perfect but to me that’s the beauty of 5:2. We don’t have to be perfect all the time. I need to believe that if we all keep trying together we will achieve our individual goals. Life is always going to put obstacles in the pathway to good health but with 5:2 if it’s just too big of an obstacle today we can choose to let go of punishing ourselves about food choices and simply make our fast day another day. Keep working at it, we’re all in this together.
Day 6 / Australian in Asia / NFD
Well because I wasn’t well yesterday, it was one of the easiest fast days. I usually water fast until 6pm anyway, so that was easy, and then dinner of rare steak sliced over steamed veggies for a 275 calorie total for the day.
And this morning, after staying the same for over a week I had dropped 1kg overnight (not unexpected, I was peeing all day yesterday – I do love the “whoosh” cycle!).
Today is non fast, but I still won’t eat until lunch time (I usually don’t). Out for dinner tonight but it’s a buffet so should be easy to make sensible choices of lean meats and lots of veggies.
So after my weigh in this morning, and finding out I’ve lots ten cms off that flab that is the top of my stomach, and 4cms off my waist, I’m feeling more positive than I have for a while.
Have a great day everyone
Lost in September: 1kg
Lost since 8 Aug: 4.5kg
Thank you Lany. Just writing about my struggles earlier actually made me feel a lot better (one of the fabulous aspects of this forum!) and it is now nearly 2pm and apparently I did have it in me to do a liquid-only fast day :). I’m not going to worry about tonight until I get there but if I complete my 24-hour fast successfully I will be very happy.
Still Day 5: Pacific NW USA, 500 cal FD turned into about 1000 NFD
Our friend swears he made a ressie but the restaurant wasn’t open when we got there (holiday closure). It was my first choice for a FD but instead we retreated to a restaurant that I love on a NFD and so I went over a little by about one shrimp appetizer. Not a FD today but tomorrow back to work and it will be an easier liquid only FD.
Maui – thanks for your reply. I still want to make this a 4:3 week for my experiment so you will be my inspiration on Tues and Thurs!
Neptune – welcome, we’ll send summer down your way!
DMWalking – good on you for the inspirational bike ride! You have inspired me to get on my HIT program on my bike in the morning!
Asweet – it is so sweet you broke through your plateau!
Hannah – a little moaning can be good for the soul! Now onward!
Elphaba – you’re back on the mend and downwards you go!!
Willl – come on down! Great that you’re on board!
Day 6 England, FD
Succesful FD yesterday, Black tea / coffee until 4pm Miso Soup. Kept busy in th evening giving myself a manicure. Nice😀
Wicked, wicked scales did not move an ounce this morning going to try another Liquid only day until 5pm then have-
Chicken Salad.
That will be 44hours
I always find this second day much easier, not so hungry or food focused
I am thinking of doing another FD tomorrow, just to kick start the weight loss.

Day 6. Sussex U.K.
NFD.
Successful fast yesterday. Will have lunch at midday and last meal between 7 and 8. No snack in between.
Can’t believe how bright I feel the morning after fasting. Wish I had known it years ago when I thought I would collapse if I didn’t put food in my mouth every 2 to 3 hours!
Have a great day everyone.
Sunshine Coast Aus Day 6: FD that rolled over into an NFD . Stomach on legs today. Just can’t work out what’s going on but certain that the stress of the caring role is dragging me down somewhat. Doesn’t matter how much you know, or how well you’ve done, the hunger troll can still get you. Will do my very best to make tomorrow an FD.
Gozo, Malta
Nfd today. Had coffee with semi skimmed milk and a breakfast sponge, 150 calories in all. Today for lunch it’s chicken chilli with rice around 550 calories. This evening I’m going out for dinner but will have only one course. I did hit climbing up the stairs as quickly as I can and going down slowly for five times.
Tomorrow is supposed to be a fast day for me in order to do 4:3 but I may go up to 680 calories. I shall fast in the morning having a smoothie for 180 calories and eat a larger meal in the evening.
I’m babysitting my one month old grandson this morning while his mother (my daughter) recuperate sleeping as at night he wakes her so many times.
Have a great Tuesday everyone. Onwards and downwards.
sad day for me after my fast on Sunday, monday showed an increase of .1kg and than i ate below 1200 calories yesterday and today showed another gain of .1kg. tom back to another fast day but was so sad cuz normally after a fast i lost .5 kilos which inspires be to be good.. i am making better choices with food nowadays and loads of exercise in about 5 yoga session and 5 gym session of 40 mins treadmill or cycle in a week. so kind of expected more – hence so far not lost anything in september 🙁 total loss of 3.1 since august thanks to september gain.
is it possible i am gaining muscle, or water to help heal muscle tear? or am i eating too less during the rest of the week? sometimes i dont manage 1200 but some days i do go to 1300 – i am eating carbs very rarely and tracking it all in fitnesspal so confused.. 🙁
skinny: I had the same thing. Weight isn’t linear, it goes up and down and back up again, but the overall trend should be down. I had over a week where I was up .1, down .1, up .2, etc etc then down 1 whole kg overnight. It goes up and down. If you know you are doing the right things, then just don’t worry about it, and keep going. Your body is a mysterious thing.
Normally I would have given up, but not this time, and I’m glad I stuck with it. From the sound of it, don’t change anything the whole of September, and see where you are at by the end of the month.
And don’t give up!
Surrey UK DAY 6
Did not post yesterday, I have been so very busy getting things sorted, when I finally stopped it was after 12. Will fast tomorrow, I have a few things brewing in my mind and some posts I would like to respond to, but no time today! Good luck to all, weigh in again on Friday, and not very optimistic, but that will be entirely down to my own choices.
London Day 6 NFD 68.7kg
Successfully did a 36h fast yesterday (thank you ciren2 for the encouragement – hope yours went well too). It was tough but managed to get through it.
NFD today. Broke fast with an egg-bacon-muffin and a coffee (270 calories). Planning to keep going until I’m hungry before I have lunch. My TDEE is supposed to be 1624 (some calculators predict higher, but I’ve stayed with the lowest one), so will try and stick below that.
TRX class tonight.
Skinny55, my advice for weight loss is don’t depend on exercise for that. Weight loss is >90% to do with the diet – WHAT we eat and WHEN we eat (this is Dr Fung’s advise) – not even how much we eat because “weight loss = calories IN – calories OUT” isn’t as simple as it seems. You will find that with exercise your body shape will change, you’ll probably lose inches off your waist, hips etc. but the effect on the scales will be much less.
If you read some of the earlier posts from more experienced ‘fasters’ you’ll see what I mean. I’m also speaking with personal experience, though <1yr worth. I used to firmly believe (supported by pretty much everyone around me) that exercise will help me lose weight – alas it hasn’t happened. In fact exercise has slowed down my 5:2 weight loss. BUt I carry on because exercise is my anti-depressant.
Don’t be discouraged – stick to the fasting guidance and carry on. We’re all in this together.
As for exercise, do it for a reason other than pure weight loss. That way, you’ll find reasons to carry on with both fasting and exercising.
Please others feel free to clarify/disagree/agree with what I said. Simcoeluv? 🙂
Day 6 Italy – NFD
Weigh: 73.6kg
Put 1 kilo back on, i will accept that no problem.
Fuvvie sorry to hear you feeling down, it must be very difficult trying to fit everything in but please don’t let your role as carer take over 100%, you are important too.
Deadmanwalking impressive biking, you sound so determined.
Good luck to everyone fasting and also to those eating within their TDEE
So Today is a NFD for me. I did FD on Monday ( Labor Day ) and it was great! It felt good to reset my body after a weekend of Barbecue. The only thing that I’ve got to curb is my sudden addiction to iced coffee. I usually get soy and sweetener. I know its empty calories and should be avoided at all costs. I’m planning to go black on Thursday which is my next FD. I’m really enjoying this challenge I’m looking to loose at least 5 lbs. Any suggestions on the coffee thing?
Day 6 / Tweed Coast Australia / NFD
Am learning about my own limitations and when I give too much, feel spent and extra hungry in aftermath. Ate a lot more this afternoon than I would have otherwise. Thankfully it was all healthy food! …No sugar, grains or refined carbs so I’m happy about that! If I’m going to overeat is better to do so with an extra handful of activated macadamia nuts and my instant ‘fudge’ made from black sesame seeds stirred into black sesame tahini, raw carob powder and mesquite than many other things that come to mind! I’m patting myself on the back here for making caring choices in moments of weakness. After all, I as a human will always be roughly 80% perfect and 15-20% not so perfect and this is my way of making the most of the imperfection.
Day 6. NJUSA. NFD. Today starts my second full week on the 5-2 diet I feel amazing I really can’t believe how clean you feel after a fast day I am down 6 pounds which I know is a lot of water weight but all I know is the scale went down and as long as we can keep it going in that direction life is good. Feel great going to stick under my tdee today. Holiday weekend is over so life will get back to a normal pace and I feel very very positive going into the second week even bought a new scale which marks tenths of a pound every little bit helps – have a great day everybody.
Patti67 so true the last high protein diet I was on 6 months ago had me eating 6 times a day I was setting the alarm on my phone to ring so that I wouldn’t miss anything every two-and-a-half to three hours I too thought if I didn’t put food in my mouth I would pass out or become violently ill now I know how good a fast day makes you feel a fast day’ – feels amazing -good luck keep going
