  • Quacka, so glad that your week’s FDs were successful! I love lime juice squeezed on my veg. Sadly, my OH still smothers his with margarine. DD nearly falls off her chair every time he does it. You have done well to train a husband. My old dog can’t be taught new tricks – although I was able, after many years, to get him out of the habit of drinking a pepsi every single day with lunch. He hasn’t had one in years.

Were there posts missing earlier? I’m sure I read some more recent ones when the earlier ones weren’t there before. After my first post today, I went for a walk very early to try and dodge the rain and was rewarded with seeing two dolphins. It started raining just then so I decided to turn back – really so I could walk alongside the dolphins. Starting to feel like a zombie having been up for so many hours already so I’ll just say hello everyone.

    7:45am Fri, Adelaide,
    Good morning all.

After complaining about late tradesmen yesterday, it was actually my error. They are coming this morning. Hence another early start.

Cali, the crepe myrtle is such a pretty tree, that must make a spectacular show in your garden.
Lilly pillys (syzygium) are definitely shrubs not trees. They became very popular as screening plant in Sydney in the 1990s when a tv gardener started promoting them. I assumed they wouldn’t work in my climate as it’s a lot less humid here. I think it’s just a case of finding the right variety.
I do often roast the kale-sprouts, but I blanch them first by pouring boiling water over and leaving for 5 minutes. I also like them just blanched or boiled. To me they taste more like kale rather than brussel sprouts.
All the greens you listed also taste bitter to me, although I can cope with small amounts of rocket/arugula or endive in a salad if it’s just one of many greens. But not by itself. It’s hard to avoid rocket/arugula here as it seems to be the salad green that most cafes use. I find the peppery taste helps moderate the bitter undertone.

Cate, sorry to hear you have been dealing with MCS for a while. I can’t begin to imagine how you avoid all the triggers. Is there any connection with gut health do you know? There are a few of us here with chronic illnesses who are working on improving our gut health.

Thin, there might have been some missing posts. The whole website was down for a while yesterday evening. Glad you had dolphins accompanying you on your walk – I’ve heard of taking the dog, but that’s a new idea.

Good morning to anyone else who’s reading but hasn’t posted yet.

My FD was OK yesterday but I was so cold all day. Usually that’s only an issue in winter. NFD today, I’m planning to roast some veg for dinner tonight. I have a tiny piece of lamb leg that I’ll roast with them – enough for one meal. There should be enough veg left over for a second dinner without meat.

    Have a good day all.

Good morning! It’s pea soup here in Sydney, I can’t see anything except white fog out of the office window. It’s going to clear to a sunny day, the only one for the next week so OH is madly doing laundry at home.

It’s Maxx’s birthday today and he is 1. Here is a pic, not a very good one as he wouldn’t sit still. We have some presents for him and we will give them to him when I get home from work tonight. He is currently chomping on a birthday bone. He is naughty and cheeky but we just love him to bits
    https://imgur.com/a/JDb2BrU

NFD – or Lull day as Cinque says. I had a bad day food-wise yesterday, I don’t know why but it’s behind me and today I will eat very mindfully.

Have a great day lovely people

Thin- how wonderful to see dolphins on your walk! Lucky you.
LJ- I am not sure if there is a definite link but I have been working on improving my gut health anyway. There is nothing much you can do with MCS, other than avoidance, which is almost impossible. Having our home fragrance-free is a saviour. I’m nowhere near as bad as I was back in March, but I am so much more careful these days & always have a mask in my pocket.
Anzac- Maxx may be naughty & cheeky, but he sure is very cute 🙂

Happy Birthday Maxx. If I were a dog, I wouldn’t sit for a wax candle either. I bet he’s enjoying his birthday bone. What are his other presents? He looks a lovely, healthy dog. Does he swim? Anzac, is your office in the heart of Sydney? It’s been so long since we were there – we found it a very welcoming place for such a large city. I suppose, like everywhere, it’s changed beyond recognition in 25 years. Perth was like a ‘toy town’ when we arrived here. The population has since doubled.

Cate, your condition must be very difficult to manage. When I worked in hospitals in the US, we were always asked not to wear perfume to work because sick patients can find it particularly noxious. I’ve tried to be mindful of that in various situations. My DD can’t walk through the perfume section of department stores without her eyes streaming. Nothing like what you must go through daily I realise.

LJ, the website being down might explain my confusion over the order of posts yesterday. Gosh, I’d be in a panic if this website were to be removed for any reason! Yes, I have been lucky enough to meet seven Perth losers in person. My DD had a laugh about that after all we taught her about cyber security. Any Perth lurkers, please show yourselves here! You have nothing to lose – or do you?

A few pages back, someone was talking about limiting their snacking to fruit. I forgot to say at the time that I have restricted my snacking to spoonfuls of kefir and a few nuts. I keep a few varieties of nut available and, eaten in small quantities, find them satiating and of course a healthy choice. I haven’t gained weight from this. In fact, like you CalifD, I teeter just above and just below the 60kg mark.

    Have a great day all.

    9:37am Fri, Adelaide

The tradies are here siliconing my gutter joins and reattaching 2 down pipes properly.

Anzac, thankyou for the photo. Happy birthday Maxx.

Cate, I hope you find some improvements from your focus on gut health. It feels like that’s a health area than has only just started receiving some scientific study.
When my office moved into a brand new building in the 1990s quite a few of us were worried about those chemicals as three women I worked with all had full-term stillborn births within our first year there, it was so awful. It’s something you expect to be so rare these days and many of us wondered if chemical exposure contributed.

Thin, it was me whose snacking was getting out of hand and I decided to limit it to fresh fruit for a few days to break the pattern. I do have kefir or yoghurt too now, but I have to be careful with nuts. Sometimes I can limit myself to half a dozen and other times it’s many handfuls – I’m mostly ok if the nuts aren’t salted. Nuts and cheese were foods I couldn’t risk having in the house a few years ago, because I would binge on them. It took me a couple of years of careful retraining to be able to eat them in a more considered way – but I still have my moments.
Losing the support from this forum would be terrible. When I was using the meal replacement products to lose weight I was part of an online support group (my first ever, this is the second). I had gotten to my goal weight when they decide to completely redo that website – the forum on the new website suffered many IT issues for months and so many people just gave up in frustration – it’s hard enough to stick the program and the lack of a support group didn’t help. Being able to get advice and just knowing you aren’t alone in this really helps.

Hi thin, Maxx is getting a rope toy with tennis balls attached and a new bouncy ball. He loves stuffed animals but he is a destructive little thing and chews them up in no time and then we have to take it away so he doesn’t eat the stuffing. Did I say little? We went to the vet on Tuesday (I was WFH) as he had itchy ears and he got weighed. Oh my goodness, he is 43.4 kilos and not overweight! The vet did say it would be good for him to lose a few to keep him lean so we are slowly reducing his kibble allowance as he gets treats all day from training. He loves swimming in the river but last summer he was just a puppy and scared of the pool so didn’t swim with us at home. It will be interesting to see what happens this year

I do work in the heart of Sydney CBD, on the 39th floor of a building near Town Hall station so yep, right in the thick of it. I don’t like it, I don’t like commuting because you hit the nail on the head; people are rude and unfriendly and I’m regularly elbowed out of the way (often by young men) when trying to get on the train. My lovely company embraces flexible working so I am able to start early (around 7.00ish) and leave early (around 3.30/4.00ish) so I can avoid the really peak times. I am very claustrophobic so crowded trains make me uncomfortable.

OH and I have a plan to retire to a beachside town one day, somewhere on the South Coast of NSW, and open a little cafĂ©. But so long as we want to continue on our big trips, I have to keep working. Where’s that lotto ticket?

Gosh, sorry for long post all about ME. I got a bit carried away!

So sorry to hear about your condition Cate, it must be so tough but glad you have found ways to combat the symptoms a bit

LJoyce, good luck with the tradies today, hope they turn up and do a good job

Hey All! Just a quick check-in this morning . . . busy day and busy weekend ahead. It’s work-related, so nothing to get excited about.

Love reading all your updates! Also holding good thoughts for you, whether it’s a FD or NFD for you.

    Cheers!

Thin- It’s great that you are more mindful of affecting others adversely. I think it is such an unknown thing that so many people just don’t understand it. I don’t consider myself ill& there are people so much worse off than me. March gave me a taste of what their lives might be like.
LJ- Through an allergy group, I have got to know 2 women who had to give up work at Centrelink because they moved into new premises & became very sick. That is awful that three women gave birth to still-borns after your office move. My bet would be exposure to toxic chemicals. Another way of saying MCS is TILT (toxic-induced loss of tolerance ) It is going to become more & more common I think as the world uses more & more fragrance, especially room deodorisers. Hopefully, this may change.
Thanks, Anzac. I really am not as badly off as many people as I have the advantage of living in a very healthy environment & don’t have to work anymore. I’m still reasonably active & count myself as healthy. I hope I can stay that way. The allergy group I am in is really helpful & most of my strategies have come from them.
Hi, Suz & all other 5:2’ers!

Almost at the end of another FD that was pretty easy. I even got in 11,400 steps today.

I think as chemicals become even more prevalent, more people will become allergic or affected by breathing them. So many young kids today seem to have serious allergies, more than I remember being aware of when I was a kid. Fertilizers in California are a big source of pollution and allergies. Even though many are now banned, it seems like there are new ones to take their places. One nice thing about Australia is that most of the population lives along the coasts so the pollution gets blown out into the ocean

Happy Birthday to Maxx! He’s such a handsome guy. Anzac, you mentioned him tearing up stuffed toys and getting the stuffing all over. One of our dog’s “toys” that he likes is a long fluffy red sock that I’ve filled with squeakers (that I ordered from guess where? 😉) and knotted near the top. When all the squeakers get broken I just untie the sock and replace them.

Hope everyone is having a good day. I’ve been watching the clips from Harry and Meghan’s visit to Australia. They seem to be avoiding most of the rain and having a lovely time. I just can’t imagine how she wears those very high heels every day, especially now that they’re expecting a baby. They don’t seem to bother her though.

Hi, Cali. I try so hard not to go on about the increased use of toxic chemicals as most people that I mix with scoff & are very sceptical. I don’t want my allergies to be a focus here. It’s such a supportive forum & we are a complex & diverse group of people. I hope I get to California one day as I have a nephew there.

CalifD, great job on the successful FD and all those steps – where were they walked? I like your doggo toy ideas.

LJ, that was awful to read of those three stillbirths. And very funny to read of your workmen not being late after all yesterday!

Anzac, great presents. I enjoyed the post all about YOU. What is WHF please? And what was the cause of Maxx’s itchy ears? I know it’s grass seed season for dogs but I’m thinking that would be just one ear, maybe? It sounds glamorous to be working in Sydney’s CBD but how rude of those young men pushing and shoving on the train. I hope you give them a good knee’ing back.

    Hello Suz.

    Where’s Cinque today?

I’ve had an interesting afternoon attending the wake of my cryptic crossword teacher who was 90 when he retired last year from holding our weekly classes that I attended for 12 years. It was fun to see all my former classmates and I was reminded that they were a lot more fun-loving than some of these far-too-serious bridge players. You learn a lot about people when they die and, guess what? My cryptic crossword teacher was a former spook! In fact, the top spook that you can be in Australia – Director-General of ASIO. Everything makes sense now.

    Saturday 6:10am

    Good morning everyone

It’s a lovely clear day out there, unlike yesterday when our little coastal village was covered with a thick fog. I remember once going out in our boat in fog like that and it is amazing how disorientating it is. We have a gps that shows us where we have gone before so we followed that to get out of the river and into the ocean, but the fog was thick out there as well. I couldn’t handle it so we had to come back into the river until the fog lifted. It was scary not being able to see the swell coming or if there were other boats in our path.

    Happy belated birthday Maxx 🙂

I had a day off yesterday and it was a NFD. I had some firm tofu I pulled out of the freezer a couple of days ago and I wanted to try marinating it. I floured it very lightly with cornflour and then fried it in a tiny bit of oil. When it was lightly browned I took it out and cubed it and put it into the marinade. A very simple marinade of my homemade chilli jam, tamari and mirin. It was yummy and I can’t wait to try other flavours on it. I can’t believe how filling tofu is.

Weight yesterday was 67.7 and today 68.3kg.

I hope everyone has a lovely weekend. We are supposed to get rain here again this afternoon and tomorrow so I want to get out in the garden before that comes. Things are growing so quickly at the moment and I need to make sure they are all being looked after. We have tomatoes, cucumbers, chillies, capsicums, shallots baby spinach, kale and some herbs. OH has two big beds full of garlic. I will take some photos and you will see what I mean.

    Bye for now x

Good morning, cool, grey and wet here after 27C yesterday.
Melbourne, keeping us on our toes, as usual. 7:45am

I had the busiest day yesterday, with lovely people. Brunch with two sisters, a coffee with a friend who is just out of hospital, and then tea and chat with a amazing young friend of my daughters who came around for a bunch of silver beet.

Very tired today so I won’t try and respond to all the wonderful posts except Thin, wow, that cryptic crossword spook is the best story!

And Cate, I do know AESSRA. years ago I was given a little canary badge that I think was made by them to raise awareness. I am so glad you are managing your symptoms comparatively easily.

It is day-before-Fast-Day for me, and I am going to take it very easy.

    Best wishes to everyone

    Hi Everyone, good morning.

Hope you are all well, and 5:2ing happily along.
I am back from my school holiday minding grandchildren stint, and I have put on a bit over a kg.

    Back ASAP
    Merry

Just a quick hello to wish everyone well.

As I mentioned yesterday, it’s a very busy weekend for us–we’re helping/hosting at a reunion of graduates from the school where OH is dean of faculty and where I work . . . folks who graduated 50 years ago. I spoke last night, OH will speak today and tomorrow, and in between times we’re mingling and hearing some very good stories of what folks have done in these past 50 years. Inspiring!

Downside: too much food. Too.much.food. Breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, tea, supper. Trying to fill up on the veg and avoid the carbs; easier said than done! Conference centre fare all the way.

Hope this finds you enjoying your Saturday. Peace to all!

Ok, back briefly. I’m on a train, going in and out of reception etc.

Welcome Anzac if I haven’t done so before, and welcome Suz. You will already know that there is much information and inspiration here.

I’ve been reading back a bit, (not finished yet) – lovely garden progress LJ, amazing windows Thin! Cinque – hope you’re going OK through your very busy period. As usual you have me looking up the names of the interesting things you cook – arrabiata sauce this time. CaliD- your decorations look fab, but I have to confess to not quite getting Halloween. I do know someone who just recently went out to buy some Halloween treat bags which have started appearing here recently, and is going to eat them herself!

    Get off time.

    Cont.

Almost farcical the number of times away from home this year; school hols grandees time, and just back from a few days in NZ straight after that; didn’t even go home between.

So – first time back at exercise physiologist yesterday and on his scales I’m up 1.5kgs, but my clothes don’t feel like that so maybe there’s a fluid thing happening. I’ll see how the end of this week goes. FD’s Mon/Thurs. This past week was Mon and yesterday. I still have my goal to be back at 62.0 by Christmas, so there’ll need to be some strict accountability, and I’ll be joining Thin’s Silly Season Challenge again.

Well that may be it for me today.
    Onwards and Downwards,
And if you fall off the horse get back on it.
    Merry

Cinque, we were wondering what happened to you yesterday. You are usually the first poster in my mid-afternoon here. (Mid-afternoon the day prior! 😁) Glad to hear you had a busy and fun day yesterday.

Thin, great story about your cryptic crossword teacher who lived a good long life. I bet you never suspected his prior position. I’m back at 59.5 today from 60.4 the day before, my typical up and down bounce these days. You and I should challenge each other to get into the 58’s during the next month. It shouldn’t be that hard since it’s only a kg. Then we could bounce under 60. 😁

Anzac, you should take a picture out the window from where you work in Sydney. Big cities are great places to work. So much going on and great places for lunch or just walking around. I worked in San Francisco in the financial district many years ago when I first moved to California. It was certainly the best location I’ve worked in. (Except for a scary earthquake on the 12th floor. Actually, it wasn’t that bad, no damage, just frightening looking out the windows while it was happening.)

Merry, it seems like you’ve hardly been at home this year! You’ve really been all over the place this year. So when will you travel to Caligornia? Cate, if you come to visit your brother, be sure to let me know. It would be great to meet people from this forum. Although I feel like I know some of you so well already.

Suz, hope you survive all the food at the conference. It sounds like there is hardly a break between meals. Pace yourself. 😁

Quacka, I never thought of marinating tofu after frying it. Did it absorb a lot of the marinade? I still have a couple packs in the freezer that I’m looking forward to thawing and marinating. Chili jam and tamari sound like good options. Tofu has such an interesting texture after freezing, almost like a sponge.

12:30pm Sat, on a sunny mild Adelaide day

    Happy weekend everyone.

Merry good to hear from you. I hope the school holiday child minding didn’t tire you too much. I hope the little NZ holiday was fun.

Suz, it sounds like an interesting weekend, even if it is full of food minefields. Just do the best you can and know that a FD is coming.

Cinque, I hope you have the restful day that you need. It sounds like you have a lovely if tiring day on Friday.

Quacka, you described exactly what I also do with firm tofu. When I use fresh rather than frozen tofu I sit it on layers of paper towel for a couple of hours first to draw out some of the moisture. My marinade is similar – tamari, garlic, chilli and lime juice. It’s nice by itself or added to stir fry veg just after removing them from the heat.

Thin, it sounds like your former crossword teacher was good at keeping secrets if you didn’t know about his occupation. I guess in that line of work keeping “mum” is part of the brief.
By the way, WFH means work from home – I don’t know many abbreviations, but as I did quite a few WFH days myself in my final years in the workforce it’s one I recognise.

Anzac, In addition to doing some WFH days, I had the same working hour options as you before I retired and made a similar choice. I started work between 7:00-7:30 so that I could leave by 4:00 and avoid all of the peak hour rush. It made the working day so much less stressful. I also like the fact that you get a bigger block of time in the afternoon-evening. This was always very noticeable during daylight saving. I think it makes it easier to feel like you have a life outside of work. Getting home from work at 6-7pm it never felt like I did anything but work M-F.

Cali, well done on the steps, you’ve been doing really well to keep your movement to a high level in recent weeks. I hope you see the results in your fitness levels. It should also have a positive effect on blood pressure and heart rate.

Cate, the tricky thing about chemical exposure is not knowing that it’s even happened. Unless there’s a distinctive odour, how do you know what you’re breathing in? It got me thinking about my own house, which was brand new when I bought it and has been filled partly with new furniture. I’ve probably exposed myself to a whole host of chemicals and didn’t even think about it at the time.

My nephew, wife & kids are calling in this afternoon on their bike ride – trying out their brand new bikes.

A controlled NFD for me, with a FD planned for tomorrow.

    Have a nice weekend.

    Hi everyone

Maxx said a big thank you for your birthday wishes. He had a lovely day and enjoyed being spoilt.

Cali what a great idea about the toy in the sock. I’m going to try it with a tennis ball. Well done with your FD and 11,400 steps, that’s not easy to do. Funny you mentioned earthquakes; I lived in New Zealand for just under 2 years (and that’s where I met hubby – another story for another day) and the earthquakes were terrifying. They funny thing is, what I considered an earthquake was a mild tremor to the locals and they continued on as though it wasn’t happening! San Fran was an interesting place, we visited for the first time last year on our big 25th wedding anniversary trip (Cuba, New York, San Fran and Fiji). I really loved it but the homeless people made me sad. The best day was a trip to Napa where we went on the ‘wine train’ and had a really fabulous day being spoilt on the train and then exploring a hugely interesting winery in a castle.

That’s just awful about those poor woman with still-borns LJ, was there an investigation?

Cate, I love your positive attitude; a positive mind is very powerful. My Dad is proof of that. He never lets himself get stressed and is always so positive and now 93 and going strong.

Thin, WHF is a typo for WFH which is ‘work from home’ (but I’m sure you knew that!). That was an amazing revelation about your former crossword teacher. I didn’t even know you could attend cross work classes. I like doing them but certainly not cryptic.

I love how forums like this one offer so much support and the only other one I am on is a Labrador forum. They saved Maxx and I am not exaggerating. When we first brought him home we were not expecting a biting hurricane and I don’t know if you know much about Labrador puppies but they are the most challenging. We also unfortunately had OH’s best mate and his girlfriend invited themselves to stay for 10 days. Yes 10 of my precious 14 days off were spent being cook, cleaner and taxi driver for them. They were very lazy and what made it worse they were night owls, going to bed at 3.00 or 4.00am and Maxx was getting me up around 4.00am. So I remember sitting on the back porch with bleeding hands and arms and a yellow crocodile running around chewing me, the outdoor furniture, plants and deciding that he had to go back to the breeder. We were obviously doing something dreadfully wrong because no little 8 week old puppy should be behaving like this. OH who was caught in the middle and staying up with his mate then getting up to help me agreed. I happened on the Labrador Friends forum and discovered many many people around the world with puppies the same age going through EXACTLY the same thing. The wise ones who had been through it and often many times gave advice on how to calm him and we decided to keep him. Oh thank goodness because even though he is still naughty and cheeky we just love him to bits.

There, I’ve done it again, gone off on another rant! You all are such great listeners I can’t help myself 🙂

Quacka, we had a thick fog yesterday too. I couldn’t see one single thing out of my work window. But it cleared to such a lovely day. We’ve had sunshine today but there is a big storm hurtling towards us so not for much longer. Hope you had a lovely arvo with your nephew, wife and kids.

Cinque, glad you had a lovely busy day yesterday. It sounded really nice. Sorry to hear you are really tired now, take it easy.

Suz, the reunion sounds great and very busy. Well done on organising and speaking, neither are easy things to do. You can’t control the meals because you are out of your home but glad you were making the best choices possible.

Hey Merry, so nice to ‘meet’ you and look forward to future chats.

I’m having a much better NFD today. We took Maxx for a 1.5 hour walk this morning with lots of meet ups with other dogs and a couple of swims in the river. The humidity is awful today as the sun came out and after all that rain. Poor Maxx has been horizontal on the tiles for hours. I’m marinated some chicken in some Asian spices and we will have rice and a nice salad tonight. I cook on the weekends and OH during the week (except I am now doing my own on FDs). I have been tempted to snack even though not hungry and for the first time in many years I have been able to resist. Yay!

Gosh I think I’m trying for the longest post ever. Sorry!

Have a beautiful rest of the weekend

This came up on my twitter feed: https://twitter.com/Martyfields/status/1053546129650925569

    See you tomorrow!

LJ, I always hesitate when buying new furniture or carpeting because of all the chemicals used in their manufacture, including tons of fire retardants sprayed on furniture in this country. California is on the verge of passing a law banning the chemicals. The process has been going on for some time. I thought it had already gone through. https://chemicalwatch.com/67350/california-assembly-approves-flame-retardant-ban The other thing that apparently has a lot of off gassing chemicals is pressed wood furniture which is so common these days. There isn’t a lot of affordable furniture that doesn’t contain at least some. I guess that’s another good reason to have windows open when the weather is cooperating.

Anzac, we’re a couple hours away from San Francisco now and understand that the homeless problem is much worse than when we lived closer. It’s a huge embarrassment when a state that has the 5th or 6th largest economy in the world can’t do better for its poorest.
We did the Napa wine train tour years ago when we lived in the a Bay Area. It was for OH’s dad’s birthday and was a very enjoyable day. Napa is beautiful with all the wineries. We are lucky to have other wine growing areas with lots of wineries closer to us now again. It makes for a lovely warm weather day to visit a few and have a nice picnic on the grounds.
I’m glad you found the Laborador forum when Maxx was a puppy. Forums are such a good way to connect with people with similar interests. I joined one on cataract surgery before I had mine and I gained a huge amount of information. I don’t know what I would do if this forum ever disappeared. I depend on it so much for support and encouragement. It’s probably a good idea to keep in touch by email with a couple of people here, to have another way to connect in case something were to happen to this forum and piece together another.

Cinque, thank you for posting that Twitter link from Marty Fields. It’s always inspiring to see other people who have been successful on 5:2. I had to laugh at his reply to a question about it, “Standard 5-2 diet. Google it. It’s the easiest of all those sh#!#!y diets.” đŸ˜đŸ€Ł

    Hi everyone

It’s Sunday morning 7:41am and I am being very lazy. I don’t have much to do today so I have just been reading up on the posts and playing on my iPad. Ummm yep I haven’t gotten out of bed yet except to make a cup of tea! I will get up when I have finished writing this.

Cali the tofu did absorb the marinade. I think because the tofu was hot when I put it into the marinade and also it had the cornflour coating on it. I would have liked some garlic and ginger in it too. LJ lime juice sounds yummy as well.

Anzac, glad you kept Maxx. We had a deaf dog (born deaf) that was very bitey when she was a pup. OH would lay with her on his chest and every time she nipped him she would get a little tap on the nose. She grew out of the biting and I’m so glad she did. She looked quite fierce when she got older and people were so scared of her and yet she was the most gentlest dog ever. I remember when she was 3 months old and we were picnicking out in the bush. She caught a little field mouse, didn’t know what to do with it, so she let it go and caught it again! She let it go unharmed.

I went out in our garden yesterday morning and picked all of my overgrown baby spinach. The slugs and snails had been having a feast on it. I had to fill the sink with salty water and put all the spinach in it to get the little pests out. In the end I had to wash each individual leaf just to make sure there was no protein on them and none of their excremement also. We have been having such rainy weather and the snails have been breeding up. I hate killing things, even pests but yesterday I must have killed at least 30 snails and I know there are plenty more out there. I am making a spinach and ricotta/feta roll today. I have never cooked with filo pastry before so it will be a new experience for me.

I hope you all have a lovely Sunday today. I am going to get my lazy self out of bed and go start this spinach roll. Take care all x

    Good Morning everyone,

Hey Quacka, laying in bed here too, and have 5 mins. Nearly called you Q. Didn’t know about the salt water/ protein floating connection. Thanks for the tip.

Maxx is cute and maybe he’ll slow down a little when he’s 2. Imagining raising seeing-eye puppies as an ongoing thing. Labradors are a lovely family dog once they get past the chew everything in sight stage.

Taking some visitors sightseeing today, so some ‘away from home’ food strategies today.

Marty Fields looks great, and younger!

    Onwards and downwards,
    Merry

    Morning All,

Cool but not wet in Melbourne 8:50 am.

Washing is on. It is Sunday Fast Day for me and I can potter around getting more done because I don’t have to think about meals (except for my miso soup: chicken tenderloin thawing, shiitake soaking and baby broad beans from my sisters garden, in the fridge. Done).

Merry! So glad to have you back! It’s a good sign that your clothes still feel ok.

Suz, it sounds like a fun weekend. Very tricky when food and socialising and celebrations all go together. Hope you figure out some good strategies: either for avoiding too much next time, or having a good post-conference regime to follow.

Thanks Cali, I had an easy day yesterday, and my daughter cooked me lunch, vegetable stirfry with tiny dumplings and silken tofu dusted with cornflour and fried. Gorgeous! (But not marinated after frying, Quacka 😉 )

That was a great comment from Marty Field in his twitter feed!

Anzac, I am so glad the Labrador forum saved Maxx!

Quacka, I feel like you about snails. I hate killing them, but I hate them destroying my garden. Your spinach sounds like it is at a similar stage to my silverbeet. Mine is about to bolt! I will let one plant go to seed in the hope it starts self seeding through my garden… Although I would really prefer rainbow chard, maybe I will harvest them all and plant it next year.

Good luck with the filo pastry, I just love it, and spinach and cheese must be the best combination ever.

Washing is ready to be hung out.

    Best wishes to everyone.

Hello all. I won’t even try to answer everyone’s post, but want to say how your concern and warmth has helped through this difficult time. My OH can’t believe that he (and I) are receiving the kindest of messages from as far away as Tasmania, Western Australia, Melbourne, South Australia and even the USA .
There is no real improvement since the emergency appointment last Tuesday. We saw the surgeon again on Friday – still no change. OH has had glaucoma for a very long time, and had a drain inserted ages ago to relieve the pressure, but it recently failed. When his sight deteriorated, he was referred to a specialist surgeon who operated to free the scarring. The hope was the wound would then scar just a little and this would hold the pressure at a good level , but this isn’t happening. In the meantime my poor love can’t watch tv, can’t read. Thank goodness for his Ipad and for podcasts (and for the ABC and Conversations).
I’m reading and will post when I can – I know you’ll understand if I am a bit self-obsessed at the moment. I do find this forum so entertaining and interesting, so will echo what others have said recently. Thank goodness for it!

So sorry to read this, Lindsay. Thinking of you and miss your posts but completely understand that it’s a very difficult time for you both.

Hi,Cinque. The canary symbol is a good one. Up until this year, I was the canary for my sister & could warn her when she should put on her mask. Now I need one too. I’m glad that I am not reacting as badly as I did back in March as I don’t want to be there again. I think my canary abilities are returning to me again.
Cali- I really don’t know when I’ll get to California, but that would be lovely. We have a friend who alternates between Cal. & Tas each year. She’s a friend of our son’s really. They go to so many music festivals. She’s lovely!
Once again I see California being progressive re banning certain toxic chemicals 🙂
LJ- I know when I am being affected by toxic chemicals as I get the symptoms, like brain fog & shakiness, headache etc, whether I can smell anything or not. My first instinct then is to get the heck away, but that is not always possible. It is much easier when you can smell something as it gives you a chance to hold your breath until you can escape.
Anzac- thanks for your comments. I was having a far from positive day yesterday & you cheered me up immensely.
That was an attempt at a catch up. I know I’mnot great at this.
Hi to all the SH’ers & a special hi to Lindsay & your husband. I really hope that things improve for him soon.
This is a warm & supportive forum & I’m glad that I have found it again. While I may not post often I read every day & enjoy hearing about everyone’s day-to-day lives. I’ll be with my sister in Victoria during the week & she can’t tolerate EMR, so I will be using my phone sparingly.

    Hi again

Lindsay I am praying for a good outcome for your OH. Thing of you both x

Hi Merry, it’s fine to call me Q. I actually don’t mind at all 🙂

Well the filo pastry cooking is not going to happen today. I didn’t realise that it takes four hours to defrost and it is quite cool here today so may have taken even longer. I thought it would be like puff pastry. I have made the mixture though so will be putting it in puff pastry and making triangles instead. I only made a small mix so I can only make a few triangles and then there will be none left for tomorrow. If there is any left OH can take them to work. I don’t need that temptation on a FD lol

There is a very noisy bird here at the moment. I think it is a cuckoo. It carries on calling all the time and woke us up well before dawn this morning. My OH is making me laugh at his comments about it. He wants to go find it and we’ll never mind I won’t tell you what he wants to do to it!! Lol

Have a great day all x

    Sunday morning, 21C, rain forecast

Good morning. Thanks for the explanation on WFH which I got the wrong way round. No I’d never heard of it, probably too isolated having done it for years! In Australia, I think it would be possible to hold a complete conversation in acronyms.

Too bad I can’t get your snails for our lizards.

Merry, I know – there are people who repeatedly give homes to labs in the pre-training period for becoming guide dogs. We almost did it but, luckily, someone warned us how destructive they can be as young pups. As adult dogs, they are frequent visitors to vet clinics because they have another trait – eating anything in sight.

Anzac, that sounds like a marvellous trip. I’d love to go to Cuba. OH and I and another couple almost made it about 25 years ago when we were living in California and Americans were forbidden from visiting. We were going via Mexico but it all became too complicated.

Cinque, your FD meals sound tasty. I’m having one of the kippers that I bought weeks ago. I finally managed to get my glasses, the tin and a calculator in the same place at the same time. It gave the nutritional value for a serving size in Kj which I have to convert accurately for a FD (no random dividing by 4). The tin contains 200gm but a serving size is 75gm. How stupid is that? So two people can enjoy a tin with 50gm left over to waste or three people can share it but they won’t each get a full serving size. Perhaps one is a child so they get less – assuming a child would eat kippers. Or one greedy person can consume the entire tin. I’ll be having 100gm with 80gm steamed asparagus. Hoping the remainder will last until Wednesday’s fast? And that I still like them. And that they don’t stink up the fridge.

CalifD, I accept your challenge. You set the terms. Quite surprised to still be under 60kg today after Friday’s wake and then a neighbour coming round with some delicious home made treat yesterday as a thank you for some work we did at her house.

LJ, yes I guess being able to keep a secret is a pre-requisite for being a spook. His daughter didn’t even know what he did for a living when they were growing up as the children were a kidnap risk. He’d often spoken about his army days in India but nothing beyond that. He carried a fancy leather attachĂ© case which could have been a clue.

Quacka, in keeping with the spy theme, I think ‘Q’ is an excellent name. Only Merry would come up with that.

Cate, have a nice trip. What is EMR please? Electronic Media Something?

11:05am Sun, Adelaide, a beautiful calm sunny day.

Lots of posts, I’ll try and get to everyone, but apologies in advance if I miss an individual response.

Lindsay, thankyou so much for letting us know how things are going. We will continue to hope for an improvement.

Anzac, glad you had such a good NFD. It can be so easy, I find, for them to get a bit overindulgent. Don’t worry about longs posts or discussions that have nothing to do with 5:2. We all do this, and I think it helps build the friendly supportive forum that we have here. We get to know each other a little better with the off topic stuff.

Cali, I have no doubt that new products release chemicals, I just wish I could smell so I’d be more wary. My best friend can smell all sorts of things that I can’t. She always complains about the awful smell of mdf (the pressed wood sheeting that you mentioned). There is apparently a low chemical version that you can get (at much greater cost of course). I know she sourced this for all of their built in wardrobes.

Cate, enjoy your time with your sister.

Q, thanks for the tip on the salty water as I too have bugs invading my leafy greens. I have also resorted to carefully inspecting and washing every leaf of spinach and lettuce. Enjoy your spinach crop. I’ve picked so much of mine lately that I’m going to have to give it a bit of time to recover before I can have more.
After the discussion of tofu it inspired me to take some out of the freezer for tonight’s FD stirfry.
Next time you are looking for filo, check the supermarket fridge area – there is usually a refrigerated filo available that keeps for about a month – no defrosting required. I switched from the frozen one to this as soon as I noticed it was available – much more convenient.

Merry, enjoy your sightseeing day. I hope your mobile food goes to plan.

Cinque, I’m joining you in a FD. I see you have your standard miso soup. Enjoy those broad beans – such a lovely vegetable and only available when you grow your own it seems.
I have some tofu thawing, which I will squeeze the water out of and then crumble. I’m using it in a stirfry with broccoli, capsicum, snow peas and konjac noodles.

Thin, I think EMR is electromagnetic radiation. It can come from many things, but living close to mobile phone towers and electricity sub-stations are usually the sources of most concern I think. Our electronic devices contribute as well.
Thin, I also get a bit irate at some of the stupid serving sizes. I find it completely useless info and am so glad that they have to provide the 100g/ml info on our labels. I think the serving sizes has more to do with how they want to market their product than anything else.
Here’s hoping you and Cali both make it to your desired 58kg.

My NFD yesterday was the best in quite a while. I ate nothing that wasn’t on my food plan for the day and I wasn’t battling hunger or cravings which was so helpful.
I was reminded how much a good night’s sleep helps me manage my eating. I find it very difficult to control NFD eating if I’ve had a poor night’s sleep.

Enjoy the remainder of your Sunday everyone. Cali enjoy Sat pizza & movie night.

    Hello again,

Lindsay, thanks for the update, and I am so sorry that the news is no improvement. It is very hard and so frustrating for Mr L. I am glad he has you. I share his choice in podcasts!
I hope that each day gets easier, especially if it involves improvement in eyesight. I am afraid my candles aren’t doing their job, but I will persist! Here they are: https://imgur.com/a/BQGITep

Cate, warning! 29C forecast for Melbourne tomorrow! Bring your board shorts!

Quacka, let the filo defrost slowly in the fridge. I am with LJoyce, preferring to buy it unfrozen, it so easily gets a bit of dampness on it as it thaws and that makes it go soggy and stick together. So if you have a hard time with it this time, know it is the filo pastry’s fault and not yours!

I’m so glad others noted and commented on your salty water tip. I’d missed it. It is such a good one!

Enjoy the kippers Thin. Put them in a container in a container in a container so they don’t stink out your fridge!

LJoyce, I think lack of sleep is my greatest enemy too (except maybe sugar) for making me get the munchies. Fingers crossed we both have a great sleep tonight.

Well, Fast Day is just about half over! Time for another cup of tea.
Cheers to fellow Sunday Fasters and to everyone else having an enjoyable NFD eating food, not too much, mostly plants. 🙂

“Cate, warning! 29C forecast for Melbourne tomorrow! Bring your board shorts!”
    Eek! Thanks, Cinque 🙂

Thanks for Cate’s acronym explanation LJ – I wasn’t even close. Lovely for we three to be fasting together again. I do love my Sunday fasts. I made a new batch of cauliflower soup earlier and, by the same I’ve blended it, divided it into FD portions and re-heated today’s, it will be 2pm. Cinque, pretty candles. The kippers last 3 days once opened according to the microscopic print on the packet so they will be wrapped and re-wrapped as you suggest ready for Wednesday. If I like them. I do like the spinach/ricotta combo too.

    5:46pm Sun, Adelaide

I’ve just eaten my large yummy FD stir fry. The tofu in it was delicious as I was able to squeeze out all of the water and then marinate it in garlic, ginger and tamari for a few hours. The final stir fry was so tasty.

I have heard of using frozen tofu as a mince substitute – just thaw, squeeze thoroughly and then crumble. I haven’t ever done that for bolognese, or chilli con carne or even burgers, but I will definitely give it a go. Given how the tofu responded to being stir fried, I’m pretty confident it will work very well in the first two dishes as a meat substitute. The burgers will need something to bind them together – maybe some mashed legumes.

I had an easy day and apart from the stir fry and many cups of tea I just had a very small banana early afternoon.

Hope the other fasters have had an easy day and the non-fasters have enjoyed their food choices.

Sorry thin. I missed that- was on my phone! I don’t like using acronyms usually. There are a lot of people who have MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivities) who also can’t tolerate EMR (electromagnetic radiation). I used to think it was nonsense I must admit but have found my phone goes haywire sometimes after I have had a reaction to fragrance. My sister reacts very strongly! We were asked once if we would consider having a phone tower on our land & I am so glad I said no.
Thanks, LJ. I’m looking forward to seeing my sister, but very nervous of the actual travel.

Cate, are you afraid of flying? Or is it what you might encounter along the way?

LJ, last night, I added some small brown lentils to substitute for some of the mince in our spag bol. OH wasn’t keen on the idea but I thought it was good. Perhaps, I’ll mash them next time because he’d never notice if he didn’t see them. And I had zucchini spaghetti from my vegetti spiraliser so it was a fairly healthy meal for me.

You’re all talking about frozen tofu. The kind I buy lasts a very long time in the fridge. Do you buy it frozen or is this what you’re doing with it after opening the packet? I’ve never thought about freezing it.

Yes thanks LJ, it’s been a very easy FD so far. I’ll let you know how I go with the kippers – I always loved them when I lived in the UK but haven’t had them for years and it might be a gamble for a FD. Especially after Penguin appeared here to tell us that the tinned ones are a last resort for him.

Merry, if you’re still in touch with Penguin, Intesha and Joffy, please say hello from me.

Thin, It’s just normal tofu that you buy refrigerated from the supermarket. You can use it fresh or freeze it. The texture changes when you freeze it. I think it was Cali who described it as a sponge, and it really does look like a sponge that you could squeeze when you see a block of tofu that has been frozen then thawed. I do exactly that, squeeze it until no more water comes out – I think you lose three quarters of the weight once you are done, but what’s left now has the capacity to absorb some liquid.
I find plain tofu uninteresting and bland, so they key to me liking it is to get it to absorb flavours.
I must admit that I don’t usually plan to freeze tofu, but if I buy a block I usually only want half of it that week, so I generally freeze the rest so that I’m sure it won’t go to waste.

Thin- I’m not scared of flying at all. I’m scared that I’ll have another major reaction to fragrance in a confined space, where I won’t be able to get outside. I’ll try to wear my mask.

Cate, all the best for tomorrow then.

Thanks LJ for the tofu info.

The kippers were really tasty and I could easily have been that greedy person who ate more than two servings. I didn’t notice any bones. Psychologically, it was a miserable portion on a plate with 5 spears of asparagus. But I had faith that, being protein, I would feel full. And so far so good although I’ll definitely be having a frozen banana later and maybe a spoonful of cottage cheese before bed. I probably wouldn’t plan this again for a FD at home (after Wednesday) but it’s a great option for next time I’m travelling.

    Good morning,
Cate, best wishes for an uneventful flight.

Thin, read your post and made kippers on toast for breakfast. Wonderful way to break my fast. Miso the cat was very pleased to get most of the brine. And the left overs are in a container in a container in a container. (The last container is the fridge, but hopefully the middle container will hold that powerful fragrance.)

Glorious morning here and the forecast temperature is adjusted slightly, to 28C, hopefully I won’t be wilting too much at the end of the day.

Using that frozen, thawed and squeezed tofu, crumbled as mince is a great idea, I can just see how well it would work.

The garden keeps calling me this weather, but there isn’t that much more I can do at the moment. My seedlings are still going well (I think I have beaten the cheeky things that wanted to eat some basil) and the tomatoes I planted from seed have been potted up. Today I will pot up a self sown pumpkin seedling for my friend. Oh, and sort out the compost bins. Yep, there is always something to do in a garden.

Well, it was the easiest Fast Day I’ve had for ages. No idea why, but I am very happy.

Wishing those who are fasting today an easy one too.
Special good wishes to the Lindsays.

    7:29am Mon, Adelaide
    Good morning SHs

Early start for me. For some reason I awake before 5am and couldn’t get back to sleep.

Cinque, I’m also thinking of doing a little gardening today.
I need to start putting more activity back into my days and I became extremely sedentary while I was sick.

Thin, I don’t think oily fish is a choice I’d be making regularly on a FD either because of the calories.

Cate, I hope you you have a safe and fragrance free trip.

It sounds like all of the Sunday fasters had a good FD. Good luck to all the Monday fasters.

LJ, I too woke early – 4am for me. After 2 hours, I’ve given up trying to get back to sleep and made my first coffee. A cool 20C forecast here in Perth.

Cinque, I’m pleased that you and Miso enjoyed the kippers for breakfast. How’s his training going?

Yes, easy peasy Sunday fasting! Handing the baton over to the Monday fasters …. go girls!

Monday fast for me – I need to get back to my routine, in the face of this very difficult situation. A dreadful night last night, with my OH in terrible pain and me totally unable to help him.
My daughter left yesterday for her first work trip away since she was pregnant with her first, 6 years ago. When the school decided a few weeks ago that today would be a pupil free day, we volunteered to have the 5 year old, never dreaming the situation would be as it is with my OH. I was meant to be at work this afternoon, but have called in sick…my first sick day in 4 years…but my OH is in no condition to look after the 5 year old (and of course I couldn’t leave him). So this morning I was up early to care for the girls and get the 2 year old ready for kindy (my SIL leaves early) and am now taking a minute to post. SIL was quite willing to take the day off work too, but really she’s no trouble and I wouldn’t have gone to work anyway.
Thank you for the candles Cinque. Very kind.

    Monday 10.45am

    Good morning everyone

Well its FD again for me and I really feel like I need it today. Yesterday turned out a disaster for food choices (my spinach and cheese triangles were the healthiest thing I ate all day and that is saying something!!) I won’t tell you what I ate (out) for dinner but needless to say my scales are showing it today. Dinner was very salty and I drank about 1.5 litres of water before bed and then another 1.25 litre bottle during the night so I know some of the weight is salt induced water retention. It’s all good because my FD today will go some way to sorting it all out and if not, my Wednesday FD will definitely fix it.

I am having my 2nd cup of black coffee and feeling very positive for the day.

Cinque its so nice to hear your FD was an easy one and it’s great you are feeling happy.
thin I eat canned mackerel fillets some times and am surprised by the calories in them. I think they are good for me and I like eating them so the calories are not going to stop me. You are brave having them on a FD though!

I am having a piece of pork for dinner with a good amount of left over spinach from the garden. I think I will lightly saute it and then put some garlic through it. As it is also Asparagus season at the moment I will be having some char grilled asparagus. I need to eat it while it is Australian and in season.

Hope everyone is having a lovely day so far and all the best for us on a FD x

Lindsay still praying for your OH 🙂

Oh I’ve missed so many posts . . . lovely to have a virtual catch-up this morning. Too much to respond to!

Lindsay, so very sorry that the difficult season continues. Trusting for better days ahead!

    Sending good wishes to all!

    Good morning!

Oh no Lindsay, I’m so sorry for what you and your OH are going through. I hope things improve soon…really soon.

So many lovely posts and a bit busy at work so I’m sorry I can’t respond to you all individually, but I really enjoyed reading them

I was a bit sleep deprived yesterday (thanks Maxx) so didn’t make good food choices. But compared to how I would have acted a few weeks ago I am ok with it. The scales stayed the same as Friday morning so that is in fact my aim for weekends. Lose during the week and maintain on the weekend (for now anyway). We also went for some nice long walks and that always helps combat the bad food/wine choices

FD today and going well. Hope everyone else doing FD today is also having a good one

FD complete although feeling a little hungry tonight.

Just had piece of pork and OH made a yummy spinach chick pea dish with the left over ricotta. When I worked out the calories I was happy to see the calories were not as much as I imagined them to be.
Total calories for the day 440 so I have a few left if I really need to eat something.

LJ (and any other bakers) I have a question.
OH likes to eat biscuits or chocolate after dinner so I said I would make him some cookies so that I can control the ingredients. The ingredient list in some of those biscuits is disgusting. I made some jam drops for him yesterday but they didn’t quite work out. They flattened right out and didn’t retain the cookie shape like they were meant to. Luckily the jam stayed in most of them. Do you have any idea why?

    Quacka,
How much biscuits spread when baked usually depends on two key things:
    – the most important is the ratio of fat+liquids to flour. The softer your dough is, usually the higher the ratio of fat+liquids is, and the more the biscuits will spread. For a biscuit to spread less you need a stiffer dough. This means working a bit more flour into the dough.
    – the other thing that has a lesser impact is how cold the dough is when it’s baked. When I’m baking the christmas shortbread I chill each tray before I bake it to slow down the spreading. Basically this gives the heat of the oven a chance to set the edges of biscuits before they have heated up enough for the butter in the middle to melt and spread out.

    My tips are:
For a shortbread style biscuit (which contain butter, plain flour and sugar and little else) you need to use incredibly soft butter, otherwise it won’t absorb enough flour and when heated it will spread. My family shortbread recipe has 8oz butter, 4oz caster sugar and 14oz plain flour. I can only just get this amount of flour worked into the butter. You can roll the dough into balls, or roll out flat and cut shapes. My preference is to roll it into a log, chill wrapped in plastic, then cut into discs.
These take approx 30 mins at 150C fan forced.

For a softer biscuit (which usually contain SR flour and also eggs), you have more leeway as the egg should help stabilise the biscuit to slow the spreading.
I’ll give you another family recipe that I think is fail proof. This is my mum’s cornflake biscuit recipe. I actually make these as “naked cornflake biscuits”, because I don’t roll them in a coating of cornflakes.
4oz butter, 4oz sugar, 1 egg, 8oz SR flour, 4oz mixed dried fruit, vanilla essence, a few chopped nuts are optional. Cream butter and sugar, mix in egg and essence, then work remaining ingredients in. Roll teaspoon sized balls and place on lined baking tray. Bake at 180C for 12-15min. Without their cornflake jackets they look like little rock cakes.

On the bright side, even when they spread too much, they still usually taste nice, so I’m sure your husband will enjoy the jam drops.

    Hope this helps.
PS, if your scales don’t measure ounces, 1oz = 30 grams
