Enjoy you GOR break. π P

Morning/evening all,
After all but disappearing my cold has re-invented itself as a chesty cough :grrr:
The good thing is that I feel fine so it’s off to the gym again this morning and then hit the supermarket which I don’t like doing during school holidays but the cupboards are bare. I’ll lay in the sauna for an axtra 5 minutes to ensure I’m relaxed enough to cope π
Have a good one everybody π
Thanks Purple π
Jo, sorry to hear about the gut problems, all part and parcel of surgery due to medication and inactivity. I hope things start to improve soon. Enjoy the book club, it’ll do you good to get out and talk to people for a couple of hours.
The downside of bordering on thin is feeling the cold. I’ve been to the gym this morning, done the shopping, had something to eat and a hot drink and cannot get warm so have resorted to putting the heating on. Warmer weather cannot arrive soon enough!
Good to hear you are recovering, Jojo. Not sure that ‘1000 splendid suns’ would help me to recover from an operation, or escape.
I would say that of all the books that I have read recently, that that book hit me the most heavily. I loved it but was not prepared for the ways things went.
Just finished the 2.5th day of the BSD- 19:5,and a few km on the treadmill. Too cold to do the 10k steps outside!
Sorry about your cold, Amazon.
XX Wiwi
Hi all,
I already started this post twice and lost it due to internet problems. How annoying.
Jojo, glad your body is healing although it sounds really tough without the painkillers.
My week is going quite well. I did not manage to do a proper fast but kept my cals around 800 on Mon and Tue. Yesterday was a little less strict with a big dinner but today I aim to eat 800 max again. It’s a busy day at work so luckily not much time to eat.
Unfortunately my arthrits is quite bad in the mornings at the moment and I should really take meds. But they make me sick if taken on an empty stomach so it would mean eating a little something early in the day which I hate because after that it doesn’t really feel like fasting anymore. Well, that’s just how it is.
Have a good day everyone.
Hi Wiwi,
I went to the park with my niece and great nephew and we managed 45 minutes before giving in to the warmth of a coffee shop. It is very cold for April with March style blustery winds and sudden rain showers.
Keep us posted on how you cope and what you think of the BSD.
I’ve managed over 10,000 steps every day for the past 7 including a massive 17,600 yesterday as I’m making a real effort to keep moving and do something every day now that my back and hip are both better.
I’ve just read an extremely interesting article in the Guardian regarding scientists refusing to believe evidence presented in the early 1970s and even before that, regarding sugar being the villain rather than fat/cholesterol. I find it shocking that evidence based information has been suppressed for so long because certain eminent scientists (plus the food industry etc) refused to believe that previous studies and information had been proved incorrect and in some cases study groups/areas carefully selected and some factors ignored in order to obtain the result. It isn’t news to me or to many of you but shocking all the same.
Shaylee, if you need to eat in order to prevent side effects from medication you should not be feeling bad about it. Trial and error should help you work out how little you can get away with in order to prevent sickness until such times that you don’t need the medication.

Hi Amazon
There is a documentary out there that shows that the Brit who wrote Pure White and Deadly about the effects of sugar, in the 1970s, was drummed out of his job, denied future funding, and couldn’t go on with his research. His son is interviewed and says that he is glad his dad has been vindicated by today’s research. However, his dad was very sad that there had to be an epidemic of diabetes type 2 before his work could be looked at again.
In this mornings papers in Oz there is research from QUT showing that sugar is addictive, just like cocaine and other drugs. It affects dopamine levels. We need more as time goes on to get the same effect.
cheers, Bay π
Morning/evening all,
I know a fair amount about Robert Atkins. I followed the diet and successfully lost weight but as Purple points out, not enough fibre soterrible constipation and stomach cramps were unfortunate side effects, and of course I didn’t change my eating habits so pile the weight back on.
As for John Yudkin who Bay is talking about, he first spoke about sugar being the culprit in 1957 and he was treated so badly, his career ruined, that no-one else who agreed with him dared stick their head above the parapet until now.
Sugar is definitely addictive and the problem with that is that most addicts have no idea how much and how often they are consuming it because it is in so many foodstuffs.
Here is a link to the article I read
http://www.theguardian.com/society/2016/apr/07/the-sugar-conspiracy-robert-lustig-john-yudkin
Dry and sunny this morning and the cold wind has dropped so it should be warmer. Unfortunately I now have a rip roaring chest infection, so won’t be going very far π
Have a good one everybody π
Well done Tasa, that is a great achievement when life has been getting in the way.
I gave up bread for Lent as I have no control when there is any in the house. I madea loaf on Easter Saturday and ate the last slice yesterday, which is a success in my book, but I am going to try to limit it to weekends only.
Amazon, I have just finished reading your article above, and am absolutely gobsmacked that as of LAST MONTH Nina Teicholz, who wrote about “the case for the inadequacy of the scientific advice that underpins the Dietary Guidelines” of the low-fat establishment was demonised and uninvited to participate in a panel discussion on nutritional science. So we are still fighting against the mainstream π So enlightenment has still to strike.
Be well, Jojo xx
Hi Barata,
It is incredible that nutritionists, scientists, researchers, doctors etc are so unwilling to admit that previous opinions on what constitutes a good diet are incorrect due to omitting to consider all the facts, especially when on looking at some of the studies it was obvious that the common factor was sugar.
One only has to look at the way third world countries are seeing an enormous rise in the number of their populations affected by diabetes as they gain access to the type of foodstuffs available elsewhere.
The other fact that astounds me is their decision to ignore the low rates of heart disease in countries such as France and Germany despite the huge amount of saturated fat consumed by the majority of the population.
It also makes me wonder why I’ve been swallowing statins for 10 years…..
Hi Amazon:
If you have not seen it, this lecture was given over 2 years ago and references research going back to the 1980s. It is nice to know that the higher your cholesterol levels, the longer you live! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QetsIU-3k7Y
Amazon,
So sorry to hear you’ve finally succumbed to a chest infection, particularly when it looked as though you were dodging it! Hopefully it won’t linger long or impede your progress too much.
Jo,
I hope you’re on the mend. Sorry to hear your recovery hasn’t been as quick or painless as you’d hoped. I’ve had surgery several times, and been prescribed those unpleasant painkillers, but luckily have never needed them. Sounds like a lucky escape!
I’ve done a 24 hour fast today, without caloric restriction, inspired by Jason Fung’s latest. I’ve not read his book ‘The Obesity Code’ yet, but it looks promising (thanks Apricot for posting this on another thread!):
I’ve been finding I’m massively hungry on the day after a low calorie fast, so it will be interesting to see how I react after a ‘normal’ meal. And of course how it compares to a 500 cal fast weight-wise!
Hi everyone,
Happy and Jojo,
Thanks for your sympathy for my glorified cold. Complaining about it is part of the treatment π
I’ve succumbed to sugar free cough syrup as my chest and throat are sore from coughing, but the list of ingredients resembles a script from everyone’s worst nightmare π¨
The most annoying thing is that I had to abandon my workout on Thursday and give the gym a miss on Friday due to the attention I was gaining when giving more than a passable impression of coughing up my lungs π
Simco, thanks for the link.
Happy, that article is excellent and I shall download the book from my namesake website.
Jojo, glad to hear you are on the mend and feeling a little better. Knowing that you’ve lost some weight albeit for the second time must make you feel that you are getting somewhere. I seem to have hit a plateau after losing 12lbs since 8th Feb, but I’m not going to worry about it.
Have a good one everybody π
Hi fast trackers
Interesting articles appearing. Thanks, Happy, Simcoeluv and Amazon. Food for thought so to speak.
Happy, I am often hungry after a fast, but not in the morning. I did a fast yesterday on the BSD, so running on quite low fuel level. I got the shakes and today I can smell the acetone. I think I will buy the book by Jason Lang.
Jojo, glad you are emerging from the post surgery. Great how your daughter is getting her life together in NZ. I will be there in January, so very happy to meet up with you and Barata. My daughter is moving to Santiago in Chile next week, so I will be in London less frequently sadly. Our children do complicate our lives. I agree with what you said about “1000 splendid suns”, but found it traumatic. It is however not too far removed from the reality. I haven’t read the sequel, but gave it to a daughter and should get it back to read.
Tasa, great progress!
Amazon, I hope the chesty cold is subsiding. Your article is a marathon and I read it out loud to OH.
RT, thanks for the laughs. BTW I am spiritually in NZ but in France for a few weeks.
Shaylee, is your arthritis osteo? I find mine improves with fasting.
Well, I have already started with Cider vinegar in water (5ml) and I even like it. I’d probably prefer red wine, but this is a substitute.
After 5 days on the BSD, and reading the forum posts, I find that our journey is similar, but having to contend with Diabetes 2 is difficult. They seem to have a mixed reaction from their GPs. An Insight program was on the site and I watched that.
I think you talked about a live meeting with Michael Moseley in Oz, Purple. I half wondered if you would be on this Insight.
The recipes in the BSD book are interesting, but quite involved. There is a wide range of ingredients necessary, and I have spent β¬170 getting them. I find that preparing is time-consuming. I made a pizza today with a base of cauliflower rice, ground almonds, a tiny bit of parmesan and egg base. If it were summer, I’d skip all the processing and eat salad and taste the vges as they really are. But it was very good with passata, olives, onion and a tiny bit of mozarella. And warming.
But I have lost about 600g since Tuesday so it’s good news(4K calorie deficit)
I am not sure whether we need to do this BSD, as we fast, but I need to get back to first principles, daily weighing and sustained fasting. For the present I will stick to it. I want to be on maintenance by 30 June.
I looked at Lorne on google earth, Nama and Purple and I went there once. It’s a beautiful coastline
Have a lovely afternoon/night/morning whereever you are.

I know Nicky is ok Amazon, but wonder about AO and ML??? Where are you girls?
Glad to hear most of you are swimming along nicely, except for you, Wi! Living in France and not drinking red? I’m with the others. Had a nice smooth Hunter red to keep my feet going well into the night last night. I think it lubricates the joints too π
I’ve ordered 2 copies of The Obesity Code …one to educate my GP. P
Hi all
I didn’t want to worry you PVE. I’m still hanging in by a thread and reading all the posts just find it hard to respond on my phone which is where I read the emails from the posts π and found it very difficult to fast while home while looking for work as I became quite anxious as time went on and all responses were negative (basically over qualified). Luckily the people I have found work with are forward thinking as the work I currently have will be progressed to a more challenging one later just they’re not quite ready for that yet.
Weight wise I am not losing but also not gaining and I know what I need to do and now I’m back at work I will be restarting my schedule for fasting this coming week and therefore feel more comfortable responding either early morning or late afternoon as I have an early start at work.
Re ML I could be wrong but I think she had trouble getting internet connection with her move to the country area.
I agree with RTs eating quote π
Chat later AO xx
Good morning all.
Apologies for being MIA for some time – life gets complicated on occasions.
Haven’t read all the posts I’ve missed but glad to hear Jo that you have finally had your op but sorry recovery is slower than you’d hoped. Amazon, hope your cold is finally succumbing to the complaining ‘treatment’. Also glad to hear you have found some work AO – we all need something to get up in the morning for.
Fasting and living going well for me, averaging about 750g/week, just doing the doable. The main change is (mostly) not having anything to eat between meals on non-FDs and if hunger pangs strike, using the same strategies I would on a FD – not exactly rocket science but I AM a slow learner! π
Take care all and keep up the good work. n xxx
Thanks Nicky and AO for popping in with an update.
Maintaining is an important skill, even if you haven’t reached goal yet. You’ll be on the right track when you do. βΊ
Glad you now have work AO and the future is looking brighter.
Keep up the fasts and limited snacks, both of you. The rewards for your wellbeing are immense.
“Indian summer” day here in Sydney. Doesn’t seem like autumn. πP
Jojo, you are a trooper there is NOTHING as distracting as pain, be it physical or emotional. My empathy is with you.
Tasa, NickyF GOOD ON YOU! Stay strong and power-full-filled!
Shaylee I too MUST put food in my stomach when I take mepainpills or I am killer-nauseous. BUT one bit of really good news; after 3-months of 5:2/4:3 and losing 10+kilos, my body-pain has been reduced significantly. I’ve had intense joint and bank pain for years. I’m not sure if the pain is reduced because of some of the excess weight has been taken off mesore bones OR if regular Fasting is the source, Maybe Fasting with it’s accompanying deeper sleeps and daily ‘lighter’ sense of well-being is the reason, Dunno. But the result is less pain medication and anti-inflammatory medicine intake; like I now take less then HALF of what a took daily the last 4-5 YEARS. Some days I take nothing at all. I’m gobsmacked and happy. This one single result is worth embracing this program as a WOL (way of life) just for me!
HappyNow: I’ve forwarded on your linked article to many friends and family ……simple + effective, yes!
Amazon: get well, I love reading your comments: “weight loss is 95% calorie restriction and 5% exercise”, YES, it is for me anyway.
Wiwi: me want recipe pretty please? “pizza today with a base of cauliflower rice, ground almonds, a tiny bit of Parmesan and egg base” guess I could Google ingredients yes? ka ka weather the next few days along the Mediterranean i think…
Aussie Oma: you are amazing to even THINK about 5:2 while under job hunting stress. Just stay as calm and relaxed as possible and do the things that bolster your confidence or give you a bit of a chuckle…good luck on all fronts.
Flat (again) last week on the scales, but am very clear how I created that result. Back on track doing a 4:3 this week to make up a bit for my bad-indulgences. BUT at least no weight gain! My body now craves FD like it does large motor movement exercise. If I miss a couple of days of either then mebody gives me a stern chat! Funny that. Not hungry much anymore but when hunger DOES rear it’s ugly head I just feed the damn thing BUT I feed it with correct food OR something liquid like herbal tea, cuppa broth etc., ’cause often I’m just thirsty vs being actually ‘hungry-hungry’). Just4me, this ‘feed-da-devil’ system works. And so it goes in the Algarve.
Stay strong, find freedom in discipline and if you stumble just right yourself and keep going!
Buttercup: now, right now, as a teenager developing your living-skills and life-long good habits, now is the time for you to focus and to DO.
Most wonderful achievements in life require a passionate commitment to the outcome. Usually this path-to-success includes: belief in self, discipline, will-power, hard work, acceptance of some kind of tension/pressure (which is a good thing), a willingness to ‘change’ and a clear picture of the end-goal.
It is simple but it sure ain’t easy.
So get back up on your horse and ride! No matter how many times you get bucked off GET BACK ON and in the famous words of NIKE: “Just Do It.”
There are MANY health programs out there. I hope you find one that suites your temperament and abilities. And very Good Luck on your successes!
Ha ha Penti, my new gym leggings have JDI written on one leg so when I’m struggling I read it and keep moving!
I had a lovely walk in Kew Gardens this morning, something that never fails to raise my spirits and also gets 10000 steps done π
The trees are all in blossom or sprouting new leaves or buds, the flowers are appearing everywhere, hundreds of bluebells coming into bloom, snakes head frittilaries, daffodils, tulips and numerous other bulbs and early flowering shrubs. The water fowl are all nesting, showing off and/or fighting. I was walking alongside the lake and was hissed at by a goose who had thoughtlessly laid an egg on the edge of the path and was then getting upset with everyone who walked past π
I had the best of the weather too, as it is now clouding over and the wind has picked up.
Evening all,
Lovely to read all the posts, sorry for not contributing, social life gets in the way (Brother’s 60th today, never thought my little brother would be that old!)
Wiwi I salute you for drinking Apple Cider Vinegar – I know its supposed to work miracles, but I just could not keep swallowing it. I tried it when arthritic knees were really inflammed (pre weight loss) and however much I diluted it, it made me gag! Purple is a big fan too, but I just can’t get it down! One article I read said to rinse your mouth well afterwards, or drink it with a straw, as it will take the enamel off your teeth. It is very acidic, but supposed to become alkaline in your small intestine after ‘ boosting’ the powers of your gastric juices with digestion! Not sure about the red wine comparison! I get a hangover after more than one glass these days, my old liver can’t cope, so best to resist.
I have just saved all the recent links provided so I can read them properly, lots of homework from this busy thread!
Jojo I hope your pain settles soon. Great news on your weight loss though, your determination is finally paying off. Amazon I hope your cough enjoys the walk, maybe you could leave it in the gardens? Someone else might like it! Go easy on the gym until you are better, your bod needs time to recover.
Hi Guys,
I can’t believe how time flyes and looks like I was here threading but it’s been a while.
There are the familiar names and I am glad Jojo is keeping the clan together and many of you as well.
Many had happened but the lack of energy and focus made me to lazy to keep up with you.
Wishing you a super weekend or week.
Xoxo
B
Morning/evening all,
Jo, what did the surgeon tell you to expect post op? Pain from gas inflation usually clears in a few days but it can take longer and that may be the case, but if you really don’t feel any better than a week ago then you should seek medical advice to ensure that everything is OK.
You’ve been feeling the effects of your gall bladder problem for a long time and it may just be that everything is taking a while to settle down.
No gym today as my cough hasn’t improved sufficiently and to be honest I’m not feeling too wonderful although much better than a couple of days ago. So glad I don’t have to make a do I don’t I go to work decision. I fear I would be heading back under the duvet!
If the weather stays dry I’ll venture out for some fresh air. I don’t have the will to fast today either but I’m going for half TDEE.
Have a good one everybody π
The sun has just put in an appearance so maybe I’ll get that walk.
Hi all,
Jojo maybe a visit to the doc would be advisable, I don’t think you should still be in that much pain. I recall you said your surgery was complicated by adhesions and I know these can cause a lot of pain, but they should have been sorted with your surgery. Maybe they stirred the nerve endings up a lot removing them, but I would be getting checked out. Its not like you to need pain killers, you are usually pretty tough!
Amazon I hope you start to improve too, too many sickies on this thread at present! Keep away from the gym until your cough is really gone. I am just joking, but I got the worst chest infection in my life 10 yrs ago and I blamed the fact that I was attending a gym at the time. I decided there were spores in the carpet from all those sweaty bodies. It sounded plausible to me, plus a perfect excuse never to go back!! The chlorine in the pool I swim in is pretty heavy, sometimes I wonder if all this fitness is worth it! A good walk in the fresh air, away from car fumes, is actually my favourite exercise now that my knees are 98% …..
