  • Katie I don’t really count my calories on fast days I just guess….oops! And I never count on non fast days as its too much like being on a diet!!
    You’ve done really well and I wouldn’t worry about goin over a tiny bit. It will get easier every time you fast x

    Katie, with your height, I wouldn’t be surprised if your tdee is higher than most, so a quarter of that may be over 500.

    My dinner was delicious by the way, a massive plate full, that I couldn’t finish.

    KatieJoy, the calorie count looks fine but one of the 5:2 principles is to increase protein intake and minimize carbs on FD’s. I’d eliminate the fruit and add some lean protein. This helps with hunger too.

    Unless you are a very small person 1000 cal seems like too little. Did you determine your TDEE?

    Katie, sounds like you did great today! Going over by 29 calories is nothing. Am going to aim for 1000 cals tomorrow too. Have taken chickpea and spinach curry out of the freezer for tomorrow. Love a bit of spice. 420 cals today so can’t have any more to eat.

    I find calorie counting really helpful. If I don’t count I can easily go over the threshold. I work from home mostly so I can easily count and weigh my portions.

    Definitely sticking to veggie fasting. I have wanted to incorporate more vegetarian meals into my diet so this is a great excuse. I could always cook an omelette for protein if needed.

    It would be great if I lost an inch off my hips by the end of the week! Here’s to dreaming huh!? Lol

    My TDEE is 1969 if I use the 13st weight. (Don’t know accurately how much I weigh.)

    Today is my first day and Monday and Wednesdays work best for me. The hunger pangs are worst in the evening. It is most difficult since I’m doing by myself and get to watch my wife have a full dinner. Love this forum, it’s very helpful. Good Luck!

    Hi everyone and welcome Ric. Well done Ric in getting your first fast done. It dies getter easier. Like you evenings are my tricky time as that is the time I usually munch. God you have been very disciplined watching your wife having a full meal when you are limiting calories. A very very well done to you. Keep us updated about how you are doing?

    Well I only had 410 calories yesterday….the stroganoff meal did contain rice and I usually avoid carbs on fast days but never mind. I bought some Rowntrees random ice lollies which are only 42 cals and they give me a sweet fix if I’m desperate.

    Hi Ric, I think most of us would agree that evenings are worse. Never mind watching your wife eat a full meal, I cook my hubby his and watch him eat it 🙁

    No calorie counting for me today but I won’t “pig” out either. Probably won’t eat until around 1pm so I have a longer fast

    After an out of control weekend, and unable to face my usual FD yesterday I have stuck to it today, YEH! water, tea and coffee only, will stick to 350 cals tomorrow, it’s all planned!
    I also cook for OH on fast days, I try to cook things I don’t particularly like, keeps us both happy.(ish). 🙂
    Your right lazycat, the sunshine does make you feel more motivated.
    Feeling good so far, I am over my difficult time 5-7 o’clock. What are you all having tomorrow? It’s such an inspiration, so far I have cottage pie, cauly topping and chickpea and spinach curry on my mind.

    Goosey forget what I said about me being motivated. Didn’t manage to do 1000 cals today but still under my TDEE. Struggled today as I was off. As I type I am eating chocolate buttons. Too many temptations. Fast tomorrow will be fluid until dinner- slim pasta, mushrooms and sauce then yoghurt and berries. Will need to either do a fast or low cal day on Thursday in hope the the scales move in right direction.

    I’m new to the 5:2, on my second week now. Fasting on Mondays and Wednesdays too. So glad to join the forum, reading your messages helps a lot!

    I saw that some are doing a 1000 kcal on non fast days? doing the same (at least trying to). Have you had good experience/results with this method? Although I have a break from all of it on Saturdays, eating a bit more relaxed then.

    Tomorrow is fast day. had my dinner couple of hours ago, going to try to keep my fasting window until dinner tomorrow. I might have a 124kcal proteinbar before going to the gym tomorrow afternoon in case I feel like crashing, but hoping to avoid that….so I hear that it gets easier?..God I hope so..

    Am full of great plans but habit of going over the 1000 cals and some weekends going crazy for gin so no weight loss over past few weeks. Actually put on 1lb over 2 weeks hence plan 1000 cals or an extra fast day. How are you doing? It does get easier on fast days but best to be busy. I should practice what I preach as didn’t keep busy today when off work, hence over 1000cals. Keep us updated on how you are getting on.

    Is there only me that doesn’t count on non fast days? Feel a bit left out 🙁
    I just can’t do it…hence the 5:2. I just love my food too much. Hoping to keep the scales and the tape measure moving down slowly but surely

    I know what you mean, just had a 1000 cals day, but got so hungry that I had a handful of nuts, there goes that 1000 cals day…ah! so frustrating, but I hate going to bed hungry when I know I have a 24h fast to look forward to the next day.

    I fully agree, staying busy is key. The easiest I’ve had in losing weight in the past has been when work has been extremely busy, because then I never think about food, I don’t have time to feel hungry. Unfortunately work is a bit slow now, so that leaves a lot of time to reflect on how hungry I am..

    Alright, let’s get this thing under control! We are all fasting tomorrow right? Let’s do an flawless fast. I’ll do a half fast on Thursday as well(meaning no breakfast, no lunch, but dinner at a work event), so I guess fasting but not naive enough to think I’ll keep it at 500 cals. I’ll have to do the same on Friday I think..Amazing how much food and socializing are interconnected, isn’t it? it’s almost a bit annoying.

    don’t feel left out! The only reason why I personally try to count on non fast days is because my weekends usually go a bit nuts..I mean no binging or anything, but let’s just say that some snacks, a nice dinner and some wine will not end anywhere close to my TEE level, but far beyond…so I try to make up for it on the other days of the week..a lot of people have really good discipline when it comes to weekends as well as weekdays, I’m just not one of them unfortunately. It doesn’t help living with a guy who can eat thousands and thousands of calories, and never put on any weight 🙁 unfair!

    When is the best day to weigh/take measurements?

    I don’t do it daily. I was planning on doing it once a week.

    I used to be one of those people who could eat anything and never gain an ounce but after giving up smoking in my 30s something changed ??
    That’s why I find dieting so hard but can cope with the 5:2
    I try not to go mad at weekends as Thu-Mon is a long time without fasting and could do serious damage to the waistline but I find after fasting for a few weeks my appetite diminishes anyway. I dont have any trouble going most of the day without eating even on non fast days as I’m usually busy.
    Hope you’re coping with it.

    Katie I usually weigh either once a week or fortnightly after my 2nd fast day. I find weighing or measuring too often can be demoralising if the numbers don’t go down quick enough which can often be the case. On the other hand you’ve got to check to make sure it’s going the right way. Last year the scales hardly moved but the cms were definitely reduced. I don’t bother at all when I get my period…..horrendous!!

    Hi guys, hope you hare having a good fast day!

    I have a question- during the days I fast (like today) I don’t mind the hunger that much, and I susally get quite cold, which is managable, but my head..I get this ‘heaviness’, not a classical headache but more like a constant cloudiness, in lack of a better word. Anyone has experienced this and have tips on how to get rid of it? or does it go away after some period of fasting? I drink a lot of water, so I try to stay hydrated, but doesn’t really help..

    Patricia, I can get a thick head feeling, actually have it now also can lead to dizzy spells, for me it is a kind of dehydration. I do drink plenty of water, but I think it may be the lack of sugars and salts, that are in many foods and drinks.

    I’ve had a quiet morning today, but have a busy afternoon, so hoping I wont have too many problems today. My dinner is cooked and waiting for me in the fridge.

    Michelle, I don’t count calories on other days, I have been trying to do a 1000cal day on a Friday or Saturday, but get a bit unstuck with that in the evening. But I DO really count calories on fast days, everything is weighed and measured every single calorie is counted, you have to remember that little splash of oil you may be use to fry your 13 calorie mushrooms in is 90cals. So it can be so easy to go over without realising.

    Still really busy and not even thought about food. Got a 378 calorie dinner from M&S waiting in the fridge. I really should count Emma but I usually have the same things which I know are under 500. I may go over with the odd drink? At the moment it seems to be working but will look at it again if I feel I’m not losing as I should. I’m trying not to “pig” out on non fast days but as I’ve said before I find my appetite isn’t as big anyway after fasting for a month.
    I get the odd headaches Patricia and I put it down to the same as Emma lack of sugar and salts and that’s why I have the odd glass of Volvic flavoured water.

    Second fast day. Much easier than the first one. About this time I was really starting to flag. (4pm here) I have kept busy and did a lot of housework! I also face timed my mum whilst drinking a green tea for a natter.

    I will measure myself every Thursday, starting next week. Hopefully I would of lost something!

    Patricia, I sometimes get a dull ache on fast days but not too troublesome. Usually drink more water or herbal tea.

    Katie, am glad your fast is a bit easier this time. I am always a bit hyper until around lunch time then I take a short dip the I level out. Weird or what??

    Fast going okay so far (fatal last words). Only 40 cals in fluids. Dinner slim pasta and mushrooms with a chilli and tomato sauce – 95 cals, yoghurt and berries 95 cals. Going to try and keep the cals at that and not munch.

    I had a stir fry of vegetables, in soy sauce, for dinner. Was delicious.

    I have enough calories left over for a proper cup of tea later.

    Patricia I used to get that heavy head sometimes, found Miso Soup did the trick, so agree it is prob lack of salts.
    Michelle, I didn’t use to count cals but found the diet most effective once I started counting cals and extending the fast period, you have always got that up your sleeve if your weight loss slows.
    Elc, lazycat, Kate you have all done great today- sorry if I have missed anyone, for those of you who weigh tomorrow I will be all ears, please post.
    I have had a lovely day today, have been out and about in the sunshine all day.
    Just had dinner, fish and green beans, it was lovely and only 295 cals having a black coffee now and feeling good.
    Weekends are definitely my Achilles heal so I am just going to accept that and try to save cals to use then.
    I would love a glass of wine this evening, but I have started a new habit of no wine mon,tues,wed, and I am really going to stick to it no matter what. :/

    Am craving crackers and cheese and not through hunger. Will just need to have a nicotine lozenge and distract myself. Total cals for today 220. If I manage to keep to that then it will be the first time that my cals for a fast day will be under 300. Feel like I should celebrate with a large gin!!

    My god you guys are masters! so few calories!

    I need to restrict my calories further I think, I end up around 450-500 which doesn’t leave a lot of margin for error, should probably keep it at max 400. I think 24h fast might have been a bit too ambitious for me to start with…maybe split the meals in two because around 3-4 pm, I get really tired and it feels like the clock just stops. Also cooking during the fast days seem to be a mistake…preparing the food in advance might make it easier.

    gooseylucey, Misou soup sounds like a good idea, I love the taste, it feels like actual food, and I would guess there aren’t that many calories in it, right? could be a great lunch.

    Miso soup with tofu is my favourite Clearspring has 29.5 cals. Pre-preparedness is a must – for me anyway.

    Talking about soup. I had a thick veggie soup for my lunch today. That really helped fill me up for longer so I wasn’t flagging as bad like I was on Monday. The thicker the soup the better.

    No changes on the scale this week 🙁 well that was a disappointment.

    Really need to step up my game.

    It’s a bit scary becaue the weekend is approaching now with parents in law visiting Fri-Sun, and already tonight I’ll be at a work event for dinner…trying to offset this (to some extent at least) with non-fat yoghurt+berries for lunch today and tomorrow. And hopefully a low-cal Sunday.

    Now back down to 9stone 5lb, that I was on the 21stof may!
    Measurements all the same.

    Well folks I have just jumped on the scales- 2lbs off. YIPEEE! In reality it is the 1lb that I recently put back on and an extra lb. Was starting to give up the ghost as recently the scales didn’t move and then when they did they moved in thee wrong direction. It has given me a bit of motivation.

    Emma, it sounds as if you have hardly anything to lose. Those last few lbs sound as if they are very tricky. However, with your determination I am sure that you will kick them to the kerb in no time!

    Hello I no how you feel, started this diet last yr and then stopped in September and since I have put on 2 stone, I start every morning and quit by lunch time, I’m depressed and not happy in myself, so starting tomorrow morning, going to do a fast as my first day and then after I’ll make Mondays and Wednesdays my fast days, need to remember that on my non fast days not stuff myself and to eat a bit healthier, well that’s my plan lol, good luck xx

    This is my 2nd time on the 5:2 as well. Like you did it last year but unlike you I played with it. Didn’t really try and included 2 gin and tonics as part of my 500 cals. Crazy or what!! However, this time I am trying to stick to it. Couple of girlie nights out, drinking my weight in gin and eating rubbish during 2 day hangover did set me back recently. Thankfully am bit more motivated.

    Sorry Patricia , I was thinking about you and forgot to say- do your best- that’s all you can do, sometimes if you have guests you can busy yourself making them comfortable and they don’t notice your not eating much, if you are serving the food they don’t notice your smaller portion or what you scrape into the bin.
    But next week they will be gone and you can find your own way, as we all have done / or are doing, we all try different things all the time, until you find what suits you, but all the time we are creeping nearer and nearer our goals. Good luck, keep in touch. Goosey x

    Hi Everyone

    Had to fast Tuesday and Thursday this week as had a girls night out on Monday and a hospital appointment on Wednesday. A loss again for me this week. Yippee.. Onlly 1.3 pounds but getting there slowly! Elc 9.5 is my goal weight so don’t get too disheartened the lower your goal the tougher it will be to achieve. Re cooking for partners I often give mine what I am eating but I add chips or carbs as he cycles. Re physical things on fast days I sometimes feel cold. Tea last night was king prawns, French beans cooked and some mozzarella with lime juice and pepper. Very tasty and little thought required. About 350 cals I think. Hope that helps. Well done everyone on your stamina.

    but just cant seem to get past this weight.

    Izzy, I’m 5’6 so 9st 5lb isn’t bad for me, was just hoping to get to 9st, so that I could have a little wiggle room.

    Lazy, well done for the 2lb, you can’t have much left to lose now.

    Patricia, Some take a few weeks to start losing weight, don’t let it demotivate you.

    Goosey, that was a very healthy dinner for a non fast day, apart from the wine of course.

    It was my weigh in today and I am really chuffed to report that I lost another 2 lb – I have lost a total of 6lb since starting this on 21st April. It’s been a steady journey but I have not struggled or ever felt like I was torturing myself, which is how I have felt on on diet plans.

    I now weigh 8 stone 9lb so am pretty much at my target weight. I am short (5 ft 1 lb) so I am going to keep going, in fact I could do this forever!

    THIS DOES WWORK EVERYONE – Don’t beat yourself up if you have the odd blip, you will get where you want to be if you are realistic and patient with your body.

    I have a question and I apologize if this has been discussed previously! Just joined the forum recently and haven’t had the time to sift thru all the excellent info and advice here. Question is…does it matter if you can’t stick to the same fast days every week? Monday usually works well for me, but with my family, work, etc., I have trouble scheduling the second weekly fast day. I am managing to get in 2 per week, but not consistent days.

    TapGypsy welcome to the forum. The beauty of the fast diet is the flexibility of it. As long as you do the 2 days with 500 cals (women) 600 (men) you should be successful no matter which days you decide to do it. Good luck

    Elaine,no I am afraid I have quite a bit of weight to go. Currently 9 stone 10lbs and would like to lose at least a 1 stone or a just over a stone. Currently 9 stone 10lbs, started at 10 stone 5lbs. Current weight is way too heavy for my height 5 foot 2 inches. Aiming for 1/2 stone at a time.
