  • Good evening all,

Sybs and I had our final morning walk for awhile this morning. An hour goes so fast and it is lovely walking around the area we are thinking of walking to the Esplanade to see how long that might take.

Sybs left this afternoon on her flight to Indonesia and she will return the day I fly out to Singapore, therefore we will not catch up until I am back in late March.

I have been reading all the posts but there is so many of them!!!! So will not try to comment.

I have also been busy with bookwork and house tidying/decluttering as well.

Lots of things happened with us over the weekend too and again this weekend we will be busy with Cairns Taiko performances.

Hope everyone is having a good week.

    catch up again soon

Hi all. Like Julie, have been reading all the posts but haven’t had a chance to reply. We are in Hong Kong on our way to Vietnam. There’s been a cold snap …but nothing like Europe has been experiencing. Penguin hope you are relishing the warm weather. Happy holidays to you and Mrs P.
I’ve given my FDs away for the few weeks we’re away, but am being circumspect. Our friends here are vegans, so we’ve been eating our main meal at lunchtime, and just a bowl of soup in the evenings. They know their way around all the vegetarian restaurants in this part of town so we’ve eaten well, but very lightly. I am not tempted by the hotel buffet…although I am only a few days in so that may change. Certainly the pastries don’t interest me at all, and nor do the eggs and all that go with them. I followed the Chinese lead this morning and had salad vegetables and some fruit. It was particularly nice because someone else had gone to all the trouble of peeling and slicing it so beautifully.
Hope you are all doing well.

    Good morning,
It is a glorious morning here. A cool night and a crisp clear day. It will be like this all week. Only complaint: no rain (and I wouldn’t mind the top temps being a few degrees lower, but oh well).

Sybs, good reminder about The Bureau. I watched the first couple of series when they aired and I have been meaning to get into it again. Bon yoyage!

So glad your second Fast Day went well Cali. Good luck not snacking today!
I’m doing the same (not snacking today).

After my midnight snack I wasn’t hungry for breakfast yesterday morning. I had a coffee and shop with one friend, who doesn’t eat lunch, and by the time she headed home I only had time to rest before going for a coffee with another friend, so I decided to make yesterday a fast day. I was very hungry by the time I got home, and had a normal sized meal, but I am pretty sure it was less than 800 calories all day (if the midnight snack was counted in the day before 😉 ) AND I am going to a community food lunch on Thursday (to see how they are doing it), so I don’t need to worry about how it spoils my Thursday Fast Day.

Hi Arel, Thinking of you as I lug around watering cans! Cheers for a good week!

Hi JJulie, thanks for popping in. Decluttering and Taiko drumming sounds like a grand life! Keep on keeping on!

Hi Lindsay, wonderful travels. Rug up and slurp Pho! So glad you popped in.

LJoyce, is it tiling today? I hope it is easily done and satisfying.

Morning Thin, I nearly decided to fast with you today, but then yesterday happened! Have a good day!

Oh dear my coffee is all gone. I’ll go and potter around while I decide if I can have a second pot. Cheers all.

Good morning Cinque, don’t worry I’ll hold the fasting fort for Wednesday.

Safe travels Lindsay and Sybs. And JJulie later in the month.

CalifD, well done with the B2B. Isn’t it interesting about hunger on day 2? It proves that hunger, or what we perceive as hunger, can be distracted and doesn’t have to be satiated by food. Good job.

I’m afraid I’m going to be no advocate for the Longevity Book. It’s true that I have read some very interesting information within its pages. But I’m afraid I find its message to be all over the place and very poorly organised. I have found much of it very repetitive. Yesterday, I was certain I’d read an entire section already and thought I was losing the plot – so to speak – but flipped back to discover several pages of the same content using different words. It’s as if the notes from his life’s work fell on the floor and someone picked them up and randomly started binding them. I really dislike his premise throughout the book that he’s the only guy with any credibility. As I say, the content is often interesting and thought-provoking but his style turns me right off. Sorry but I can’t recommend it. Will keep ploughing through to get to the diet recommendations (in an attempt to get my money’s worth).

    Hi everyone

The Sun is trying to shine today, been raining most of the night.
Just home from an energetic yoga session – our teacher feels we have all come on so well, it’s time to up the pace – I’ve found spots in my body that haven’t been mobile for a long time.

Because I don’t eat breakfast prior to yoga, today is now a FD instead of tomorrow, as our Probus group is going on a Mystery Coach Tour to who knows where and not sure what food will be available. Always a fun day.

Nice to see JustJulie and LindsayL back again, and I’m enjoying reading about your busy lives.

Off to visit Dad this morning. Will take it easy this afternoon as didn’t sleep well last night, after working yesterday. Early to bed tonight maybe!

Enjoy whatever you are all getting up to and bye for now!

    Good morning SHs,

Lindsay, Sybs, JJulie & Penguin, enjoy your travels. I will just have to live vicariously through your reports of interesting places. My dwindling savings are all allocated to house projects at the moment.

Arel, Good to hear that even a yoga class can get muscles working. I do my own thing with yoga at home and for me it’s more about stretch, flexibility and balance.

Thin, thanks for the review of the book. I was trying to stick to my frugal “no more book purchases” embargo so I haven’t bought it. I was undecided whether I would eventually – I’m thinking with so many interviews and info online from Dr Longo I was wondering if it was necessary.

Cinque, I like those impromptu FDs, where you realise you’ve done one without planning to. Today was going to be tiling, but as the painters have decided they want to do all the ceilings tomorrow, I’ve decided that tasks that confine me to a single place will make life easier for them as I won’t get underfoot. So tomorrow I will tile the kitchen and scrape out grout from the bathroom wall tiles. I’m having the entire morning off today, as I’ve been out for a haircut this morning and have a physio appointment at 12:30. I’ve decided to tackle the hallway closet this afternoon. I need to get everything out and sorted, throw some things away (hopefully) and then scrub all the shelves. I suspect I’ll have to paint them as well as they look a bit manky.

With the painters working hard outside, I feel a bit lazy at the moment, sitting here with a cuppa and typing on the laptop. But I’ll try not to let it trouble me too much.

Relax with some white tea LJ, you deserve it!

Arel, you are truly an inspiration making the most of all that retirement has to offer in your environs!

OH and I have just walked for a couple of hours to visit the newly built stadium ($1.8b). It’s quite humid but the temps are back in the low 30s now. Yesterday only reached 36C but felt very hot and we had the air-con running all day and night.

Cinque, I hope the visit to the community cafe is inspirational – do you expect to be opening Yam Daisy soon? My friend and I found a new cafe on Monday because our regular was closed for the public holiday despite saying it was open on-line. Our new one has truly fabulous coffee, reasonable sized cups and a great atmosphere. Run by some really friendly Indians which is unusual (not the fact that Indians are friendly but that they were running a coffee shop with a bakery attached). I can’t wait to go back.

Thin, there’s your silver lining – finding a even better coffee shop because your regular was closed. Yes I know, I’m being Pollyanna again.
Now that I’m back from the physio with a well kneaded neck, I am relaxing with another cup of tea, although it’s French Earl Grey not white tea. Still on my FD, but I just had a small banana (I have minestrone in the fridge for dinner). I will summon up the energy to attack that hallway cupboard shortly – I know my energy reserves must he lurking around here somewhere.

Wherever my energy reserves were lurking, I failed to find them. I did nothing but make a few calls to contractors this afternoon.

LJoyce, you are amazing with all your work, and for keeping at it so relentlessly. Lately, when I’m feeling like procrastinating over some household job, I think about you and that pushes me into getting started. Sometimes getting started is the main thing for me. Once I start moving, I keep moving for a while. It’s all about inertia I guess. 😁

Thin, my thoughts are the same on the Longevity book. I had a hard time getting through it all. The basic premise on the water fasting is highly interesting, but much of that has been discussed for years, by other researchers as well as Longo. The FMD I’m not so sure about. I’m not convinced that a low protein, high fat and vegetable diet is recognized as a total fast by the body. I read that a lot of blood tests showed better test results, but I’ve had similar test results after doing the 5:2 plan for months. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like it all to be true.

Lindsay, Sybs and Penguin, enjoy your travels. You all seem to be going to beautiful and interesting places. Take lots of pictures and bring back lots of memories!

My B2B was to accommodate a busy week’s travels but also to destroy the evidence of a few days of snacking. Sunday morning I was at 60.4 kg and this morning I was at 58.1. It’s nice to know that it’s possible to lose a few quick kgs.

Hi North – hope its not too cold for you all.

I have been doing a 8pm – 12midday fast, Daily and eating mindfully between, not sure what the opinions on this is?

But I feel it has readied me the training on 5:2 which I will commence next Tuesday – it’s my busiest work day.

    Hi Nancy,
    Welcome here 🙂
Thanks for writing a profile, and what an interesting one. Hmm, not the only person who has found that alcohol is their downfall.
Congrats for the 16:8 you have been doing and hopefully you will love 5:2.
We will be cheering you on Tuesday!

LJoyce, I hope you have rested well and mindfully today.

Arelkade, congrats on the yoga. Enjoy your mystery trip tomorrow!

Thin and Cali, thanks for being the book guinea pigs and saving me the trouble.

Cali, 58.1 is a lovely number.

    Thin, your cafe sounds lovely!
It has been hard with YamDaisy, all the impetus we had has fallen away so we are cranking up from nothing again. We need to get a good legal structure and lots of funding to open the cafe proper, and we will get there!
But we want to start by getting access to a good industrial kitchen and make meals for people with frailty, chronic illness, stress etc that we will access through community workers. Once we have got our hand in we will sell meals and hopefully be able to subsidise meals for people who can’t afford even the low price we need to charge. then we will have publicity and support and growth and open a cafe! And then more.
The group we are seeing tomorrow are these guys: http://www.urcommunitytimebanking.org.au/about-us/. Their emphasis is on cheap meals (but make them as healthy as they can), while our emphasis is on healthy meals (and make them as cheap as we can). We will see what we think of their operation and if we might work with them.

    Evening all

Arelkade you are very nearly right, at least as far as the drinks and munchies go. The weather here is not up to the usual standard – we have had some wind and rain. However, the rain is at least 20 C warmer than the snow we left in England so we can live with this and the forecast is improving. We met some people we only see here (Here is Madeira) and went out for a splendid and very reasonably priced meal last night. Only 0.6 kg heavier today. If this continues, and it probably will, some serious fasting will be in order when we get home.

Good morning everyone. It’s been nice reading your posts. I like the distraction of coming here when I’m on a FD and I’m at that 3pm ‘hit the wall’ stage of the day.
I’m back down to the weight I was before I had my wobbly and stopped doing the FDs. I find it so encouraging to myself when I can see the results on that scale, although my weight still fluctuates as I do daily weigh ins. I really wish I could trust myself and not weigh in every day but I think it helps me to check daily. I don’t let it get me down if the number goes up a bit as I know so many factors play a part in the reading!
I still haven’t made the chicken eggplant tofu curry as we ran out of gas last week and only just got refilled on Tuesday. I bought 2 bottles this time lol. I think I will make it for tomorrow nights dinner so I will let you all know.
Well I hope you all have a lovely day and enjoy whatever you are doing. Bye for now 🙂

Ah Quacka, Those of us who weigh daily live with the variations. Sometimes, like today for me, the reason is pretty obvious, but as long as the general trend is down we are winning. The problem with scales is that they vary. The ones I am using for the next couple of weeks are technically much cleverer than those at home, but on arrival I found I weighed five pounds or 2 and a bit kg more than when I left home. I am still using them daily – even if I don’t trust or like them, they will still tell me if I am going up or down – up today. The next problem is what I do with that information.

NancyHolland. Because we have always eaten early, my habit on none fast days has become to not eat between 7pm and 12 noon. I find it works very well – not difficult to do if you are not really a breakfast eater and missing a meal automatically reduces your calorie intake. There are conflicting views on skipping breakfast. Valter Longo, whose Longevity Diet is attracting much support thinks we should eat breakfast . There are others, whose research seems equally sound, who think that giving the second tier of gut bugs time to do their work is a good thing. I am with the gut bugs but, as ever, what works for you.

Welcome Nancy! All the best as you embark on 5:2 next week. I’m sure that your 16:8 regime will have helped you on your way to successful fasting. You can find my comments on eating breakfast on the previous page.

I highly recommend a set of travel scales for the daily weighers. I don’t leave home without them. Worth their 700gm weight in gold. I like to mitigate any holiday damage in advance or as I go rather than deal with it when I arrive home – that’s depressing enough as it is without a weight gain!

LJ, you deserved a day off. And BTW, organising contractors IS considered work.

Cinque, you have put so much time and energy into Yam Daisy. I hope it comes to life. Is the other company up and running? I couldn’t find their menus under that section. I hope you can dovetail your respective missions and make it work.

Day after FD for me. I’ve been under 60kg for some weeks now so hoping this might be my new normal. On the other hand, we have a family birthday next week which likely means Indian food and chocolate cake. CalifD, did you get back to 58kg?

A late post for me today, I have been busy making up for taking yesterday off. In fact taking the day off yesterday (which included going to my hairdresser for an overdue haircut) turned out to be the most valuable thing I did all day. I have 4 damaged floor boards in the lounge room that need to be replaced and I’d had rung so many carpenters and builders trying to find someone who would do such a small job and quickly. Nobody was interested and I was trying to figure out how to do it myself. My hairdresser mentioned that her son was a carpenter and gave me his number. He came here today to look at the floor and after a few phone calls said he could get the new floorboards and do the work for $230. Not only that, because I want it done fast he’s coming here this weekend to do the job. I feel like my guardian angel (or is it my hairdresser) came through for me today.

Today I had to remember how to tile. I quickly realised it’s a bit like baking. First you mix the adhesive powder with water and make sure it’s not lumpy. Then spread it over the wall, like icing a cake. Then decorate neatly with tiles. It was relatively straightforward. I also got enough grout scraped out of all the other wall tiles in the bathroom and kitchen so that I can put a skim coat of fresh white grout there when I grout my new tiling. Have to wait for the adhesive to dry completely first though. Now that I’ve removed grout from the shower alcove I’m confined to baths until I’ve regrouted.

Cali, 2.3kg from a B2B fast is pretty impressive. I hope travel and business dinners doesn’t undo it too quickly.

Nancy, welcome to our Southern Hemisphere group. You aren’t alone in following a 16:8 eating pattern daily. I’m yet another who does that as I rarely feel like eating breakfast. I hope you find 5:2 suits you. I did for 5 months to lose a few kilos and have stayed with it since to help with maintenance.

Quacka, I believe that the frequency you should weight is as often as is motivating rather than frustrating. It’s a really personal thing that each person has to work out for themselves. You aren’t alone in being a daily weigher, we have a few others who find it immensely helpful. Sadly I’m not one of them as the number on the scales can all too easily adversely affect my mood and unfortunately my food behaviour.

Thin, I hope you can keep your new normal too. Enjoy the Indian meal and birthday cake. As you have reminded me, one of the reasons for sticking with 5:2 in maintenance is so that you enjoy enjoy a birthday dinner, know the FDs will balance it out.

Cinque, I agree with Thin. I hope that all the time energy and hope that you’ve put into YamDaisy helps it get off the ground.

Penguin, Sounds like you aren’t letting the rain get you down – that’s true British spirit. I hope you get some sunshine soon.

I decided to weigh myself this morning. I’ve hit a new low of 74.6kg, which surprised me. This is even lower than my goal range of 75-78 that I tried to stay within in 2015-16. Looks like the home reno fitness program is still working.

Good job with the new PB, LJ! Fantastic news. And CalifD, I somehow missed your final paragraph about getting down to 58.1 after the B2B – also great news. Well done both of you. 😆

Thanks Thin. I find it ironic that when I was almost at my original 78kg goal I got stuck on a plateau at 79kg that lasted 5 months despite fasting twice a week. Yet now when I’m not trying to lose more weight my body decides to be contrary get lighter. I’m happy to be lighter, just bemused that it happens when I am not trying rather than when I was trying hard to lose that last kilo.
I wonder if the more I try deliberately to control what I weight, my food behaviours pose challenges that don’t occur when I’m accepting of what I weigh. Something for me to consider.

    Good morning,
Glorious here, and I have pumpkin bread on the rise and lentils soaking to make lentil dip: preparing lunch for my daughter and grandies and then I will babysit the tots this afternoon. So much to do, but I am feeling pretty well, and having a nice space now, drinking coffee and catching up with you lot.

Quakka, Congratulations! Down to your pre-wobbly weight! Weighing daily is your tool, so go for it. Just remember that normal weight varies + or – 2kg daily just because of water retention, so don’t beat yourself up for variations.
I hope you get to make that beautiful curry today. Can’t wait to hear how it goes.

Happy holidays Penguin. We need to start a book on whether you come home lighter, heavier, or just the same!

Thin, cheers for your new normal!

LJoyce, cheers for your hairdresser and her lovely son! Congrats on the tiling. Vertical baking! And yay for your new low. The Renovator’s Diet by LJoyce will be featured on the next series of The Diet Testers!

We checked out that tasting yesterday and found that the cheap meals they are making were mostly pasta with a touch of meat. There were couple of exceptions with a small amount of veggies included, but it made us feel that they were on quite a different track from us and (just between you and me) more hype than substance. So I am feeling more passionate about YamDaisy than ever.

Better head off and prepare the place for the onslaught ;). Cheers everyone!

    Good morning all

Cinque, pumpkin bread sounds delicious. I hope the grandies don’t tire you out quite so much today. It does sound as if the place you went to concentrates on cheap meals rather than healthy cheap meals. It’s easy to pad a meal out with rice or pasta to reduce the cost, but it certainly doesn’t make it a balanced meal.

I watched the second episode of the “Diet Testers” docco last night. I liked it better than episode one. I think the takeouts I got this time was the clear distinction between trying to make a lifestyle change and the madness of fad diets to lose weight in a week. I also found Dr Xand’s experiment on water loss and how it impacts our daily weight fluctuations useful. I knew it, but having it reinforced is good for me, as I still find it impossible to not let the number on the scale affect me, often in quite self-destructive ways.

NFD for me, I’m just finishing my cuppa and have eaten a bowl of bircher muesli before I head off to do lots of errands: hardware store, plumbing supplier, collecting a repaired mirror, replacing a faulty door knob… I’m also thinking of going to some of the larger op shops to look for framed pictures for my walls. Busy day, but nice not to be spending it working on the house.

    Have a good day everyone.

Have a great day with the family Cinque, I hope they don’t wear you out too much! Your pumpkin bread sounds nice. Too bad that the menu wasn’t the healthiest yesterday. A step up from fast food outlets and half price hot X buns at Coles perhaps.

Prompted by a mailbox flyer, OH and I walked round to the local lawns bowls club for the first time last night for the opening of a new weekly live jazz event. It’s been put together by a 91 local resident in the space of about 8 weeks. We almost gave it a miss but so glad we went. The music was superb and there was a guest appearance by a famous violinist who happened to be our DD’s teacher. We met several new locals thanks to the seating configurations. My OH danced with me for the second time since our wedding day! The only downside was that I had a small glass of red wine which I couldn’t finish but felt positively poisoned from toxins for several hours after going to bed. We’ll definitely return but I’ll be sticking to water. So nice to have something like this within walking distance.

LJ, apart from your increased activity, perhaps your loss is just occurring naturally because your behaviours are changed from those more rigid days. I remember that you used to record all your daily intake which you eventually dispensed with. You’re so much more confident about your weight and you know you can trust yourself these days. I think there’s often that underlying fear that we might suddenly gain all the weight back but, as time passes, that fear diminishes and we come to accept that this weight is normal and where we belong. P.S. I have just read your post as I took so long to write mine so perhaps what I wrote isn’t quite accurate. Anyway, who knows where it might lead?

    Hi everyone

Have enjoyed reading all your posts – lots happening, which is good for us all.

Very warm congrats to those that have lost weight, and to those that have met new lows – good on you all. Also congrats to all those not losing but sticking with 5:2 anyway – it does work in ups and downs, and the best thing is, it’s doable; and we have a wonderful support group that helps make it all easier – thank you everyone!

Hope you holiday is going well Penguin – with the weather you put up with prior to going away, I feel you deserve to enjoy whatever you feel like eating, knowing it can be managed on your return home! Bring on the sunshine.

Must go, staying at my Sister’s tonight, home tomorrow.
Enjoy whatever you are getting up to and bye for now!

Another still, cool, clear morning. Filled with the sound of cooing pigeons.

I’ve decided on a Saturday fast day as it will fit well.

Had a lovely time with the little ones yesterday. Spent most of it outside with two tubs of water and dolls to wash. Ended up with the girls in the tubs of course.

LJoyce, I enjoyed the second Diet Testers too. Isn’t it extraordinary though, they do 6 different diets each episode and they are up to series three! The thing in common seems to be to disrupt the usual eating pattern. And it was there the researcher talked about the plus or minus up to 2kg water retention daily.
I saw an ad for the series that they are having in the ABC Catalyst timeslot for the next few weeks and it is Dr Chris and Dr Xand again. I might get sick of those twins at this rate.

You are exactly right about the ‘Feeding Australia’ initiative. You too, Thin.

Thin, what a grand entertainment. It sounds like a lovely community you are living in.

Arelkade, all power to you through the ups and downs. I hope you have had a great time with your sister.

Cali, is your hectic week over?

Well, I am having a quiet day. Fasting. Hennaing my hair. Tidying my desk. Miso soup. Maybe some gentle, gentle yoga.

    Best wishes all

Hope you all have a lovely day too.

Good morning everyone. It is a beautiful morning with the sun shining and it is a Saturday! Yay!
I did my usual weigh in this morning and I couldn’t believe the reading. I had to step off and back on just to make sure it was the same! I am the lightest I have been in 7 years. I feel so amazingly happy with myself.
I love the 5:2 way of eating, I find it easy and it’s something I can stick to. It’s so funny when I tell people that I’m doing this and most of them say ‘oh I could never go without eating all day’ or something along those lines. I always reply with the same answer. I used to be like that. I couldn’t go without eating for 2 hours! I think I ate because I was bored. I want to do this and so I am.
So yesterday was a day off from work. I spent the day cooking. We have a huge amount of chillies from our garden so I made a capsicum and chilli jam. I also made the chicken eggplant and tofu curry which we are eating for dinner tonight. It has a lovely flavour and I’m glad I modified that recipe a little. It says to use 4 tablespoons of oil to roast the eggplant in prior to to adding to the curry. I used one tbsp and I think next time I will use spray oil.
I made some other foods as well which I will spare you the details as I don’t want to make you hungry lol
I have always loved cooking. I also love eating but this ‘diet’ has taught me to control how much I eat and listen to my stomach when it says it is full. I have realised I don’t have to eat all the time!
Anyway enough from me. I hope you all have a lovely day and enjoy whatever you are doing 😀

    Good morning SHs.

Cinque, You get tired of the twins? I don’t believe it for a moment.
I’m joining you in a fast today. It’s technically my third for the week but it suits me better to fast today than tomorrow so I’ve just pulled it forward by a day. I’ve pulled a 1 cup serve of lentil coconut dahl out of the freezer for dinner. If I’m hungry I’ll put some broccoli and cauli on the side to make it a more substantial meal.

Quacka, well done on your new weight low. Our community seems to be on a bit of a roll at the moment with new lows being reached and scales being reasonable. Like you, I always find it helpful to think back to the last time I was this weight. It makes me want to hang onto that new low and not let it slip away again. I also ate from boredom, and habit and to be social and to feed emotions. I think we eat for lots of reason that have nothing to do with being really hungry. It’s really great progress to be in touch with what hunger really feels like for you.
I can imagine a few recipes that will be enhanced by the addition of that capsicum and chilli jam over the coming months.

Cali, as someone who likes putting together elegant platters, I though this might appeal to you: http://www.notquitenigella.com/2018/03/10/herbed-goats-cheese/

My uncle was taken back to hospital yet again yesterday. My aunt is dependent on family help as she still isn’t able to drive herself. So I’m taking her grocery shopping shortly and will drop her at the hospital afterward.

The carpenter is coming this afternoon to replace the damaged flooring in the lounge. It will be such a relief to get that done and not have to do it myself.

I’m hoping to find time this afternoon to do the grouting and silicone, as not being able to use the shower is getting irritating. I can get most of me clean in the bath but my hair needs a wash and I can’t use the hand basin to do it as I’m likely to splash water on tiles that are missing grout.

Hope you all have nice weekend plans. It’s a long weekend here in SA as we have Adelaide Cup (horse race) on Monday. I won’t be going to the races, I’ll probably be punching floor nails and applying putty. I booked a floor sander for later in the week so need to be ready for that. It will be the last big job I have to do, which is a huge relief. One more week and I can move onto cleaning, weeding, hanging curtains and pictures and fluffing pillows. I was worrying about what to hang on the walls as most of my framed pictures have too much gold on their frames to look good on my new grey walls. I went to several of the larger op shops (that also stock homewares) yesterday and found a series of framed botanical fruit prints that I like at $15 each, so I bought all three. I may need to sand and whitewash the varnished frames, but I think they’ll look nice in either the dining area or the hallway.

Well I’d better get moving. Have a nice Saturday everyone.

Quacka, that’s great to hear, well done on your new weight and your reformed way of thinking. Ignore the noise from the naysayers, they don’t wan’t it badly enough. Fasting is nothing. I always find it interesting that I can feel a bit ‘hungry’ towards the end of a FD, yet wake up after that same FD and not feel ‘hungry’ for several more hours. It proves that it’s not necessarily physiological and that what we perceive as hunger doesn’t have to be satiated with food.

Cinque, what a lovely day you had enjoying the girls. I almost brought my FD forward to today as well because OH wants to drive out to an airfield and watch some glider planes and maybe take a flight ourselves tomorrow. But then I thought that activity doesn’t have to involve food and if I don’t get my cauliflower soup, it will just become closer to a water fast. Surely I can handle that with 375 fasts under my diminishing belt. Today would have been a good day to fast as it turns out as I gave my coffee machine its bi-annual clean yesterday and, after I’d ground the beans and frothed the milk, the group head thingy wouldn’t work this morning so OH has it all in pieces on the patio. Tantalising.

LJ, happy to read that you won’t be supporting the horse races. 😆 By ‘floor sander’, do you refer to the machine or the person doing the job? We’ve done that. What a messy job. Fine dust gets into absolutely everything. It’s good to hear that it will be your last big job. Your house must look amazing now. Do you anticipate that you’ve added a substantial amount to your selling price?

DD arrived home from three weeks away at three separate country vet practices. She’s already left for the Saturday job and has some practical work scheduled at that vet hospital next week before flying out to Tasmania on Saturday night to study platypodes which she’s really excited about. We’ve never had anyone from Tas on this thread, have we?

We have more hot days forecast. Only up to 36C so it’s not too bad.

All is quiet next door, the last of the guests left on the holiday Monday tooting their horns as they drove down the street. The last hurrah resulted in the police being called which was a fitting finale to a dreadful summer of disruption. According to other neighbours, the investors have been selling off the furniture all week so it really does appear that they’re going to install long-term tenants. What a relief. Next, we have the City’s draft policy to fight at the end of the month. They want high density living with tourist accommodation embedded in quiet, residential neighbourhoods. As the rest of the world comes to terms with the negative impacts of 10 years of short-stay accommodation on their cities, our council moves to embrace it. At least one councillor owns a short-stay rental and stands to profit from her vote but won’t be recusing herself. If that’s not corruption, it’s definitely a conflict of interest.

Thin, it sounds like you won round one with the council only to be faced with a much bigger war. For once I’m really glad that your heat doesn’t seem to be heading this way. Today is the last day in the high 30s, back to 20s for a week now.
When I said floor sander, I meant machine not person unfortunately. I only have to do the kitchen and the 3 new boards in the lounge and like most small jobs they are relatively expensive to pay someone else to do. As a teenage I helped my father surface floors and apply polyurethane, although I haven’t done it alone or since then. I figure I can remember enough to do one room, thankfully in the rest of the rooms the finish will still be ok with a good wash and oiling. I am heading off to Bunnings in the morning to buy lots of cheap plastic drop sheets so that I can cover all the kitchen cabinets and appliances and also the doorway. That should reduce the amount of clean up I have to do after sanding.
In my area there seems to be two sale differences between a properly modernised and “styled” house and one that hasn’t had that treatment. My town has properties from $500k to $2m and the land size and home size can vary enormously from little 3BRs like mine to mansions with 3 acres, a tennis court and a pool. In my price bracket, the houses that haven’t been updated sell much more slowly and for about $50,000 less. As I’ve spent a whole lot less than $50k on the renovations, the renos should be worthwhile. It should mean a profit on the work I’ve done and a much quicker sale. By the time I’m finished, my recent spend should be just under $15k. If I’d had to pay trades to do all the work I’ve done myself I would have spent at least double or probably more. So although it’s been a struggle at times, I don’t regret doing so much of the work myself.
Sounds like your daughter is getting some really interesting vet placements.

I am at the end of my “early” FD. I had a large iced coffee mid afternoon, made with a little skim milk and lots of pulverized ice. It was a lovely treat on a hot day. For once I felt like iced coffee instead of a pot of tea – that doesn’t happen often. I’ve just had a simple but delicious dinner. I roasted half a bag of frozen broccoli in the air fryer with a little olive oil and some lemon pepper seasoning. I had that with 1 cup of the red lentil & coconut curry that I’d pulled out of the freezer. It was a lovely flavour combination. I’ll definitely do that again.

Reno update: the carpenter was here this afternoon and I now have no rotten floor boards in the lounge, but nice new ones instead. I also worked today – I grouted the new kitchen tiling and regrouted the bathroom and the rest of the kitchen where I’d scraped the old grout out. Then I did my least favourite job – applying silicone to all the tile corners and edges. I find it really difficult not to get the silicone on the bench top or the surface of the tiles. But it’s all done now and tomorrow I can finally use my shower again – about time, I’m starting to feel grimy, despite baths and washes.

I am finally in the mood for a pot of tea, so I think I might go and make one, put my feet up and enjoy it. Although I’d better turn some dripper hoses on first as the plants are drooping a bit after the hot day.

Good, well all that work should pay off handsomely then. My OH can’t stand paying tradespeople for anything that he can do himself. I’m very lucky to be married to someone so handy in so many different areas. I know the man over the back can’t swing a hammer. We had an appraisal today. Things have been stagnant in our part of Perth for a decade but today’s news wasn’t quite so bad and I didn’t get the impression that he was just telling us what we want to hear – we’d made it very clear that we’re not ready to go yet. Still de-cluttering and making little headway despite so much stuff seemingly going out the door.

Just finished a bowl of the latest batch of mung bean stew. I can’t get enough of it. I soaked the beans for 36 hours and I must say they feature better than when just pouring boiling water over them. Last night I made a delicious eggplant dish with thinly sliced baked eggplant rolled up with ricotta cheese and spinach and a tomato sauce. I’m enjoying making more plant-based recipes and the OFMs seem quite happy with less meat. Kitchen closed for me until Monday lunch time.

    Good morning,
Good Fast Day yesterday but a bad night, awake at three. Luckily I dozed more and more deeply towards dawn and then had a good last hour. Didn’t feel hungry so I won’t blame my Fast Day.

    Quakka, big congratulations! http://bestanimations.com/Holidays/Fireworks/fireworks/ba-awesome-colorful-fireworks-animated-gif-image-s.gif
I have had the same thing said to me “Oh I couldn’t do that!” I wonder if they think about it later?
Your preserving and cooking sound wonderful.
These days when a recipe asks me to fry eggplant, I just brush the slices with oil and grill them.

LJoyce, I just loved the link to Nigella’s pretty cheese!
It is a long weekend here too. Moomba! (Labour Day).
Hope your uncle is okay, are they still sorting his meds out? Sending best wishes.
What a productive day you had. Congratulations!

Thin, I hope today is as good a day to fast as yesterday might have been! My sister lives near a gliding club, and loves to see the planes overhead. I hope you get a lovely glide!
Your daughter has such an interesting life!
Good luck with the Council, that policy might have slipped through if you hadn’t been woken up to it.
Hooray for the mung bean stew. I put boiling water and let them sit in it overnight. Of you have made me hungry for it again. Why do I need so many recipe books? My favourite dozen recipes would do me over and over again.

I’m enjoying my first cup of tea for the day, and then it will be breakfast. Cheers all!

I have been picking up the many posts on my phone – lots happening. Since I joined this site I have been watching our TV news of the SH – I hope that the news coming from you is as unrealistically sensational as ours, because it seems to be nothing but floods, droughts, impossible temperatures and dangerous snakes getting into peoples beds!

Quick update from foreign parts. The weather is improving. The week before we got here was even worse with one British idiot, who was old enough to know better, ignoring the barriers, going down to the sea and not been seen again. It has been getting better and next week looks quite reasonable. The idea of opening a book on the weight of the returning Penguin is interesting, but so unpredictable that I would not have a go. The food can be dangerously good.

    Hi everyone

Gorgeous sunny day with milder temperatures today – might go potter in the garden. Autumn is a lovely time of year.

As always, your posts are all wonderful to read – we have all been so busy: sometimes productive with renos and all, sometimes relaxing, sometimes with family, or holidaying, and overall, just enjoying life.

I’m planning on a quiet Sunday as the last week has been full on – I often get times where I just need to be at home and relish the tranquility of an easier day!

Hope you all enjoy whatever you are getting up to and bye for now!

Off to a challenging start to my FD. My coffee machine is still in pieces as OH awaits the part he ordered from Sydney. I found an old plunger but forgot to de-frost my almond & coconut milk and the little frozen tupperware of it exploded in the microwave, wasting much of it. The plunger isn’t functioning well enough to separate the coffee grounds. And OH says it’s too windy to go gliding today.

Glad you had a successful FD, Cinque but sorry you’re not with me today. You too, LJ.

Penguin, sorry the wx hasn’t been too good to you. I rarely bother with the news these days as it isn’t generally good for my BP. But I might just check my bed before climbing in tonight. I’ve heard four snake stories this week. The other day, there was a fascinating historical account unfolding on the car radio. I followed up when I arrived home. The taipan, found near you JJulie, can now be seen at a museum near you, Cinque: http://www.kingsnake.com/aho/species/extras/budden.html

Wow Thin! Wonderful story. I will look out for the snake when I get to the museum. Poor guy though.

My ‘snake in the news’ this morning was also death related, but for a cat: (don’t look if it will distress you) https://www.2gb.com/watch-electrician-catches-python-after-it-eats-family-cat/
Was it one of the four you heard Thin? Or you Penguin?

I also heard an interesting parrot story. You know how small farmers are/were called cockies? I heard an explanation that it was from the very early settler days when they sowed their grain: the cockatoos would descend and spread out over the paddock eating all the seed, so it looked like the farmers were raising a crop of cockatoos. Cockatoo farmers, cocky farmers, cockies.

But Penguin, how dare the UK media perpetuate Aussie stereotypes! I’m sure our media doesn’t do that to you!!!!
(That really did deserve multiple exclamation marks, Thin) 😉

Thin, rotten start to the day. Hope it picks up. Hope you worked out a way to have your coffee!

Penguin, from what you are writing, I’ll bet on you coming home with an extra pound or two, but very happy if you prove me wrong! But better than ignoring the barriers and not getting home at all.

Arelkade, hooray for a quiet day pottering in the garden!

Eeew Cinque, no that wasn’t one of them. Amazon had written about her recent Ecuador trip on another thread in which she described seeing two snakes fighting over a frog and then Purple related her ‘snake at the beach’ encounter yesterday. Then Penguin’s snake in the bed. But the story from the 1950s was incredible. I once saw a photo of a man’s head inside a python. You could see the outline of his facial features. It was on the front page of a Malaysian newspaper. Nope, the extra exclamation marks added nothing to your sentence, Cinque! 😆 I didn’t know that farmers were referred to as cockies. I’ve abandoned coffee and moved on to herbal tea.

JJulie, I hope you’re staying dry up there. I read that people were going down the streets in their kayaks and in boats in areas between Cairns and Townsville. I wouldn’t be game for that – there must be crocs and snakes in the flood waters?

Arel, I’m a bit envious of a day pottering in the garden, but I’ve reminded myself that I’ll probably get there next week. Enjoy your gardening day.

Thin I’m sorry your day started with malfunctioning coffee makers and exploding milk. Who would have thought making the morning coffee could be so eventful. I hope you find a fix or replacement very soon, or mornings won’t be very bearable.

Thin, I think everyone can probably swing the hammer, the question is can they hit what they’re aiming for rather than their thumb!

Penguin, it’s mostly bad or sensational news that gets wide circulation. The only adverse events actually happening here at the moment that I’m aware of is flooding in some limited areas. We have the same “idiots” here who go into flood waters despite repeated warnings – putting rescue workers in danger trying to pull them out again.

As I fasted yesterday and brunch was cancelled this morning my NFD started with fake pizza. Actually it was a piece of Turkish flatbread that I put sundried tomato pesto onto, then topped with parmesan, herbs, zucchini, mushrooms and red capsicum. I put in the basket of the airfyer for 8 minutes which is enough to crisp up the base and grill the toppings. It was a delicious tasty treat.

This afternoon I’m going to move my essential small appliances etc from the kitchen to the laundry. Then I’m going to plastic wrap the kitchen! I’ve bought a big bag of plastic drop sheets and plan to tape them around all the built-in cupboards, benches and appliances to reduce the amount of clean up I have to do after sanding the floors. Of course that will make it tricky to get into the appliance cupboard to use the kettle or microwave etc, so I’ll move those and a small amount of crockery and cutlery. That should minimise my need to undo keep undoing the tape – really just the fridge.

For those of you fasting, I hope you are off to an easier start than Thin.
Thin I hope your day improves.
I won’t be fasting again until Wednesday which means 3 NFDs in a row – often a scary prospect for me if my eating gets a bit too generous. I have been a bit more controlled over the last few days so hopefully it’ll be ok.

The joy of a shower when you haven’t been able to have one for 3 1/2 days is just wonderful. Clean hair and clean me. Although as well as scrubbing my hair I did spend a bit of time admiring my grouting – couldn’t help myself. 😀
I’m just having a very late dinner of a small jacket potato with tuna mornay and cauli, broccoli & sweet potato on the side. I only had to microwave it but had to fight my way through the plastic wrapping around the appliance cupboard first – that was a challenge.

Hi I am new to this forum, and the 5:2 diet itself. I was put on this by my Endocrinologist with the thought to help me with my diabetes, hypothyroidism and various other problems. Struggling somewhat with the fast days (have only had 2 so far) but am learning quickly that planning is a critical part of the success. Will keep checking on here for helpful hints etc. Cheers Paula

    Good morning everyone!

    Welcome Paula,
Congratulations on your first week of 5:2ing. Planning does make such a difference!
It is good to read your profile. I do imagine your complicated health issues makes it tricky to manage your fast days. Are you doing 500cals on fast days or 800?
Please ask questions or have a big whinge about 5:2. We will all give different responses and suggestions; but then you can see if there is anything among them that may help you.

I hope you had a good Fast Day yesterday Thin. I’ve got my exclamation marks under control today. I hope you get down to that nice little cafe for a lovely frothy coffee this morning.
LJoyce, what a lovely, lovely shower.

Congratulations to everyone who fasted yesterday, and cheers to those who are fasting today.
I’m having a normal day. Whatever that is 😉

Hi Cinque, ha ha! My FD was uneventful thanks. Chickenless miso soup which will now be known as miso soup. I do feel less satiated in the late evening without the portion of protein but I’m just getting on with it. Wondering however whether a 4 day water fast is really feasible for me and thinking perhaps not. Off to a bridge lesson after walking so no time for a decent coffee. OH managed to rig the plunger to tide me over so at least I can still use freshly ground beans.

Welcome Paula, I’m also in Perth. Are you NoR or SoR?

Glad you had a lovely shower LJ. Nice to be able to stand back and admire your work.

    Where’d everyone else go?

Good morning everyone and welcome to you Paula 🙂
It’s been a difficult start to my Monday FD. I went to go to work earlier and my car wouldn’t start. It’s been 2 hours now and still waiting for the NRMA. Luckily I joined last year just before we went on a three week road trip. Prior to that we haven’t been roadside assistance members fir many years.
I almost gave up on my FD. I am so bored and annoyed and I though I might just go eat and do a FD another day. Then I said to myself NO! Do not use the car not starting as an excuse to eat when really you are not even hungry. So I made a cup of tea instead. It’s funny how I still think that everything has to be perfect for me to fast!
I hope everyone has a great day and I think mine can only get better! Fingers crossed 😉

Good morning SHs, hope you are all ready for another week. Looks like a week of mild weather for most of us, which will be a nice change from some of the extremes lately.

Hi PaulaMac, welcome. I tried a few different eating patterns on fast days before I found a routine that felt easy. You are right, planning is really important. The other things I found useful are:
    – plan food for when you know your hunger is at it’s height and try not to eat in the low appetite periods.
    – on fast days avoid foods that cause cravings as it makes the day harder
    – keep it simple and find a small number of easy recipes for FDs that you like – then it becomes routine rather than lots of effort.

Quacka, I hope you get the car going quickly. I smiled when I read your solution to breaking your fast was to make a cup of tea instead. That’s my solution to most things too. Works a treat most of the time.

Thin, I also still can’t imagine doing the water fast. Liquids only I could do, but not confident on the clear water idea. Glad you found some way to get coffee although I suspect it’s a bit gritty as plunger coffee is usually ground coarser than machine coffee grounds to stop the fine particles getting through the plunger sieve.

Cinque, I’m having a normal day too. I’ve just had a mid-morning pot of tea and a banana.

I have to keep working on the kitchen floor this morning, but I’m taking the afternoon off. My best friend is coming over to see my progress then we are going out for afternoon tea. I’m in a bit of pain this morning so having some time off will be welcome.

Morning, wow how nice to be welcomed by so many people.

Cinque, I am on the 500 calorie day. I am lucky because my daughter is doing it with me.

Thin, I am SoR. What about you?

    Quacka, thanks for the welcome.

LJ, I am slowly figuring out that I need to work out what to eat – have everything prepared in the fridge ie snacks etc so that I don’t graze.

I felt a little despondent yesterday as it was one week since we started so we weighed in – I have put on 0.1kg not lost. My daughter did heaps better and lost over 1kg. Oh well, onward and upward.Difficult to work it all out when I have to be on a low fibre diet as well.

Anyway, hope you all have a great day – mine will be fasting. 🙂

I’ve finished my allotted tasks and cleaned up and now just waiting for my friend to arrive so we can go out for a cuppa, and perhaps a scone I think.

Paula, if you find your weight doesn’t change you may need to also look at what you are eating on your non-fast days. I kept plateauing and discovered my TDEE was very low. This meant the calories I needed on a normal day was less than I’d assumed, so I had to reduce some high cal foods and also adjust portion sizes.
If you haven’t already done so, work out your TDEE. https://thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-calories-on-a-non-fast-day/ It’s a guide rather than an absolute so it’s best to be conservative. Underestimate your activity and use your goal weight rather than your current weight. That way you’ll learn to eat the appropriate portion sizes for the weight you want to be and will have an easier time with maintenance.
Good luck with today’s FD. If you need a grazing idea for a FD I recommend a punnet of strawberries – 270kj (74cal) for the whole punnet and can be snacked on through the day if you need to. Over time you may find that those old behaviours which include things like snacking or never allowing yourself to feel hunger will ease of. Most of us have found that we behave differently with food after being on 5:2 for a long time, although we also found that these changes happened gradually. I found I was blind to some of my food habits but would suddenly be aware of a behaviour and would work at improving it. Tackling one thing at a time seemed to be the best way to make changes that stuck.

Bad luck Quacka, but you will feel so good about yourself when you’ve completed the FD under adversity. Turning to food for comfort is a great habit to break, so well done.

LJ, I grind my beans freshly every day so can adjust the coarseness, thankfully. It wasn’t terrible but I do love my Rancilio machine which has given me 13 years of faithful service. Expensive but worth every penny. I’m not keen on the modern pod things where so much excess goes into landfill. Enjoy that scone!

Paula, that’s discouraging but don’t give up! If you change nothing else and adhere to the two FDs correctly, you will lose weight. So something’s not quite right but you’ll work it out. Are you remembering to count absolutely everything that passes your lips including milk in tea/coffee, herbal teas, etc? As you say you’re planning ahead, I expect the answer is yes. Therefore, you could be over-compensating with extra food on the day before or after a FD perhaps? A lot of us did that at first. Also, it doesn’t matter how much exercise you do or how active you think you are, the 500 cal limit still exists – you don’t add calories for activity. And, as LJ points out, the 500 cal limit is a rough guide – it’s important to work out your TDEE. I expect as you talk it over with your daughter, something she’s doing or not doing will become clear. Finally, for now anyway, when you ‘weighed in’, was it under exactly the same circumstances as the starting weigh-in? i.e. on accurate, decent scales, naked, after the loo but before eating/drinking anything?

I’m SoR, inner city suburb. I’ve met several (7) Perth losers from this thread over the years and we sometimes meet for a coffee. If this interests you, let me know.

    Good Afternoon everyone.

I’ve just been reading up on the posts and its interesting to find out that there are people who have diabetes that are on the 5:2. One of my best friends has it and I have talked about 5:2 with her. She straight away said that she couldn’t do it because of the diabetes. I told her that she probably could as long as she worked it out with her doctor first and that she may need to see a dietitian.
I can’t remember where I read it, (but it was on this site somewhere), about someone who was diagnosed with diabetes and all the conventional methods of controlling it were not working for him. His doctor refused to even consider him going on this ‘diet’. I’m not sure who he went and saw but this person worked with him to do the 5:2 and he has had a really good outcome from it. I just wish my friend would think about it, just consider it.

Paula, please try not to get disheartened by the numbers on the scale. I think we have all been there and so we know how it feels at times. Keep at it and I promise you will lose weight. I use a fitness app just to keep track of my weight and to sometimes check calories in different foods. They have a check in system and it plots my weight in a graph. I find it helpful to focus on the general trend rather than individual readings (even though I still weigh myself everyday)

The car dramas are all over thank goodness. I got to work at around 11:30 am feeling a lot lighter. $255 lighter actually. My 4WD needed a new battery. Guess I should count myself lucky that it wasn’t something more serious and also that it didn’t happen on the boat ramp or something like that!! It very nearly could have yesterday but we decided to go fishing in the canoe instead of the boat. Things happen for a reason…..

Did you catch any fish Quacka? Hurray for the NRMA – or in our case, the RAC – one of my two top most efficient Australian companies, the other being BreastScreenWA. I find both to be brilliant, professional, efficient and knowledgeable.

Fasting offers huge potential for diabetes. On the MC thread, you’ll find Purple Vegie Eater whose husband, Mr P. reversed his diabetes through practicing 5:2. When I first read this, I thought it impossible. Your friend just needs to find a doctor who’s familiar with IF and diabetes. I have a neighbour whose GP said she shouldn’t practice 5:2 because she is pre-diabetic. GPs historically know very little about nutrition as they don’t get the training. Keep researching.

    Afternoon all

So far so good for my fasting today.

LJ, thanks for the information. I am one of those people who constantly beat themselves up if it is not perfect. I have to learn to not be so hard on myself.

thinatlast, I have been calculating everything, but I think I have been overcompensating on the day before and after knowing I was going to “starve” for a day. I have to really work on what is going into this gob of mine. 🙂 Thanks for the invite for coffee (I have pretty bad anxiety so going out is not always possible) but thanks all the same. When you have your next one, maybe let me know and I will be able to let you know.

Quacka, get your friend to get a referal to an Endocrinologist. I go to one here in Perth and he is who put me on this. I have diabetes (type 2), but very high 19+, I cannot take Metformin for it as it interferes with another medication I take. So to get my level lower, it is either this, or injections. I am taking another tablet for my diabetes but it is less effective as Metformin. My Endocrinologist is also doing the 5:2 and has done so for the last 7 months, so I guess he know what he is talking about.

Anyway guys, I am off today. Have a good one. Paula

    Hi Northern Hemisphere

My first day of fasting tomorrow. I have actually been doing a fast from 8pm to 12midday – which I have found good practice, and reasonably easy, so I am hoping that has set me up for the longer fast.

    :))))

    Hi Quacka
Thin popped onto another thread I go on to suggest I read your diabetes post.

5 years ago my husband was an insulin injecting Type 2 diabetic. He had been diagnosed 10 years earlier.
After watching the Moseley documentary on SBS, we both started 5:2 in 2013.
He started very carefully, eating his 500 cals in 3 small “meals” and doing blood sugar tests frequently, sometimes even every few hours. He recorded everything (and still does). He realised quickly that on fast days he had to reduce his insulin amount, then quite soon after, he needed none on fast days and reducing insulin injections on non fast days. By one year we had both reached our healthy goal weights, were only eating after a 24 hour fast and he was no longer injecting insulin. He continued taking Metformin for a few months, then dropped this too. He has been drug free ever since.
He has the full support of our GP, still tests his bs every morning, fasts twice a week and has maintained his 30kg weightloss.
Insulin causes us all to gain weight. The more weight you gain increases your risk of Type 2 diabetes. Fasting, limiting the eating of white carbs (hi gi foods) and increasing leafy veg and fish keeps him healthy.
5:2 is the perfect answer for people with or heading towards Type 2 diabetes.
    PVE
