  • Day 24 Vancouver Canada FD.

Yesterday was a NFD and I went a little too wild, but it’s all good. This is my second real fast day and it’s going so much better than the first one. The first time around I tried to have 3-5 tiny meals and I spent the whole day hungry and exhausted. This time I’m saving everything for dinner and it’s strangely so much easier to focus with no food than with a tiny bit.

Day 24 – SW WA USA – FD

Traveling home & making it an FD. Glad to be on the list.

    Day 25 – Mornington Peninsula Australia – B2B Mon/Tue

Another successful FD yesterday so I think I might do B2B again this week as it seems to set me up for the rest of the week. Down another 0.6kg so 4.6kg eliminated so far this month! Very happy indeed 😁

    Starting off today’s pocket list

    Day 25/CD 16:8/Melbourne Australia

Very successful fast day yesterday. Happy to report my weight is 100gm lower than at the start of the month despite 12 day holiday, birthday and one enormous blow out. Hopefully I can fast again before going on holiday on Thursday. Retirement is hard work!

@songbirdme thank you for the link. I had read the article before. Interesting reading. I’d like to read the actual report. It doesn’t mention the type of food they ate, only that they were allowed 125% of normal calorie intake on NFDs. Fasting had the opposite affect on my LDLs although I can’t say if it is due to changes to foods I eat or fasting. I get my latest results on Wednesday. I’d also like to read more on the hormonal affects of fasting and the ages of the women participating. There were a small number of participants but I’m impressed with the duration of the study. My other concern with the study is it focused on the harder regime of ADF. I’m quite sure I would have dropped out too. It would have dominated my thinking. 5:2 is much more sustainable, flexible and simpler. I find it interesting that long term maintainers such as @at and both of us and others on this forum achieved our goal by following the basic 5:2. Hats off to anyone who has been successful in the long term following ADF and other versions of IF.

Have a wonderful and successful day all.

Day 24 California USA NFD traveling

    Day 24 Vancouver Canada FD.

Question for some of the veterans:

This is only my second fast day. The first was a bit of a disaster because I grazed all day (I stayed within my limit, but was miserable).

So far I’ve only had tea and coffee today, and was feeling good until about 5 minutes ago (it’s 3pm now). I now desperately want something to eat, but my original plan was to wait until dinner and enjoy one big normal meal.

In your experience, is it better to power through, or have a small something now (maybe 100 or so calories) and then have a slightly smaller dinner in a few hours?

    2nd post:
Try having something to drink such as a miso soup, coffee, tea or water. If you are still hungry afterwards choose to eat something with lots of crunch such as an apple. This usually helps to get through the day.

@fastveg – it’s your choice. Some days I do;some U don’t. In Dr.Mosley’s book, he usually waited to have one meal a day while Mimi, who wrote the book with him, us all had a little something at noon & then the rest of her 500 calories in the evening. They encourage people to work out to do what works for them.

    @onahealthyhigh @annemarilyn

Thank you both — I think I’ll try to power through today, but then maybe try a lunch/dinner combo next time and see what works best for me.

    Day 25 – Tokyo, Japan – NFD 81.5kg (80.3kg after workout)

@fastveg – Hunger comes in waves and typically only lasts for 20 to 30 minutes. With practice and a little effort you can ride it out and it will fad. A great deal of hunger is cause by how we have trained our bodies to eat. If you aren’t underweight you are likely in no danger from the hunger. Often people find that just drinking water helps. Sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference between hunger and thirst.

When you graze that is probably the worst thing you can do hormone wise. It is much better to let your body reduce its insulin levels. Eating generally triggers insulin production. Insulin’s job is to get our body to store the glucose and for most people that means make fat. One meal is better, no meals is even better than one meal, it just depends on you. Avoiding carbs and sugars (sugar is a carb) you can blunt the bodies insulin response. That is why meals like salmon with fresh vegetables are recommended. Nuts and seeds can also be good but they are calorie dense.

I do zero calorie fasting, so I’m a bit of an odd ball on 5:2.

    Best of luck to you.

Best of luck to everyone in the pocket! Took the liberty of adding FastVeg to the pocket fasters list. It is a list of everyone who is fasting on the 24th. It is nice to know others are fasting with you.

    Day 24, Guildford UK, NFD
    Day 25, Guildford UK, FD

    Real tough Times!

@fastveg – It is really about finding out what works for yourself. That is the beauty of fasting, it is very flexible and can be worked into many different diets. 5:2 is more of a way of life (WOL) than just a diet. It is something that you can shape and do long term. A big part of it is learning how to eat so that you feel great. There are many different types of eaters here from vegans to hard core low carb eaters. I’m in the middle myself except I generally avoid refined sugar. It is all about what works for you.

I’ve been doing 5:2 for almost a year and my focus is more about shifting my body to more muscle and less fat. My weight loss of 4.5kg sounds disappointing for almost a year, but on the other hand I did 100 pushups this morning before breaking my fast. I couldn’t have done that a year ago! 🙂 My blood glucose used to be a little too high in the morning and that is no longer an issue. Likewise my blood pressure has been doing really great and less than 10 years ago my doctor thought I should start taking medication for high blood pressure. While I am taking medication but instead of a pill it is fasting. My doctor knows about my fasting but hasn’t seen any negative impacts on my health from it.

However a year ago the fasting wasn’t very easy and even now while it is easy sometimes it isn’t comfortable. Right now though I have a hard time believing it was so hard at first, but it was. The first time I fasted more than 24 hours I was getting on a overseas flight and I had a bunch of snacks in my backpack. Once I was on the plane and it was breakfast time where I was headed I started eating. However that fast was hard. Making it through taught me I wouldn’t die from the discomfort. It was only after many more fasts that the fasting started to be easier. However that fast spurred me on because the result of it was very limited amount of jet lag. Typically when I flew to the states I was in bad shape for a couple of days, that time I was able to drive 900 miles the next day.

Another post … something strange I just noticed today.

Over my “abs” on the left side is more of just thick lose skin, on the right side there is clearly still some fat under the skin. This is the first time I’m noticed asymmetric distribution in my body fat. It seem strange I’m losing more fat on the left side than the right side, even though there isn’t a huge difference.

Day 25 NFD country West Australia
    Yesterday’s FD went quite well.
As with others I actually find it easier to simply not eat until the evening.
@fastveg, dykask has summed up 5:2 pretty well.
Some fasts are easier and some more difficult.
I find that when I am hungry I drink 3 glasses of water in a row. If I am still hungry I eat something like a small apple/ 6 almonds/ a celery stick/ glass of 1 teaspoon Vegemite in a cup of hot water/ miso soup
( not my favourite by any means but some love it!)/ tablespoon of plain Greek yoghurt etc. Any of these seem to curb my appetite if indeed it is hunger and not thirst.
As several have already said, it is what works for you that is important as it has to be sustainable.
Fasting usually takes a bit of tweaking and you might need to do a few fasts to figure out what works best.
And like children, just when you think you’ve got it figured out something will happen to make you realise that nothing is set in stone and it can change !

    Day 25, India, NFD
Had a decent FD yesterday. Ate a small bowl of rice with mushrooms for dinner which I felt a bit guilty about, as I usually avoid carbs on a FD. Is it okay to have a small portion of carbs on an FD?

Day 25 NFD North Wales. Very successful fast day yesterday 🎉 Very pleased. I am definitely finding fasting easier. Going to make a doctors appointment when I get home to find out what is happening to my cholesterol levels. Good luck to all those fasting today.

    Day 25 UK FD 🌈

Busy day 2nd FD gonna go for it. Tip keep busy. Keep hydrated. 💦🐉👊🏻

    Day 25 UK FD

Not sure how I got on the list yesterday as I certainly wasn’t fasting. Quite the opposite, I ate too much, so need to fast today. I don’t like this balancing on the edge business. I want to get further into healthy territory.

    Day 25, UK, NFD

    Day 25, Northumberland UK, ???

Not sure what today will be. Should try and make it a fast day however there is still around 500 calories worth of homemade lemon meringue pie in the fridge, and I’m feeling fairly run down this week. Will see how it goes.

Day 25 UK NFD ideally a nice controlled day today and fast again Wednesday. @strawberriesandcream – yes I’m abstaining definitely until Friday ,maybe even Saturday and we have @matron65 too.

    Day 25 | Sydney Australia | NFD

I have what feels like a cold virus hanging around. Slightly sore throat and a general “blergh” feeling.

Day 24’s fast was a struggle, first time I’ve really struggled to get through a fast day. I’m going to make sure I get plenty of nutrition and I won’t fast again until I feel better.

    Day 25, Newcastle UK, FD

Alcohol free 800 cal fast day achieved yesterday. Planning on the same today.

@rahul1905 – you can eat whatever you like on any day, so never feel guilt – that is counterproductive. However, it has been proven that protein and healthy fat make one feel fuller for longer whilst carbs tend to have a temporary filling effect. So unless you decide to have a no calorie fast day, it is wise to use your calorie allowance on foods that are both nutritious and satiating. Read the 5:2 book again for guidance and maybe use the 5:2 recipe book for ideas. You’ll also find a wealth of information on You Tube.
@rainbowsmile – I’m suspecting your statement is relating to more than just 5:2. Thinking of you x
    Go pocket winos!!!

“I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions” – Stephen Covey

    Day 25 – Woking, UK – NFD
    245.9lbs
And back into 17st 7lbs (just – but it counts, right?). Had a good fast day yesterday at 581 calories. Also found out when I went to buy my soup at lunch that beef consommé is half the calories of French Onion soup (68 vs. 132 for a can) so I’m going to try that for my lunch on my next fast day and see if it’s enough to keep me going until dinner.

Good luck to all those fasting today.

    Day 25 Belfast FD
After a successful FD yesterday I’m going for a B2B today to shift those couple of holiday pounds.

I get what you say @dykask about the cravings. On the last few days of my holidays I gave In to my sweet tooth, which has wakened that dragon. It’s so hard to get that back in control. I’m not usually a ‘nut’ person, but have started taking a handful of mixed nuts to curb those cravings.
@Strawberriesandcream/Brightonbelle – I’m with you in your pocket wino list. No alcohol yesterday, this week coming and we’ll see after that. Where is your cruise @Strawberries?

I’m starting a pocket list for today. I’ve taken the liberty of adding a few who have posted ahead of me

    Have a good day everyone.

    Day 25 Cornwall UK FD

    Weight 156.5 lbs, BMI 26.3

Reality hit me hard, I haven’t weighed for months and though I knew I’d put on I hadn’t realised how much.

So a fast day today. No alcohol this week.

My daughter’s wedding is in October so I’d better pull myself together!

    Onwards and down!

Day 25 Newcastle UK 🇬🇧 NFD.
Had a good FD yesterday. Reading some of the posts looks like people are trying to find the best solution for their fasting day. I don’t think there is a right or wrong way it’s just a way that works best for yourself. For me not eating till 12 noon works everyday.
On a FD an apple around 1 to 2 pm.
Then the bulk of mate calories around 6 to 7 p.m. since March I’ve had two fasting days which I have failed on I put this down to not been busy at work as well as not having a plan in place for that particular day.
I’ve always found the non fasting days the hardest to control.
Good luck everyone whatever you’re doing today

    Day 25, Wales UK, NFD

Good FD yesterday. @fastveg I’m quite new to 5:2 but I’m finding that a bowl of veg soup around 100 Calories for lunch keeps me going till dinner and I drink lots of herbal tea.

    @strawberriesandcream, @brightonbelle, @matron65, @rocy65 – I’m with you on abstinence until the weekend.

    Take care everybody x

    2nd post
Sorry @debster251 I’m with you too in abstinence till the weekend!

Interesting comments on hunger and cravings.

My first few weeks doing intermittent fasting I was packing huge lunches of more than half a kilo of steamed or boiled vegetables. Cabbage, carrots, broccoli, anything fairly low in calories. And it worked, I was too full to feel hungry.

The first time I tried a 3-day fast I really hit the wall late on the 3rd day and I had to eat something. Weak, nauseous, feeling like I was about to pass out. I had that one other time late on the 2nd day of a 2-day fast. But since then I’ve done a few more 2 and 3 day fasts and not had a problem. If anything I feel less hungry on the 2nd and 3rd day.

A lot of the time now I find that it is the “ritual” of eating that I miss if I skip meals. I find that a bowl of miso soup, containing 20 or 30 calories, can be a perfectly satisfying meal.

Just to add, strawberries at 32 calories per 100g are great if you are craving something sweet. Tomatoes, which taste very sweet once you have weaned yourself off sugar, are only 18 calories per 100g. I sometimes have a couple of tomatoes and some lean ham or chicken for lunch.

Second post – definitely not a fast day. The lemon meringue pie won, and it was delicious. But other than that I aim to keep it controlled. Steak and salad planned for tea, so some berries and yoghurt in the middle of the day should see me through and then a fast day later in the week.

Day 25, Rocky Mountains, US, CD

I have been on a binge. I have to fess up. I don’t feel good, I said now enough is enough. So I am on the wagon again from today on. Now I have to figure out why I did this. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

    Day 25, CD, UK

The scales weren’t very kind to me this morning! Like @redrockgirl302, I had a bit of a binge over the weekend…. But yesterday’s FD was very successful, other than a bit of a nasty headache (still have it today) so drinking lots of water to hopefully remedy that.

Still happy that I’m in that next stone down from where I started and on track to not just hit the goal I set myself for the month, but to surpass it 🙂

6 days left guys to blast it….

    Day 25……Florida…..NFD

@sirisan……I’m in The premenopausal stage as well, I have also have adapted this life style since late Oct., so as far as hormonal changes, I’ve only noticed minor changes such as my hair and nails are growing like weeds, my monthly is lessening by about one day, and rather than a 28 day cycle, I’m more like 23/24 days. Mood changes they come and go but around the beginning of my monthly, I am less likely to hurt people……
I haven’t had the chance to read the article but honestly I believe that anyone adopting a new eating life style will see some hormonal changes as their bodies change and we begin listening to our bodies needs and not giving in to it wants. I also believe these changes could be for the best unless one morning you wake up and find that you don’t recognize yourself in the mirror.

@fastveg…. everyone does their FD different, they use their bodies as a guide. For me, I find having a small lunch under 50 calories gives me enough to hold me until dinner. Here’s what my FD looks like. I start my fast the night before at 7:30pm, 6am, I have my coffee with cream for 40 calories. That’s about three cups of coffee. At 12:30pm, I eat veggies. Lately, I’m on a broccoli and cheese kick. For about 40 calories, then about 6:30pm I have a normal size dinner with my family. I do it this way, so that I don’t have to eat differently then they do. I don’t count calories at dinner just very mindful of my portion sizes.

For the 4 months, I was on plateau mountain, I had the goal of reaching 135, then half way thru my plateau, I switch to just wanting the scale to break into the 130’s. With the month almost ending, my 135 goal is within reach. With that being said, I also have began to think about at what point do I start maintaining this new body. Is it 130 or lower, is it now at 137. Or do I wait see if I hit another plateau and instead of calling it a plateau call it maintenance instead?

Okay, I think I’m beginning to over think, I can smell the brain cells burning….. so, I’m off!

A whim away, a whim away, a whim away…..the lion sleeps tonight!

    Belfast, Day 25, FD

    Day 24, 23, 22 – all NFD

Had a long weekend off work, gorgeous waether here yesterday. Hope I haven’t done too much damage this weekend…I’m scared to set on the scales.

I’ve updated the Pocket list that @debster251 started. Hope I haven’t missed or accidentally added anybody.

Shame I didn’t stop when I got back home yesterday afternoon. So much work to do…Anyway, I am still full after yesterday binge so fasting is going very well. Just a shame that tomorrow I am supposed to meet a friend/colleague for coffee and cake. Uff!

    Day 25, Gozo Malta, nfd

    Day 25 – Cumbria UK – FD

A very controlled day yesterday – was busy and did not eat much – just over 800cals for the day! Not feeling hungry on waking so will still be going for my FD today as planned.

Just back from my usual Tuesday morning hike on the fells – only two of us today, so a brisk 6.5km and only some 300m of up but we kept the pace up – a lovely flat white coffee at the end and a good catch up with life!

@mogaman – I’m hoping you are on your FD like me today? We have got this!
@sirisan and @lmrenfrey – your weight will fluctuate over the week by as much as 1-2kg and that is perfectly normal! I personally find weighing once a week, usually after my 2nd FD, as a good marker in that it probably is my lowest weight so gives me a feel good factor and that weight will be a good marker now that I’m in maintenance and the same applied when I was still wanting to lose weight. Also a pair of trousers of fitted skirt that has been too tight will be good indicator when it fits perfectly!
@fastveg – Power through – drink plenty of water – personally I find it easier to keep most of my calories for an evening meal, apart from around 50cals for 100 mls of skimmed milk in my cups of tea during the day on a FD. I also drinks lots of water on a FD and keep myself busy – seems to work. Sometimes I actually find that I’m not hungry come the evening so don’t bother eating and continue with a water/tea FD and maybe a glass of my homemade kefir before bed – I only eat on a FD if I actually feel hungry!!
@dykask – you are not an oddball 😉Great advice – You listen to your body as most of us who have been following this WOL for a while have learnt to do – only eat if you are hungry!
@onahealthyhigh and @songbirdme – certainly maintenance feels good and 5:2 is sustainable as a permanent lifestyle!
@rainbowsmile – hope all is OK – your global family on here are with you 🤗
@strawberriesandcream @brightonbelle @debster251 @matron65 @rocy65 @missybear – I may well join you in the “Pocket Winos” abstinence until the weekend 🍷😈 I’m sure my body will appreciate it 😇

@redrockgirl302 – we all have a slide every now and then – You can do that u-turn!

    Day 25 – USA – NFD

    Day 25 – USA (Illinois) – NFD

hmm, long post vanished… into cyberspace….

Yesterday’s CD was very good at about 600 calories. Today won’t be so controlled, but am back below maintenance at 158.3#.

@fastveg – you’ve gotten good advice so far. In my 5:2 journey of 16 months, I never have done a B2B and only one all liquid day. I’ve lost 35 pounds having been on maintenance for the last 6 of it. Now I do 6:1 but really do my best on NFD’s to control. I take one apple mid-day even on a FD for regularity then about any food for 400 calorie supper. That is usually salad with some protein.

Yesterday’s FD was well, the migraines and “hangry” cravings are subsiding.😊
Only a half a bowl of pho soup yesterday evening.😊I feel good about today, so far😊
@onahealthyhigh great advice! That has worked for me in the past. For me, if I can make myself have a boiled egg and something with vitamin C, like a tomato helps me power through. @fastveg

Day 25 Massachusetts USA FD Yes @at, we’ve got this today! @rahul1905 It feels strange to suggest this to someone who lives in India but, have you tried cauliflower rice? You get the rice texture and more nutrition at about 1/10 of the calories. Every time I have to write down calories for regular rice, like if I eat out and of course they don’t have cauliflower rice, I’m pretty horrified! I started this FD the best possible way, with two egg whites and a piece of toast – about 100 of my 500. So all the rest can be at dinner. The plan is for chicken breast, sweet potato, and salad. I may be able to have 2 ounces of wine with seltzer and ice, which satisfies me. It is chilly for the 2nd day here – unusual for mid-July. I think I’ll do a stability ball workout indoors to warm me up. It sure isn’t a swimming day!

    2nd post

Today is no longer a FD – I’m already over 800 calories, so will make it a CNFD instead. Went to work this morning fine then came home at lunchtime feeling a bit ‘off’. Decided to have our main meal then and have just woken up after two hours sleep. Coming down with a cold I suspect – been a lot of sneezing going on.

@debster251 – we’re going to The Baltics – Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and St. Petersburg. All new experiences for both of us – we’re very excited.

Well done on your inaugural cycle ride to work @liathanail – you’re braver than me!

    Day 25 California USA FD

Back from my trip to Wisconsin and Chicago. After 5 days of scale withdrawal, I find that I lost over a pound. This morning’s weight was 139.2 or 63.1 kg, my lowest since I started 5:2. My total loss since starting on May 10 is 16.6 pounds or 7.5 kg.

I have to catch up on posts, but happy to see I have lots of company on my FD today!

✨Good Luck all today, please add your name to the list if you are fasting.😊
