Day 12 UK NFD đ
Woke up đ happy, so a good start, scales did not reflect that but hey ho. Another day, after massive gym sesh yesterday I realise I can put more effort in if I need to, will try and schedule that in more, I know I’m going to ache tomorrow though, keep getting stiff but just do a few stretches and that helps and the obvious DRINK MORE WATER.
@fatrabbit I think I know the answer about your cheese and losing weight still, apparently I watched a TV programme about it once and it said that cheese binds fat in your body and then excuse this but you poop it out. They THEY đdid tests and those who ate small portions of cheese lost more actual fat than those who didn’t. Triggered a memory when I read your post.
So cheese sandwich and water for me today. đđđť
@bigviking you sure are the poster person for ADF, might try this next week. Well done on you fab results.
@flourbaby I’m with you plan plan plan, military precision and decisions to be made ATM! We can do it. I’m not going up, but also not going anywhere, need to focus to get things moving again x
@lilymartin thanks x
Hello world, uk co down calling, day 12 nfd.
@fatrabbit well done đ, keep on keeping on. You like @bigviking will have names soon that wont reflect the person lol.
@pissupoosa hope you feel better soon try some Echinacea tho better at first signs. A. Vogel cold and flu one is the one I use.
@fatrabbit – I remember watching some BBC diet programmes a few years ago, and their research suggested that if 2 people had the same diet in terms of calories and fat content but one of them got most of their fat from dairy products, then they stored less fat….. I think it also had less effect on other things considered to negatively impact health too.
Day 12 – UK – NFD
There is definitely something in the air today @bigviking – my scales are up 0.1kg too despite two successful FDs this week and two good NFDs.
The challenge now is to keep strong over the weekend. And drink more water. Hate dairy though, so can’t be persuaded to eat cheese @lmrenfrey .
Day 11 : Cheshire, UK : NFD/CD (controlled day)
Day 12 : Cheshire, UK : NFD
My weight is starting to decrease again but I’m having to be very mindful each day. Drinking lots of water is helping to keep me focused. I’m drinking a glass of water every hour or so, depends if I’m in a meeting or driving but I’m definitely drinking over 2 litres of fluid each day. This needs to be my plan at the weekend as I don’t seem to drink much over the weekend. @coda – thank you for your motivational posts. I’m taking them on board.
@bigviking – Inspirational….well done on your 2st weight loss. Happy Dance! đ
@at – I just love your posts. You are very warm and kind. When I was in Spain, I saw a sign that included ‘AT’ and I immediately had heart-warming thoughts of my virtual friend.
@skinnylove – I had the same problem when trying to get back on the wagon. Several people asked me if I had lost weight when, in fact, I had gained. This, however, gave me license (so I thought) to indulge in the special offers on sweets and chocs đ
The problem is the Carb Dragon is unleashed, which means, not only weight gain but feeling bloated and increased cellulite! Also, I notice that I tire easily and my mood is lower than norm.
Anyway, seems like I’m back on the wagon albeit precariously.
@pissupoosa = thank you for the spreadsheet….impressive.
Happy Friday Everyone!
Hello again everyone,
Apologies for going AWOL but life has been pretty rough lately. I hope everyone is well and making good progress. I will catch up on posts later tonight.
My poor old dog has been very poorly and now had surgery, possible cancerous tumours. She is 13 years old but until now has always had excellent health. Shock about her condition then worry about surgery did not leave much time for fasting focus and subsequently gained. Sugary foods binge hasn’t helped anything, Why! But I am back on track now and hope to join you. I am on holiday next week so I need to be extra vigilant. Long coach trip, never good for eating bad foods. I will pack a nice salad picnic and some fruit.
Have a good weekend Guys
Day 12, Hampshire, UK – FD
Yesterday’s FD was fine except I was unusually hungry! I went all the way to 500 cals, which I don’t normally do.
However, I am glad I did this because last night I slept so well.
Normally I finish my day around 350 – 400 cals max and whilst I no longer sleep badly on a FD (due to eating a snack last thing and Magnesium supps) I don’t sleep super-well on a FD.
So I don’t know whether it is a co-incidence, but I am going to go for the full 500 cals next time and see if that helps give me that full-on deep sleep!
Anyway, today I am going for 800 cals in a window (16:8). I am liking it so far! What’s not to like about being allowed an extra 300 cals!
I personally find it easier to skip dinner than to skip breakfast, so I am very happy this morning as I’ve already had breakfast!
Good luck to everyone doing a FD day today :0)
Day 12 Newcastle UK NFD.
First food yesterday was some fresh pineapple it tasted absolutely gorgeous around 12 noon.
Evening meal was chicken jalfrezi with pilau rice and four poppadoms followed by ice cream and jelly for pudding.
Normally I would have totally pigged out on a huge portion it seems I have my portion sizes under control for the time being. Have a great day everybody and stay focused.đ
Day 10 â CARDIFF UK â NFD
Day 10 â CARDIFF UK â NFD
Day 10 â CARDIFF UK â FD
Starting Weight : 159.0lbs
Todayâs Weight : 157.3lbs
Target Weight : 154.0lbs
Good liquid FD yesterday. I was planning to wait until next week for my next FD, but felt I had to redress the pralines and cream ice cream incident I had a couple of days ago.
Back on track now and at the lowest weight I’ve been for many years, though still a long way to go. Planning to try and stay controlled this weekend.
Off for my first coffee of the day, trying to drink more water so try and delay the first cup of a real drink.
Weekend is nearly here.
Hello again (11.4 1/4 158.25) memo to ones self keep doing what I’m doing!
Here is another post from January that again may resonate with some and I feel worth while repeating.
Sometimes we turn to food not because we are physically hungry, but because something is âeating usâ emotionally. Many of us were taught that food can âsoothe a mood,â and that by eating something when weâre upset, we will find comfort. Can you remember being a child when you fell down and scraped your knee and your mom gave you a cookie to make you feel better?
Even into adulthood, we continue to use food to soothe our moods, only now with negative consequences: We realize that we still havenât dealt with what was bothering us in the first place after weâve consumed an entire tub of ice cream, plus weâve eaten way more calories than our body needs. And we usually end up getting mad at ourselves for overeating. This sets us up for a vicious cycle of stuffing feelings with food (and thus not dealing with them), possible weight gain or excessive exercise and self-recrimination ⌠until the cycle starts all over again. How frustrating!
Three emotional states in particular often lead to bouts of emotional eating: sadness, anxiety and anger.
Sad Eating
Letâs face itâwhen heartbreak hits, eating a tub of ice cream seems like a good idea. A bit of sweeteness to drown out your sorrow. But before you know it, youâre caught in a self-perpetuating negative cycle and it can be very difficult to get out of it once itâs started. You eat because youâre sad, then you feel even more blue because youâve eaten so much; this can lead to a âwhat-the-heckâ attitude, increasing the likelihood of overeating when the next bout of the blues hits.
Healthy alternatives:
1. Talk it out. If youâre feeling blue, it probably has something to do with an upsetting incident that has happened and you may feel a whole lot better to get it off your chest by calling up a friend and sharing what youâre feeling.
2. Exercise. Research has shown over and over again that one of the best ways of battling the blues is by moving your body and getting your heart pumping. Even doing 30 minutes of moderate exercise boosts the âfeel-goodâ chemicals in the brain.
3. Boo Hoo it out. This is the non-technical term for having a âpity party for one.â Really indulge yourself here: Take a hot bath and light candles, listen to sad music, and cry until you run out of tears. Youâll feel a whole lot better after.
Anxious Eating
Many of us eat in an attempt to lower anxiety and a way of self-medicating ourselves. In fact, research has shown that carbohydrate-rich foods actually boost serotonin levels, a chemical that makes you feel calm. This explains why we often reach for carbohydrate-rich comfort foods when weâre stressed.
Healthy alternatives:
1. Take a nap or go to bed early. Research has shown that people who are well-rested are less susceptible to anxiety and stress, and are better at resisting the urge to overeat. Strive to get at least 8 ½ hours of sleep each night to reduce the urge to overeat in your waking hours.
2. Do something relaxing and calming. We all have different ways of relaxing. The next time you feel stressed and anxious and instinctively turn to food, resist the urge to run to the cupboard or fridge and, instead, practice one of the relaxing activities you enjoy the most.
Angry Eating
Often we will eat instead of focusing on what is âeating us.â We stuff our anger down with food to cope but, unfortunately, this doesnât get rid of our anger. It simply buries it and if we donât deal with it, it will keep popping up until we do. To make matter worse, we hurt our bodies by overeating and then add the feelings of guilt and shame to the anger we started with.
Healthy alternatives:
A way to get out of the âangry-eating trapâ is to delay eating (even 10 minutes will do). Sit down, take a deep breath, and tune into what youâre really feeling and what you need to do to let go of your anger. Ask yourself the following questions:
What happened today that may have made me angry?
Why did that event stir up angry feelings?
What do I need to do in order to let go of this anger and feel peaceful
Have a good weekend everyone and enjoy your journey.
@debster251 – maybe your little veggie garden will be ok as the weather has changed – just in time for the weekend but can’t complain the garden needs a good water – fingers crossed. What part of Portugal are you going to?
Day 12, not so sunny Belfast, FD
Mornin’ everyone (or whatever time of day it is with you)
Had a lovely few days with my sister, with lots of laughter and hugs. Now she’s gone,I have to get ready to go to Portugal. I have a mental conundrum. I have to balance the ‘eating up’ mindset and the fasting one. My OH and I both like no food waste. I have to clear out the fridge, which is quite full, and fast at the same time. Luckily most of it is fruit and veggies, so I will be eating lots of leaves, celery and tomatoes, so that is today’s food taken care of, and tomorrow I’ll be eating lots of bananas!
@bert my heart goes out to you. We have complicated relationships with our parents. My mum was horrible to my sister (actually my stepsister and not her real daughter), who took the lion’s share of her care in the last few years of her life because she was nearer than me. She sniped at me a bit and picked holes in what I did if it wasn’t the way she wanted it/to her taste, but not the bullying my lovely sister took. To make it worse, my brother, who never came to see her or even had the time to phone, was her blue-eyed boy to the end. Put it behind you and try not to get anxious. If it is as a result of her condition, then she can’t help it. You and your sister must support each other with lots of love and hugs. Take care. Xo
I have just spent 4 days with my sister, and we have done our usual – talk through all those experiences from our past, and catch up with what our kids are doing. It’s a kind of therapy.
So yes, Coda, thank you for the ’emotional eating’ post. It was just for me. So true!@Coda, @skinnylove, I have exactly the same problem. Also, when the scales are at their lowest, I see it as a license to go mad. Am hanging there by my fingertips at the momentđ
Great results @big Viking. I must take some motivation from your amazing results.
@thank you @chumi for putting me on the list
@lumat well done for those stats – stay strong!
@jonnyR would recommend waxing rather than shaving – less bristles with regrowth but perhaps a little more painful! Lol!
@pissupoosa I love the colours on the spreadsheet. I am a visual learner and that has totally motivated me.
Okeydokey good luck with the dentist! When it’s over, you’ll be so glad!
@flourbaby saw Dr M’s programme last night. Good watching. Did you see he one on stress!
Thank you @yolina. Have written that on a sticky note and stuck it to my fridge.
@jojo58 so sorry to hear about your dog.
Well, last nights rain has watered in my seedlings, but dampened my spirits a little. It’s funny how you get used to waking up to sunshine!
Have a good day everyone, stay strong!
Day 12 NFD Portugal
60.2 kg
Getting so close to the 59s .. hopefully next week I will make it there.
@debster251 – where in Portugal are you going? We live up in the north (near Porto) but have also lived in Algarve. Both very beautiful in different ways.
@coda – I get those holes in my t shirts all the time. Sometimes after just wearing 3-4 times. I wear jeans a lot and I am convinced it’s the button rubbing against the Tshirt as that is where all the holes always are. It is very frustrating. It doesn’t seem to happen with anyone else in the family.
Day 12 Maine NFD
Good morning all! Successful FD yesterday, but only lost the .8 I had gained on NFD. In reading your posts, I realized that I haven’t been drinking enough water. I had about 4 cups of tea, but that isn’t enough. So, I shall increase that today, be mindful of what I’m eating & hopefully get a walk in. I was well intentioned walkwise when I got home from work yesterday, but fixed some tea first & fell asleep! Hate that 6:30 shift – at least last night I slept. Weds nite I kept waking up – afraid I was oversleeping!
Speaking of which, time to mosey! Will check back later….make it a successful day everybody!
Day 12……Florida…..FD
Yesterday, I had a very nice controlled day, I actually stayed with in my TDEE. It took some doing on my part, seeing I was resigned to only semi count calories on my FD. After my two month plateau, I really had to re evaluate what I was doing and make some small changes to get the maximum benefit. I think it’s working as far as I can tell because when I weigh in from. My travels, I was up almost 7lbs. Just by getting back to this WOL, and staying with my TDEE, I’m down almost 5lbs.
I did want to Thank you for your kind words with my mom. While, I have been subject to her mouth for a majority of my life, I have learned to overcome and not allow it to affect me as a person. However, my sister has not had to experience it until now. In all her 67 years, so she understandably is heart broken which in turn breaks my heart. No one should be subject to that regardless of how the other person feels or a disease is effecting them. It changes a person sometimes for the good or for the bad, I just don’t want it to change by beautiful and caring sister for the worse.
As for the shirts, those dang holes have ruin many of my favorite shirts. Someone once told me it was because of my counter top.
As for sleeping, try using lavender oil. You can add a few drops to your pillow, use it in a nice bath before bed. My sister is a firm believer in it.
Well, I’m off. Hi Ho….Hi Ho, Its off to work I go……….
Chin up Princess…… your crown is slipping!
Day 11, Mountaintop PA, FD
Day 12, Mountaintop PA, NFD 147.9 New Low Weight!
Enjoyed a calm FD yesterday including protein waffle with fruit for breakfast, small cup NF yogurt and clementine for snack, dinner salad with rotisserie chicken for protein. Probably about 800 calories.
Good walks this week keep me limber and energized. Still cool here in PA so several layers needed. Everything is very green and spring flowering trees and shrubs so bright and long lasting.
147.9 new low weight for me. It is always easier for me to lose in the spring, when I am my most active outside. It is really fun to fit into clothes that have been not worn in decades. I love the classic styles so the vintage pieces are beautiful.
I have been on IF Fast 5:2 for nearly 5 months after maintaining for one year and have lost 10.4 lbs total in that time so about 2 lbs a month. The rhythm of this WOL is sustainable for me. Stick with it fellow fasters. We are all winning with this healthy program.
Day 12 UK NFD Doing a good job at maintaining but finding it difficult to give that bit extra to enable weight loss I know this is the time I need to dig deep and refocus as I tend to get disheartened and quit , reading everyone’s posts really does help I aiming for a controlled few days then fast on Monday and try and get some momentum going
Day 12 second post.
@coda should have read your post before we hit the road this morning.
I have sad eaten, mad eaten, glad eaten. What a day!
In fact I have eaten everyone on this threads’ emotions, all today!!! Nuff said.
Suffice to say, when one eats one’s body weight in chocolate and chips and forgets to drink enough water, it is a recipe for about an 8000 calories NFD.
Will try to better tomorrow , but we have come to the city for a …. FOOD Fair.
To all those coping with family problems , thoughts and hugs.
Day 12 – Scotland- NFD
Today I was only 100gr heavier than yesterday. I feel a bit sad today (just to sympathise with other friends here, it’s because of my mum…), so after a big and not so healthy lunch with tortelli and cheese, I was about to grab one of those lindor. I had some Brazilian nuts instead. Definitely too many (and more calories compared to one chocolate), but with this mood the chocolate could have been the first of many….
I’ll try to have a light dinner.
Day 12 – FIN – NFD
Yesterday’s energy intake was about 550 kcal (I was aiming for 500 (a pear + pecan nuts to break the fast and a salad for dinner) but slipped in a square of dark chocolate since I still felt hungry after the surprisingly delicious (I was a bit uncertain about the outcome since I substituted the recipe’s rice noodles with quinoa, the spring onions with leek and the cilantro with cilantro paste and parsley) yet apparently not that filling Thai style prawn salad I made for dinner). I’ve completed two long (16 h & 19 h) fasts during the past 42 hours and was starting to feel a bit funny. I therefore decided to not go for a B2B today and I’m also contemplating whether or not to altogether skip the third fast day I’d planned for the week, but I’ll have to see how I feel about that tomorrow.
On another note, my rings have started to slip off my fingers. I just returned back home and realized the one I’d been wearing wasn’t on my finger. Found it in my glove. Suppose I’ll have to start wearing my rings on my middle finger from now on.
Regarding the water intake discussion – there are calculators all over the web that help you estimate the amount of water you should have in a day. I’ve gotten figures ranging from 2.4 to 2.7 liters with my stats. Presumably that number also includes the liquids you get from solid foods (about 1 liter). Still, I tend to strive to drink approximately that amount (2.5 to 3.0 liters) of water in a day, especially on FDs (when you don’t get much water from food), since I think it’s good for my health and the condition of my skin.
@happymargo Keeping my fingers crossed for good results on Monday.
@pissupoosa Hoping for your quick recovery. I’m also happy to hear that taking care of the spreadsheet is not a burden for you. I don’t think the rest of us can make any changes on the sheet, though – at least to me, the spreadsheet is view only.
@bert1802 I agree, no one should be subjected to that kind of verbal abuse especially when trying to help regardless of how bad one feels. But I’ve seen it happen as well – when the illness takes over your entire life, you tend to vent your frustration on your nearest and dearest without thinking about the effect it has on them. I’m happy you’re not letting it affect you, and I too hope your sister won’t suffer very much from it.
Day 12, London, UK, FD (again I think)
167.4lbs this morning, I donât normally post my weight until the end of the challenge, but âŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚ 12st forever be gone!!!!!!!!! My 4th FD in a row but not strictly 500cal days, I planned to allow myself a max of 800 and so far, so good. Planning a NFD tomorrow before deprivation sets in!!!
@coda, no warm feet with the magnesium oil, just initial shedding of dry skin I didnât know was there, also had the same on my palms, I assume because I rubbed it in with my hands!!
@pissupoosa, hope you feel better soon, still trying to shake the remnants of my cold âŚâŚâŚ.after 2 weeks, such a pain!!!
@debster251, enjoyed the programme last night, although OH balked at the idea of no alcohol, and would rather toss & turn all night!!!! The one on stress was interesting too, I deal with stress and anxiety with niacin, which is a âBâ vitaminâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚ powerful stuff!!!
Keep the faith everyone, and enjoy the control and willpower we didn’t know we had!!!
Catching up on reading and posting:

Day 12 US FD (hopefully)
I’m glad I had our groups awesome posts to read… keeping me grounded and focused. I still have more to read for later today. đâ¨
A Shout out to all the Mothers that will be celebratingâ¨đ Mother’s Day this Sunday with your families! (In the US it’s Mother’s Day this Sunday.)
Thank-you so much for all the kind wishes, hugs and prayers for relief of my PTSD and dental appointment, from each and everyone of you. It helped sooo much. I did go to the dentist. Hoping to have my tooth filled. @at I took your advice and literally did the hypnosis and “tapping” to rid myself of some of the anxiety and trauma while waiting in the waiting room. đThe dentist was purposefully very kind. đBut he said my tooth was completely cracked right down the middle. Weird the roots are still intact and no cavity. Interesting, he said I must be brushing and flushing my teeth after eating every time, which I am because literally no decay. I’m pretty sure the fasting has helped to prevent worse tooth problems. He referred me to an oral surgeon, where I will have to have that tooth pulled. I have to have an implant and then a crown. There are 2 other teeth that had already been pulled a few years ago. I will have to have the implants for also. Guess what, I’ve decided to wait till after our 2.5 week trip to WV, NC, San Diego, CA US. He didn’t advise it, but I wouldn’t be able to pack, keep up with home schooling for the twins and make the travel including car and flights if I was recovering from the surgeries. So I will just stay away from crunchy food for now. It actually leaves the soup, some types of chicken, seafood, veggies that I’m supposed to eat any way. I will set up the appt. for when we get back the 3rd week in June. One step at a time. Even if it isn’t the step I wanted, I will get there. Thank-you sooo much for your support. Our group means the world đ to me.đâ¨đđ
This morning I weighed 155.6 lbs down < 2 lbs from May 5. If I make it through a FD today I might lose the .6 lbs when I weigh tomorrow morning. It’s funny, weird how when I started I was losing more lbs. kg. per week. I’m not sure why that happens. But I’ll take 2 or @ 3lbs losing a week if I can get it.
@skinnylove I’m there with you Holding your hand.đ¤â¨â¨â¨đ¤đťâ¨đ¤đťâ¨â¨â¨possibly pick another way to reward yourself when somebody compliments you. I know being around other people who don’t get it and aren’t necessarily supportive is hard for me and I can see it can be hard for you. I would think we all have to be careful with controlled eating or controlled spending. Maybe buy yourself a newoutfit you like if someone praises you for your weightloss! Instead of eating a cookie or something. Maybe build in non food rewards for yourself, without letting what others say have as much of an effect on you? Just thinking. đ¤ This coming month in June, I’m going to be around a Wedding party and quite a few family food and drink gatherings. I will have to try to adapt a strategy. I’ve had to avoid gluten for 7 years now. I basically just stay away from it or choose something healthier. My family thinks it’s an inconvenience but I and my daughter get physically ill if we eat bakery products that have wheat in them. I đWhitney Houston. Now I know I’m not the only one who here’s songs in my head during the day. I love the way you put motivational words to them. â¨
@coda Yes remember to keep doing what you are doing. I love reading your blog posts. â¨đ
@basyjames I text myself the link of the May Challenge. Basically go the last page of posts on the May Challenge then copy and paste into a text to my self. Then I have it when I’m ready to read posts. I’m glad @coda explained to you how to review all posts by some one, in this case @pissupoosa
@pissupoosa â¨I’m hoping your cold goes away and you feel better soon. đ¤§Thank-you again for all your work. I said it before and I’ll say it again your spreadsheet is awesome. I like what you did to scroll through the rows while still keeping the names in the column on the left. Is that google spreadsheets?
@jojo58 That sounds like it was emotionally stressing. I hope your dog is doing better now. A nice salad đĽ picnic and fruit sounds like a great plan.

Day 12 – Cumbria UK – NFD
đHAPPY MOTHER’S DAY FOR ALL OUR FRIENDS IN THE US đ
Yesterday ended up a FD 800cals after all @pissupoosa – Weight this morning 53.5kg/117.9lbs – this gives me some leeway (1.5kg below my target) for my visit down south from Sunday until Friday where Fasting may not be an option but 16:8 days should be easy enough to do……as some have said PLAN…….
Lovely walk this morning with my usual Friday group – very warm and some sunshine but now overcast and threathning to rain – it is much needed.
@lynzm – very organised đ
@skinnylove – some great advice given – I try to remember how much better I feel about myself and how my health has improved with losing the weight and following this WOL to keep me maintaining just below my target weight.
@pissupoosa – hope you feel better soon đˇ
@happymargo – hope that you get a good report from your blood tests on Monday – hugs x
@fatrabbit – đ§is all I’m saying đ
@goldensun – đ¤ Thank you
@jojo58 – so sorry about your fur baby – hope she recovers from surgery to enjoy some quality time with you đ
@pashaw and @steffieagle – well done on reaching your lowest weight for years – this WOL works đ
@coda – thank you for sharing such inspirational posts x
@okeydokey – glad to hear that support from all your cyber friends on this group helped – I think you are being very sensible in planning to get the surgeries done when you life is more settled as you will also feel a bit calmer so that will help – do stay away from crunchy food as you say!!! and one step at a time x

taken from a post in our November challenge may be interesting to some on this challenge
indulging in delicious treats is good. Indulging in food guilt about it is the exact opposite. You might know the feeling: That sinking pit in your stomach after having a donut, cheeseburger, or even adding an extra sprinkle of feta to your salad. Then, of course, the steely resolve not to give in to your craving next time. It may seem like restriction is the only way to stay on track. But actually, if you want to lose weight, being too strict about every morsel that passes your lips can sabotage your goalsânot to mention your self-esteem.
Before jumping in, itâs important to keep in mind that health looks different for every person. If you want to lose weight, what works for you might not work for others, and vice versa. And if you have a history of disordered eating, it may make sense to talk to your doctor before starting a new eating plan. Even if you donât want to lose weight, itâs worth trying to kick food guilt to the curb, because it doesnât do anyone any favors.
Itâs one thing if after eating something and feeling sluggish or ill, you decide youâd like to provide your body with different kinds of nutrients. But feeling guilty is a natural, ingrained response to doing something bad. Therein lies the root of the problem. âI see people calling food âgoodâ or âbadâ every day,â Abby Langer, R.D., owner of Abby Langer Nutrition in Toronto, tells SELF. This practice is harmful because it moralizes what you eat in a way thatâs all too easy to apply to yourself. âIt makes people feel like they are good or bad based on their food choices, but thatâs not the case,â Langer says. âItâs important to understand what this kind of thinking really does.â
One of the most common responses to food guilt is to spiral out of control, Laura Cipullo, R.D., C.D.N., C.D.E., C.E.D.R.D., owner of Laura Cipullo Whole Nutrition, tells SELF. âIf people have a cupcake, they think theyâve blown it all and eat even more,â she says. (Some call this the âwhat-the-hell effect.â) This catastrophizing can lead to taking in way more calories than you would if you just let yourself have something tasty without it being so emotionally charged, thus potentially making it so you canât lose weight.
As Langer explains, no food is good or bad. There are just things that are healthy for your individual body, then others that arenât as healthy for your individual body. âYou can reframe it by thinking, âThis isnât the healthiest choice, but nobody makes the healthiest choices all the time,ââ Langer recommends. Cipullo adds that you could go the route of thinking of some foods as nutrient-dense and others as less nutrient-dense.
Instead of dividing food into good and bad camps, Cipullo suggests reminding yourself that in life, all foods fit. You can incorporate everything in moderation, which is not only a sustainable way to live, but also a kinder way to treat yourself. This also helps ward off the deprivation that comes with trying to avoid food guilt, she explains, and makes it possible to have food that pleases your taste buds while still losing weight.
âI tell my clients thereâs no such thing as perfection, so donât even try,â Langer says. âOnce you accept that and know the brownie or ice cream is part of normal eating, you know nothing bad is going to happen.â Unlike an all or nothing attitude, thinking this way helps you rein in the habit of believing that since you already indulged, you might as well continue to be âbadâ and let all healthy eating fly out the window for the foreseeable future.
When you view food as fuel for your body, some that fuels it in the most ideal way and some that doesnât but isnât inherently evil, you can get closer to your goalsâand be happier overall. âThereâs no one âperfectâ diet everyone should follow,â Cipullo says. âEverybody has to find whatâs right for their body.â
So no more saying I have been good or bad!
Day 12, Belfast, NFD
FD yesterday got a wee bit tedious towards the end. Feel like I took it out on the hubby, bless him, lol. Bished and boshed around with the vacuum cleaner and huffed and puffed. And then I just went to bed at 9pm just to get the day over with (and I couldn’t bear watching MasterChef with all the glorious food in high-def!). But the cleaning probably burned off a few kcals and I had a good 30 min walk at lunch and a full on 60-length swim after work… so hopefully all that has helped get the scales moving in the right direction.
I do think, though, that I’m not going to get too obsessed with the scales. It’s all good work for the body and soul đ
But I may get obsessed with the cheese incidents @fatrabbit and @lmrenfrey lol! I’m loving this experiment. Maybe that’s why the French appear to stay so slim and healthy …their mega-cheeseboards yum!
Have a good one everyone!
Thanks for those posts @coda. Very useful information, and helpful for motivation and avoiding guilt and massive over-indulgence when the inevitable slip ups happen.
re holes in clothes I found this on internet – it would seem quite common but investigation is still ongoing.
Holes in clothes.I get tiny holes in the same place on most of my tops(front at belly button area) nobody else in house has these holes. I assumed this was moth holes but remained puzzled that always in the same area (never back of clothes/sleeves etc.So I did war with every type of moth repellant
HOWEVER.Ii went to shop yesterday and noticed more holes in a top..I went and bought a new T shirt from Debenhams as felt scruffy shopping with my holed T shirt. The surprise came 4 hours later as when I returned home there were the holes in the brand new top that I had worn 4 hrs only!! and not been near a wardrobe.
So my stance is that the cause is to do with jeans(marks and spencer per una style) that I always wear in different colours for years.(The holes have been happening for years and I have spent hundreds replacing clothes, bought plastic covers for all my clothes and moth sprays etc to no effect.
The culprit is the buttons on the jeans(maybe its the friction or the nickel content but I am now certain these jean buttons cause the problem
I never have holes in jackets, dresses , skirts..just t shirts and jumpers all at belly button area and always clothes I where with jeans!!
I resorted to putting clothes straight into zip up bags with a peg at the top to mothe proof but the holes kepy coming.
PLEASE CAN YOU LADIES CHECK IF YOU GET HOLES IN TOPS IN SAME AREA WHEN WEARING WITH JEANS FROM M &S..THIS COULD BE A BREAK THROUGH IN TO WHY SO MANY WOMEN HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM
I don’t wear jeans from M&S so I don’t think this person is on the right track. I’m still looking for an answer lol
Day 12–Albuquerque–NFD
Oops…meant to try for 800 calories at dinner last night and somehow ended up at nearly 1600. How did that happen? Anyway, no gold star on the calendar for May 11.
Does anyone else have problems with nausea on FDs or after breaking fast? Iâm drinking water like crazy so it canât be dehydrationâŚ
@fatrabbit: I’m so glad we can eat cheese. Life without cheese is no life at all, don’t you agree?
@happymargo: everything okay in the blood department?
@coda: the magnesium oil does burn a little bit (I put it on my neck last night as well as the feet/legs). That was actually something the label warned about. The warm feeling, I thought, was from massaging it in. Itâs nice, whatever it is.
@pissupoosa: take care of yourself.
@coda – Re holes in clothes – I have the same problem â I think it happens either from the belt buckle if I wear one or from the button at the top of my jean/trousers, and it does not matter what make the trousers are. I have ruined some lovely tops that way!!!! I now try to wear a thin spaghetti strap vest under my nice tops and the problem has disappeared. It does not happen when I wear a flat front trousers with the zip as a side fastening.
Day 12 – USA (San Diego, CA) – NFD
Military service at the cemetary was very moving. I am so glad I was able to get here to speak about my brother and be here for others who love him.
My cold is not helping me, though, as it has taken away any appetite. I don’t know just why, mostly because I seldom get an upset stomach with a cold. Hopefully this will move fast.
Hang in there, everyone.
Day 12 – Toronto – NFD
Does everyone have a bounce in their step on Fridays? đ Even though I usually end up working on the weekends (I’m a lawyer) there’s just something about the buzz in the air on a Friday. So, yesterday was going well until about 5 p.m. when I felt super tired and succumbed to eating a sea salt chocolate chip cookie (300 cals) with my afternoon tea, aka I was too full to have my planned dinner of chicken and veggies and ate a small snack of cheese with pita crackers and salami. The cookie wasn’t even that good… I don’t know why I do this to myself… I make poor decisions when tired.
Woke up this morning and banged out an upper body workout with sore muscles to boot! Excited for this evening as I’m going to a local spa for their water circuit with 3 girlfriends. I’ve tried to think of other “treat activities” to do with friends on Fridays rather than drinking&eating from 5 pm till midnight and spa-ing feels equally indulgent in another way đ
